New patients beware! Avoid La Costa Dental Excellence. I specifically asked if they accepted my insurance and was told yes. They failed to clearly disclose that they were out of network. I was given a written treatment estimate, which I signed and still have, and then was billed hundreds of dollars more than the agreed amount. Not a small adjustment. Hundreds more. They continue sending bills despite the fact that I would never have proceeded had I known the true cost. The dental work was just as alarming. A filling was done so poorly that I had to return three separate times for bite adjustments, and it was never corrected. I stopped going back because I had completely lost trust. I have since been told the tooth is cracked and now need to pay another dentist for a crown. To make matters worse, they told me I had additional cavities that needed fillings. A second opinion confirmed I do not. Between the misleading insurance information, massive overcharges, and questionable diagnoses, this experience has been costly and deeply frustrating. Don't go here unless you really don't care about wasting your money and time. They scheduled my first appointment before verifying my insurance and only told me when I arrived to the office that my insurance wasn't active yet and conveniently said I could just self pay for the whole thing. Which I declined. So that was my first morning of childcare that was wasted to go here. At this time I wanted to make sure they accepted my insurance and that it was in network and they checked it and said they did accept it and I mistakenly thought they would have also let me know that it was out of network because why would I go out of network and pay extra for a dental cleaning? They did not and apparently aren't in net work with anyone, which I'm sure was in the paperwork somewhere and that on me for not reading it line by line. But you'd think they'd be polite enough to answer my original question about it and/or give you a heads up. After my cleaning the financial lady said there was no difference in coverage for treatment with in vs out of network which is also not true. And when I spoke to them on the phone after unnecessarily paying a $150 copay for something that would have been free at another office, they said that there was "no way for them to know" that I would care about paying extra money to go there. I think it's really out of touch to assume anybody wouldn't care about that. So 2 hours of driving back and forth and 2 hours of appointment time and $150 later I still need to just start over with another dentist. Also the treatment plan they presented me with involved me paying 13,000 out of pocket. read more

Amazing cleaning and doctors really care about you. My family and I have been coming for years.

There are a few things that ultimately didn't go right for me here. I was referred to Dr Dankworth by my old dentist and I was excited about his experience treating TMJ. I agreed to his treatment plan to get a de-programmer which cost several hundred dollars. After months of wearing the deprogrammer, I later learned it wouldn't cure my TMJ any more than a night guard. I found this out after seeking a second opinion from an orthodontist, one they recommended I see as a next step in my treatment . The orthodontist examined me and said basically your teeth and bite are great so I cannot help you but may want to see an ENT or physical therapist for your breathing/mouth/jaw issues. Overall, given my experience, I would recommend any future patients seek a second opinion before consenting to a treatment plan. After a few thousand dollars of treatment, my issues have not been resolved and ultimately I've learned that their treatment plan would not fix the issue. read more

One of the most expensive dental offices that I have ever experienced. The office seems clean, but sadly this office exemplifies why family businesses usually don't survive handing them off to the next generation. Dr. Dankworth seems like he used to be good at what he does, but he comes across rushed and just off. Probably my biggest complaint and concern was the amount of pain medicine that he used when he worked on me. I was numb for a full day and the ensuing pain after the numbness wore off was more than I ever had experienced in previous procedures at other offices. To top things off, they don't accept any insurance and their prices are way higher than others. The office manager, Ashley, didn't seem to understand or intentionally did not fully explain the costs to me until it was too late. read more

The friendliness of the staff and quality of care/services were fantastic -- initially. After my x-rays and examination, I was taken to the front office, where they have a number of desks and chairs set up. They had me sit down across from a woman, who explained that "The way it works here is, you pay out of pocket. You will be dealing directly with your insurance company. Your insurance company should mail you a check in 4-6 weeks, but it may not cover the costs of this visit. Will that be cash, check or charge please. $450." I could tell from her mannerisms and from her body language that she was used to having to explain this to people, and that she was used to dealing with people's natural tendency to get upset at this tactic. I was absolutely floored. I had had zero desire to even go to the dentist in the first place, much less begin an inevitable prolonged fight with my insurance provider. I expected to pay the usual co-pay and be out of there. I asked friends/coworkers/other folks if this was normal, and they were all aghast. I've seen similar complaints about this business on Yelp (hindsight is 20/20). The way they pulled this off is as shady as I've ever seen. You do not ambush your clients with this "pay out of pocket" nonsense AFTER you've already done the work. If anything, clients should be told this up front and given the choice of whether or not to continue. Of course, my insurance didn't even reimburse me for a third of my costs (this business is not in my network, I should have checked, that's my fault, not that the network would have made much of a difference with the original pay-out-of-pocket situation) and I don't have the time or energy to fight with the insurance company or with LCDE. I'm tired of being furious about the situation and am looking forward to putting this behind me. I had LCDE transfer my brand-new x-rays back to my original dentist, and of course will not be going back here again. Beware. read more

