Visited this place based on the great reviews and ratings, as I was really in the mood for a good shrimp cocktail. The staff was attentive, friendly, and personable, which definitely made for a good experience. The atmosphere was lively and a bit noisy, but it's a great setting if you're coming with a group and looking to have a good time. As for the food, the shrimp cocktail was average in my opinion and a little small for the price. I also ordered the steak huarache. The flavors were good, but unfortunately, I was a little disappointed with the steak itself. It was on the dry side, and the portion of steak seemed very limited, especially considering there was an additional charge for it. Overall, this is definitely a place where you can enjoy yourself, have some drinks, and grab a bite with friends or family. The service and atmosphere were highlights for me. Got some Mexican food at this casual cafe. It may look pretty worn out but it's better than it looks. La Cocina De Don Ramon is just authentic enough that it won't harm the American palates. A bad thing is there's no alcohol. There's still the good which includes burritos, tacos, and more. Coming here for the first time it seemed to be a family owned type of cafe. It's not going to impress anyone with the bare bones interior. That's what the food has for a job. A pretty okay amount to choose even though there's not that much to get. This helps to narrow choices obviously. It's about $4 for a beverage. The Jamaica is a beverage made with hibiscus flowers and is actually sweet. It's about $9 for a Vegetariano Burrito. This comes with the expected fillings like beans, rice, and tomatoes. Has a lot of great stuff to get fresh. It's closed Mondays. There's a lot of meaty and seafood choices but there's a few things including the burrito for vegetarians. read more

It was great when the business opened and initially started but the food quality, service has decreased significantly! What a shame because they were once one of my favorite places in Portage Park. Came here on a night where the restaurant was short staffed so there were extremely long waits for every table. The person that was waiting our table was very apologetic and gave us a free order of churros which goes a long way. The food portions were very large, except for the salsa provided with the chips. I had the shrimp fajitas which I found to be a bit too salty for my taste. My wife had green enchiladas which she enjoyed, and the kids shared an appetizer dish that could have fed the entire table. The restaurant appeared to have many regulars which is great to see. We weren't wowed by the experience, but clearly caught them on a bad night. read more

I found my go to taco place! Everyone needs a go to taco place and after moving into the portage park neighborhood, and trying a bunch of different taco spots, my journey brought me to La Cocina de Don Ramon. We ordered takeout and picked it up in person. When we walked in we were greeted very warmly and it smelled amazing. The restaurant was really cute and we look forward to dining in next time. The food was FANTASTIC. The asada tacos were seasoned perfectly and the fish tacos had a great flavor, tasted very fresh but was a little salty. Personally I didn't mind, but I could see that being a turn off for someone. We also got elote- fantastic, and chicken enchiladas- fantastic. Last night I visited this restaurant for a bit to eat after a long day of unpacking as I am newly moved to Chicago. I was so pleasantly surprised. The food absolutely delicious I had a carnitas taco, a carne asada taco and a picadillo taco. All were fantastic in their own way. There wasn't anyone dining in that night, lots of take out it seemed because of the cold, so I had a chance to speak with the owners and they served me a taste of freshly made pozole. It was so incredibly delicious I bought a portion to take home to have for dinner the next day. I cannot recommend this place enough. I placed an order with them for the first time through Uber Eats on Sunday, and the order kept getting delayed because drivers were unavailable or did not want to take this order. After 10-20 minutes of when the order was supposed to be picked up, they called me and asked if I wanted the order to be delivered by one of their employees. To my surprise, the owner delivered the order personally, saying he just wanted us to enjoy the food hot and ready. The sopa de tortilla, the carnitas tacos, and torta de carne asada were all fantastic. I will be ordering again not just because of the food, but the kind people making it. 10/10. We decided to walk into this hidden gem in the Portage/ Jefferson Park area. We were really impressed with the quality, freshness, and taste of the food. We were graciously greeted by the owner Vicente and our waitress. They gave us a little background on the restaurant. We appreciated how personable and friendly they were. They made sure to keep our chips, salsa and waters full as we tried to decide what to eat. We decided to have the Camarones estilo Don Ramon as an appetizer which were so tasty, tangy and spicy. I had a Gordita de asada which was super fresh and crispy. I appreciate that it was not super oily/ greasy as I've had bad experiences at other places in the past. I also ordered a taco de lomo and a chile relleno taco. We also had a sample of their burritos estilo Durango which was a delicious desebrada en salsa verde, which did not disappoint!! Everything was delicious! My favorites were the Gorditas and the shrimp. Honestly I will say it's the best tasting Mexican food that I've tried in the area. After trying over 20 Mexican restaurants on the north westside side, we finally stumbled upon this new gem, and I can confidently say it's one of the best! This place brings authentic flavors and excellent quality at a fantastic price point. For our first visit, we tried the vegetarian taco, the fish taco, and the chili relleno taco, and each one was outstanding. The fish taco was truly a standout--perfectly cooked, not fishy at all, and bursting with flavor. Their beans are also worth mentioning; they're some of the best I've had in Chicago to date. Also their tortillas a just YUM! We also couldn't resist adding a chicken gordita and enchiladas with mole to our order. Everything was delicious, and the portions were generous--enough food to comfortably feed 3-4 people, all for a very reasonable price.
