La Conversation has this unique ambiance, anitques on the walls, window curtains, wooden chairs and tables. The tables are a bit crammed together, but I still love the chill laid-backness of the place. So much that it successfully invokes a Parisian feel. Another area where it succeeded in the French department is service. You'll know what I mean if you've been to France - service is definitely not in your face or obtrusive, if it's there. I got a cup of cappuccino which was not disappointing and sloppy. I would be interested in getting just an espresso next time to taste the beans blend they use. I got a goat cheese omelette with basil but it was tough and mushy and less flavorful than you'd expect from a basil and goat cheese combination. According to the server those were some great picks so I am wondering if their kitchen is sub-par. I might consider a re-test with just the espresso and an eclair next time. read more

First time for breakfast, a waste of time & money. Seated outside, long wait, had to go in & request service twice. Eggs & potatoes more cold that hot, food very, very average or worse. Another long wait for check, had to go in & ask for it again. Charged my credit card for something I didn't order. Gave me cash back instead of crediting back my card. Very unpleasant experience. This place is so incredibly adorable! The staff is so incredibly sweet, if you go on Saturday: Ask for Geana. She is the sweetest and has such positive energy. This cafe actually encourages CONVERSATION. The atmosphere is warm and cozy and does feel actually like I'm in France (although a bit more spacious). Great service and coffee. The food takes around 20 minutes, but totally worth the wait for the good vibes and friendly atmosphere. The croissants that they give you before their meal are amazing. Just left this lovely spot I've been driving past for a while and I'm glad I finally had the time to stop. I always try the coffee first whenever I try a new place and I give this one 5 stars. Nice and bold can't complain I even got to enjoy it with honey as my sweetener. My sister had the latte with the pear tart on the side and she can't wait to go back. I ordered the soup of the day which was the split pea soup and I didn't fancy it so much only due to the texture. The flavor was nice though I'm just very particular with the feel of certain foods in my mouth, but who isn't if it doesn't go down easy? The server was nowhere to be found after i told him i had a short time to begin with so it was too late for me to even place another order so I had to go in and wrap things up. The owner was so generous and apologetic for this hiccup not only did he remove my soup from the bill he gave me a free eclair that I was totally down to pay for. (Didn't notice it was free until I was in my car)I am now happily enjoying it which is nice after having left hungry. I like this place I will be back to try a full meal and recommend it for anyone in the area who appreciates good service first, good coffee and tasty desserts. read more

Had Father's Day brunch here- making it my third time visiting La Conversation. It's a really cute, cozy little restaurant and sitting inside or outside both have different and unique charms. The food is really fresh, basic and they give out overly generous portions, IMO. I got an omelette last time and this time, I got the breakfast combo, which comes with pancakes- which are light and fluffy and just perfect. Their coffee is delicious which makes weekend mornings easy with a one-stop for brunch and coffee. And who can say know to the basket of delicious pastries- their croissants are really fresh and delicious. The only reason I deducted one star is because all three times service was very slow and the servers forget. It feels like they're understaffed in that the servers disappear or forget what you asked them for, but they make up for it with great attitudes and apologizing each time. Will definitely become one of my steady go-to's. read more

Came on a Thursday for late lunch. Cute location, small parking lot in the back (somewhat awkward to maneuver), metered parking available along the perimeter as well. I love the outdoor café style seating for two, and inside the ambiance is nice for a small two to four person catch up/hang out. The food is good and I'll say slightly overpriced. I ordered a turkey wrap (they toasted the tortilla which was nice) which came with a side salad and a soy latte and I paid $25.00. My friend also ordered us some desserts (a pistachio cannoli-like pastry and a vanilla frosted heart-shaped cookie). I wouldn't say either were anything special, especially in LA when there are so many cafes and bakeries. The service was beyond slow and our server was an awkward gentlemen who barely spoke and stared a lot. The woman behind the counter however, was great and tried to assist with service when she was not helping someone at the checkout. All in all, I wouldn't go out of my way to come back but the food and latte were tasty enough. (Latte had a delicious layer of fluffy foam). read more

