Pancakes
Cole D.

The burrito is a four. The hot chocolate too. The pancakes are three. The pancakes were really dry. It looks really fun. But it was kind of tasting more like cake then a pancake. Needed something to drown out the dryness. The burrito was really tasty. Would totally have that again. I asked about their hot chocolate and they said it was good. But it was completely average and tasted like water.

A cute little coffee shop! Service was extremely quick, and the coffee was delicious mix we didn't eat but the pastie did look good.

Feb 18, 2025 review: Another great cafe in Puerto Rico! There is a parking garage right in front of it. Again bunch of coffee options with 4oz, 8oz, 12oz. Pretty diverse sandwich options too- like veg panini, Panini toast, avocado toast, omelette and so on. Decent seating potions inside and outside. There is a room left with cute decor. Veg panini came with lot of avocado. Panini toast comes with 4 pieces, shareable among group. Service is fast and are able to take order in English.

Oatmeal- amazing!!

Service was great! Food was good. The oatmeal is AMAZING, some of the best I've ever had and my kids are still raving about it! Highly recommend.

Mini empanadas | 4/29/2023
Samantha C.

We needed coffee to start our last day in PR, so a quick Yelp search brought us here. I ordered "mini" empanadas for myself, and they were actually a decent size so I was able to share them with the rest of the table. Also ordered a turkey and egg spinach breakfast burritos. Food was good, but everything was slow - slow to order and slow to come out. Coffee prices were a bit high, e.g. an iced chai latte ($7) + extra shot ($1.25) + almond milk ($1.25) = $9.50 - it's giving Starbucks prices! They also have different flavored mimosas here and we ordered a soursop and passion fruit mimosa and they were good! Would definitely come back here for the food, but I'll probably grab coffee elsewhere.

I ate here every single day I was here in Puerto Rico. I LOVED their coffee so much, food was excellent and I ordered 5 different things!!! Service was excellent as well!

stuffed avocado and bae burrito
Kayla Y.

There was no wait and we were seated right away. Our server was super sweet and the food came out in about 30 minutes. the drinks were meh, the iced mocha lacked flavor and tasted like very milky coffee. the iced chai was great tho. the food was pretty good, I was excited to try the stuffed avocado and with like pork (kind of tasted like general tsao's which confused me) the bae burrito was good, nothing crazy. there were fried wonton strips? which didn't do anything for the dish, and we wished it came with fries instead. the price and wait weren't too bad, but the meal itself was okay.

The wait was just way too long after getting seated quickly. the waitress took our orders and it took over 2 hours for us to get any sort of food or even our beverage coffees. there was only 2 parties so i was not sure why it took that long. the food was okay i really liked the avacado toast. the turkey wrap was not good it was pretty bland and expensive for the price point they offer. i will not go here again it took too much of my time i cant get back C+ 4/10 coffee was okay

It's always coffee time.

The weekend brunch line is no joke, but they move thru the guests quickly and with good humor. And people in the queue were friendly enough and respectful of who arrived before them. But we went two different times and weekdays was ever so much easier. First visit I got a turkey pesto panini and split patatas bravas with hubs. Second visit I learned my lesson and got a whole order of patatas bravas. Those potatoes, with the house made signature aioli, they are to die for. They came included with my southwest chicken & waffle, which had a sweet waffle with raw sugar, but savory too, with also spinach and a fried egg to go with the chicken. Either meal I'd do again, or could work my way on down the menu -- so much looks good, and seeing things come out from the kitchen, it legit looks like the menu photos look.

I really hate to be that American that contributes to the colonization of Puerto Rico, but I was lol and this restaurant caterer to exactly that type It definitely gave a very vibe. It was filled with white people working at their computers, occasional tourists, like myself and some locals. Coffee and breakfast prices weren't as inexpensive as other places in Puerto Rico could have been but nonetheless it was a pretty good spot to hit up The counter girls were super nice spoke great English although we had a couple of Spanish speakers in our group so that wasn't necessary When my party of five needed a bigger table that had one person working at it with their desk, they kindly asked her to move to a smaller table to accommodate my party Coffee was great food was better. It was a very cute shop, nestled in santurce. definitely will be back here for my next trip to PR

The match latte
Jocelyn W.

