On second thought, maybe I should have ordered the fish. To qualify, for Indianapolis, this is a good Mexican restaurant. The salsa is still a little soupy, but it's thicker than the other places I've been to, and it has a bit of kick. You can actually get a tomatillo or ranchero sauce. And your entree is probably not going to be covered in some strange cheese sauce. Why should I have ordered the fish? For one, Escollera has more fish dishes than any other Mexican restaurant I have seen. It definitely seems to be their specialty. Secondly, this place is somewhat authentic. While I was expecting boneless chicken breast for my chicken dish I was served chicken on the bone. While not terrible, I was looking forward to the boneless breast meat. Throw in the loud juke box playing cumbia, and futbol on tv, and you've got as authentic a place as you're going to see around Indy. If you can get past the fact that you're eating in a building that looks like a worn down tool shed, you should have an enjoyable meal. But, I would recommend you start with the ceviche and go from there. read more

Fantastic authentic Mexican food! I'm not a cheapskate by any means, when I saw the prices it was more than what I expected due to the overall decor, but it was so good. And entree is great portioned and the chips and tortillas are exceptional. Only this I would change is the service. My experience here was somewhat confusing: while the food and service was good, they charged my friend and I more once we went to pay than what was clearly printed on the menu. We even politely double checked everything and the orders were correct, they literally just charged us more than what was quoted. It's for this reason that I am hesitant to go back, I can't afford to eat somewhere where I literally don't know what I'll be paying at the end of the meal! read more

I am new to the Irvington area and of course am looking for the hidden gems. Being that it is Indiana and not many people like to venture out into unknown food styles, we didn't know what we were in for. It could only have been horribly bad or unmistakeably AWESOME. Cozy, because it is small, dining with easy to find place to sit. The waitress brought out to us what looked to be homemade tortilla chips with homemade salsa which had just the perfect amount of spice for my sensitive palate. My father ordered the steak burrito and my mother ordered the chicken burrito. I myself ordered the cheese enchiladas which came with a side of rice and beans, oh and I got the mole sauce on the side not knowing if I would like it or not. The mole sauce was great, I for sure would get that again. My mother stated that she really enjoyed her chicken burrito using comments such as the tortilla shell was sweet and the chicken was cooked perfectly. My father on the other hand said his steak burrito was slightly on the dry side for his liking. He did follow up that comment with steak burritos usually are on the drier side. My cheese enchiladas were great along with the rice and beans. I received 4 small enchiladas that were in a corn shell. Just the perfect amount of cheese inside. Just ever so slightly were they on the greaser side but I didn't care. We were so full that we didn't have room for some dulce. This is a wonderful, authentic, Mexican restaurant and is the best Mexican food I've had since I lived in Tucson, AZ. I had the Texas Fajita and I swear it could have fed two people. Definitely get the guacamole. The service is slow - probably a 20 min wait for food when they're busy - but definitely with the wait. Looking forward to enjoying the leftover fajitas for dinner! Also, don't be turned off by the appearance of the restaurant or the location. I had to talk my teammates into actually stopping and they're happy we did. read more

I've driven by for years, without stopping. Why?! This has awesome guacamole, taco pastor was great. All in all, highly recommended!

The tacos are simple yet really great and a good price. Loved the warm homemade chips and the salsa. We just moved in down the street from the place and will probably become regulars. I wish I could rave about this place. I ate there with my husband and daughter during the Luminaria. Indeed, the ambiance is lacking and the jukebox blared a number of Mexican pop tunes. Being from NWI, lack of ambiance is sometimes a sign if really great food. In this case, it was just so-so. I ordered shrimp empanadas and my husband had shrimp diablo. Both were overcooked. The chips and salsa look to be made in house and they are delicious. Looking around at what others were enjoying it seems you have to have some insider knowledge on what to ask for. The group next to us had tacos, seafood soup and tortas that looked amazing. I plan on giving this a second chance. read more

I'm confused by the positive reviews. Way too pricey for the quality. The chips were very good, salsa was bland. I ordered the chicken mole and was disappointed to get chicken legs (I can't stand chicken legs). The mole was bland and did not have that rich sweet n spicy flavor I like. The beans were bland and the rice looked and tasted like they are from a packaged mix. The service was a little slow but otherwise pleasant. I will not be back. They just updated the menu recently, it's no longer entirely in Spanish! Either way other than la parada some of the best authentic Mexican in town. One of the few Mexican restaurants to actually use chihuahua cheese and try the bistek a la mexicana. read more

Go anywhere but here and if you do go here, do NOT under any circumstances order the chicken enchiladas. I have no idea why it has so many multiple star reviews on Yelp. It does not deserve them. I visited Sat. 8/31 and I will never go back, which is too bad as it's close to my house. I'm pretty easy to please but I literally could not eat my meal, it was so bad. The tortillas had been dipped in the nastiest, oldest, most offensive oil imaginable so I thought I'd at least eat the chicken out of them. Oh no, the tablespoons of miscellaneous mostly dark chicken parts in the enchiladas were worse. They were at least a week old, horrible tasting, and as inedible as the enchiladas. Luckily the meal came with chips, a little bit of salsa, refried beans, a little diced tomato, and some iceberg lettuce I could consume. Add to this blaring music from a wall jukebox in a diner-sized eating area with about 12 tables and box fans blowing more warm bad kitchen/cleaning agent/bathroom smells at you. For this privilege and one semi-warm can of beer I had to fork over $17 and take Tums at bedtime. Do yourself and your intestines a favor, patronize other Mexican restaurants in the area, but not this one. read more

This place has the worst service. The food is average but even it was excellent, it would not be worth what you have to go through to get your food. I have been there twice thinking that maybe the first time was just a mishaps but apparently it was not. Food takes forever but if it is prepared in a timely manner, don't worry, they won't give it to you until it's cold. Even when I ordered carry out the girl behind the counter ignored me when I walked in, and after finally acknowledging me she failed to tell me that the bag on the end of the counter was my food. I honestly stood there for 15 minutes under the impression that my food was still being prepared and she just sat there ignoring me. She finally realized I was still standing there and decided to ask me if here was anything else she could do for me. Obviously my food would be nice, but I took the high road and decide to politely let her know I'm waiting for my food. She chuckled at me and told me it was over there on the counter. I then said, "really? I've been standing here this whole time waiting?" To which she said "well I didn't want to kick you out." I won't be back. read more
