I have been coming here for about two weeks straight for my morning double shot of espresso and honestly, my experience varies greatly depending upon who is working that morning. Let's just talk about this morning. This morning, my cup was half full-it's a tiny cup, it should be full. I paid for a full cup. The first couple of times I went the dynamic duo working the register and espresso maker were awesome! They are flawless, I'm in I'm out, my cortado is perfect and my day is rocking and rolling, which is important at 6:30 in the am. With the rest of that motley crew it is hit or miss. Ever since I first stepped into La Colombe in Philly, I've been happily patronizing (yes, that is the definition of frequenting a store as a customer) this chain. There's another location in Mount Vernon Square, but I've loving this new location. The space is much larger and there's more seating. Minimalist and modern décor, brick walls, exposed pipes, dangling lights, wooden tables and chairs, seating typically for 1-2 people but also a large community table, stairs up to a cozy nook with a table large enough for four surrounded by large windows, and a general sense of openness. They have a menu as soon as you walk in. Whether you want drip coffee, your daily cortado, or a draft latte (BEST DRINK EVER), this La Colombe can hook you up AND for both dark and light roasts (hence the classic versus workshop options). Come in and take your coffee here to get their signature Deruta Raffaellesco ceramic cups and saucers, which I can't get enough of. They also have whole beans for sale and they can grind the beans for you. No Wi-Fi so you won't get the usual space hoarders and their electronics. It still gets crowded here, but we were lucky enough to snag two spots at the large community table. Great spot to enjoy a cup of Joe and soak in that third-wave, independent coffee movement. read more

LOVE the nitro latte. It would definitely be the only coffee I get in the summer. Since it's winter now I went for the classic latte. I love it, it's just enough espresso and milk. It doesn't have the after milky taste in your mouth. It is way better than the latte in the can. The can latte sometime can have the steel taste. Check it out if you are around!!!! I stopped in to try the draft latte and ended up sticking around to do some work. I didn't actually have the draft latte, but the drink I had was tasty and folks were great about offering milk alternatives. There is no WIFI here, so keep that in mind if you'd like to work here. However, you can connect to a few nearby accounts if you have access to those, or you may be able to get something done without the distractions that you usually encounter! We've been drinking La Colombe coffee from cans for a while now (it's available in our specialty foods store in Nashville), so we were excited to try it in-house when we visited DC last week. The coffee shop is modern, clean, bright, and wasn't crowded at all. My cappuccino was good, and the service (in a vintage looking cup and saucer) was beautiful. I love coffee and visiting different coffee shops has become a hobby of mine. I had read about La Colombe and was excited when this location opened up, right near Chinatown and Mount Vernon Square. The atmosphere is relaxed with a minimalist design. Plenty of brick walls and natural light. There are individual tables and communal tables for you to enjoy your coffee with friends or to sit and do work. After reading other reviews, I decided on trying the draft latte, which I had never tried before. It's a cold coffee beverage with ice and very light like a latte. It was amazing. I didn't even need to sweeten it (I tend to like my coffee on the sweeter side); I thought the taste of the coffee was good. The staff is friendly and it's clear that they really work to make the La Colombe Coffee brand what it is; a great place for a good cup of coffee. I'm very glad there is a location in DC. read more

I had a 4:30pm coffee date with a friend who suggested Chinatown Coffee, but I texted her to change the location last minute because: 1) Chinatown Coffee is too loud and serves up their coffee with too much 'tude; 2) I had wanted to try the La Colombe in DC ever since I heard it was coming here, as I fondly remember the potent iced coffee that I enjoyed in their SoHo location two years ago. True to La Colombe form, the space feels airily loft-like: lots of wood with brick walls and exposed pipe. I felt beautiful just by being there. Like, I kind of want to get married at La Colombe (Big Bear Cafe is another contender as well). Because it was late afternoon, I opted for a decaf tea. The cashier informed me that there were merely two decaf options: chamomile or peppermint. I totally misheard the second option and replied, shocked, "Pepper tea?!" He laughed nicely and repeated the options. I know it's a coffee shop, so I wouldn't expect them to offer a diverse variety of tea, but I do think they should up their tea game for those of us who sometimes need a break from coffee, or to be more inclusive of non-coffee drinkers. It also bugs me that they charge an extra 25 cents or so for coffee if it's decaf, as it punishes those of us who are susceptible to being over-caffeinated. Also, the peppermint tea was fine - not sure how exciting that flavor can REALLY be - but I loved the intricately painted mug and saucer it came on and wanted to steal them. The *best* part was that we found seats in a small elevated nook in the corner, separated from the rest of the cafe by a flight of stairs. It felt so cozy and special to have our own private VIP area looking onto the 6th and I Synagogue. Go for the ambiance and coffee. Not the tea. read more

We are pretty much equidistant between DC's two La Colombe locations (I know, so spoiled!), but the Chinatown location is now our go-to. It has more space, FRIENDLIER STAFF (perhaps the biggest perk), and just has a brighter, more open feel to it (mostly because of the shape of this location not resembling a galley kitchen). Same great coffee, same great sweets (from my fav, Rare Sweets). And I don't know if they finally have a menu posted in the Blagden Alley location, but there IS a menu here. Praise the Lord, the pretentiousness got knocked down a peg. Best coffee in DC, hands down. read more

