The Huitlacoche Empanadas were another standout, with crisp blue corn shells surrounding a creamy, comforting filling that was both earthy and slightly sweet. For the main course, the Tex-Mex Deluxe was everything you hope for: a mouthwatering pork tamal, two perfectly cheesy enchiladas, and tender, flavorful beef fajitas. We also ordered the Tacos de la Casa, and the fish was incredibly fresh, moist, and seasoned beautifully. Every plate felt like it had been made with care. We spent the evening sipping what may be the best sangria in San Antonio, along with fresh, perfectly balanced margaritas that paired wonderfully with every course. We came during Fiesta and honestly didn't think we were going to get a table, but they were able to seat us inside. My partner ordered the mango one and it leaned a little too syrupy, not bad, just not something we would order again. I lived within minutes of La Fonda on Main for most of my life, yet this was my first visit. A friend and I planned a pre-show dinner. From a prior attempt, we knew we would need to make a reservation for the best chance of minimizing our wait time. Once you make the reservation on OpenTable, plan to show up on time and with your entire party. They only give you a 10 minute grace period and do not seat incomplete parties. Our reservation was for 6pm, and we were seated within 5-10 minutes. The waitstaff took our order after a few minutes. We ordered chips and salsa and drinks. The chips had a great texture - firm and lightly crispy. The salsa was a chunky fresh sauce that was mostly tomato. My friend and I wish it would have been roasted or have more than the tomato flavor. My friend liked her cocktail, and I tried the Mango No Tango mocktail. My drink was okay. I think I expected a mango based drink to be sweeter, and tasting the drink with the Tajin on the glass helped a little. My dish, the lobster and shrimp enchiladas, looked delicious. As I began to eat, I realized I may have made a huge mistake because the meal had incredible spicy heat. While I'm used to jalapeños in pico de gallo, this heat was different. I learned that they use serrano peppers in their pico, and the restaurant's recent peppers were more potent. When I was asked whether I liked my meal, I was quite honest that I struggled to eat it for 30 minutes. Immediately, they knew what needed to be removed to make it significantly less peppery. Within ten minutes, I had a fresh plate of enchiladas free of serrano filled pico and spicy sauce. At that point, both my lobster and shrimp enchiladas were delicious. I just wish I would have had more than 10 minutes to enjoy it since I needed to run to my next engagement. I did give an extra star for taking the time to quickly remake my dish in a way that would allow me to consume it, yet watch out with the tip (extra star removed). I can't see the percentage on the receipt, yet I remember options for 15-20%. The receipt is showing that I gave a tip of over 30%. I'm not sure what happened there or how they calculated it. I'll get clarification from the restaurant within the next day or two. Yes, our dinner was nice, yet I'm not entirely sure it was worth the experience. My friend and I also noticed that there were only a few fellow Hispanics in the restaurant. If a friend invited me, I would join them, yet this won't be a place where I bring my family. Perfect spot for a ladies' luncheon/white elephant party! This restaurant had multiple rooms with large windows and patio dining. They have a small parking lot located across the street...it can fill up fast! Reservations were made ahead of time for a party of 10. Automatic gratuity was applied to the one check at the end. The menu offered some great dishes and drinks. I inquired about chips for the table, our server stated "Of course with dips. " Sadly, they do not offer complimentary chips/salsa like most places do. The chips and dips added another $34 to our bill. I have to say, our server was excellent in taking our order, getting our food/drinks out in a timely manner, and checking up on us. I ordered a pineapple/passionfruit margarita- excellent! smooth and perfectly blended. Pollo Milanesa- one of their specialties. Delicious breaded chicken cutlet with a side of poblano sauce- the sauce needed a kick. The side salad was delicious- greens, beets, candied pecans, and a vinaigrette. The papas bravas were crispy on the outside and thick cut. A little dry, I poured the poblano sauce and salsa over them. We were not a fan of one table bill..very old school. Most restaurants have a hand held pay device where each person can pay for their individual meal and swipe with card. It was very hard to divide the bill amongst the 10 of us. This is a San Antonio staple. It has been here for many decades, but I do think that lately their prices and food don't match. I ordered a Poblano with Queso, which was a stuffed Poblano pepper. It came with rice and a cheese enchilada. The poblano was good, I wasn't crazy about the enchilada. The sauce had no flavor and it needed more filling. Also, prices for some of their meals were too high. This poblano pepper was $17 and it didn't include any meat. Plus, it was not an extremely large portion. So food is good; prices are not. The service was satisfactory. Our server was friendly and helpful. And, of course, the place is beautiful with gorgeous decorations and a very upscale feel. This is my 3rd visit to La Fonda as we come here when visiting our daughter and it's a favorite! We always make reservations and like to sit on the patio (something you can't do in Colorado on a late October evening). We were seated and the sever introduced herself right away. She was friendly and the service was good given how busy they were. We ordered drinks and a couple of appetizers. I enjoy their Top Shelf margaritas as they are refreshing and perfectly balanced. For appetizers we get the chips and salsa trio and the empanadas which are a celebration on a plate. Beautiful and delicious! The N/A drink my DIL ordered came before the appetizers. I didn't get my margarita until well into the appetizers but I did get an apology. I ordered some me of the specials. Beef filled with cheese, peppers, and onions on top of polenta. The dish was amazing except the polenta was really dry. Since it was a birthday celebration we ordered churros for dessert. They were warm but not hot and the flavor was great. La Fonda on Main is the kind of place you want to love before you ever arrive. Quaint, charming, tucked into San Antonio with the promise of history and patio magic--it feels like a restaurant built for anticipation. I had studied the photos. My date had studied the photos. We were prepared to fall in love with color, spice, texture, and the kind of Tex-Mex that