Ran across this place while driving thru Saticoy looking for MARS to recycle an old dishwasher. Its a little off the beaten path in a spanish speaking area, so it took the gringo in me a few weeks to muster up the courage to go in there. Boy am I glad I did! Walked into a small but very tidy and clean dining area with about 10 tables. It was midmorning on a weekend, so I was the only customer. The place smelled awesome as they were preparing fresh food for the day. The young man at the register promptly greeted me in slightly broken English but I had absolutely no problems understanding him. I was craving a breakfast burrito, so I ordered the egg and chorizo which included rice, beans and potatoes stuffed into it. Cost was $6.50 and with a huge cup of coffee came to $8.00 total. My to-go order included chips salsa and this huge burrito. The best part was eating this thing. It was just plain old delicious. The chorizo was not overpowering and all the ingredients were nicely mixed. It was so large that I'm saving the other half for lunch. The server gave me a handful of menus that I will be gladly handing out to my neighbors. Their lunch and dinner menu looks phenomenal. For the seventh installment of my 'Best Breakfast Burrito in Ventura' hunt I chose a place in the furthest outer banks of the city, deep east end in the Saticoy neighborhood. La Escondida sits nonchalantly in the middle of half industrial, half residential territory right off the main road. You definitely have to know it's there to be keen to its existence as it has hot "secret spot" potential. I stopped by in the middle of the afternoon on a Tuesday, generally the slow time of the day, the crew was hard at work cleaning the kitchen. I can never appreciate enough the joints that serve breakfast burritos all day, and I was stoked on the coming burreet I had from their kitchen because the bacon was going to be freshly cooked - they had to double check to make sure they were stocked. Fresh bacon is the best bacon! Also, they advertise handmade tortillas, which is always the bomb. The interior is equipped with the standard burrito joint decor, quaint and cozy. I caught the staff in the midst of cleaning but they were still friendly and happy to accommodate. I ordered up the bacon breakfast burrito and took a seat to wait. I was the only patron at the time so it was ready quick. The bacon burro will run you around $6.50, and comes with chips and salsa. Both red and green versions were roasted, per the flecks of char in the mix, and super good. They rocked a bit of a kick and I found the red to pair the best. The size of the burrito is ample and hearty. They include refried beans inside, maybe even a bit of rice, but I didn't necessarily detect any. The star of the show was definitely the hash browns, which is my personal favorite component of a solid breakfast burrito. Their flavor made the entire meal delicious, bite for bite; topped off by the handmade tortilla, wow! Great service, great value, off the main road location - it has all the makings of a secret spot, that's my spoiler alert. ;-) I'm looking forward to exploring their menu on return visits. To wrap up this food rant, using my 1 to 5 Scale Of Chingon, La Escondida's bacon breakfast burrito receives a high 5! This little restaurant is a bonafide neighborhood gem. The area is a nostalgic slice of old school industrial Ventura. Find them and enjoy them! That's my advice for when you find yourself hungry for burrito satisfaction when passing through Wells Road. read more

But i won't deny I am picky to where I eat out because I want it to be mouth watering goodness if I am going to pay for it. This place completely made an amazing dining experience for me It is a quaint small place. I think it is very homey. And the menu is to die for! Prices are super affordable and the food is authentic and delicious I had the super huarache which is a handmade long tortilla that is cooked topped with homemade refried beans, potatoes, bell peppers, onion, tomato, lettuce, avocado, fresh cheese, and a bit of sour cream on top Completely authentic, savory, and delicious! Also I'm vegetarian. I am first generation here in the states and I have grown up with traditional mexican food made from scratch. I tend to not be able to go out because mexican restaurants can't serve me good authentic mexican because of my vegetarianism. For health reasons I had to give up meat and it is great that I can eat my favorite dishes here without sacrificing flavor! Definitely coming back! read more

I have always loved the food here. It is good authentic Mexican food but I will never eat here again! I recently ordered some food to go and I found a COCKROACH in my food!!!! It was disgusting. I am glad I didn't eat it. I ate some of the food and luckily found the cockroach before it was too late! Be careful when eating here! They need to be more sanitary. I called them to let them know and they just offered to give me more food. I took a picture of the cockroach but now I can't find it. I'm very disappointed that I can't have this food anymore! It looks like the enchilada sauce is home made and tastes great. The mulita was huge and the flavors were perfect. The breakfast burrito was delicious, I could only eat half it was so big. WOW !!!!!!!! My wife and I went to La Escondida last Sunday for breakfast and were not disappointed we had the chorizo and eggs and it was delicious . We went back tonight to try there dinners and they also were delicious my wife had the chili relleno dinner I had the chicken taco dinner what great flavor the rice and beans are the best and you can tell it's all made on site so very fresh. The service is great and the restaurant is very very clean we will be back . The prices are very reasonable do yourself a favor and give La Escodida a try you'll be glad you did.