I had the eggs florentine and the croissant was stale, the spinach was wilted and the hollandaise sauce way too salty. I actually look and feel bloated today from the sodium. There was a side of greasy potatoes that weren't cooked either. One of the cutest and most satisfying little cafes! The interior of this cafe is Parisian and over the top decorative a la Moulin Rouge circa 1900. The food is satiating and scrumptuous- I love the Baker's Favorite sandwhich, the chicken and tapenade sandwich on black bread, the Warm Chicken salad, the Pacific Rim salad and of course all the pastries and desserts and hot beverages. The food is served in large portions, and the sandwiches come with these amazing potatoes and salad. The service is very friendly, although the place does get crowded (usually around lunch and late lunch hour) and food sometimes takes a while to appear. The restaurant opens very early in the morning, but closes very early, so do not expect to eat dinner here; anyhow, it is more fitting for breakfast, brunch and lunch. Prices are slightly high, but well worth it for the taste and quality of hte food in this French-style cafe. Come on by for brunch, and feast on an array of foods! read more

I love chicken salad and this place has at least 7-8 versions of it - Mediterranean, lemon, curried, etc. I got the curried which was HUGE, with all white meat slices, artichokes and red onion on very fresh greens with a wonderful yellow curry dressing. ($12.75) It was absolutely delicious. I took half home for dinner. We loved the free basket of mini croissants (loved the vanilla frosting lightly piped on top) and zucchini and corn muffins. Ice tea was 5 -star, and I noticed everyone around us was drinking it. My lunch partner said the french bread on his sandwich could have been crunchier, but perhaps it was because we dined after 2pm on a Saturday. I think the prices were cheap and portions very generous compared to Santa Barbara restaurants. Service was 2.5 stars at best, you had to wave them down to get service, and ours did not communicate well. Took home a small pistachio "cookie" which was okay - more like a muffin - and overpriced $1.75. Easily parked on the street one block away. read more

I just love this place. I have been going there for breakfast or lunch since they first opened in the 90's. The food is wonderful, try the pumpkin pancakes! The pastries are decadent, yum! I have had everything from oatmeal, which I think is the best, which comes with banana, strawberries, almonds, raisens, brown sugar...keeps me full all day long. I love the Dante breakfast, 2 eggs, strips of bacon, or sausage, and pumpkin pancakes. The warm crispy gugyere (spelling) is nice to have with a cafe latte or cappucino. The salads are great.... I can't complain about anything on the menu. There are customers that turn up daily, I used to be one of them, but now at least once a week or more if I can make it. If you have a dog, they are dog friendly, sit outside at a table and they will bring your dog a bowl of water and treats! The decor is so Frenchy French, lots of eye catching things to admire all around the restaurant. I cannot say enuough about the friendly staff. They are the best. Everything about the atmosphere is relaxed and pleasant. This restaurant has become our family tradion, whether it's my husband or kids or mom, we all love it there! read more

My friend and I came to La Conversation for lunch. We sat down at 1:50 pm, was offered drinks at 2:00 pm, got our water at 2:10 pm and was finally able to order at 2:15 pm. He got Eggs a La Conversation and I ordered Black Ham Omelette, essentially scrambled eggs. It is notable that each table gets a free bread basket. We were not offered one, till my friend asked for it 10 minutes after we ordered. Next, came the waiting game. We finally got our orders at 2:35 pm, at which point, most of the customers were already gone and the waiters are already chatting and relaxing, while one of whom is eating lunch on the bar. 20 minutes for scrambled eggs? The food was alright, good but not memorable. Service - horrendous. So bad that we did not leave a tip. We also sat very near the waiters' station and still got ignored. read more

La Conversation is my favorite place in Hollywood that I have been to so far. I have sampled many things on the breakfast menu but my favorite has to be the guava cream cheese brioche is absolutely heavenly! The chocolate croissant is also amazing and the lemon bars have the best lemon filling I have ever had. The location and atmosphere is perfect for a nice brunch and the prices are very affordable. Above all else the staff is always incredibly sweet and nice. I give this place a whole hearted 5 stars! read more

Downside is that the prices are fairly steep considering the comparable places nearby. I suppose it's the French boulangerie theme that justifies the premium pricing. I went to La Conversation yesterday to get a cup of coffee and a muffin to go. I walked in, said hello , how are you to the guy behind the counter. I asked to have the half and half on the side so that I could put it in my own coffee. He snapped at me and said, "we will put it in for you." I said ok but to please not make it too light...on the darker side would be good. I paid for my bill, the coffee came out and it was very light. I asked for another cup. with that, he said to me , "F-----G pain in the A-S" I was so taken aback that I was literally speechless and I said to him, "what did you say to me?" with that he turned around and walked into the kitchen and told me to go to the back of the restaurant and fix my own coffee. I could not get over that someone in a service business would speak to a customer this way. When I asked one of the workers whether I could speak with a manager, they told me that the guy who spoke to me that way was THE OWNER. Stunning, isn't it ? Do not give this guy a dime of the your money. I dropped in there because it was next to the place where I get my haircut. There are many other cafes in LA that are superior---Urth caffe, Le Pain Du Quotidien are two examples of places that are terrific and people are respectful and kind. read more

