I tried LaCucina very shortly after it opened and had an okay experience. It wasn't bad exactly. But it wasn't good enough to make me want to come back. Today, however, I was meeting a friend for lunch and a movie in Dartmouth Crossing, and she was footing the bill with a $50 gift certificate so why not? Gotta admit - I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the Ravioli Fritti to start - 3 large lightly deep fried ravioli filled with spinach and cheese, with tomato sauce for dipping. Beautifully plated and very tasty - a great start! I quite enjoyed my strawberry Italian soda as well. Next up was my Panino Arrostito - roasted red peppers, zucchini, portobello, red onion, marinara sauce and goat cheese on multigrain baguette. It comes with "rustic Italian" soup, a side salad or Tuscan potatoes. I went with the side salad and was delighted to find I could choose any of the 6 options on the Insalate menu. I went with the warm spinach salad. Everything was delicious. We both decided to top off our meals with yummy vanilla bean gelato. Service was friendy and super attentive. I see a lot of comments about slow service. We were in no rush so I wasn't really paying attention to the time, but I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. La Cucina is what Truro thinks Italian food is. It used to be in that "you can have this building for $1.00" spay painted building out there in Hubtown. They moved to Dartmouth a few years back, then another location in Halifax. La Cucina's problem is they either salt the hell out of everything or your meal will be burnt or cardboard. Last time I ate here I ordered the chicken parm. It broke apart when I cut into it, talk about well done. The time before that I ordered the pasta Milano, and it was like running my tongue up the back of the highway salt truck. To their credit they didn't charge me for either. I've eaten here exactly 3 times because a friend liked it. All three times it was bad. The pizza was better than the entrees. read more

It takes a lot for me to take the time to write a review..:good or bad. Unfortunately, this is bad. I ordered the Pesto Al Pesto and had it delivered via Uber Eats. The delivery was great but the food was awful. It was very dry (hardly any sauce), the mushrooms appeared to come from a can, and the chicken in it was over cooked. $17 for food I will probably turf. It's a shame. My husband's meal was equally forgettable. He had the chicken parmigiana. We tried La Cucina but won't again. IDK...maybe it was just an "off" night for them, but still. This place was pretty good! We ended up here for lunch with colleagues and I was a little skeptical because of the reviews but I would give it 3.5 stars (if I could!) The service was good - very quick and polite. The young woman who helped us didn't offer additional beverages or tell us about the special but other than that I have no complaints about service! I had a panini with Caesar salad. I can't remember the name of the panini but it had chicken breast, cheese, roasted red peppers and prosciutto. It was good! Just the right mix of ingredients and the bread was tasty. The salad was a little dry and bland but not a bad attempt. My colleagues said their pasta (mushrooms, bacon, chicken) was really great and the verdict on the warm spinach salad was good! One colleague loved her pizza! I tried to warn my folks of the Yelp reviews for the spot.. but my mother had a good lunch experience here, so we gave it a shot. Disappointment from start to finish. We settled down, 6 at a table, and right away.. I noticed the walls were STILL covered in sauces from previous guests (I read that in a few reviews).. surely in your own restaurant you would have noticed by now.. but no. So minus 1 point in my books. They make a Tom Collins which I had, and enjoyed (which if you aren't familiar, it's apparently a tough drink for most places to perfect).. but what struck me was the lack of much of a wine menu... especially for an Italian place. Only 8 types of wine.. and most were bottles only. The menu does feature a few more items than I expected.. but yes.. as previous reviews indicated.. hope you like creamy sauces on your pasta! I do, so I chose the seafood Alfredo pasta. I should mention as well.. seemed like it took forever for the server to show up each time. Then they would only bring partial orders for ours, and other tables... confusing, and awkward for the person they kept leaving out. The bread came about 4 minutes before the meal came (after having sat down for almost 30 minutes).. it was really good, but we didn't get through it before the food (started) showing up. My dish was a little cold when it got to me.. and got colder as we did the polite thing to wait for all the dishes to show. When they finally did, we all dove in. Unfortunately.. the mussels were gamey (possibly because they were cold).. and the lobster still had shards of the shell on it that cut the roof of my mouth. On top of that there was only two shrimp in the entire pasta. All-in-all I was left not feeling full.. so I took the plunge on dessert. I ordered a cinnamon bun.. which was to be glazed in some special Italian sauce (according to my server). Well the sauce has all but disappeared after they microwaved the bun to heat it up. Not to mention all the moisture that was left in them. If nothing else... take from this.. Beg and plead with your family not to go here.. if you can. You will thank me later. read more