If you come here, I don't recommend ordering the matcha. It was not good, I ended up sending it back and exchanged it for a chai latte. When the owner or manager came in, I overheard the waitress telling her that I returned the matcha because it had no flavor. The owner's response was that "that's just how matcha tastes," and said that next time someone orders it, they should be told that matcha tastes like nothing. That's simply not true. If you're going to serve something, especially something as specific as matcha, you should know how to prepare it properly, not just add it to the menu because it's trendy. As shown in the photo, the drink wasn't even the right color for matcha. This exchange made the experience uncomfortable, especially since we could clearly hear the staff talking about us. I also felt unnecessarily guilty for returning something that clearly wasn't prepared correctly in the first place. That said, the food itself was good. I recommend the BEA burrito and the stack of pancakes. But the overall service and experience were lacking, and unfortunately, that overshadowed the quality of the meal.

Egg Ham and Cheese Panini with avocado 10/10
Ivan J.

It is a small local diner. The service was good and the food even better. I had ordered the Egg Ham and Cheese panini with avocado, which the waitress recommended and it did not disappoint. We had the Patatas Bravas Loaded, she was very much loaded. Was told it has cayenne pepper and could be spicy. Honestly I loved. Been wanting something spicy. Didn't even get a chance to take home before picture, looked so good we all dived in to eat them. Do check it out

Iced vanilla latte with almond milk and one pump of vanilla
Michael L.

$9.50 for a iced latte with one pump of vanilla is something I've never seen and I live in Beverly Hills, California. As a business owner, I know it doesn't cost more than $.60 to produce a latte. Price seems a little bit outrageous. On principle, I will get my coffee elsewhere, but the ambience inside is nice and they have a couple seats out front.

I also feel compelled to review because we went to this restaurant on the strength of the 4.8 star rating. However, our experience was more in line with the 1-2 star reviews. Building is an old church, we found. I suspected that because of the stained glass around and the layout of dining room. It can get pretty loud in the dining room. At some point early in the service I felt I needed my earplugs. So, I put them in. You order via QR code on the table from your phone. Then.....the...wait....begins. We're seated at 11:18am. Order in around 11:30am. We finally got drinks at 12:09pm (39min). Drinks were really good, had the Ginger Turmeric Shot, Chia Latte, Cappuccino & Passion Fruit Juice. We thought that was a sign of more good things to come. Food arrived at 12:41. 30min later. Now, after waiting for 1hr9min, if the food comes out and it's bangin', all is forgiven and the drop in service is just a small blip in the experience. However... The Food: Chai Pancakes Pumpkin Pancakes Veggie Scrambled Eggs The EGGS were good. But nothing I couldn't do easily in my own kitchen. The Chai pancakes were the worst pancakes I've ever had. Far too much spices added and dry, dry, dry! I had one bite. One. Pushed it off. My wife had the Pumpkin Pancakes. She only had a few bites. "Have some of mine." I tried them. Weird flavor and gummy. She then said "Yeah, I didn't like them, either." Pushed the plate away. Funny that they make you PAY and TIP at the beginning of the meal. So, no matter how good or bad your experience is, they get their money. And this terrible experience cost us $68.00. $68 for breakfast!! Most of which didn't get eaten. There's no incentive for them to improve. And because of that...we will not be back. So the drinks, good. Eggs, good. Everything else WTF?? Oh, I almost forgot, you get your own water from their water station. A filtered water dispenser machine. Which seemed okay at the time. But it's just one more thing that the servers didn't have to do to deserve a tip. Terrible experience. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend. 1.5