They do not have matcha or chai lattes, which would be a nice touch since I am not always in the mood for coffee. For those who are looking to study, this may not be the ideal place. I don't believe they had wifi but I was able to connect to an xfinity network. Their seating is not very comfortable for long as the seats are wooden booths/chairs and the booths weirdly curve up toward the front which is not the most comfortable design. read more

Came here with a group of friends post-workout class (keeping those 2019 resolutions). Here's the thing, I find that a coffee shop should be a pretty easy transaction process since there are only so many drinks you can order and there was no line. However, that wasnt the case. I ordered an ice coffee (which is already brewed) and my friend ordered a drink on tap (already pre-made) and my order was forgotten (I had to ask 2 different times where it was after 10min of waiting) and my friend (who has a milk allergy) was given a whole milk iced latte instead of the oat milk latter on tap. While I love the environment and it is an excellent place to meet up with people, plus their coffee is dang good. I feel like a coffee shop service really makes or breaks it. Will I go here again, of course, it's good coffee and the baristas may have been having an off day. But, hopefully my experience will be different next time around. read more

I was up all night to get over my jet lag and waited for this cafe to open up at 7:30 sunday morning. I got there around 8am and not many people were inside. I wasn't greeted as usual, probably they thought of me a non-English speaking Asian woman, but still I thought that was pretty rude considering the area is surrounded by many Asian students and people (it's close to Chinatown.) I said hello first and since this was my first time (after reviewing the reviews here I decided to stay there fore a while) I wanted to go over my menu, but the server kinda rushed me. I didn't enjoy the atmosphere at all, but chairs are very uncomfortable and there's NO WIFI (I was told) but two people were using the computers (maybe hotspot). I left after a few more minutes. COFFEE: I don't understand why people left so many good reviews for the coffee it self. It's alright, it's not to go crazy about. If you are not into Starbucks, go for this coffee. If you are a regular, probably I would enjoy it better, but since I'm just visiting the town, I wouldn't make a trip down there to just to get a cup of coffee again. This spot is right next to my work and I love stopping by here for a pick me up. It's a little pricey for one drink but honestly it's about the same everywhere else. Really enjoyed the mocha and hot chocolate since I'm not a huge coffee drinker. The interior is also super cute and comfortable. Depending on the time of day, you can always find a seat. read more

Pretty good coffee. I like supporting non-Starbucks brands & going local so I checked them out. Pros: Generally pleasant cashier- altho I'm not sure how knowledgeable he was as he confused drip & cold brew coffee. A barista corrected him, though, and allowed me to try the draft coffee. If you like flaps, this would be your speed but it's made with whole milk so it's a bit heavy if you're just looking for a coffee fix & might be too desserty. Cons: No wifi. Also, I was a bit confused by the coffee bar situation - was a bit disorganized. Like, instead of giving a plate with a spoon leave out stirrers & lids for customers to take their own. I didn't quite get their set up and had to wait a few minutes to get their attention-as the baristas seemed preoccupied with other things-i.e. Not customers, lol. The coffee here is delicious. You won't find anything better in the city. Also, and just as importantly, the baristas are so warm and offer awesome service. One night I came in 2 minutes past closing time, Barista Drew took pity on me since I'd walked over in the cold and offered me a coffee - no charge (they'd shut down their machines already). When looking for coffee shops to try whilst I'm on vacation - my plus 1 always makes fun of me, because I have but one requirement...IT MUST BE CUTE. Anyone else out there fall in the same category? Sure, there are places that are cute and the coffee is crap, but I had a good feeling about this one. Not only because of the intriguing menu choices, but because they're SO good, that this is just one of their several locations. They must be doing something right. I overheard some trendy boho floral dress wearing blogger-type in the shop telling her bestie over flat-lay Instagram shots that this was super new and super now - and I couldn't agree more. It seemed to be built into a narrow old building, with another building twice the size off the first level, creating a multi-level La Columbe universe. The cups and dishes were all hand-painted, and the service was so fast, and sincerely friendly. They even offered to help us pick out a bag to take home when we must have looked like dumb-struck tourists. Awesome customer service. I ordered the Black & Tan (pure black cold press, and their nitro latte...both on TAP WHAAAAAT), and it was smooth and creamy, with bitterness nowhere in sight. It was served with a tiny plate and a spoon to stir, and paired with their soft and chewy apple pastry-pie (and let's be honest I got the berry kouign-amann too) I was on a legal high for the next few hours. Peter E. got the Red Eye, which was tasty AF. The furnishings were all simplistic and wooden with metal accents, like a page right out of your Pinterest feed. There was the perfect amount of natural lighting, and the bathrooms were clean and classy. I woulda stayed there for the remainder of my trip if I coulda. In the sea of self-respecting third-wave coffee joints, La Colombe is... much like the rest of them. Modern, expensive, a bit minimalist, expert baristas, attentive service. You know what you're walking into. They don't mess around with caramel syrup and whatnot, so expect to order a real coffee or espresso drink. [But as someone who loves coffee-as-dessert, I still always enjoy what I end up with.] Not a good spot to do work unless you get there quite early. So I went into the coffee shop with my fiancé today excited about trying their coffee (1230pm). Immediately, the cashier just had a Snippy and short attitude. You know the very rude matter of fact sassy nonsense like we were on a reality show. So we continued to place our order. When the order arrived we tasted the coffee as people buying coffee do to make sure the taste was good. Immediately, the cashier stated in a rude manner, "guys you going to have to put on your mask, we are not sipping in the cafe." Honest right, no his tone was rude as hell. He Was deliberately trying to be sassy. So in this day and age we being minorities could conclude the cashier was racist. So I will continue to purchase coffee from this location and the next time I will make sure to have my camera ready just in case I have to film rude behavior and post it online. read more

