The stuffed chilaquiles are something I haven't seen before in San Antonio, and even with all the options for Mexican restaurants here, this one stands out. The interior is cutely decorated and fairly small so I recommend making reservations even for non peak times. The salsas they have are delicious and everything was enjoyed by our group. It was pretty but .. Very bland, very heavy, the enchilada sauce was more like heavy cream flavored with seasoned tomato sauce and the chicken tasted a bit gamey to us. The rice was good but if you're expecting a Spanish style rice this was not like that it's more of a seasoned rice but doesn't have traditional Mexican rice flavor that I'm used to. Tacos De Birria - you will be disappointed if you're expecting the normal hype of birria tacos. I had high hopes for this restaurant after seeing so many videos about it on social media. First of all, they don't have any kind of waiting system; no pagers, no Yelp waitlist, nothing. Just a simple notebook. We were told the wait would be about an hour on a Sunday around 1:30 p.m., so my partner and I went to La Panadería to grab a little snack while we waited. We got back to Maiz at 2:00 p.m. and were told they had already called our name! We just looked at the hostess like... uhh? There are only two of us, and you told us it would be at least an hour before we'd be seated. Where exactly were we supposed to wait? The parking spots in front of Maiz were full, so we had to park a little farther away. How were we supposed to hear our name being called? There wasn't even anywhere inside to sit while waiting. On top of that, there was a huge group of people blocking the entrance, making it difficult to even get in. There were maybe five chairs outside, but come on... it was 97 degrees in Texas with no umbrellas. You really expect people to stand around in that heat? One of the hostess's jobs is to be attentive and seat guests appropriately. My partner is a petite woman and was wearing a sundress, and they had the audacity to sit us at a high-top table. She was extremely uncomfortable the whole time because her legs/feet would fall asleep (she couldn't reach the foot bar). Rightfully so, she was self conscious of not flashing anyone sitting at the other tables! We couldn't even see what tables were available when we walked in because the entrance was so crowded hence why we did not request a non-high top table. What an uncomfortable experience! Anyway, we sat down and waited 15 minutes before the hostess walked by and asked if our server had come by yet. We said no. About three minutes later, our server finally came over and took our order. I ordered the carne en su jugo, and my girlfriend ordered the enchiladas verdes. My carne en su jugo was one of the blandest things I've ever eaten. It's honestly a disgrace to call it carne en su jugo. My dad was born and raised in Guadalajara, and I visited often growing up, so I know what it's supposed to taste like. This tasted like it was made without a single grain of salt. No depth of flavor, and not even the bacon had any flavor. Even the two little tortillas were dry and bland. We also had to keep waving servers down anytime we needed something, which got annoying really fast. Yet they still have the audacity to suggest a minimum 15% tip. Never coming here again. Save yourself the time and money and go to TLAHCO Mexican Kitchen instead. They have a Yelp waitlist, the staff is friendly, and it's a much cozier spot. I've eaten a lot of mole in my life and I've never had it like this. If this is the way they make their mole, I won't order it if and when I give them another try. Taquitos con guacamole - They were good, but not for 6 mini taquitos at $14. Birria Tacos with cheese - The beef was decent, but not at all stewed in guajillo chile. The tortillas were very good. The birria that came tacos tasted nothing like I've ever had. The birria consomé didn't have a lick of chile flavor in it. That's what birria is supposed to be. It was more of a tomato-heavy liquid a la Mexicana sauce. Enchiladas verdes - VERY good. The sauce was perfect, and the proportion of everything in the enchiladas was perfect. Quesadilla de maíz - VERY good! Just like my mom used to make. The flight of salsas we we ordered was good. Nothing stellar, but good. The chile de arbol salsa was the winner. The chips were perfect. I have mixed feelings about Maíz for these reasons: The first time I visited, food excellent, service outstanding, decor fun, and I was able to chill with my friend. Prices were higher in proportion to portions, (The pancake they serve with some of the meals is tiny), but it was an overall good experience. Second visit, I invited a friend to join me because I had enjoyed that first visit. Food remained good, but conversation was not, because our waiter kept interrupting us. If he stopped at the table more than 5 times, I wouldn't be surprised. For the penultimate stop at the table, he gave us the bill, which we hadn't requested. There wasn't a line of people waiting, we hadn't been talking for a very long time, and many tables were unoccupied, so I'm not quite sure why we were rushed. Needless to say, disappointed. Amazing experience at Maíz! The restaurant is on the smaller side so we waited about 15-20 minutes for a table. There's no waiting area and they don't take your number, so you end up waiting off to the side. We ordered queso fundido while waiting for our food but it came out really fast within just a few minutes of sitting down. Not a complaint just didn't get much time to enjoy the appetizer. My chilaquiles were really good the pork and sauce complemented each other perfectly. The agua de jamaica was also great not overly sweet and tasted very natural. This was my second visit. When you are seated, you are greeted with three bowls; homemade tortilla chips, beans, and a green salsa. It was all delicious. Maiz chicken enchiladas: the enchiladas come with tortilla wrapped chicken in a creamy Maiz sauce with melted cheese (I forgot to request that they go light on that cheese), lettuce, tomato and sour cream drizzle. I requested red onion and extra sour cream. The sauce is well flavored. Perfect blended flavors of real Mexican enchiladas. The options are rice or beans as a side. This place has absolutely no waiting system in place--no list, no pagers, nothing. What makes this unforgivable is that we were standing right in front of the restaurant the entire time, and my husband went up to ask if our table was ready multiple times. There is no way they didn't know we were there. When we confronted the owner, they casually said, "I didn't see y'all so I gave it away, I didn't want to lose clients." It is incredibly insulting to be lied to when we were actively checking in. They didn't want to "lose clients," but by being greedy and completely disorganized, they just lost us forever. The first round is free, after that they charge for more beans and salsa, so be aware. To