Make sure and let them know if you have an allergy to onions before you order just cheese enchiladas.
    Annette F.

Ordered the cheese enchiladas. Their red sauce is on point. A little too much onions for me but I'll be sure and tell em no onions next time. My husband had the rib eye in ranchera sauce and it was cooked to perfection. Nothing was over salted. Not a fan of the Spanish style rice or the beans but I'm a spoiled Mexican. This is our 2nd trip here and we will be back.. Service has never been an issue. We're asked what we need when we needed it. Ambiance was a little on the fabuloso side. Meaning I don't like to smell this smell while eating their delicious food.

    La Cueva burrito

We've been eating at La Cueva for many many years. The restaurant is a several generations family owned restaurant. It's a great place. Food really good and consistent. Spice and temperature always hot. Yum. Located on E. Colfax 1/2 block from Dayton. I think the current climate on E. Colfax has put a damper on the number of people that are frequenting La Cueva. It's too bad. Please get it a try. Not the yellow cheese, bland Mexican food that is all over Denver. Owner is friendly. Works there. We want them to be able to stay in business.

#4 tostado, enchilada, bean burrito smothered in green or red chile- with additional burrito.

I LOVE this place - it's been a staple since childhood and is food I can always rely on (home made tortillas make everything better). Service is always great, I tend to get there shortly after open so I never have any issue or delay on anything. The inside hasn't changed a lot since I've been eating at La Cueva (for 25 years) - so it feels like home. Colorful, and historic. It's ALWAYS my first stop when I fly home.

We ended with the pecan tart and espresso martini. It was just the two of us and we were stuffed when we left. They sat us in their outdoor space and it was so, so nice. We LOVED it. Cons for this paragraph is the wait for the food is ridiculous. Why 45 min at least for any dishes. If you're ordering multiple. They're not coming out all at once. The appetizer orecchiette we got was tasty in regard to the texture. Nicely al dente. But it was extremely salted and extremely sour. Unsure of what flavor profile they want to have. Our server recommended the roasted chicken to be the most seasoned dish. I'm not sure whatever they marinated actually puncture the meat. It was cook well but virtually no flavor. Not any difference if you just boil chicken breast by itself. Everything was really pricey for no reason. Sure it was a good size? But if you compare it to restaurants located in downtown, a similar dish is at least 8-10$ cheaper. $14 for a basket of shoes string fries, $41 for roasted chicken and $43 for steak? On par with coors field at least. My assumption is that any new coming restaurants at the Stanley market is just a test run with a safety net to see if the restaurant actually performs well if it was a stand alone business.

They offer cocktails and a light food menu + Charcuterie. I was first to arrive, but shortly later another 10 persons arrived in various groups. Plenty of seating on 2 floors. I sat at the 2 sided bar. I asked for recommendations. They have a classic French champagne, Domaine Berthold Cremant d'Alsace, normally $18 for $9. Crisp and refreshing. I got the Hummus and Onion Dill dip plate with crackers & veggies with red peppers, heirloom carrots, radishes and apple slices. I paired it with a Chilean Sauvignon Blanc. Lots of minerality but not as sweet from Sauvignon Blanc's from New Zealand. Next was the Brioche Melt with cappiola, Brie and raspberry habanero jam & Spanish potato chips. Jennie recommended the Barahonda Monastrell from Spain. A fuller bodied red wine with a bit of tannin to compliment the sandwich. They do not have a service charge, but do add a credit card fee. Very enjoyable happy hour. Jennie said reservations are not necessary on Fri or Sat. They have occasional wine events and you can create your own wine flights.

SPACE: Located in an outdoor mall area, the space is easy to spot with ample parking. The interior is cozy with dim lighting and oak accents, while offering a variety of seating for parties of all sizes. A spacious outdoor patio is also available - perfect for the summertime! We were seating in the middle of the dining room, which was fine with us. The vibe is def cozy chic, which we found welcoming . SERVICE: I had booked reservations in advance, as Happy Hour here is a major hit. The friendly hostess seated us and our server followed shortly behind her. She was friendly, attentive, provided some good recommendations and was pleasant all around! SIPS: While our friend opted for a glass of wine, my husband stuck with water, while I looked at their mocktail menu. The options are limited, but available for a fun treat. I opted to try the "Little Kiss" which was a mixture of grapefruit, sparkling soda, and cranberry. The flavors were on point for the holiday season and tasted refreshing. I will admit, the glass it came in was a turn off. It was like a normal draft size class, which made me feel like I was about 9 years old. Bummer. Otherwise, there are plenty of options for drinkers alike - beer, wine, cocktails, you name it, they have it! SUSTENANCE: The food!! This spot is known for their rustic Italian and woodfired creations - and the menu is fire. I asked for some bread and oil to start - because that sounded divine. It came out quickly and was a nice intro to the meal. My friend opted for the Pasticcio - aka meatballs, three cheese tortellini, slow braised Bolognese, herby pomodoro, bechamel and parm brulee - which he found to be fantastic! It came with more bread, which was perfect for dipping. My friend got a kick out of the presentation as well - in a cast little iron cauldron! I chose the Seafood Pasta - a special of the night. I'll admit, I was a bit disappointed in my meal - as it was a mixture of squid, shrimp, scallops and other - in a red sauce. Not what I was expecting with seafood, but always down to try new things. The seafood flavor overpowered the dish - which made it hard to finish. I opted not to take it home. My husband noshed on the Brasato - Barolo wine slow braised angus short rip, creamy polenta and gremolata - which was DIVINE. The meat was SO tender, delicious and took on the rich wine flavor, perfect over potatoes! YUM! The pizza stood out to me as well, but considering Cattivella is classy, I opted for other. We had a 5:45 PM reservation but the dining room was already full, so we sat at the bar and were immediately offered menus, water, and house-made chips and homemade salsa (Aaaah-mazing salsa!). Service was friendly and welcoming from our server Hunter to the bartenders and food runners -- everyone was happy to chat. We sampled a couple cocktails (Elderflower Prickly Pear and the Spicy Mezcal). If you like mezcal, the Spicy Mezcal is a perfect balance of heat and bright citrus. The prickly pair is too sweet for my taste buds but love the presentation. For my entrée I tried the Nomada's Best of Plate -- a grilled taco, chicken enchilada (I added green chili), and crispy carnitas (I ate these with a tortilla). All three were excellent and distinct; the chicken enchilada was my favorite and likely what I'll order next time. My wife had the crispy carnitas fajitas -- a generous portion and very easy to eat thanks to a thoughtful presentation. Highly recommend -- just be sure to make a reservation.
