If you eat at just one place while you are in Gilmer make sure it is here. In Texas there are as many Mexican restaurants as there are churches. La Finca stands above most if not all. This was not our original destination but after watching the weird mess unfold at another restaurant we where told to come here. Almost every local recommended this place first or second and they were right. The parking lot was packed which is usually a good sign on a Saturday night. We opted to eat at the bar rather than wait the half hour as we were tired and hungry. Greeted by a wonderful bartender among other titles she was quick, direct, and honest which is very hard to come by. I had a margarita on the rocks with salt and it was perfect! Too often places just can't make simple drinks or they over complicate them. Now while taking our order and making drinks she's also doing her own dishes which is unusual for a busy night. However she not only rose to the occasion she exceeded my expectations as she never lagged behind. She had talked me out of my normal safe dish and recommended one that a lot of people enjoy. Well it was the right call all the way! As things progress I noticed a woman enter who you could tell was the owner. There were no complaints, no asking for help, no nothing. This woman went straight to work asking her employee what she needed and she was on top of it. Be it making drinks, dishes, restocks, or whatever she helped as any true leader should do. There is a very big difference between being a leader and a boss and tonight two different people in one place showed their leadership skills and they were phenomenal. I will definitely be returning here the next time we are out this way. read more

La Finca has become my go to for Mexican food in East Texas. The new facility is really nice and parking is adequate with overflow across the street. The bar is nice enough, though some craft beer selections and maybe a specialty cocktail or two might enhance the experience. Service is attentive but not intrusive. As to the food, I love the salsa and the paper thin tortilla chips. The queso is the best around and I love the queso chip that comes with several of the entrees. Love the rice - I think it has celery in it and the charro beans (we call it bean soup) are fabulous! They have great beef enchiladas smothered in really good chili and the tacos would be extremely good, BUT FOR THE SALAD IN A SACK LETTUCE. Please, don't ruin your excellent food with that preservative lettuce taste. Grab a head of iceberg and chop it fresh. Lost a star for the yucky lettuce. read more

This place is the very definition of "East Texas Tex Mex"! The atmosphere of their old location was a little bit "hole in the wall" but their new location (right in front of the old place) is really nice! Their delicious salsa is a huge selling point as well. Love how crunchy their chips are, kind of a unique flavor.. I wonder if they make them in house? Their service is fairly fast and efficient, they have a full bar and i cannot say enough about their queso flameado! That stuff is a heart attack in a skillet! This is no La Casona! Goofy and immature wait staff and bus boys. Bus boys keep their blue gloves on as they bus tables and then pull the dish rag out of their apron to wipe down the tables. Dish rags are filthy. Never saw any type of cleanser used on the tables. We were seated very quickly and then that is where it stopped. Waited 10 min to place a drink order. As we waited, a nice woman came with a broom to sweep up the floor right around our table. After about 30 minutes, the steak fajitas came. We ordered flour tortillas but got corn. The flour tortillas finally came after the steak was cold. We asked for more chips and salsa twice. Those came before the flour tortillas! The place was hot and had flies buzzing around our food. Our waitress apologized when I mentioned that we still didn't have our tortillas and now the steak was cold. She said they were short staffed but there was tons of staff running around. Dammit! Nice seating and tables. That was about the highlight. The food was mediocre. The menu is very expensive, meals ranging$12-18+. The cook time was excruciatingly long. To the point where we were ready to leave without the meal. The poor waitress had to apologize multiple times and continued to check on our meal with no results. Frustrating watching tables that arrived after you enjoying their meals while you continue to wait. After the meal arrived the food was plain and not impressive. Frankly the food is better at Tele's, at 2/3rd's the price. The whole family was disappointed. Funny, the best tasting food was the Texas Toast that came with my 5 year olds kids meal. read more

