I'm not usually a fan of creamy fillings, and they barely put any inside -- though the cream on top definitely helped. It could've used some texture contrast, maybe a sprinkle of pecans or another crunchy element. The real highlight here was their almond croissant -- buttery, generously filled, and topped with plenty of almond flakes. A true classic done right. read more

First visit but definitely won't be the last! Tried out the horchata latte and it was sooo tasty! Loved the cinnamon flavour mixed with the espresso! Even better was the yuzu sparkling matcha drink that surprised us with how well everything paired together! Definitely going to try making my own sparkling matcha! read more

Matchstick has some of the best pastries in town. I love their pain au chocolat, almond croissant, chocolate cookies and more... They also have some nice Too good to go bags. Ordered brew coffee as it is my to-go option. The coffee is just alright, standard level. It has a no acidic taste, which I like. It is not bold or overly bitter. To be honest, the coffee didn't surprise or amaze me. My dad tried the almond croissant, and it was average quality. The staffs were friendly and chilled. There's quite a line and busy, but the employees were still very welcoming and didn't rush to get the orders done (the employees' pace remained constant). The coffee shop has a nice interior design, but it is hard to find a table or a quiet spot to talk and enjoy the order because of the long waiting lines and crowds. Overall, the shop offers a standard level coffee and food. You can stop by if you are in the area. read more

Matchstick manages to maintain high quality across all Vancouver locations.  The atmosphere was clean and modern.  I like the place's natural lighting and the wood furniture's stylish warmth. I got a Masala Chai Latte.  The drinks only serve one size cup here, and it seems a bit small, but everything is worth it.  It tasted amazing, and the latte art was beautiful.  Also, they don't charge for substituting oat milk for dairy. It's fine. The salmon toast was underwhelming (most places serve salmon toast with avocado, but this place doesn't and charges $18 for it). The mushroom toast was better. Service was unfriendly but coffee was decent. read more

I usually stay in the West End when I visit Vancouver, and nowadays I visit here for coffee a lot. It's a pretty good spot to relax with coffee and get a couple things done. It gets busy in a hurry by around 8am-9am, but the coffee is solid/strong, and there's quite a bit of communal seating. Staff is laid back and friendly, and ordering's pretty easy (though the line starts in the back of the cafe, which can confuse a few people). As others mentioned, it's not the best for table-for-two conversations because most of the seating is communal tables or outdoor. They have wi-fi and it's a good space to sit down and do some work, but there's not a lot of power outlets so it's better for books and paper type work. The one other thing is their limited food menu is a bit pricey. It's probably decent food but I avoid it given the prices, and they also put a lot of mayo-style spreads on items, which I don't care for. Some may find the snacks worthwhile, though. Overall, it's a relaxing spot to hang out with solid coffee offerings, and one I consistently come back to when in town. read more

This place has grown on me over the past few visits. The interior is decked out in a color palette of Instagram-approved dusty rose and teal, with a mix of community tables and individual seats. On my first trip I ordered a chai with their house made oat milk, which was adequate, but for $5+ didn't match the spicy creaminess of my favorite chai in the city (from Rocanini on Beatty Street). However the food that I sampled was quite good--a beautiful cardamom cinnamon bun that could've been straight out of Stockholm, a delicious tomato soup that managed to be both vegan and not overly acidic, and a fresh hummus and carrot combo. Counter staff seemed to vary in terms of chattiness and warmth, but in general made the ordering experience efficient, and demonstrated their knowledge of the menu. I've been here a couple of times now since they opened, in different contexts - sometimes to sit down, sometimes just to grab something to go; sometimes getting something sweet, other times something savoury. Much as I was excited to see a new coffee shop open up near where I live, I have to say that Matchstick feels just okay. Nothing stands out - the drinks (from chai lattes to mochas to london fogs and more) are all okay, avoiding the pitfalls of excessive sugar but also not having much flavour to them. They don't do multiple sizes but the cup sizes are small, which I appreciate, though they're priced more like large drinks at other shops. The baked goods are fine, nothing memorable. Everything is a little bit pricier than I'd like to pay for the taste, though - I'd rather go somewhere cheaper and simpler, or somewhere fancy where the quality really matches the pricetag. The physical environment itself is also not great for staying, unless you're in a group. It's dominated by communal tables, which makes for fairly uncomfortable seating if you're looking to sit down with somebody one-on-one, or if you're looking to do some work or studying on your own. And there aren't many outlets, or if there are they aren't very visible. The decor is all very nice, though, you have to give them that. And so far most of the staff have been very friendly and nice. But in terms of the food, drinks, and the experience of sitting there, I feel like I gave it a fair shot, and I'm not tempted to go back when there are other coffee shops just down the block. read more