We sat down for dinner at 7:45 and did not receive our drinks until 8:20, even though we put in our order as soon as we sat down... and asked politely how much longer until our drinks would come out... twice. Food did not come out for an hour and half, it was cold by the time we got it. Mac and cheese is not great cold. The ribs are extremely overcooked and like eating beef jerky. Drinks were okay, but by the time we got them everyone's cocktails were watered down, as well as the soft drinks. The ambiance was not great either since everyone around us was visibly frustrated by the wait times and lack of service, a table across flagged the waitress multiple times to ask where their stuff was. The food was decent, but again, cold. The wait times were no joke. We wrapped up our 7:45 dinner around 10, simply because of how long it took to be served. Our waitress came to our table maybe 3 times total, we would have to stand and find her to figure out where our food/drinks were. They were also out of a good majority of items on the menu when we tried to order them. Overall I unfortunately don't recommend! Price, service, and food are not great.

This local family-owned restaurant was a hit with our entire group of four. I ordered the Super Bowl Scramble, and wow, was it delicious. It was loaded with ham, sausage, eggs, potatoes seasoned with rosemary (which I absolutely love), and plenty of melted cheese. Every bite was flavorful and satisfying. My friend ordered the Power Omelette, her husband had the Famous French Toast, and my husband chose the Ashford Special. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals and was impressed with both the quality and the generous portions. I also had a fresh-squeezed orange juice, and it was absolutely delicious--fresh, sweet, and the perfect complement to breakfast. The portions are large, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. We left full, happy, and glad we stopped in. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great breakfast!

The biggest downside was the service--it was very slow. It took about 15 minutes just to place our order, and another 30 minutes for the food to arrive. We ordered a veggie omelette with Swiss cheese and bread--it was okay overall, though the bread was on the sweeter side, which I personally didn't enjoy. My husband had a veggie omelette wrap, which was decent as well. We also got an orange juice, but it wasn't sweet. Overall, it wasn't a bad experience, but not particularly memorable either. This is global techniques blended with locally sourced Puerto Rican ingredients. From the moment you walk in, you feel welcome. I was there to celebrate my birthday (a reservation is a must). I asked if I could be seated in a different section of the restaurant, and even though they were packed, they said absolutely and found me a lovely seat in the bar area. The staff is knowledgeable and attentive. I suffer from severe food allergies but wanted to experience their tasting menu. My server spoke to the chef directly and then took the time to walk me through every option. I TRULY appreciated that they did not take anything off the menu but rather told me how they could adjust for my allergies. That is very rare and so very much appreciated that they went that extra mile for me. I highly recommend the tasting menu. It's 5 courses and they give you 3 options to choose from, within each course. And for the price ($85), a great value. Everything was delicious but I highly recommend the Breadfruit Gnocchi, Rainbow Runner Crudo, and Criollo Duck Mofongo. Chefs kiss! What I also noticed was, even though they were insanely busy, they didn't make you feel rushed. The invited you to savor the experience - which I did. They have a lovely outdoor seating area, but we opted to sit inside for the ambiance, which turned out to be a great call. Service was excellent from start to finish. Our waiter was knowledgeable, attentive, and gave great recommendations. We decided to go all in on the $85 per person tasting menu. The food ranged from good to very good, and there was a *lot* of it. Standout dishes for me were the ceviche and the desserts, both of which were exceptional. The beef empanadas and breadfruit gnocchi were also highlights. My one criticism is that the tasting menu didn't feel particularly cohesive. We started with yellowfin tuna, moved on to wood-roasted fish, then suddenly shifted into Italian territory with breadfruit gnocchi in a rich buttery sauce before continuing on to beef steak and duck. Individually, many of the dishes were delicious, but together they felt more like a sampler of the restaurant's assortment of dishes rather than a thoughtfully sequenced tasting menu with a clear theme or progression. That said, the quality of the food, generous portions, and outstanding service made for a very enjoyable evening. If you're looking to experience a wide range of the kitchen's offerings, Cocina Abierta delivers.