Wow! These folks are serious about their coffee and one can taste the difference between their coffee from the one out of the big green-sign chain down the road. I ordered their pour over from Panama. Yum to-the-mutha-fahkin My! Smooth as tea, and that is a testament to their roasting skills. The barista called it a "competition" coffee as a lot of time, skill and effort go into roasting these beans from Panama, and at $44 for a quarter pound bag and specific instructions from the barista on the machine to be used on this coffee totally impressed me. They also have a "draft latte" that is actually poured out of, you guessed it, a draft! Imagine an iced latte where the froth stays frothy until you finish it. These days I try to eat and drink local. I want things sourced as close to me as possible. When I saw La Colombe, it gave off a vibe that I thought would mesh with my world view. When I asked for local coffee, the barista offered a Ethiopian dark roast. That's halfway across the world! I asked for another selection and I was offered some beans from Nicaragua. Huh? What does it take to get something local in the nation's capital? How about a coffee grown, harvested and roasted in Clarendon? I would even go as far as Falls Church for a quality product. For the time being, I think I will have to stick to my Nescafe, which is the one coffee I can drink without any moral qualms. read more

Was in the neighborhood and wanted to get a decent cup of coffee. Some yelp and Reddit research pointed to La Colombe as a solid coffee selection while in DC area. Hard part about only being able to go to shops while being out of town is I want to try at least an espresso shot, pour over, and a latte or cortado. But usually refrain from consuming so much caffeine and can be expensive. Ordered a cortado ($3.50), and despite ordering to go, the barista still put some effort into the presentation which was a nice tiny heart. Flavor was excellent. I thought the aesthetics of the shop was nice - hip, exposed brick, wood, vintage lighting. Nice place to relax, and had a good number of students there studying. Don't live in the DC area, but would recommend to any coffee lover. Would stop back anytime I'm in town. read more

If this review were solely for their aesthetics and the black + tan drink, it would be 5 stars. In fairness, I haven't tried the food yet, but the draft latte (the tan part of the Black and Tan) is somewhat overhyped and over priced. It's very foamy so you're actually getting about 2/3 as much coffee as it initially appears to be, and if you like coffee it probably won't be strong enough for you (and you obviously can't just toss in an extra shot without changing the "draft" texture and experience). The Black and Tan remedies this issue by being ~2/3 black coffee from the tap (not foamy) and 1/3 draft latte which also serves as all the milk/cream you would probably need. Definitely the best drink on the menu if you life coffee (plus if you're in it for the social media, it's far prettier than the cream-colored foam draft latte.) Lots of seating (this location has a cool loft area), clean restrooms, and fantastic service! read more

I appreciate the suggestions to get the draft latte ($3.75). SO GOOD. I've never seen a latte on draft and I've never had a cold drink with so much foam (I don't understand how they do it!). This drink gets a 5 star rating. We also got the black iced coffee ($2.75) and it was pretty meh. It actually tasted watery, which was a letdown after having such a positive experience with the latte. If I'm a connoisseur of anything in life, it's iced coffee, and the cup we got just wasn't very good. I'd give it 2-3 stars. Overall, I liked the look of this place and loved the draft latte! There's plenty of tables for seating but the music is really loud so not ideal for conversation or working unless you have noise cancelling headphones. I don't see any electrical outlets so I'm not sure if there's any place to charge devices. I got the fig and cheese pastry. The taste is great but I think it's old because the outside is really hard and it's pretty dry. I bet when these things are fresh they're amazing. read more

When this place first opened, I was literally going twice a day, I love it so much. La Colombe is one of my most frequented coffee shops in the neighborhood. I love that they have oat milk, and you must try their oatmeal black and tan, which is creamy deliciousness. It's a little bit hard on the wallet but at the same time it's a nice treat. The almond milk is also very nice. Basically I just love all their nondairy options. Second time here. It's a good location to get work done. Coffee is great, and I love that they have both sparking water and still on tap. (After an hour long soul cycle class water is needed). The pasties are very subpar. I honestly could have walked to Safeway and got a better selection. My croissant has no taste, it isn't flaky and why don't I have the option to warm it up?