Excited to see a new coffee shop opening in the west end!! I'm always looking for a a bit of a stroll with a caffeine destination on my lunch break and I'm pleased that matchstick is here for me. I've definitely had their coffee from other cafes that serve it and I've been to their other locations. I'd say that their staff was quite knowledgeable and experienced on my first visit. The space is bright and quiet. Right on the first level of a new residential building in the west end. I was excited to see earl grey muffins in their selections of pastries! Definitely a pick me up treat that we all need in our lives! And they don't use muffin cups There's a selection of lunch items and loaves of bread in addition to their beverage offerings. Absolutely loved Matchstick--the coffee had so much depth of flavor. The store was beautiful, with ample seating and so bright due to the accordion walls that can open to the patio. I also had almond butter toast which was so satisfying--their bread is dense and freshly baked, and it came with a huge puddle of jam on the side. This location was on my bucket list before the pandemic, however, of course most coffee shops that I've been wanting to go at the time had some complications. I was in the area and they are open for business. There is some seating inside, they're doing the social distance thing. The seats were busy at the time, therefore, instead of sitting to do the comic I had mine to go. I will be back when they open up more seats. I had a vanilla latte with single shot. Prices were in live with all other coffee shops and the staff were nice. read more

They served my breakfast sandwich with a cold egg. The server assured me it was pre-cooked, but they had just forgotten to reheat it. I asked him to have the kitchen heat it up, and they said it would take a while as they were in a rush. I said okay. It's now been thirty-minutes, I don't think I'm getting my breakfast sandwich. Don't order the Sencha green tea, it's watery and the sediment is powdery. They don't use tea-bags. Great cookies, so three stars for the cookies. read more

Me and two friends decided to try Matchstick to see what it's all about they only had one size coffee for everything and only one brewed coffee and it was small also a Chocolate croissant came to almost $8.00 I was a little shocked but said what the hell the coffee was worse then the old MacDonald's coffee croissant was OK just OK service was pleasant but won't be back at least Starbucks you get what you want not have to settle for a small bad tasting coffee with no flavour read more

It's to hard to enjoy a coffee when the music is so obnoxiously loud. We felt like we where being blast out on purpose Somthing that I see another person wrote in their review. It seemed that the music was getting louder and louder but I guess that could be faster (more annoying) paced music start up it was ridiculous! I have in the past ordered a second beverage as well as the company I'm with so why rush customers away? The music was so loud that as we where leaving someone commented well covering there ears that it was an affective way to free up seats. I replied that they could just simply put chairs outside to go with the tables that where set up! This was early in the day so no reason for the chairs to have been brought in. read more

Wow, the service was so poor here. Three staff members working but all ignored me and didn't even take my order. I stood there at the counter for over 5 minutes ready to order and then left due to to the poor service. One was clearly new and didn't know how to steam milk. The other saw me and continued to fold towels slowly and the other was chopping. Not sure why they didn't even bother to take my order. Shop was not busy at 7am. This was my first time checking out this new coffee shop on Davie and it will be my last. Not impressed especially when coffee shops are normally not only all about ambiance but also good customer service, which this place was severely lacking. read more

Very cozy! The seats are surprisingly comfortable, the coffee is excellent, but most of all, I love their tea selection. The fact that the tables are large enough to comfortably accommodate a sketchbook, laptop or tablet are an added bonus! read more