My son who has autism, is nonverbal and understands language only in a functional context receives dental care from both doctors and Jess, his dental hygienist. These amazing individuals have taken the time to build a relationship with my son. They take the time to read and listen without verbal language. They are compassionate and remember what he needs every time he comes for a visit. For example, he loves a blanket and it's always remembered! The assistants are great too! My son picks up on all around him. If it's not positive and calm, he will not be a part of it. My son ran to his room today to get his filling filled and if that doesn't speak volume, I don't know what does! He has been going to La Costa Dental Excellence for over 10 years. I have been a patient here for about 20 years. I've referred people here and take my 5 kiddos here. If you can get past the front desk staff, this place is amazing and definitely deserves 5 stars. I know it's hard to find good people to join amazing teams but I'm hoping this place does better going forward. Can't get past the front desk to even get an appointment. They are rude, condescending and you can't believe anything they say whether it's about appointments or insurance. Super frustrating because I really do love this place. Unbelievably rude. Not only to me but my healthcare provider as well. Which whom I had to call in the waiting room to discuss my bill because of overcharges on their end. They also told me I have a better relationship with the insurance company then they do. Hence why I called the insurance company in their office. Telling them that this is ridiculous and she's " never had to do this" Once I got my phone back and was talking to the insurance company again. Waisted my time. Came in for tmj help. Specifically asked for Botox letting them know my schedule was very busy. Went into the earliest appointment available and after 15 minutes of Dr. Dankworth worth explaining to me my tmj was someone else's fault, he proceeded to tell me he was out of Botox and that it had been used by the last patient yesterday. But they had called at 5 yesterday to confirm my appt. So they had me come in anyways knowing I couldn't receive the Botox I had asked for. Rude, unprofessional. And the office waiting room smells like smoke. Gross. read more

Initially, I sought treatment for my TMJ from Dr. Danksworth and was pleased with the results. I received botox and a specialized retainer that helped alleviate the pain. During the first six months, I wore the retainer continuously as instructed. However, after that period, I began to experience clenching again and went back for more botox. After about three weeks, I noticed that my smile was crooked and my clenching had not subsided at all so I returned to Dr. Danksworth about a month and a half later to show him. However, his response was less than satisfactory. He dismissed my concerns, stating that he "saw no difference" in my smile, and rudely asked, "what do you want me to do about it?" When I requested a refund, he said "What do you want me to do? Call the botox suppliers and tell them they gave me a bad batch and they need to refund me and my client? I don't get paid for this. I've been doing this for a long time and have never messed up. Your smile muscles aren't even close to your masseter muscles." He then proceeded to try to make me believe that it was my fault that my TMJ hadn't gotten better. Dr. Danksworth's attitude and unprofessionalism were unexpected and hurtful, and I left the appointment in tears. Despite the efforts of the kind receptionist to intervene on my behalf, I don't believe that any resolution was reached. Overall, my experience with Dr. Danksworth left me feeling disappointed and disrespected. I wouldn't recommend him as a healthcare provider. read more

I had such an amazing experience here today. I was referred by a family member and everything from start to finish was nothing short of perfection. I was able to do my medical intake securely online yesterday before I came into the office, today which saved me a lot of time. Everyone from the receptionists at the front desk, Ashley, Sam, Ashley Marie and Ciara to the dental assistant Aggie to Dr. Stephen Dankworth all made me feel at home and welcome as if I was family. I hadn't been to the dentist in years and this experience really made me comfortable and glad I came back and chose this office to come back to. Beware!!! I went to this dentist in July. I gave them my dental insurance over the phone. They said that they would make sure that everything was covered. I went to go have a cleaning and x-ray. I was finished and started walking out of the office and the receptionist says to me wait you need to pay your bill. I was shocked. The receptionist proceeded to tell me that I was responsible For paying the entire bill upfront in the amount of $550 -- simple cleaning and x-rays. I was shocked and said I have insurance. She then offered me a cash pay price which she stated was less money. Again, I said I have dental insurance... why would I pay a cash pay price. She then stated that "delta dental was the only company that didn't pay them directly". She never said anything about it being out of network. She made it seem like it was going to be no problem to be reimbursed by the dental insurance and usually its a nominal amount i would have to pay (50 bucks), i automatically was skeptical of this practice, and told her I thought it was unprofessional that this was not disclosed at the beginning of my appointment or when I called previously. The receptionist actually said to me "we give the best service in town, it's worth it". I called Delta dental today, they laughed at the amount of money this dentist charged. I ended up owing over $300 out of pocket because this dentist overcharge so dramatically. The insurance covered $220. Looking back, the cash price would've been cheaper. This should've been told to me before services were rendered. They also told me that I needed to have three cavities filled, I asked them what that would cost me and it was an outrageous amount like $1000 and I was going to be paying out of pocket. I went to another dentist in town, he stated that the cavities they wanted to fill could just be watched. This practice seems to be motivated by money and up selling. While I found the dentist to be Pleasant, and the hygienist extremely kind, I would never return to this dental practice. read more

