I had the menudo and it was bland. No hominy, which is typical for some regions of Mexico, but the broth was not very tasty at all. And no oregano to season it with. Its crazy how many times I felt like I've seen this same menu lol. So its like the matrix has a glitch when I try a new Mexican restaurant. This is not the same El Maguey that I'm used to and I'm not sure if they have any affiliation. But this one was better than my usual one. The Texas chimichanga was so big and delicious. It had steak, chicken, and shrimp in it. I may have gotten a full 7 bites in. The rest had to come home in a to go box. My girlfriend ordered the Mar y tierra. She loved it. Neither one of us had Spanish rice that good in a long time. We could barely eat our food for loving on the rice. The service was pretty good despite the language barrier. There was someone interpreting back to our waitress. And she continued to check on us and make sure our drinks were filled through out the night. From what I heard the patrons weren't speaking English either. Music was going and there was a Spanish version of family feud that I honestly couldn't turn away from. We were the center of attention for the first few moments unintentionally. But after a while the hard stares stopped. Overall the food was SOOO fresh. Fast. Seasoned. Spot on. I love this place! I always get the morrara a la diabla. It's a whole tilapia deep fried then smothered in a thick hot sauce. It reminds of a Nigerian dish and it keeps me wanting more. It also comes with lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and avocados on the side with helps balance out the heat. The corn tortillas are my favorite in the city and they are made from scratch here. I gave them a 4 because some of my veggies weren't as fresh as I would like, but they typically have a great track record. The food is always hot and ready when I arrive after calling in my order. I can't speak much for their other menu items because I always come for the fish, but the place is always packed. Nestled behind an out of place Jack in the Box and Steak N Shake, is this terrific taco treasure trove. First, all of their tortillas are made fresh and seriously nothing beats handmade tortillas. The soft and warm tortillas cuddle your choice of meat with the same vigor and exuberance that you had the first time you spooned your significant other. With slightly above average carne asada, tender carnitas, and mildly spicy citrus al pastor (pork) you seriously cannot go wrong with your choice of meat. The tacos are on the slightly more expensive side ($2.25/per) but because they make handmade tortillas it is worth it. I have not had many other things on this menu, but my rule of thumb for Mexican restaurants is, if they can make a delicious carne asada taco, they can probably make most things well. Give this place a try and definitely try tacos al pastor with cilantro y cebolla. P.S. they only serve two kinds of salsa: a very mild salsa specifically for their chips and a spicier red salsa, both of which are great. read more

When you go to most chain Mexican restaurants you get the run of the mill white-washed experience. This place is authentic. Dishes that make you feel like you took a trip south, ran into a local, and they took you home for dinner. The atmosphere is upbeat and fun, lots of people having a good time, and a staff who knows how to make suggestions. My husband ordered nachos and the waitress suggested he try the fajitas instead and he was not disappointed. Dishes are served on multiple plates, family-friendly kid menu, and a staff that doesn't bug you every ten minutes. I am very picky when it comes to liking a Mexican restaurant and when I was recommended to go to this place by a fellow Mexican, I trusted them and am in love with this restaurant! This is legit food. They hand make their corn tortillas. The salsa is fresh and you never know how spicy it will be each time you go in, but never too spicy. The huaraches, sopes, gorditas, tacos, and burritos are the way to go. I love that I can order one or four tacos and get a variety but not have a side of rice and beans with it. The al pastor has pineapple in it, which you don't find a lot of places, which I love! They offer a variety of meat for the tacos, so be adventurous. I love tripa (gut), which may be scary for some, but it is just crunchy goodness. The lengua (tongue) tastes like pot roast in that it is so tender. I have taken several friends there and the have tried the tripa and lengua and enjoyed it. Some food items you might have to ask for less pepper/spice because it can be spicy. The burritos are as big as my forearm and I'd recommend the green sauce for the none spicy route. The red sauce is delicious, but can be spicy. It is also a great place to practice your Spanish speaking skills. I believe Sunday is karaoke night, which gets packed, and is great entertainment. I've been here a few times with work friends when I had an office in this part of town. It is seriously authentic Mexican. Usually the Mexican joints around town all have the same menu regardless of name. This one does not! It has authentic and wonderful street food and cuisine you'd find in Mexico, including less popular dishes (to Americans) like menudo and tripe. The dining area is brightly decorated, and the staff is nice. Just be aware they don't speak a lot of English so be direct and simple in your ordering unless you have someone bilingual with you (which I frequently did the times I've visited). The tacos are wonderful! They are simply dressed with usually onion and cilantro with a lime wedge on the side. That's normal for street food in Mexico! Traditional Mexican tacos don't come with cheese and a lot of fixings (source: sister lives in Mexico). If you want the real deal, come here! read more

