Met some friends here for a quickie lunch today. How refreshing to go to a place in Van where there is ample free street parking. Right off the bat, I was impressed. This tiny café reminded me of the boho-esque holes in the wall that I used to frequent when I attended McGill in the early '80's. Small, hippie-ish, fresh pastries, good coffees, unpretentious vibe, small bistro tables and chairs outside. Nothing fancy, but clean and reliable. All that was missing were the op art posters on the walls. Service was quick. The two young adults behind the counter were efficient but not talkative. (I was surprised to read past reviews mentioning the friendly service. I don't think the guy or the girl behind the counter said two words to me). Oh well. I ordered a chicken ciabatta and a canned soda. I found the prices on a the higher side for what you get (my sandwich was $12.50). That said, the sandwich was fantastic: the bread was perfect, and the chicken and melted cheese were great, with a good ratio to the Dijon and other condiments, too. Just a fresh, delicious sandwich. Bathroom is small but clean and well stocked. Good little local go-to joint for a fast meal or coffee break. read more

Friendly, slightly hidden neighborhood cafe. I just happened to stumble onto Commercial Street Cafe and it's a good find. Perfect for some quiet or study time and comfortable enough to meet up with a group of friends. The menu is simple with sandwiches, crepes, waffles and tofu rice bowls. I ordered the grilled burrito with beans, cheese, eggs, salsa and rice and it was good, but I wish it were a bit bigger. My husband ordered the spicy peanut tofu bowl with carrots, beets and green onion. I took a bite and it was decent, definitely healthy. read more

Commercial Street cafe has changed and it not getting better. I stopped first time in years and ordered a medium coffee. Shocked it cost $4. Then only got a half cup. I asked that the cashier fill the cup. How embarrassing. Service has changed. Now here's the cruncher coffee was terrible. I was a regular for many years. Enjoyed the coffee. But today it taste like wateree down mud. So sad. Doubt I will return. And doubt I would ever recommend this place to anyone ever again. It's similar to eclectic neighborhood cafes like Le Marche, but much roomier and very chill. I love that they serve timbertrain coffee, one of my favourite local roasters. I had a very smooth americano misto along with a very large peach/raspberry/ginger muffin. Okay, I did pick the largest one of the bunch. I had to ask about the red rooster logo which had nothing to do with their name. Apparently, one of the former owners was a graphic artist and loved mexican culture, hence the logo. The current owners are portuguese and the rooster is a fortuitous symbol in their culture too. Very serendipitous. It was meant to be. The wooden furnishings provide a casual and comfortable setting along with vintage decor here and there. I'm so glad I can have a great cup of coffee with fresh baked goods in an attractive setting so close to me. read more

Nice place in the neighbourhood! They were friendly and brought out my waffles when they were ready. It was a colder day so there were several patrons taking up spots on the inside (1 person for a table for 4) so I sat outside which wasn't too bad. Hidden jem....on Commercial. Commercial Street Cafe is a secluded spot away from the main strip. Great for studying, reading or enjoying the free internet. A bit expensive, but that's the price to pay for the relative isolation. They have tables, chairs and a couch for guests in addition to park benches outside when the weather is sunny. read more

I really love this place IF I'm going with a friend and am looking for a buzzing coffee shop. There are two sides to this joint, one does seem a little quieter with more lounge seating and the other side is packed with families, couples and gal/guy pals catching up. Every time I'm here though people are having the most intellectual convos it's quite refreshing! (Yes I eavesdrop). I got a drip coffee and a banana choco chip muffin which was moist and big. I actually didn't finish it as I'm not a muffin person but as far as muffins go it was a goody. My friend made the better decision though and got the date and peanut butter ball which was fantastic. It's like an energy ball with cookie dough texture. Mmmmm cookie dough. Anywho, lovely cafe with good people. Also next to a beautiful crafty gift shop! Cute cafe but don't expect excellent coffee. I'm always surprised when a coffee shop exhibiting an industrial Italian coffee maker can't make a proper Italian coffee. Surprised, and disappointed. This place is always busy but I finally tried it recently when there was no lineup. The quartado I ordered was bitter, the milk was overheated and it was 8 ounces, so nothing resembling a quartado. The peanut butter date ball was dry and crumbly and tasted stale. The place seems to be busy so it's possible my experience was a one off but it was so disappointing I am not rushing back anytime soon. read more