When I first walked in, there was loads of people waiting for a table! This place must be people popular.... WRONG!! It's completely dry. When we finally got our table, the salsa tasted awful..!! It tasted like canned tomatoes, and trust me as a mom who loves to cook in the kitchen... I KNOW...!!! 20 minutes later our orders were finally taken !! Please keep in mind that I ordered a simple 10 minute making shrimp quesadilla... AND IT TOOK 20 MORE MINUTES FOR IT TO GET TO MY TABLE. When I got my shrimp quesadilla, oil was spilling from the tortilla... talk about diabetes ?? And when I opened the quesadilla...the shrimp were nonexistent ... and as a thick latina, the quesadilla had no flavor....the rice and beans were very decent, but again DECENT. Stopped here for lunch. Authentic Mexican food. Understand this review comes from a Tex-Mex lover. The red sauce isn't spicy but has good tomato flavor. The green sauce is jalapeño hot. The chips are medium thick and fresh. I ordered a mini taco salad with ground beef. It was far from "mini". I was able to eat a fourth of it. My husband ordered a fajita steak chimichanga with queso. The meat is sliced more like a roast than the meat I prefer. Basically nothing was spicy but for Authentic Mexican food it has good flavor (usually taste flavorless to me). Service was great. Many commented on the expense of this place but I found it comparable. read more

More than neglectful, it's hard to not feel racially profiled while all the surrounding tables with caucasians getting their food and chips and attention and we've been sitting here for about an hour, no food waiting on chips/salsa/drink. Waitress was very sweet but spread too thin. CROSS TRAIN IF YOURE UNDERSTAFFED. Your employees can do more than one job. It would help with bad service and reviews. Not very good. They start you out with chips and salsa which the chips are bland and the salsa just watery spice. The waitress or bartender forgot to bring one of my family members drink after we told them we were missing it. Got the veggie fajitas to split with someone and it was very bland. The lady who served us our food was all over the place and gave attitude when we told her we were missing things. Foods over priced for mostly blandness. One of my family members got the chili riano and said it was pretty good so there's a plus. read more

The restaurant itself is beautiful especially since the new remodel...that being said. ..it echos extremely bad...add some screaming kids and you literally want to run out of their! First u get salsa and chips..eh..scale 1-10 I give them a 3..chips are so thin they break when touching .salsa is way too chunky for my liking.. most items on the menu are $9 and up.. the plates are nice but the food is extremely salty and greasy. .I literally had grease running around my enchiladas. .aside from that all the food taste the same..no flavors stood out...so I give this place a 5..I don't get why so many people in Gilmer eat there...I suppose it's all they have. read more

I truly hate to give this place a 1 star review but after last night, it is needed.those never came. I grew up going to La Finca with my school's band/choir and had nothing but good memories but last night changed that entirely. We drove a good 20 minutes JUST to show my girls' one of our childhood memories. We waited about 30 minutes when we got there to be seated which wasn't a problem. Once seated drinks and stuff came in a timely manner but that's where the good service stops. We had to ask for refills, our waiter was much too busy being silly with co-workers(we watched him when they cleaned up a table beside us and our drinks were half empty). We also had to ask him to check on our food after waiting on it for an hour. He brought it out and tried to sell it as hot, stated 'they just put the last plate on' and grabbed a plate with a pot holder. Let me tell you, NOTHING on our 4 plates was warm for that matter. The cheese had already started to get hard, not stringy when hot, you didn't have to wait to eat anything, all was luke-warm at best. I paid 8.99 for a meal the size of a 4.99 children's plate. My brother was so mad when the food came he asked for our check so he could make sure we got out as soon as possible. We also asked for to-go drinks and I know you are probably thinking why not talk to the manager?! Well when he walks by you multiple times and through the whole restaurant and never asks how is everything or the service to any of HIS PAYING CUSTOMERS, something just tells you to not even bother. I've been eating at La Finca since it opened in the late 80's. The food has always been good. The queso is some of the best you can get anywhere. The beef fajitas, Mexican shrimp cocktail and Camarones Tres Quesos (shrimp with three cheeses) are just some of my favorites. The La Finca Rita is delicious too! This restaurant is really pretty. I ordered mixed lunch fajitas the steak and onions was pretty good but the chicken was extremely dry and not much taste. But the great Margarita made up the difference and the service was great. Dismal dirty disorganized. Highly inflated prices most dishes 16.00 - 17.00 for normal everyday mexican fare. All food was served cold tried 2 or three bites hit frozen cold (not cooled) center waved over manager (or owner) who gladly took my dish 5 minutes later a busboy returned my half eaten burrito with the salsa I had spooned on it bubbling and candied from the microwave. Maybe at $4.95 but not at these prices. Biggest point this place is beyond filthy I belief my hands were cleaner before I went in their bathroom and washed them. Tables sticky floor strewn with chips the tile floor did not get that nasty in one shift.
