My boyfriend and I visited La Gloria on Thursday night. After having such a great experience with the culinaria week menu during lunch we decided to come back. However, this time the experience was very different in a really negative way. We arrived around 9pm. Our server took quite some time to greet us. A woman in her 40s-50s with curly black hair arrived. We placed our culinaria order right away. After some time, our entrees arrived before the appetizer. When we asked the server she just said "Oh yeah, the tostadas are coming". We were confused since the whole point is to enjoy the three course meal, but decided to let it slide. The whole time we were eating our food, we had to constantly ask for drink refills. Even though she was just conversing with another server in the middle of the restaurant. Although La Gloria at the Pearl advertises to close at 10pm, we witnessed the workers started to shut down the restaurant at 9:30pm. Turning off lights and turning people away. At that time, we received our mango cheesecake for dessert. Around 9:40, I had finished my cheesecake, however my boyfriend was half way through his. Our server then approached the table. She asked if we were going to order anything else, we said we were not and thanked her. She stood there with the toast tablet in her hands. My boyfriend asked if we could have a receipt. She said "of course", left and came back in a couple of seconds. She then put the receipt on the table and stood there. My boyfriend (who was clearly still eating) said "Thank you, we'll pay in a moment" to which she replied "Oh, it's because we are closed" and did not leave until paid AT 9:40PM. My boyfriend didn't even finish his dessert. We were very upset. She ruined the whole dining experience for us. We just paid and left. I have never had anybody in the food industry be so unprofessional at "closing time". She was not attentive to the table whatsoever, until it was time to pay the bill. For her to proceed to rush us out, even thought another table was still right next to us. With that being said, we are not planning on coming back. I really wanted to love La Gloria, but unfortunately it just didn't hit the mark for us. To start, the service was just okay. We've definitely experienced more attentive and engaging service elsewhere. I asked our server if the bistec taco was a top seller, and she seemed to take that as me ordering it which I get, things get busy, but it felt a little rushed. For appetizers, we ordered the guacamole and the chile con queso. The queso was actually pretty good and probably the highlight of the meal. The guacamole, however, fell flat for me. it definitely needed salt, pepper, and a good squeeze of lemon or lime to bring it to life. As for the entrees, I ordered the bistec tacos and was honestly disappointed. The meat was rubbery and lacked flavor. My husband got the shrimp aguachiles, and the shrimp were extremely soft almost raw and just tossed in the sauce. The presentation was beautiful, but it was missing that bright citrus and seasoning that really makes aguachiles shine. The seafood overall had a fishy/shrimpy taste that didn't come across as fresh. My mother-in-law ordered the Torre de mariscos, which leaned heavily on soy sauce and ended up overpowering the dish rather than enhancing it. Overall, the food just didn't wow us. Maybe my expectations are a little higher as a NOLA foodie, but this one missed the mark. Would I go back? Probably not. read more

We had such a great time - I especially enjoyed chatting with Joe, the bartender. He had a fantastic biker-style look that really stood out. I really wanted to love this place. It seems so lively with outside seating by the river and music playing. That's what caught my attention. The service was quick. We got seated within a few minutes. The inside seating had the restaurants name on the chairs which were so cute and they had unique decor on the walls with windows so we can see some of the outside view. I ordered the deshebrada sope. It was a nice presentation but overly seasoned. I couldn't finish the whole thing because it was very overwhelming. The sope part is more like a thicker corn tortilla not like a traditional sope. I'd say it was more tex mex. I also ordered the Fundido con chorizo which comes with chips and corn tortilla . The cheese was very good but you have to eat it quick before it settles and then it's hard to pull apart. This and the chips together were probably my favorite part of the meal. My friend got the Al Pastor taco meal. I had a taste of it and her meat was also overly seasoned which is odd because the rice and beans were on the bland side. Again I really wanted to love it. It was delicious. I'm a huge fan of enchiladas verdes in general though. I also got a margarita and it was extremely tasty! When in San Antonio, you have to try it. My party also liked the tortas de carnitas there as well. The restaurant itself was beautiful and very rustic. It has mosaic tiles and a more lived in feel that kinda matched the dish ware. It had rained earlier so they had shut the walls and didn't allow outdoor seating, but I was told the outdoor seating was quite nice and really nice vibe. I believe it faces the river walk. There's around 50 people worth of seating, and even more if there was outdoor seating. Service was fast and accommodating. They were really busy during this time though so there were less check ins with my party though. It has a huge lot for parking, so I wouldn't worry about that being a problem either! read more