Sweet neighbourhood cafe serving Timbertrain coffee. The eats are good too. Have a lunch bowl, so yummy! Also, gluten free. I'd go again. One thing though that I think is a bit much is charging an extra 75c for non dairy. I mean come onnn that made them look cheap. It's also in a pretty cool area. A mix of residential and industrial. Some vintage character, like inside the cafe as well. I like that they've maintained some of the architectural components from what ever this space was before. read more

Lovely neighbourhood coffee shop. We come here 3-4 times a week for a midday Americano. Service is fast and covid protocols make us feel safe- with charming outdoor seating all year, unless it's raining. Occasionally I will get my favourite breakfast item- the maple sausage English muffin. SO tasty! They close early (2pm on weekdays I believe). read more

Food is sub par, service is even worse, overpriced and with the new coffee shops down the street this place will likely end up out of business. I've wanted to like this place but just 9 out of 10 times they disappoint. Their soups are the worst! Paid $17 for 2 soups that were basically water with some chunks of potatoe, previous time the chicken noodle soup was so salty we couldn't even eat it, brought it back and they did nothing. It would be great for the neighbourhood if they got their S$&T together but I'm not confident they will. read more

Well this was delightful. Nicely nestled into the street on a cozy corner, this cafe gives life to a heritage building on the southern arm of Commercial Drive. Kind of a misnomer though- with all the Red Rooster style branding, I think a rooster-related name would help this cafe to be referred to in word-of-mouth recommendations. Came here with a group of Yelpers after a good old IYE in John Hendry Park. I'd never heard of it before but found that it was close by to the park and a good spot for coffee. I was so pleasantly surprised! It's a super cosy spot with a great layout, lots of places to sit, and DELICIOUS coffee. If you go through the doorway at the back there's a second room with a really cute spot by the window with a couch and some tables. You can also see the staff baking which I thought was super neat. I ordered a dirty chai with almond milk and it had the perfect amount of sweetness and came in an enormous mug. Had a great time with fellow Yelpers chatting by the window with our respective coffees and I will absolutely be returning! Seems like a great spot to get some studying done! read more

Got a soup and salad to go. When I got the food, the box of salad felt like it could be blown away by a gust of wind, it was so light I was wondering if there was even food in it. When I got to my workplace and opened it up, the one protein (an egg) was missing. I paid $12 for a handful of spinach. I called the place and they offered me a credit for next time. I saw this reviewed on the front page of yelp on June 24th and book marked it for future reference. The place is just a small block away from the Croation Culture Center on the side where it just slightly turns into commercial drive before turning into Naniamo. The place is a bit of a hole in the wall, however, when you enter you appreciate what this place has to offer. I came here to work on my zone as well as write my thoughts old school style while sipping on a decent London Fog. Heads up that they have no sugar free vanilla, therefore, I just had it plain. Prices are reasonable. Customer service was beyond friendly and awesome. Just a heads up that they close their kitchen at 4 pm daily, however, they have a decent selection of pastries and of course they will still make you a drink. Super thanks to the place for allowing me to plug in my glue gun for craft time. read more

Can get very busy in peak hours so seating may be challenging. But it is a good sign of how amazingly cozy this place is. The kitchen is exposed but is very clean and organized. ONE THING THOUGH - their kitchen closes about an hour to an hour and a half before closing time so you will have to choose from their ready made fare but beverages still gets served until the last minute. Nevertheless, I'm glad to have stumbled upon this place around my new neighborhood. read more

The food is delicious and the atmosphere comfortable. I love the breakfast crepe and muffins. My son has food allergies and they make a couple vegan muffins that are not only safe for him but truly delicious! The daily soups are tasty and interesting. Portions aren't enormous, but they are enough and well priced for what you get as the ingredients taste like quality. The coffee is also wonderful. Staff is friendly and willing to accommodate my sons dietary issues when they can which is lovely. read more