My New Favorite Mexican Restaurant! I had to visit this place twice to be sure that it was indeed awesome and not a fluke. I'll be going back many times too, of that I'm sure. The menu features lots of family size meals, many a la carte items, items listed by category and a lot of stand alone specialties. Everything sounds good according to the description, many dishes feature a mixture of meats. They have a good selection of Mexican beers, fountain soda and tea and some bottled sodas. As expected, the waitress brought out some chips and salsa for us to enjoy while we thought about our entree selections. But the quality if the salsa was an unexpected delight - it had a lot more flavor, zing and spice than your typical taqueria salsa - it did have just a touch of heat, which I loved, but it may be a bit peppery for mild mannered palettes. During my first visit I had the bistek ranchero (this is from memory so it's that or something similar). It had tender beef strips cooked in a tangy sauce - it was accompanied by rice and tortillas. The beef was melt in your mouth delicious and seasoned as well as the salsa was. A must try! For my second visit (the salsa was just as good - hurray for consistent quality!) I opted for the Fajitas El Maguey - for $10 and some change it seemed too good to be true since it included beef, shrimp, chicken and chorizo (as well as bell peppers, onions, guacamole, beans, lettuce, pico de gallo and sour cream with 3 tortillas). Well it was true and came in a mountainous portion (I will be having the rest for lunch tomorrow). The chorizo flavored the rest of the meats, peppers and onions perfectly. It was some of the best fajitas I've ever had, loved them! My wife (the picky one) had a steak taco and a chicken taco with a side of beans - she was sold on this place after one bite - the tacos were filled with tender seasoned meat, onions and cilantro and the beans had the texture and flavor you expect from a place that, as you've been reading, knows for to stimulate your tongue. PLUS as an added bonus, the waitress brought out two squeeze bottles of sauce - a verde and a roja, both tangy and tasty. If you like Mexican food with flavor, some spice and friendly service - then check this out - check it out a few dozen times! read more

I can't believe I'm the first and only person to be reviewing El Maguey. This place is my new favorite Mexican place in Indy. I have been 3 times since finding it, and can't wait to go back. It came highly recommended by one of the Mexican employees with whom I work, and I would make the same recommendation! The service is excellent, the food is absolutely delicious, and the ambience is very nice. I can't think of anything that I don't really like about El Maguey. It is located in a relatively un-amazing strip mall on 38th street (though, how many places in Indianapolis aren't located in a crappy strip mall?) next to the Little Caesars and hiding behind the Steak and Shake. You'd never know that inside of the unassuming Mexican restaurant front is some seriously great food and great service. A huge part of my Mexican restaurant experience is the chips and salsa served before the meal. Call me whatever you want, I love that stuff! The chips and salsa at El Maguey are the best I've had in town. I also keep ordering the huevos rancheros ($5 for the lunch plate... but it's enough food to feed 2!!) and it always makes me smile. Having previously lived in Southern California for many years I think Taqueria El maguey is as close to authentic Mexican food as you will find in Indianapolis. My friends and I were immediately served delicious warm chips and a fresh and flavorful homemade salsa. I chose the Texas chimichanga which had moist chicken, a perfectly crunchy shell and just the right amount of queso across the top. I chose beans vs spanish rice which were served hot and fresh. My friend had a chicken burrito that was too big for one person yet it was very flavorful as well. The staff are fast friendly and efficient yet most of the servers we've had speak limited English so be prepared to freshen up on your Spanish or use your finger to point out your lunch selection. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME HERE! The staff is awful. Seriously downright rude. As far as food goes, the salsa is pretty good, but it is spicy (which I typically enjoy but my husband was sad they don't have a mild version). The queso is ok, not very fresh and chunky like it sat out for a long time. The tacos look authentic but are VERY bland - they desperately need to season their meat much better. The menu is in Spanish with some parts in English underneath (the entire kids menu is in Spanish so we had to let our kids order off the adult menu) that they wouldn't translate for us. The wait staff also doesn't speak much English either so asking questions is difficult (they are also very slow and don't check on you much at all). Overall, I'd only recommend this place if you want some chips & salsa to go. They also have places listed on the door where you can download coupons but beware - they won't let you use any of them! Seriously good tacos, and I take my tacos very seriously. The taqueria is located in a strip mall, which the decor reflects. You really can't complain when the food is this cheap. I haven't tried too many items on the menu, I'm too busy working my way through the tacos. I've had the carnitas, pastor, and pollo varieties. All are delicious, but the carnitas are my favorite, very tender and nicely seasoned. The chips and salsa are always fresh, and I recall the queso as being very good, nice and spicy with a good consistency. My friend ordered a burrito once, which was comically large, but delicious. The employees speak English as a second language, so if you're ordering to go I suggest keeping it simple: don't ask for a bunch of modifications, and be patient. After hearing nothing but good things about this place I decided to check it out for lunch today. I ordered 2 Tacos Pastor, 1 Chicken Taco, 1 Beef Sope, 1 Chicken Sope and some Guacamole. The Guacamole was too creamy and soupy kind of like half melted soft serve ice cream that did not have much flavor. The Tacos Pastor was very flavorful but the made to order corn tortillas were some of the best I have ever had. The Chicken Taco was lacking flavor although they did not skimp on the chicken. The Sopes were amazing! At $3.50 they are one of the best deals in town. They would be a deal at twice the price. The homemade chips were excellent and the Salsa was super fresh and amazing.