We ended up at La Cucina Cafe after a long day of driving, walking, and touring. With sleep beginning to set in and a long drive home ahead of us, we needed to get something to eat. With that being said, I am going to review this spot as best as I can. La Cucina gets a boost because the atmosphere when you walk in is relatively good. The decor isn't your typical Italian restaurant decor that we have become so accustomed to over the years. It's a bit on the darker side, but still has appeal. My favourite part was the tiles that make up the ceiling (make sure to check them out!). The food is what brings this place down. It wasn't anything spectacular to write home about, and we should have known better than to go against our better judgement and choose a 3-star spot. There were 4 of us in my party, and not one person was over the moon with their meal. Various dishes were ordered - seafood, fried ravioli, garlic bread... Nothing was spectacular. My lasagna tasted like it was right from a cardboard box in my freezer. The service could have been better. Our waitress seemed to be ignoring our table for most of our visit, avoiding eye contact any time she walked past. No one checked with us to see how our meals were, to make sure we had everything we needed... It didn't help improve our experience. If I'm ever in the area again, I might go back and give them another shot, but chances are very slim. read more

Tried La Cucina for the first time today. My friend and I were excited to try it, hoping for an affordable option to add to our list of possibilities when we decide to go out. I like the decor of the dining room. It suits the place. Its simple, and comfortable and unassuming. The menu is easy to read and has a good variety. And the prices are affordable. So on that point they hit the nail on the head. My friend and I each ordered a sandwich with a side of their Tuscan potatoes. I ordered one of the paninis. It was supposed to have come with chicken, roasted peppers, mozzarella, and proscuitto (sp?) with pesto mayo. At first glance it looked delightful. Was it edible? Yes. But I wouldn't exactly say it was wow-worthy. There was far too much cheese on it. I know, how can you have too much cheese? Well, you can. It was overpowering. You couldn't taste anything else. Half way through I even questioned if there was any proscuitto even on the sandwich. I dismantled it to check and found a few measley slices. I picked one off to eat and found it was slimy and bland. No flavor at all. The potatoes, however, were quite nice. Service wise, though friendly, they are slow. And don't seem to communicate amongst themselves that well: we had two different servers at different times come to our table to ask us the same thing. Were they somehow testing us? There was only one other table in the place at the time, it can't be that hard to keep straight who was doing what. And with only one other table in, it took quite awhile for our food to come. Definitely not on my list of favorite places. Will I go back? Probably, but simply because its affordable in comparison to other options available in the Crossing. They've got to brush up on their service and fine tune the food prep. read more

Meh not a bad little spot. We stopped in to La Cucina when we had an hour or so to kill before heading to a movie. It's a narrow little restaurant and we were coaxed in by the smell of Italian food. The service was super slow but the food wasn't too bad. They bring bread to the table (I think from frozen) but it was okay. C ordered a pizza with a few meats and was in meaty heaven. I had a caesar salad to start (not good) and a vegetable penne that was quite delicious. I would order it again. We didn't order dessert as we ran out of time and needed to leave for the theatre. Such slow service- but friendly. This place really is trying. I hope they keep working at it and succeed. It would be a great spot to share a pizza and wine with a friend. read more

One of a growing number of restaurants at Dartmouth Crossing, we thought La Cucina would be a good spot to head for dinner before going to catch a movie on a Tuesday night. First impressions were positive: the decor was generally smart, and the pressed metal ceiling added a touch of class. We were shown to our table and served promptly. The menu was simple but covered all of the bases well, and it was mostly very affordable. The wine list did strike me as a bit limited for an Italian restaurant, and the valpolicella I ordered tasted like it had been open a day too long. We had the lobster-stuffed mushroom caps as a starter: they were decent, but I think we expected a bit more flavour. I had the special: veal parmigiana with fettucini alfredo. It was a dissapointment. The veal was rubbery and the alfredo was pretty tasteless. My wife's chicken tetrazinni was a bit more flavorful, but the chicken had a bit of a dry, overprocessed taste to it as well. Dessert was the high point of the meal: the tiramisu was delicious, and the two of us downed it in no time. I noticed a couple of other small things that bothered me as well: the men's bathroom looked like it hadn't been serviced in a while (e.g. the paper towel dispenser was empty); and most of the bottles at the front bar were actually quite dusty. Minor things, but sometimes those small things make the difference between a mediocre dining experience and a good one. Again, I wish that yelp had half stars, because I'd give La Cucina a 2 and a half, but I can't quite bring myself to give it a 3. Prices are reasonable and you could probably have a very affordable family dinner here. Just don't expect to be wowed by the quality of the food. read more