I came here with my 1 year old daughter and two coworkers for a quick midweek lunch. I had the smoked salmon scramble - came with toast and over a bed of spinach. It's counter service which is nice and casual as well as quick. Food came out quickly and was hot and fresh. My dish was a reasonable portion for the price ($11!) The male barista working today was snotty, rude and could not even ask me what I would like to order. Classic good service, or what? To top this off, on their debit machine there's an expected 15-25% tip. How do I say, presumptuous? The previous owners of this cafe, although they did not have organic coffee, exhibited kindness, generosity, and consideration to their clientele. I love this place. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The food is excellent. The coffee is delicious. The music and ambience make the environment warm and delightful. I can't recommend it enough. One thing worth noting is that the layout of the cafe is a little confusing at first. There are two rooms, one with the front counter and one with the kitchen, but both have plenty of seating. A lot of people come in through the door to the kitchen side and feel disoriented because it's unclear where you're supposed to order from. Just keep in mind that both sides are open for customers to use. The kitchen space is also used by Cake Conspiracy. If you're lucky, you'll be able to see the baker making beautiful custom cakes. She's very talented, so it's a treat to watch her work. Recommendations: americanos, the crepes, the spicy peanut tofu bowl, and the burrito. read more

I had the 12oz latte today. I didn't add any sugar and or milk and the drink was fine for me. I usually drink all my teas and or coffee with condensed milk and a lot of sugar. It was the first time I tried a latte. The service was fine and the staff was friendly. Love it. They get my coffee order right, small latte with an extra shot, which many places don't. The coffee is strong but not acid or bitter. Jalapeño cornbread muffing was excellent and the raspberry peach was a nice mixture of sweet and tart. I had a breakfast burrito. A but earnest (I didn't read that it doesn't come with cheese so that's in me) but good salsa and they didn't stint on the guacamole or lime. My new favourite. read more

The place kinda sucks. My breakfast sandwich was bland, the coffee watery, and the staff borderline bitchy (I don't care how hip you think you are, cheer up). The floor needs to be swept, the windows cleaned, and the chairs reupholstered. There were burnt out lightbulbs, the light fixtures were covered in dust and cobwebs, and the door was propped wide open on a cold, blustery day. So much for cozy. I visit the cafe every now and then when I'm hanging out with friends since it's walking distance from where we live. The cafe has a very hipster/urban ambience.I like that they sell paintings from local artists. Most of the time the service is really nice but one or two certain people that work there tend to give off an annoyed vibe.Their drinks and food are pretty good but the sandwiches and soups are a little overpriced.The food is really fresh and nicely plated.The location of it is pretty deserted but it's a hidden gem. The coffee ( I ordered a decaf Americano) was 3 stars. The croissant was 2 stars. I will probably try it again as I have a friend who lives really nearby. I walked in one of the two doors and seeing there was no counter sat down at a table and waited for my friend and a waiter to serve me. No one approached and i waited 20 mins there until my friend arrived and pointed out there was another room with a counter to order from ( I'd assumed it was the entrance to the kitchen) . I love this homely new cafe. The staff are super friendly, there are plenty of comfortable, old school dining room tables to sit around, the food is limited to small dishes but yummy and really inexpensive, and they have free wi fi (which is handy for me). The Commercial Street Cafe is located in what I think is the coolest most undeveloped section of Vancouver, this IS this hippest little secret in town right now. After parking on my way walking here I pass by "Vancouver's Tool Library" where you can check out tools..... A Organic Dog Spa, and Urban Tails Resort Boarding for cats! all on my venture to get here. THe cafe is located in a beautiful cosy sunny corner location.. 1st thing I notice is the super amazing future retro record player playing real vinyl. I know I'm gonna dig this place. An old friend just moved into this neighborhood and recommended the place. I decided to drop by and check it out the other day and it's definitely on my radar now. Plenty of seating, great coffee (from Matchstick Roasters), a tray of day-old muffins...still tasty and what a deal. I asked for a glass of water and they gave me a glass and a sealed bottle of lemon infused H2O....nice. The staff were friendly, there's an awesome space-age record player spinning classic hits and really...reading the paper, sipping on coffee while ELO plays over the speakers...classy. I used to live a block from this place. I'm not a big coffee connoisseur, but I can tell when coffee is delicious. I don't know what kind of beans those guys use, but dayum - those are the best lattes I've ever had. I always wondered - how can you make your coffee so much more delicious than any other coffee - do you put like coffee msg in there or something? And the barista just always looked like he was super into it, like he was making love to my late. Anyway. I digress. Delicious latte, good everything else. Thumbs up.