makes you lean back in your chair and reconsider your life choices. Unfortunately, it was raining. No patio. Bias entered immediately, dripping wet and mildly resentful. Still, rain can't ruin good food, and great food laughs at weather. We checked in for our reservation and then waited. And waited. About 30 minutes, to be exact--long enough to reconsider hunger as a concept rather than a feeling. Once seated, the dining room felt crowded in that way where conversation becomes competitive and elbows negotiate treaties. The service landed squarely in the land of "meh." Not rude. Not warm. Just present enough to confirm we were still alive and seated. Then came more waiting. Hunger turned into fatigue, which is never where you want to be before enchiladas arrive. When the food finally came, it was... fine. Mediocre, even. And that may be the most damning thing one can say about Mexican or Tex-Mex cuisine. This was not Tex-Mex in any meaningful sense--no boldness, no spice, no joy. The flavors were muted, timid, as if afraid of offending someone. The rice, rather than supporting the dish, seemed to absorb it--like culinary beige spreading quietly across the plate. How does one make enchiladas disappointing? I didn't think it was possible. And yet, here we were, staring at them, tired rather than delighted. I am an easy person to amuse with food. My date is, too. Give us heat, give us balance, give us something that feels intentional. Instead, the dishes felt cautious and bland, more obligation than celebration. This is what made the evening sad rather than simply bad: I wanted La Fonda to be wonderful. I expected it to be. The setting promised something soulful, rooted, alive. What arrived was food that felt disconnected from its own story. La Fonda on Main isn't terrible. But it is disappointing, which is worse. When a restaurant has history, charm, and reputation on its side, mediocrity feels louder. We left full enough--but uninspired, underwhelmed, and oddly exhausted. Sometimes a meal feeds you. We went to La Fonda on Main on a whim after realizing we still had a gift card from the year before, and we're so glad we finally used it. We made a reservation for a late Saturday dinner and sat outside to enjoy the nice weather and Christmas lights. Our waitress was wonderful and very attentive, and the food was delicious! The mix of seafood and Mexican flavors was perfect. My husband loved the lobster enchiladas, and my shrimp plate had a nice kick of spice while still being full of flavor. Came here for a pre-Shakira b-day dinner for my fabulous friend Jen. The space was so beautiful! We were in the back room that you walk through the courtyard to get to, in a big round table that was perfect for our group. The drinks were interesting and tasty, the empanada was ridiculously good, and the queso was solid. I ordered a shrimp dish over rice that had some sort of butter and seasoning in it, when I tell you I couldn't stop eating it even though I was wearing a tight dress and knew I was about to be shaking my ass off at the show. It's a really beautiful restaurant. Quite large, with several dining rooms and an amazing courtyard for outdoor dining. Food, cocktails and service were top notch. Prices are more than fair. This is our go-to restaurant for each trip to San Antonio. I wouldn't say it's particularly innovative. But it's some darn good TexMex. Our Uber driver tried to warn us that this wasn't the best restaurant to try while in San Antonio, but we had reservations and didn't want to back out on them. Big mistake! While I can say they have a nice setting and the pozole was good, the service was lacking! Our server was super sweet, but she had her hands full with two parties that had several children. It was her support staff and management that fell short. We paid for chips that came with a refill, requested them, and never got them. Then we requested that our drinks be served with our food, and they were not. My drink came with a gnat in the lemon AND they came when I was on the last two spoons of my soup and my husband was bites away from the end of his meal. We told our server when she came over and requested that they remove the drinks off of our ticket. Her manager decided they were only taking off the drink that had a gnat in it, and gave me a plate to cover the drink. That wasn't even the chief complaint. We were outside and that can happen, so I asked for a new lemon, but my server was kind enough to bring me a new drink. What we wanted was that drinks be served with our meal. That was a pretty small request, but one that was too big for them to handle. Unfortunately, this is not an establishment I can recommend. Try the Panadería downtown across from Walgreen, the food trucks at El Camino, or Mi Tierra, if you want a classic dining spot. read more

Eight decent-sized flat nachos (thank you!) that did not skimp on the shrimp, topped with a white cheese, subtle hints of jalapeño that bit you in the end in a good way. The husband had the pork chop special. A large chuleta oak-grilled on a bed of polenta. The brown sauce was so good. He also had a cup of the red pozole which he said was great. I had enchiladas verdes. My complaint about this restaurant is that they may nickle and dime you. Don't get get me wrong - the food is outstanding in flavor and presentation. But... An order of chips and salsa that is free most other places is $3. There is also a charge for hot sauce. It wasn't much, but a charge nonetheless. And they don't take American Express. I had a very nice experience here. It feels like you're in an Hacienda or one of the Mexican "magical towns" - kind of like Santiago outside of MTY. Love the fact that it's the oldest Tex Mex spot in SATX. The whole restaurant is beautiful - inside and out. The service was fantastic - very attentive. We walked through the restaurant to the back room, which was large, airy, and most importantly, air conditioned. The cocktails were delicious and I highly recommend whatever their specialty is for the night. When I went, it was a ginger margarita, and it was spicy and refreshing - and strong. I didn't imbibe a second time, so I did not try any others, but everyone loved their drinks. They also have a great Mocktail list. For dinner, I am a sucker for paella, so I jumped at the chance. It's not as saffron-heavy as a Spanish place, but it was pretty good. The portions are pretty small and there wasn't a ton of seafood in mine, but the girl next to me had the same order and she had a bit more than I did. Maybe just luck of the draw. Overall it was a nice place and we had two servers taking care of our table of 9. They were pretty prompt and paid attention to when we needed more water or when we needed another fork, cocktail, or whatever else.