I called in an order for pick up for a large pizza, gave my name and phone number, and was told it would be ready in 20 minutes. When I arrived, the confused male at the counter couldn't find my order, nor could he find anyone who knew anything about it. I was then asked if I was perhaps meaning to pick up an order from Sushi Nami.... Uhhh, no. It's for pizza. Thank you for the assumption that I'm stupid though. I then am told that the person who most likely took my order has left for the evening and they would have to put it through again... but that I shouldn't worry because they told the kitchen to "rush" on it. Now here's my real issue. I understand that inadequate service and poor examples for employees happen. However, the OWNER of the restaurant was behind the bar the entire time this was happening, and she neither said nor did anything at all. She didn't even walk over. No offer for compensation, nothing free, nothing at all. I would assume as the owner of a small business with 2.5 stars on Yelp, you would want to try and meet your customers needs, or at least make up for a bad experience. Nope, nothing. So owner, I do hope you're reading this. That was pathetic. Also, I am writing this as an employee of another locally-owned restaurant in the area and I watch as the owner of our restaurant bends over backwards to meet our customers' needs... Ugh, I'm a sucker for pasta and Italian food, gets me every time! My all time fave is Il Mercato, but this place is pretty good as well. The first thing I noticed when I walked in is the really classy decor - I always feel so fancy when I go into restaurants like this and I feel like I'm being wined and dined. Ha! Pasta was really good and was pretty fast to come considering I went in around lunch time. I got the shrimp & chicken penne....I'm drooling a bit thinking about it. Big pieces of shrimp, balanced sauced that's not too overpowering but not too subtle. They got it just right. Waitress was very attentive and the prices weren't bad at all. Fresh, flavorful, and fantastic meal. I was worried about some of the other reviews but was pleasantly surprised at the quality and finesse of their meals. Every ingredient was high quality and fresh. The fresh bread and whipped herb butter was perfect. The bruschetta had fresh top shelf olive oil and Parmesan. The seafood linguine was perfectly seasoned and sauced. The grilled veggie salad was delicious. Tiramisu was a perfect light ending to a delightful meal. Pasta is 100% a weekness of mine and this place has it good! I've been on SFL (simply for life) for almost 2 years and when I first started it I only knew of 2 places that had a SFL menu, until I found this gem. A very Italian themed restaurant with fresh deserts, delicious hot chocolate and tasty pastas. It's not only a great place for real home cooked food but it has a great healthy menu. I come here quite often to both locations and I've had nothing but great experiences! read more

