We made dinner reservations here based on the rave reviews, which I recommend as the inside is pretty small. We were seated in the back patio and it was a beautiful setting. We started off with the chips and salsas, but were very underwhelmed by the guacamole, which lacked any salt and acid. The Tex mex deluxe was a hefty portion if you want a little bit of everything, but it didn't stand out. The suizas enchiladas could've used more tomatillo cream sauce for flavor and the chicken was really dry. On the plus side, the drinks were great.

This might be my favorite Mexican food I have ever had. The outside and the inside of the restaurant are so incredible to look at. We ordered all the salsas to try and loved every single one, I especially loved the avocado salsa and could honestly add that to everything. I got a beef chalupa and it was insanely good, all the toppings tasted fresh and the sauces are clearly made in house. I will return over and over again.
I've been in San Antonio for 21 years and I still view La Fonda as the best Mexican restaurant in the city. From the ambiance, to the AMAZING food, to the perfectly made margaritas, to the knowledgeable wait staff. I enjoy everything about La Fonda. I highly encourage you to make a reservation, unless you are like me and like to visit as a party of one. I always leave feeling like I made a great choice by visiting La Fonda. If you haven't been, use this as your cue to make a reservation and enjoy a wonderful meal on their patio. *side note: they do have indoor dining, but I love the patio and highly recommend it
We came during Fiesta and honestly didn't think we were going to get a table, but they were able to seat us inside. We would have loved the courtyard because it looked beautiful, but you could tell they were busy, so we were just happy to be seated. We ended up ordering off what felt like a chef's special for the night, scallops with pork belly and risotto, and that dish alone made the whole experience. It was beyond amazing, so flavorful and just done right. We also ordered the steak and shrimp fajitas, which were overall really good. We started with chips and salsa. The salsa was solid, the chips tasted like they were from a bag, which wasn't my favorite, but it is what it is. Our server Jason was great. Very attentive, quick, and kept us updated on everything. Food came out fast, which we appreciated especially with how busy it was. We ordered mocktails, I had a mojito and it was refreshing and really good. My partner ordered the mango one and it leaned a little too syrupy, not bad, just not something we would order again. The ambiance is really pretty, definitely a place you can enjoy the atmosphere as much as the food. Overall, we had a great experience. Good service, good food, and I would definitely recommend it.
Food was good and what an amazing building they have! Colorful, flavorful, beautiful- all the fuls! Server was very nice and communicative! My only thumbs down would be that I had to ask for water and salsa refills. Other than that great experience and would recommend this unique top rated spot!

This is a San Antonio staple... And yes we adventured away from downtown. It was well worth it. Slammed, but the customer service was good. Food, again pictures!
I lived within minutes of La Fonda on Main for most of my life, yet this was my first visit. A friend and I planned a pre-show dinner. From a prior attempt, we knew we would need to make a reservation for the best chance of minimizing our wait time. Once you make the reservation on OpenTable, plan to show up on time and with your entire party. They only give you a 10 minute grace period and do not seat incomplete parties. Our reservation was for 6pm, and we were seated within 5-10 minutes. The waitstaff took our order after a few minutes. We ordered chips and salsa and drinks. The chips had a great texture - firm and lightly crispy. The salsa was a chunky fresh sauce that was mostly tomato. My friend and I wish it would have been roasted or have more than the tomato flavor. My friend liked her cocktail, and I tried the Mango No Tango mocktail. My drink was okay. I think I expected a mango based drink to be sweeter, and tasting the drink with the Tajin on the glass helped a little. My dish, the lobster and shrimp enchiladas, looked delicious. As I began to eat, I realized I may have made a huge mistake because the meal had incredible spicy heat. While I'm used to jalapeños in pico de gallo, this heat was different. I learned that they use serrano peppers in their pico, and the restaurant's recent peppers were more potent. When I was asked whether I liked my meal, I was quite honest that I struggled to eat it for 30 minutes. Immediately, they knew what needed to be removed to make it significantly less peppery. Within ten minutes, I had a fresh plate of enchiladas free of serrano filled pico and spicy sauce. At that point, both my lobster and shrimp enchiladas were delicious. I just wish I would have had more than 10 minutes to enjoy it since I needed to run to my next engagement. I did give an extra star for taking the time to quickly remake my dish in a way that would allow me to consume it, yet watch out with the tip (extra star removed). I can't see the percentage on the receipt, yet I remember options for 15-20%. The receipt is showing that I gave a tip of over 30%. I'm not sure what happened there or how they calculated it. I'll get clarification from the restaurant within the next day or two. Yes, our dinner was nice, yet I'm not entirely sure it was worth the experience. My friend and I also noticed that there were only a few fellow Hispanics in the restaurant. If a friend invited me, I would join them, yet this won't be a place where I bring my family. They tend to love Tex-Mex food versus the more upscale Mexican dishes served here.
We had the best lunch at La Fonda on Main! I took my mom to celebrate her birthday, and we ordered bloody Mary's, had the green enchiladas, the waffle plate of the day, and ended with the fabulous lime dessert. Everything was so delicious!! We both loved the meal so much that we cleaned our plates, which doesn't happen often. Our waiter was wonderful, and the atmosphere was comfortable indoors out of the summer heat on a Saturday afternoon.

