Don't let the rough outside of the building fool you the food is great. The ambiance is standard diner but if you want good NM food here it is. My co-worker and I stopped here on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, for lunch. We didn't wait more than a minute to be seated at a window booth. The tables and booths were clean inside this spacious, high ceiling diner. Our server, Dianne, had a charming smile and took our order after delivering two ice waters with lemon. I ordered the red chile, flat stacked, shredded beef enchiladas with an over medium egg on top ($10.99/plus $1.29 for the egg). My co-worker opted for the sopapilla stuffed with shredded beef ($10.99). Our orders came with Mexican rice and beans on the side. Our dishes were ready in five minutes and were well heated. The rice had too much moisture and was a bit soggy. The beans were bland and appeared to be reheated and not fresh. My shredded beef in the enchiladas had too much moisture and the red chile had heat but no flavor. I'd say everything needed more seasoning. Dianne did bring out two sopapillas which were fresh, airy, and delicious. If you want average New Mexican food with large quantity than eat here. Came in a couple times while in the area. The service is friendly and quick and the menu has many options with breakfast served all day. The breakfast burritos are big and filling, the green & red sauce (Christmas is what New Mexicans call it) is good, the green being hotter of the two. The bacon is nice and thick. The omelette is good with the green sauce. The biscuits & gravy is okay wish it was sausage gravy but I crumbled my sausage. Kids plates plentiful and the cost is not high. I had driven down from Colorado on Highway 285 through construction zones, tired and hungry. I got in just before closing time at 2:30pm, which sometimes gets you dirty looks from restaurant staff. Not here; they made me feel welcome. I had a combo plate (taco, enchilada, tamale) with excellent red chile and a sopapilla with honey - genuine tradition Northern N.M. cuisine. Great food and friendly service. The distinctive building, by the way, was originally one of a chain with a "country" theme. We were SOOOOO hungry after our drive up to Chimayo. We were just kind of driving around looking for a place to eat and I had seen a recommendation to this restaurant for me on google. We pulled in and parked. Walking in, I was a little Leary of the landscaping in front of the restaurant.... it was pretty neglected looking. I stopped here on a vacation from my family's ranch to California. The food here was excellent. Very authentic and quality flavors. I ordered the stuffed soplillo with carne adovada and it was to die for. The portions are huge, I had a half order and I am a full grown man and it was enough for me. This was our BEST New Mexican meal by far on our vacation. I loved the family feel and the downright homey-ness of this establishment. I tried the chilis rellenos and my husband had the carne adovado with huevos rancheros. My meal was absolutely delicious with the perfect amount of heat. I tasted is carne adovado and MIND BLOWN. It was perfect. So perfect in fact that I am now compelled to make it at home. (I even bought a ristra of dried chilis so I could experiment.) Of course, we loved the sopapillas. They were fresh and the perfect finish to our meal. The decor might not be cool or trendy, but the service was good, the food tasty, and the coffee better than any hotel coffee we had during our five days in New Mexico. Was not impressed with this "traditional New Mexican cuisine". We are from Texas and can get better food at our Tex-Mex restaurants. The quesadilla tasted like canned cheese. Our travel group loves to find hometown favorites, and we are constantly trying out new (to us) "mom and pop" restaurants. We LOVED Joann's! Maria was so patient to answer our many questions, and was spot-on with the answer to the question, "What would you order?" She suggested the Chicken Enchiladas, and several of us went with that. I chose tamales, and another ordered chicken fried steak. Every one of us cleaned our plate! I totally agree with George R.'s review and description of the restaurant. My husband and I went in for a late breakfast. I had the huevos rancheros that came with pinto beans and tiny little cubes of fried potato (not sure what the potatoes were called). All was good, except the potatoes were a bit greasy. Steve had scrambled eggs, smoked bacon, hashbrowns, and a side of pancakes. He liked his very much. The bacon was very smokey and flavorful. Comfort food . . . it is. There were a few hand drawn pictures on the wall in the back that showed that someone loves their "Nanna" very much. Very homey and sweet. The server was attentive and very nice. This place is so good. Hubby had the chimichanga with shredded beef. Loved it. Red Sauce was spicy but thick and tasty. I had the tostada half order. It had beans , cheese, lettuce ,sauce and it was light , not heavy food. I added shredded beef and it was great. Would be good without it too. Side of a homeny and red rice. So delicious. Joann's Restaurant Review: The service was Terrible, not only by our waitress, but also from the owner, JoAnn. As we were waiting for our food I was cold because the cold air from the windows gave me the chills. As I was rubbing my hands on my legs I felt something above my hand. As I looked under the table there was a piece of gum hanging down. It was disgusting, so when one of the waitresses came by to refill my tea I asked her if she could remove the gum. She just gave me a dirty look and walked away. So then when our waitress came with our food I asked her if she could remove the gum (because I sure as hell wasn't going to touch it), she mumbled somthing and walked away. She came back with the rest of our food and again I asked her to remove the gum and she stated she couldn't remove the gum until after I left. I told her I wanted it removed now because I didn't want to continue touching this hanging gum. She then got her towel that she cleans the tables with and with major attitude removed the gum. She rolled her eyes at me and went to talk with another server and both of them continued to give me dirty looks. I then went to the bathroom and noticed JoAnn sitting at a booth. I introduced myself and informed her of the situation that had taken place and she told me that her waitresses only clean the top of the tables not the bottom and that she couldn't help what children or adults do with their gum. She then asked me why was I touching under the table anyway. I could not believe what I was hearing. She should be apologizing not making her customers feel uncomfortable and questioning them. As I walked back to our table I looked around and the restrautant and noticed that it was filthy, the window sills were dusty and the ceiling had cobwebs. As I sat down at our booth, I noticed there was also gum on the seat and thought, I probably have gum on my pants too. I was upset with this visit. I then decided to get even with our server. I put syrup around the bottom of my plate so that she could get hey hands sticky. If she wants to give me dirty looks and talk about me, I might as well give her a reason. Maybe I shouldn't have done that, but it made me feel better. We will NEVER go back to this restaurant and I urge anyone who chooses to go eat there to think twice because if there front of the house is dirty, I could only imagine the kitchen. Had the chicken fajitas today and I can state without question they were the worst I have ever ordered. Instead of being served on a sizzling platter with fresh tortillas these came on a platter dominated with a bowl of canned (barely warm) beans staraight from a can and greasy cottage style fried potatos.