I went here with one of my friends for the "Dinner & a Movie" special one night. I will say, the interior is comfortable and modern with awesome squishy chairs you can't help but bounce up and down on. SO. My friend & I both ordered the special: Lobster linguine (or some pasta dish with lobster - I can't quite remember). My friend absolutely adored it but I wasn't thrilled. The lobster seemed to be the stuff you buy in cans and for the price, I was hoping to have at least a few morsels of fresh lobster.. We had a late holiday family get together at La Cucina Cafe tonight and we did not have a good experience. Here are my comments: Environment: We had reservations for 17 people. There is a cold/flu going around and three guests were unable to attend. That said, they only gave us enough seating for 16 people. No harm no foul I guess, but if everyone showed up there was no room to expand. We had our daughter with us. She is 4 months old. The bathroom in this restaurant does not have change tables and they also do not have counters. All they have is a pedestal sink. OK so we have to change my daughter on the dinner table. For a new restaurant, this is an unfortunate oversight - change tables aren't that expensive. Food: My starter was a 1/2 Caesar Salad and it was not very good. It did not have Parmesan Cheese on it and the lettuce was not good (sloppy cut, lots of stem) The flavour was minimal and didn't really taste like Caesar dressing . My main was Chicken Parm. I order this a lot at other places and I liked this one the least. The sauce on top of the chicken was mainly large cut vegetables minimal little sauce, which meant there wasn't much left for the spaghetti. I did not like the spaghetti - it was rubbery. My sister ordered Artichoke and Spinach Dip. I have had it before at other restaurants and really like it (especially the one Boston Pizza used to make), so I tried some of hers. I did not like it at all. It was watery, cold and the flavour was bland. Service: The table bread came out the same time as the main course. In my experience the bread comes out with or before the starter. My father ordered a 1/2 caesar salad and mushroom caps for his starter. He did not get his salad, but it did show up on his bill. My father in law ordered a pizza for his main. which did not show up. When he asked the server, she said the kitchen insisted it was already sent to him (and I guess they weren't going to make one now?). Now honestly, what do they think he did, hide it under the table? So she argues with him (really) and then says she can have one made but it will take a while. Since almost everyone is already eating, he tells her to forget it he doesn't want it any more. Two minutes later, she shows up at the table with his pizza. Frustrated, he takes his bill and leaves. My coffee was only topped up once, and that was before I got any food. The coffee tasted fine but they need to keep it coming - especially after the meal. My sister and aunt both ordered wraps. My sister ordered some sort of Caesar Salad Chicken Wrap. She ended up getting something with spinach in it. She does not like spinach. Our server argued with her and said it was not spinach when it clearly was. The server ends up taking it back. They bring out a new one. OK now I know this is hard to believe, but I it looked like they removed the incorrect contents of the original wrap, and refilled it with the correct ingredients. The wrap was stretched out around the edges and looked "filled in". You know what I mean - where the wrap gets cut in half you can see the stuff inside that got cut? You couldn't see that. My aunt's wrap took so long to come, she had just started eating when I was getting ready to leave. For some reason they only give you half your pizza, then the other half if you want more. I realize they probably do this to keep it warm. OK makes sense but my uncle finished his first half and asked for the other half. The server forgot and it took so long he ended up taking it home instead. I don't like this system because it means you have to ask for more of your food, which is annoying when everyone is making conversation at the table. Summary: Some people seem to get good food here, and I did observe other tables that appeared to be getting better service and better food. It seems then, what we have here is a case of poor quality control, leading to inconsistencies in service and food. Quality control is the responsibility of the management, and I think this is where this restaurant is going wrong. Being there and eating there reminded me a lot of some of the "Kitchen Nightmares" episodes where management is not aware of how things are operating (or perhaps, how things should operate). If they have this problem, and you watch those shows, well I don't even want to know what is going on in the kitchen. read more