Delicious! I ordered the Alambre Mixto and the pork belly on this dish was divine. Everything was plated nicely, service was excellent, and this place lived up to the hype. The restaurant looks like an adobe house and is decorated nicely inside with classic Mexican tile floors and substantial tables and chairs.
Perfect spot for a ladies' luncheon/white elephant party! This restaurant had multiple rooms with large windows and patio dining. They have a small parking lot located across the street...it can fill up fast! Reservations were made ahead of time for a party of 10. Automatic gratuity was applied to the one check at the end. The menu offered some great dishes and drinks. I inquired about chips for the table, our server stated "Of course with dips. " Sadly, they do not offer complimentary chips/salsa like most places do. The chips and dips added another $34 to our bill. I have to say, our server was excellent in taking our order, getting our food/drinks out in a timely manner, and checking up on us. I ordered a pineapple/passionfruit margarita- excellent! smooth and perfectly blended. Pollo Milanesa- one of their specialties. Delicious breaded chicken cutlet with a side of poblano sauce- the sauce needed a kick. The side salad was delicious- greens, beets, candied pecans, and a vinaigrette. The papas bravas were crispy on the outside and thick cut. A little dry, I poured the poblano sauce and salsa over them. We were not a fan of one table bill..very old school. Most restaurants have a hand held pay device where each person can pay for their individual meal and swipe with card. It was very hard to divide the bill amongst the 10 of us. Overall, most enjoyed their drinks and food. Beautiful space.
This is a San Antonio staple. It has been here for many decades, but I do think that lately their prices and food don't match. I ordered a Poblano with Queso, which was a stuffed Poblano pepper. It came with rice and a cheese enchilada. The poblano was good, I wasn't crazy about the enchilada. The sauce had no flavor and it needed more filling. Also, prices for some of their meals were too high. This poblano pepper was $17 and it didn't include any meat. Plus, it was not an extremely large portion. So food is good; prices are not. The service was satisfactory. Our server was friendly and helpful. And, of course, the place is beautiful with gorgeous decorations and a very upscale feel. I have been coming here for years, but lately there's more reasoning the cost vs the food portions.

A group of us came in on a weeknight for a business dinner. The staff was friendly, the place is beautiful and nicely decorated, and the menu is quite appealing. We sat on the back patio for dinner on a day when it was 100 degrees out and there were fans all over to help keep the air flowing, which helped immensely. They have some interesting cocktails, such as their jalapeño cucumber margarita which is made with ghost pepper infused tequila. Their salsa tray is nice too, they have 4 to select from and you get three in this appetizer, but we ordered the 4th as well and all were pretty nicely done. The verde was amazing and the roasted tomato was great, just not spicy at all. I tried their combo fajitas and was thankful they came out being simply plated, rather than on the blazing hot, sizzling skillet - I don't need the show, just the good eats. The meats were decent, the beans were amazing. The tortillas were just ok, as I felt like they were way too thick. They offered corn tortillas too, but I'm in Texas, so you get flour, not corn. Save room for dessert, they have amazing churros! Overall, this was a decent visit. Service was nice too. I'd recommend stopping in. read more

This is my 3rd visit to La Fonda as we come here when visiting our daughter and it's a favorite! We always make reservations and like to sit on the patio (something you can't do in Colorado on a late October evening). We were seated and the sever introduced herself right away. She was friendly and the service was good given how busy they were. We ordered drinks and a couple of appetizers. I enjoy their Top Shelf margaritas as they are refreshing and perfectly balanced. For appetizers we get the chips and salsa trio and the empanadas which are a celebration on a plate. Beautiful and delicious! The N/A drink my DIL ordered came before the appetizers. I didn't get my margarita until well into the appetizers but I did get an apology. I ordered some me of the specials. Beef filled with cheese, peppers, and onions on top of polenta. The dish was amazing except the polenta was really dry. Since it was a birthday celebration we ordered churros for dessert. They were warm but not hot and the flavor was great. We will be back next time we visit for the food the ambiance and the service! read more
Absolutely my favorite place to take my friends and family who are visiting San Antonio for some amazing fellowship while enjoying the delicious entrees. The dessert options and the extensive beverage menu makes this the perfect spot for any function. For how crowded it was, it wasn't as loud as I expected it to be. Getting there at the evening when the outdoor lights are on creates an atmosphere of warmth and excitement. Every person was super nice from the greater to well, every employee we crossed paths with. Definitely a place we look forward to going to every time we go. read more