eat, we ordered the "Queso Fundido with Discada" as our starter and the "Milanesa Maiz" to split. To drink, a fresh squeeze lemonade. The lemonade was good; you can tell it was homemade! Fresh lime, sugar, and water. So good The queso fundido, THE BEST QUESO FUNDIDO I have ever had. We got it with Discada, which is a mix of meat (beef, sausage,bacon, onions,etc.) The discada was so good, very flavorful. The cheese they use was so good too, great quality. I Highly suggest getting the queso fundido. The fundido came with Miaz torillas (Corn tortillas). The tortillas you can tell and taste were made from scratch. I love a good handmade tortilla! The Milanesa Miaz was good, but a little too much for me. I think I would have preferred the milanesa without all the sauce and corn. It overpowered the dish in my opinion. It's a big piece of meat, so it's perfect to split. I only had two issues with this establishment: 1.)The food was good, but a lot of the items are à la carte /extra charge. I got tortillas for my queso fundido, but I had to pay extra to get tortillas for my Milanesa. Also, the Milanesa doesn't come with rice or beans; we had to order those items as extras too. It would have been nice to know that the entrée doesn't come with any sides, not even tortillas. I guess with this being an "upscale restaurant," sides are not included in the dishes. Not sure if the other entrées are like this. I paid extra for tortillas, rice, and salsa . I wanted more beans but didn't want to pay extra. 2.) The service was a bit slow, and our server/servers were not that attentive. We would need to flag a server down to get a refill. The food would get dropped off, and they didn't take the time to ask if everything was okay before leaving. I didn't know the entree didn't come with sides, and I needed an extra plate because I had stated we were splitting the entree. Ambiance is nice but place is small. On big holidays place can have a long wait. Service was okay and good. Appetizers were 15-17 which is pretty expensive and entrees 15-20. So if go with a family it's gonna be 100 dollars. Food is very good. It's authentic. Highly recommend the fish with green salsa, beef taquitos with guacamole. Be careful chip refills they'll charge you. It's a pet peeve of mine when waiters don't tell you they are charging you. Agua Frescas here are very good too. I'm really disappointed by the way we were treated. My family and I were excited to dine here, especially because the restaurant has such a warm, familiar atmosphere that reminds us of home. Unfortunately, that feeling was completely overshadowed by the manager's behavior. My mother was seated while the rest of us were still finding parking, which is a normal and understandable situation. When we arrived and sat down, the manager came over and abruptly told us he would not take our order, and that if we needed an explanation, my mother could tell us why. The tone was dismissive, condescending, and unnecessarily rude. There's a way to communicate policies with respect and basic courtesy, and this was not it. Hospitality is about making people feel welcome, not embarrassed or spoken down to. It's honestly a shame, because this place has so much potential to reflect the warmth and generosity that Mexican culture is known for, but experiences like this do the opposite. We chose to leave, and I hope management takes a moment to reflect on how they speak to customers. No one should be treated this way when simply trying to share a meal with their family. read more

The service could really use some work. The workers are nice enough but they are extremely inattentive. The server took our drink order, I only wanted water, she served me water in the small glass and then took the water with her to the back, didn't leave it there and never asked if i needed a refill. Once the food came out she just served it and left and never asked if we needed anything else and didn't come back around at any point. We had to get up and flag her down or ask for things by walking up to her. Heck she never even came to give us the bill, she disappeared after a time and so we had to get up and ask another server to charge us for the food. Now the food may be good, but the prices are pretty expensive for the amount of food they give you. When they say mini flautas they mean it, they're about the size of a finger, and come with more iceberg lettuce than anything else. I had to order 2 servings in order to feel fed, and that came out to 35 dollars for one person. Had a family of 4 and we all had the same issue where we needed more food in order to feel well fed. So the final balance came out to over 100 dollars. Overall i'd say this place is overrated, you can find authentic Mexican restaurants all over san antonio at a better price and that serve more food. The ambiance of the restaurant upon entering is lovely. It gives a very welcoming and peaceful vibe. The host sat me very quickly at a table that had chips, salsa, and refried beans ready to go. The salsa was warm and had a mild heat to it. The beans were delicious. I liked that the chips were clearly freshly made in the restaurant but they were a little too greasy although it did not stop me from eating the whole basket. I ordered the green chicken pozole because i'd never really had it before and i've always wanted to try it. It comes with sliced radishes, chopped onions, and shredded lettuce. I usually have pozole with cabbage but the lettuce was nice. I do think i prefer the red pozole but that is not an option here. I think i would come back to try the enchiladas. read more

The $25 picaña plate looks huge in their ad, but the real serving is way smaller. They say it's "weighed" and that cooking reduces it, but no steak loses half its size from grilling. So, it's been a year or so since I went to this restaurant and wanted to re-review it. In a city FULL of Mexican restaurants you would think the restaurant wouldn't buckle and dime you to death. The three guys seemed to be more interested in huddling by the bar and talking to one female staff member more than working and talking care of their customers. So, some might say I'm being picky but I guess my buttons got pushed when I asked them for another small bowl of 15 to 20 chips. Waiter informed me the first bowl is free and there would be a charge. really? That's rich. Then I asked for a little hotter sauce to go on my rather tasteless enchiladas. There was another charge for that. Incredible. My opinion only, but why nickel and dime your customers like that. There are SO many Mexican restaurants in San Antonio that don't do that, even really inexpensive ones. About cost, way too expensive for 3 enchiladas with lettuce dropped on top. Restaurant is cute but I'm sorry, that doesn't justify the cost and the poor service. A lot has changed in a year regarding service. Folks, there are more and better Mexican restaurants in San Antonio, this is one I'll never darken the door way of again.