Visited this location today for lunch. Service was a little slow but we weren't in a rush so no big deal. We ordered paninis which are $10 each and come with a generous serving of soup, salad or roasted potatoes. We both enjoyed our sandwiches but my salad was a bit wilted and I just didn't enjoy the flavors ( ummm canned pineapple in a salad? No thanks)! I filled up on my husbands potatoes instead ;) At the end of our meal I told the waitress about the salad ( not a big issue, the sandwich was filling and my husband had lots of extra potatoes). To make up for the bad salad the waitress offered a free dessert which I decided to take home. As the sandwhich was totally filling and I wasn't starving anyway I thought this completely made up for the salad. Great service! Overall not a bad experience and we will check it out again, probably 3.5 stars. Also, the decor and drinks menu were nicer than I expected. Arrived at 1:00 for lunch and didn't even get a drink until 1:30 (place was NOT busy) Our food didnt arrive until 2:20 and we placed our order at 1:30 (she told us it would be about 20 mins) Not ONCE during our entire experience did she once apologize for the wait time. (She was actually quite rude and never smiled) At the end of the meal on the way out of restaurant, one of our group decided to ask for the manager (IT WAS OUR SERVER!!!!!!!) SHOCKED!!!! Lets just say she handled our concerns the exact same way she handled the service. The girlfriend and I went to La Cucina last night for supper. It was.... well, it was a mixed experience to say the least. Let's get the good out of the way right now - the food was excellent. I've read reviews on here saying that the pasta is sub-par, but neither of us had pasta. The girlfriend had a Monte Cristo panini with veggies and roasted potatoes, and I had the holiday special, a pomegranate mimosa, butternut squash soup, prosciutto-stuffed chicken breast with veggies and roasted potatoes, apple crisp, and tea. Every bite of every dish was delicious, hats off (both of them!) to the kitchen staff. And now on to the rest of the experience... We'd heard about the long wait time that is apparently common here at La Cucina, so we figured we'd be clever and make a reservation. Staff told my girlfriend that it'd be fine, maybe a 5 minute wait. We get there just before the reservation, and we're told it'll be a 10 minute wait. Ok, we figure, still not too bad. We then waited by the front counter for 40 (bloody 40!) minutes before being seated, and 15 of those minutes were spent staring at three empty, clean, and fully set tables. We got our seats, and then proceeded to get the slowest service we've ever received at a restaurant. It was almost 20 minutes before we got our drinks, and that was just the start. Two other tables just in our corner of the restaurant were seated after us, had their orders taken before ours, and were out long before we were. One was leaving just as we were getting our main courses. And a fun bonus - my girlfriend didn't finish all of her potatoes (which again, were fantastic) and asked if they could be boxed to go. The server said certainly and took them back to the kitchen with her. She came back with the deserts, said she would be back with the bill momentarily. Given the service up to this point, I asked if she would bring the doggie bag back out with the bill. She replied quite haughtily that of course she would. The bill comes out, and yes, I had to ask for the doggie bag yet again. All told, it took us just shy of TWO AND A HALF HOURS for a meal. Luckily, we did not have plans afterwards... I left the restaurant feeling kind of sad, to be honest. As I've said (and it bears repeating), the food was really quite good, and the prices were reasonable too. The entire experience was ruined by the service though, and with so many other good Italian restaurants in the HRM, I can't imagine we'll go back. 2 stars, and that's being generous because of the quality of the food. read more

I had the dis-pleasure of experiencing this restaurant for the first time due to a "deal" on groupon. To start the staff was rude and seemed angry about me using the promotional "groupon". The "deal" was for a 16" three topping pizza for $11 the pizza had a $25 value. I picked up the pizza brought it home, and after opening the box noticed either the box was oversized or the pizza was really small. i measured both and the 16 inch pizza measured just under 14 inches. after tasting the pizza it remineded me of "homemade" and by "homemade" i mean a pizza from the yellow Kraft kits. There were a lot of toppings but strangely had no flavor. For a "$25" (plus tax) pizza i was extremely disappointed and will never again eat anything from this place again. read more

Ok, I must say I had a bad first experience with this restaurant. But I gave it a second chance. This time around, both my wife and I had the salmon crusted pasta and the portobello panini. Of the 2, I would say that the panini was way better. We love the warm spinach salad by the side and the home-made bread. But the pasta was, eh, I had better though. I believe pasta isn't their strong point. But I can say that it was better than my earlier one as this time the pasta was well done. Service was great too. The waitress was friendly and very helpful. Went there for dinner tonight and had a decent experience. The decor and ambiance are very nice. We got hot, fresh bread with a side of garlic butter and our main dishes were brought out promptly. The spaghetti amico (mine) and plain spaghetti with marinara (mom's) were good but nothing special. Both had some spice to them. The garlic cheese bread did not taste like it had any garlic in it at all, just buttered bread with melted cheese. The vanilla gelato was bland and the blueberry and peach "compote" it came with also didn't have much flavour. Our server didn't smile and was slow to ask us if we wanted to dessert. Well, despite the poor yelp reviews on this place, I have to admit, our food was quick and delicious! I had Spaghetti Bolognese and she had Pasta Milano. There was a gentleman at the next table over complaining about his 1 hour wait but we only waited for 10 minutes. Perhaps we got his meal! Lol. The server was inexperienced but adequate. The decor once seated was just ok. The plywood tables without table dressing were also just adequate. No offering for a wine list or drinks once we had stated "water to start". Very mixed. I've been there a couple of times and had a pleasant experience (not stellar) but the last time we went dinner was inedible. I ordered the spaghetti carbonara and it was unspeakable. Tasted like scrambled egg, bacon chewy, sauce thin and not cheesy. Icky. To be fair they didn't charge me for it. My dining partner had spaghetti bolognese and suffered extreme digestive upset afterwards. Either there's a new cook there at the moment or they've forgotten how to store food but definitely not recommended. read more
