Panini with a side warm spinach salad.
    Melanie M.

I tried LaCucina very shortly after it opened and had an okay experience. It wasn't bad exactly. But it wasn't good enough to make me want to come back. Today, however, I was meeting a friend for lunch and a movie in Dartmouth Crossing, and she was footing the bill with a $50 gift certificate so why not? Gotta admit - I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the Ravioli Fritti to start - 3 large lightly deep fried ravioli filled with spinach and cheese, with tomato sauce for dipping. Beautifully plated and very tasty - a great start! I quite enjoyed my strawberry Italian soda as well. Next up was my Panino Arrostito - roasted red peppers, zucchini, portobello, red onion, marinara sauce and goat cheese on multigrain baguette. It comes with "rustic Italian" soup, a side salad or Tuscan potatoes. I went with the side salad and was delighted to find I could choose any of the 6 options on the Insalate menu. I went with the warm spinach salad. Everything was delicious. We both decided to top off our meals with yummy vanilla bean gelato. Service was friendy and super attentive. I see a lot of comments about slow service. We were in no rush so I wasn't really paying attention to the time, but I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. This is definitely going on the list for pre/post movie bites.

La Cucina is what Truro thinks Italian food is. It used to be in that "you can have this building for $1.00" spay painted building out there in Hubtown. They moved to Dartmouth a few years back, then another location in Halifax. La Cucina's problem is they either salt the hell out of everything or your meal will be burnt or cardboard. Last time I ate here I ordered the chicken parm. It broke apart when I cut into it, talk about well done. The time before that I ordered the pasta Milano, and it was like running my tongue up the back of the highway salt truck. To their credit they didn't charge me for either. I've eaten here exactly 3 times because a friend liked it. All three times it was bad. The pizza was better than the entrees.

Customer service, and the quality of seafood was terrible. Group serving was not good.

I have never left a review like this before, but what happened at Quiznos in Dartmouth Crossing…read moretoday was so outrageous that it deserves to be public. I ordered a sub and a drink. The owner rang it in as a combo, which I did not ask for. I didn't notice the mistake until after I tapped my card. I wasn't upset about it, so I said it was fine and that I would grab a cookie so the charge matched what I paid for. That reasonable solution apparently triggered the owner. While I was waiting for my food, he came storming over to me like I had just robbed the register. He started yelling and calling me "a fucking thief." Every time I tried to calmly explain that he rang my order in wrong and I was just matching what he charged me for, he cut me off and got louder. He even threatened to call the police. All of this over a cookie he essentially forced into the transaction because he rang the order in incorrectly. Everyone in the restaurant stared because he was completely out of control. There was no willingness to listen. No accountability. No professionalism. Just hostility and humiliation toward a paying customer who did absolutely nothing wrong. Let me be very clear. There is never a valid reason to scream profanity at a customer, especially when the situation was caused by your own mistake. There is never a valid reason to escalate a harmless interaction into threats of calling the police. Everything about his behaviour was aggressive, irrational, and deeply inappropriate. I went in to buy lunch and walked out shaking because the owner decided to publicly attack me instead of taking responsibility for his own error. If this is how the owner treats customers, by yelling at them, insulting them, and threatening them over something he caused, then this location does not deserve anyone's business. There are plenty of places to eat in Dartmouth Crossing where customers are treated with basic respect. Save yourself the stress and go anywhere else.

So I do like Quiznos. My wife and I pop in once every couple months for a treat and always enjoy…read morethe food. My concern is for the washroom situation. There has been an out of order sign on one of the 2 washrooms for well over 2 years now. The other washroom is in disrepair. The toilet seat is delaminating and, coming from the cleaning industry/infection control background, is not able to be properly disinfected. That's assuming they actually do attempt to clean it. The cleaning log on the back of the "working" washroom is blank. If they repair a couple items and bring the other washroom online again I'd bump it up to a 5 star rating.

I first tried here I think in the spring of 2019 for breakfast on a Saturday around 9am, and have…read morebeen back for breakfast three or four more times over the summer. This is the old Thirsty Turtle location, so I was familiar with the spot, but probably saw a Facebook post about the new business. Generally, I rather support small business restaurants, and the menu looked good, so I'm glad I checked it out. Lucy is very friendly. Most of my visits it has been very quiet, with only her working. Hoping/assuming it gets busier as the day goes on. Mind you, I love my tranquil time to sit and have a delicious meal and Sissiboo coffee with a book in tow. Her menu creations are more healthy than average, different than the basic bacon & eggs, but she seems willing to adjust any dish, so if you are someone who likes to keep it simple, I'm sure that's doable. I loved the Jane's Addiction is the best example of a healthy but tasty breakfast (half a toasted Montreal style bagel that she buys from the business on Wyse Rd, topped with avocado, crisp bacon slices, old cheddar with an over easy egg. Served side side of perpetual salad (mix of kale, brussel sprouts, broccoli, julienned apples & beets, shredded carrot, dried cranberries, pumpkin seeds, sliced avocado, topped with crumbled goat cheese, with poppy seed dressing on the side). The Sweet Waffle (gluten friendly waffle with bacon, whipped cream and choice of sauce) will satisfy the sweet tooth, yet is still a reasonable size to avoid the guilt (I tried the blueberry orange sauce) Yum!. Her Breakfast Bowl (spiced sweet potato home fries topped with two scrambled eggs, tomato, mushroom, spinach, chives with cheddar or goat cheese, meat for $3 extra) is delicious as well. The Classic Lucy (choice of meat and her bacon is cooked to perfection for me, two eggs your way, spiced sweet potato home fries, etc) is just as good as the rest. I can't see everything on the online menu but the Naan breakfast had avocado, cheddar, pico de gallo, egg, etc on naan) and was amazing. I will definitely try some lunch items someday here, but breakfast out is my favorite to eat out and I recommend that to anyone. Atmosphere inside is quite basic, wooden tables, long and narrow in layout with some natural light coming in the front, artwork on the walls for sale from local artists which is nice. I've noticed some people will just stop in to get a coffee and baked good to go. No issues with parking. A nice little spot for the folks in Waverley.
