If I could give LA Custom Tile 10 stars I would!! Mark was a consummate professional from start to finish. We had essentially renovated our entire home by this point (flooring, roofing, plumbing, drywall/paint, counters, foundation) and by far Mark was THE BEST contractor we have had the privilege of working with. First and foremost, his work is excellent - he is a true craftsman who takes pride and cares immensely about his work. He has 30+ years of tile experience and is a perfectionist, as evidenced by the perfect job he did on all our bathrooms. I am especially in love with the herringbone tiles in our powder room. I didn't take photos of this, but the previous tiles in that room were 3" hexagon grey marble tiles, which needed saving to replace in another bathroom shower which the plumbers knocked out, so he individually extracted each one with a diamond drill, polished them, and expertly installed them in the shower such that I can't tell the difference (it was an extremely difficult request given the size, shape and material of the tiles, and no other contractor I asked thought this was doable). Second, he is honest, reliable and his prices were very reasonable. We had three bathrooms that needed remodeling and he went the extra mile and provided different proposals that would look the best and was the most cost-effective (even though it made his job more difficult). He was prompt and came on time daily, and provided updates on the progress of his work. He went above and beyond and fixed things in the house that I didn't even know needed fixing! (He saved us $1000 by letting us know our bathroom window which wouldn't lock didn't need replacing, and simply drilled a hole for the latch to catch onto). Lastly, he is truly a kind, friendly and caring person. He is the only contractor I trusted with our house keys to work unsupervised while we were away at work. He was incredibly respectful of our home, took the time each day to lay cardboard walkways so as not to dirty our common areas, had three pairs of shoes he would change into (one for outside, one for our hallways and one for the bathroom construction area), and would clean up each day such that when we returned from work, we could enjoy our home without dust and construction. If that isn't enough, he is an animal lover and was a total sweetheart to our pet. We enthusiastically recommend Mark to anyone and will definitely be using him for all of our future tile projects! read more

When I had to look for a tile specialist to cut an air gap hole and a soap dispenser hole in our new fireclay sink, I wasn't all that hopeful I'd find someone who would be willing to work with me. First of all, it was a tiny job, so tiny I feared it wouldn't be worth it for them to make the trip out. Secondly, I wasn't even in the same state as the sink, so the logistics of the job were a little wonky; My mom was housesitting/catsitting, and SHE was who was going to have to deal with whoever showed up. L.A. Custom Tile was on my list of businesses to call, and by the time I got to calling him I was about ready to bang my forehead on my iPhone, because all the other places I'd called were answered by people who sounded like they'd rather get stabbed in the eye than bother to talk to anyone, let alone me. I got Mark's recording, and I left a message, again without much hope I'd hear back. Within just a couple of hours though he had returned my call, and even though my learned cynicism attempted to prevent me from feeling like I'd actually managed to stumble upon a for-reals, competent, decent, not-a-flake tradesperson, after the conversation was over I felt remarkably pleased with how it had gone; He gave me what seemed like a reasonable quote for the job, and was kindly willing to wait while I continued to search around looking for a decent plumber to take on the rest of the sink installation job. He also asked me to confirm with the plumbers what size hole they'd need drilled, just in case they had some non-standard size in mind. Then, after I did manage to secure an appointment with the plumbers he worked with me to find a time in the next couple of days to get him in BEFORE they showed up (as they really couldn't start their part of the job without those damn holes having been cut first). It all was so short notice that I was concerned he wouldn't be able to fit my little sink into his schedule , but, it was all for naught as twenty-four hours later there he was, standing in my kitchen and sizing it all up. Once he was here, it was clear he was one-in-a-million. He arrived right when he said he would, and he downright delighted my mother who thought he was the pretty much the cat's meow (she even took a photo of him at the end to remember him by! lol). He was so patient and accommodating with both her and me while she sent me phone photos of the sink with tape on the spots they'd thought I'd want the holes cut, and then me calling back to tell them to move the tape this way and that (because I'm persnickety, I guess :). Finally I was able to give them the go-ahead to drill baby drill, after which followed a nail-biting twenty minutes while I waited for the phone to ring with news that the sink had survived the procedure as, from what I could tell from the aforementioned head-bangingly asinine conversations I'd had with the various plumbers and tile guys I'd talked to before Mark, sinks will break if you stand less then fifteen feet away from them while merely HOLDING a drill - even if the drill is not hooked up to its power source - so yeah, I was totally worried the sucker had cracked completely in two or something equally dramatic the minute Mark was breathing the same air it. In the end it came out beautifully. Two simple, little, perfectly round holes cut exactly where I wanted them. Not a scratch on the sink anywhere. He didn't even require a hose to run over it while he drilled (maybe fireclay doesn't need that, but, my mom said he just progressed really carefully, methodically, slowly and skillfully while cutting. She summed up her review of his job well done with "he really knows his art!". High praise!. So, I almost cried with happiness when she sent the photos of the finished job, but instead I instructed her to hand him the cash (because he doesn't seem to take credit cards - at least for such a small job - so be forewarned and/or ask when you call him) and to thank him profusely. The plumbing job the next day went pretty smoothly (especially in regards to holes provided by Mark). I cannot say enough how nice it was to find him, and how good a job he did, in every possible way. If ever we need more tile work done I will look forward to working with him (hopefully this time in person). Mark has since tiled our fireplace, replacing old, yellowed tiles with a beautiful Moroccan blue tile. The vertical part of the mantle was narrow so he suggested building it our so the size of the vertical part would be big enough for a whole tile and not be cut in half.