I just had the absolute worst meal of my entire life. I never write reviews or make a scene, but the food was terrible. It was so terrible that I was actually insulted and feel as though the owners have stolen money from me. I ordered a pretty simple dish - two eggs any style - which is supposed to come with "fruit" "toast" and "new potatoes." I ordered the eggs over easy. The meal tasted as though I had picked it out of an elementary school cafeteria line, and it had been sitting under heat lamps for over 24 hours. The eggs were totally bland - absolutely no seasoning. The toast was ONE tiny slice of wheat toast so old and dry that it actually crumbled into a pile on my plate. I felt mocked by the tiny little side of jam - how do I sop up my over easy egg yoke and have some toast left over for jam with the dried crumbs of one thin slice of bread. The "fruit" was two of the smallest, most thinly sliced pieces of melon you have ever seen. But the worst part of the meal - the part that is absolutely unforgivable - were the potatoes. Supposedly roasted (the waiter did not help make the experience better - he politely told me that I was wrong, the potatoes weren't bad, they were "roasted"), they were DRIED CUBES OF RUBBER! I have never in my life tasted potatoes this unpalatable - not even in my elementary school cafeteria. Do not waste your precious money or time. The people at La Conversation will not value you or your patronage enough to even season the food for you, let alone provide food that is fresh or - gasp - conscientious service! I found the entire experience to be a ridiculous bit of pretentiousness. If you are in the mood for a terrific breakfast, go 1 mile or so further east and head over to the Blu Jam Cafe on Melrose. I wouldn't recommend going here if you're hoping to get a quick bite with friendly service. It took 45 minutes for us to get a turkey burger (that was awful) and cold chicken sandwich which was supposed to be warm. When we complained about the wait the owner of the restaurant had the audacity to raise his voice at us in front of other patrons saying that that the wait had been less than that but in actuality they had put order in late. Of course the manager came out after the fact and apologized for his behavior but our meal was already ruined at that point. She offered us a glass of water or wine, instead of offering to comp the entire meal. There's hundreds of restaurants in LA with great service and food. This is not one that I will be returning to. Oh and if you like dog hair with your meal, you'll love this place! Dogs rattling and shaking themselves all over you and your food. Bon apetit! read more

I love dogs, I grew up with dogs, my family and friends have dogs. If I had a dog friendly home, I too would have a dog. But there is a time and place for dogs and animals and dining out at a small, intimate cafe is not the place. 80% of the patrons had a dog and many had more than one. There were dogs everywhere: inside, outside, in the bathrooms. This place feels like your dining at a dog park. The dogs were barking non-stop, fighting from one table to the next. At one point, a couple waiting outside on the sidewalk (which is where we were sitting) allowed one of their two dogs to constantly LICK the ketchup bottles and sugar packs that were stationed on a mobile food cart. How this place is allowed to stay open by the Health Dept is beyond my comprehension. It was the least relaxing Sunday Brunch experience I've ever had. The scene was chaotic, frenetic, loud and annoying. Enough said. Never going back. read more

My mom and I ordered a 3 egg omelette with Avocado and Goat cheese to-go. The omelette comes with a slice of toast and a salad. My mom requested another slice of toast but on the receipt we were charged for a split order (meaning we were charged to split one meal between the two of us). The lady (that claims she is the manager) that took our order remembered me from Sunday when I asked for 3 tap waters. she proceeded to tell me that she did me a favor and didn't charge me for the tap waters. In addition, the meal portion was smaller than usual (the omelette seemed to be 2 eggs instead of 3 and the salad was small as well). I told the lady that this was the last time we'd ever eat there and her reply was "I'm glad". I eat out a lot due to the nature of my business and I've never encountered such rude behavior even when the food at other restaurants were not up to par... this lady lacks customer service,which is one of the most important parts of working in a restaurant, and other businesses for that matter.