Came here with colleagues. Service was really amazing-our waiter heard us say we had to make an event and assured us he would get the orders in. He also made sure we could get happy hour apps before time ran out! Wei had the chile relleno with what seemed to be Picadillo inside- beef, raisins, pecans. I really liked it! The ambiance of this place is incredible. Old San Antonio charm. The service is phenomenal nothing less. The food was good they have a great happy hour. But if you stop and look around majority is white people dining lol not hating just stating the obvious. Not truly great authentic Mexican food. The drinks ooof be ready, can easily turn into an after party lol. Possibly best drinks I've had in a while at a restaurant! Definitely will return. read more

We went to La Fonda on Main on a whim after realizing we still had a gift card from the year before, and we're so glad we finally used it. We made a reservation for a late Saturday dinner and sat outside to enjoy the nice weather and Christmas lights. Our waitress was wonderful and very attentive, and the food was delicious! The mix of seafood and Mexican flavors was perfect. My husband loved the lobster enchiladas, and my shrimp plate had a nice kick of spice while still being full of flavor. The margaritas and dessert were also great. We can't wait to come back and enjoy it again with friends! read more
Came here for a pre-Shakira b-day dinner for my fabulous friend Jen. The space was so beautiful! We were in the back room that you walk through the courtyard to get to, in a big round table that was perfect for our group. The drinks were interesting and tasty, the empanada was ridiculously good, and the queso was solid. I ordered a shrimp dish over rice that had some sort of butter and seasoning in it, when I tell you I couldn't stop eating it even though I was wearing a tight dress and knew I was about to be shaking my ass off at the show. There were multiple people attending to the table, some less experienced than others, but we were able to get whatever we needed and everyone was very kind and attentive. We went here for a group party, the service was great! They offer several areas for seating, two inside spaces and one large, outdoor area. The food was good, I'm a bit picky on meat and I didn't really care for the flavor of the meat in my tacos, but the La Fonda salad was delicious! If you like beets, I highly recommend! La fonda is a local favorite and for good reason! The servers are always so attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. We have been many times for brunch and dinner- our favorite brunch items include the cafe de olla, chilaquiles and Brunch Arrachera. Their margaritas are great and the chicken enchilada is my fav for dinner! I recommend sitting on the patio when the weather is nice! It's so cute! read more
We went here after my girlfriend and mine engagement to celebrate with our families! La Fonda was great and very accommodating! It's a really beautiful restaurant. Quite large, with several dining rooms and an amazing courtyard for outdoor dining. Food, cocktails and service were top notch. Prices are more than fair. This is our go-to restaurant for each trip to San Antonio. I wouldn't say it's particularly innovative. But it's some darn good TexMex. My refried black beans were a little on the dry side, but outside of that one detail, we were all very pleased with our meals! read more

Ate at this restaurant twice during the visit to San Antonio. On the first visit, the pescado - fish tacos were made of lightly breaded red fish. It was excellent. The chicken mole was really good as well. Got the Blueberry mezcal margarita on their specials and requested chilli and salt on rim. The margaritas were good and gave a good buzz. Ordered the vanilla bean flan to share. It was good and more than enough. We ate outside in their courtyard patio. It was very nice. On the second visit, tried two different enchiladas- camote and suiza, prickly pear aka cactus margaritas and mojito. Camote was interesting with sweet potato but the shell was crispy with soft sweet potato inside and camote on side and other stuff going on. It's interesting in taste profile but not a repeat. The suizas was fine. The drinks were great, service was attentive. Our server switched out a fan with 1 wing - didn't think he'd notice it. Appreciated that and marveled at the blue standing fans. Sat at another spot in the courtyard and it was just as lovely an afternoon to enjoy the colorful margaritas and mojitos. Ordered a mango merengue dessert from the specials but they didn't have it. Our server comped us a Mexican key lime pie which was delicious. The food was great, service was friendly and attentive. The ambiance in the courtyard was cozy and accentuated the great weather. Love the shade created by the large oak tree. read more

Our Uber driver tried to warn us that this wasn't the best restaurant to try while in San Antonio, but we had reservations and didn't want to back out on them. Big mistake! While I can say they have a nice setting and the pozole was good, the service was lacking! Our server was super sweet, but she had her hands full with two parties that had several children. It was her support staff and management that fell short. We paid for chips that came with a refill, requested them, and never got them. Then we requested that our drinks be served with our food, and they were not. My drink came with a gnat in the lemon AND they came when I was on the last two spoons of my soup and my husband was bites away from the end of his meal. We told our server when she came over and requested that they remove the drinks off of our ticket. Her manager decided they were only taking off the drink that had a gnat in it, and gave me a plate to cover the drink. That wasn't even the chief complaint. We were outside and that can happen, so I asked for a new lemon, but my server was kind enough to bring me a new drink. What we wanted was that drinks be served with our meal. That was a pretty small request, but one that was too big for them to handle. Unfortunately, this is not an establishment I can recommend. Try the Panadería downtown across from Walgreen, the food trucks at El Camino, or Mi Tierra, if you want a classic dining spot. read more