Let's face it, nobody loves going to the dentist, right? Well, I was so averse to the dentist that I didn't go for 11 years. I was afraid (based on my past experiences) of the pain, the scraping the sounds and smells even that go with a visit to the dentist. Finally I had a toothache and I had to go. Based on research online and a referral from a friend I chose La Costa Dental Excellence. MIND BLOWN! Dr Kim Corrigan & Dr. Steven Dankworth special in Pain Free Sedation dentistry. I will attest that "Pain Free" was exactly what they delivered. My case was not a pretty one...I had 6 hours of work done including periodontal therapy. I took a pill 45 mins beforehand re my appointment to relax me and then after I arrived I was given additional "medicine" to sedate me. I also was given "gas". I had some heavy duty stuff done and let me tell you, not only do I not remember a thing due to the "amnesia" effect of the drugs... But after my procedure I was 100% pain-free. Not bad for 6 hours worth of dental work. From the moment I walked in, this place was different. None of the weird smells or drilling sounds that go along with the dentist or present. Everything was so high-tech and 1st class. Impressive to say the least. Everyone was friendly on my first consultation and they explained all the costs, accepted my insurance and even had financing available. I have to give a special shout out to Sandra who made sure I was relaxed and comfortable the entire time. She's a real asset to the team over there. Dr. Corrigan is obviously an industry veteran with decades of excellent experience. Bottom line, Don't be Afraid of the Dentist anymore. I promise it's not necessary. Ladies, looking for lip injections? Dr Dankworth is my hero! My mom works for a plastic surgeon in New York and after having my lips done by her doctor last summer, while in town, I knew it was something I couldn't ever live without. The only problem is -OUCH!!!!!! My pain tolerance didn't make that a viable option. I knew if I wanted to keep them maintained I would need to find a doctor here in San Diego who could offer novocaine injections prior. I did a little research and after careful consideration I decided to give La Costa Dental Excellence a try. First off the staff is wonderful. When I walked in the girls were so sweet. They offered me refreshments and we chatted a little while I filled in my paperwork. Immediately after I finished the forms, they called me back. Dr Dankworth came in shortly after and introduced himself. He is so kind and extremely knowledgable. We did a very thorough consultation which put me at ease. I felt he knew exactly what I wanted, and I knew exactly what to expect. Once we both felt we were on the same page he started to recline my chair. That's when the anxiety and adrenalin kicked in. For those of you who have never had injections it's definitely no walk in the park. Something you hate to get but love to have. Then, the funniest thing happened. We started the process and while confessing my fear of the novocaine injections, Dr D had already given it to me. Literally I didn't even realize he had started. I guess it's safe to say he's light handed! I really have no idea how many novocaine injections he gave me or what he was even doing in there. All I know is 10 minutes later, we were ready to start the juvederm. P-A-I-N -- F-R-E-E. Dr D did his thing and during the process I could tell he really wanted them to look good. He took his time while his sweet nurse Tonya held my hand. They both kept assuring me they were looking great. They handed me the mirror and man-o-man, they were right! They were even BETTER then the first time in New York (and my mom agrees!). The few days to follow I had some swelling and a little bruising which was to be expected. I'm now awaiting my post appointment which is next week. I'm confident he'll be happy with the results. They're perfect. I couldn't be happier with my experience. They say the juvederm lasts up to a year. And it should for a price tag of $575! But hey! you get what you pay for and this place is definitely worth it! read more

I have had such an amazing experience at this office over the last couple of years. I was very anxious to start at a new practice after my dentist retired. I was blown away by the level of professionalism - and very friendly staff! I actually feel comfortable sitting in the chair knowing they are doing the most careful work. I have come into the office twice during the COVID pandemic, each time very impressed with the safety protocols in place. The first time I came to Dr. Corrigan, she spent a good deal of time explaining everything to me. Not a lot of doctors spend that much time with you and I really felt like they weren't just rushing me out. Seeing how patient they were with me made me feel comfortable bringing in my 4 year old in for a visit. When I brought my 4 year old son in they were just amazing with him. They made him feel comfortable and he did great with them. They were super patient. I come here regularly and Jessica is one of the best hygienist. She's very gentle, you can't tell she's working on you! You know she works on her techniques and try to make sure her patients are not in pain. I've had plenty of cleanings in my life and she's definitely one of the best. The staff are really friendly, the place is modern, with new technology. You don't ever have a wait around for your appointment. I would highly recommend this place. read more
