This little gem is a family-owned establishment known for its carne adovada, enchiladas, and spicy chile. An extensive New Mexican and limited 'American' menu contains such great delights as shredded beef tacos, stuffed sopapillas, chicken enchiladas, and one of my favorites, the Tortilla Burger with green chile and avocado. Breakfast is served seven days a week, and is worth the stop. The breakfast burritos are some of the largest I've had,and you want to make sure to order it smothered - I prefer "Christmas" (red and green) because both of the La Cocina chiles are so tasty. This place has a nice atmosphere and avg tasting food. The wait staff is good. The main and most important asset a restaurant has and must maintain is consistacy. The breakfast burrito us a gamble. I guess that maybe half the time its really good using a smaller thin homemade tortilla and fresh ingredients. The flip side is a horrible giant 1/2 inch thick homemade tortilla with a dab of Chile and the worst bacon I've tasted. It is all tortilla. How in the world can these 2 versions of the same menu item be so different. I'm not taking chances any longer. Being from southern New Mexico I have to say I like chile with rich, bold flavor. Hot is never "too hot" for me. That said, The salsa here is not remotely hot. It's very watery, and mostly tomato. No real flavor there. The sopapillas were good. I had menudo with posole and red chile. For some reason the red chile has ground beef in it :/, also minimal flavor , no heat. Went for lunch there, I ordered a stuffed sopapila with red chili. At first bite I noticed the chili tasted sour, it was horrible the only thing I ate from it was the shredded beef. My daughter ordered a burrito, the tortilla was so hard she had to cut it with a knife. All I can say is their sopis and water was the best thing there. This is by far the BEST restaurant in Espanola. The food is amazing I haven't found a dish I do not like and I eat here around 30 times a year at least. The servers are amazing and friendly. This isn't bad, but it didn't have a lot of flavor. The most flavorful thing on my plate were the pinto beans. The green chili was definitely spicy, but it wasn't as hot as I was expecting after the waitress said it was really hot today.