My first impression was great--I loved the outdoor seating area, the quirky decor (perfect for photos), and the DJ playing fun music. I did appreciate that they texted us when our table was ready so we could walk around instead of waiting at the restaurant. The timing was pretty accurate, and we were given the option of indoor or outdoor seating--we chose outside for the vibe. Our server came quickly and was very friendly, but unfortunately, things went downhill from there. We ordered two margaritas and two virgin cocktails for the kids. When the drinks arrived, mine was in a plastic cup while my husband's was in a traditional margarita glass, which felt inconsistent. I have visited La Gloria before but the one located inside the airport. My mother-in-law stated that she has never been so we stopped in for some birthday lunch celebrations. We arrived as they opened and were promptly seated inside. We opted for inside because it was hot outside. The place itself is nice and spacious. There is indoor and outdoor seating available. We ordered some chilie con queso to start. I ordered a vegetarian tostada, and a side of elote with a diet soda. My mother-in-law ordered Deshebrada quesadilla and coffee. Everything came out pretty quickly and was absolutely delicious. We even ordered a birthday Flan to split. We did request a tres leches cake but they were out. Went for a birthday dinner with a party of 20. There was only a 30min wait! San Antonio can get pretty cold in January, so while the restaurant prepared our seating, we hung outside next to the patio heaters and sipped on some signature margaritas! Once inside the restaurant we were greeted by our waitress, she immediately grabbed our drink & appetizer order and brought out some chips and salsa. For a busy Saturday night, service was very smooth and the waitress was very helpful and attentive. Arrived around 7:30pm and finished up by 9pm. Lots of photo ops around the property. Mexicans don't eat here. Locals don't eat here unless they want very Americanized Tex-Mex. It's not a tourist trap but it's very business meeting, out of town family visiting, white washed Tex-Mex. The enchiladas are okay at best. The ingredients on the menu are toppings not fillings - and I tried 3 different ones. So if you get the veggie enchiladas then expect a cheese enchilada topped with everything else. The chips and salsa are both okay at best. For the price you can do way better. The food here was over all great, definitely needed a nap afterwards. The queso fundido with chorizo is essentially a meal for one with 4 corn and/or flour tortillas you can do half and half. The tostada and the sope were one each but very filling with delicious braised meat. Carolina who served us was delightful, she was quick and easy to order with. The place was definitely a vibe, the outdoor was next to the river, the decor was festive for November and had a great out door bar. This is definitely a happy hour spot for next time I'm in San Antonio, the location is PRIME! The food here seems very fresh and authentic. It came out quickly and hot. Our waitress was knowledgeable and helpful. The atmosphere was clean and upbeat. If you have sensitivity to sound you will definitely want to sit outside. We had an assortment of tacos tostadas, and sopes. We would come back for sure but sit outside. The table salsa is not the everyday salsa you are use too. It is good on food, but for chips it needs a bit more flavor is all. We still ate it up though. Not sure what the hype is about. Been here a few times over several years of coming here for work and the service is consistently terrible. Order a drink, asked if it was spicy, server told me no, yet it came out spicy and we talked about it and he just sat and stared at me. He left and came back and said the bartender made it spicy and still didn't offer to fix it. I order queso fundido and queso was brought out. It was fine decided to eat it. Server came back to check on us and looked at my phone I had open my last review, and said oh your looking at reviews. I explained to him I ordered queso fundido and was showing my partner the picture and what he brought rad wrong and just continued to explain the difference and didn't offer to bring what we ordered. I have mixed feelings about the food which is why I'd give it 3 stars. I enjoyed some things and then didn't enjoy others, about 50/50. Complementary guacamole, queso, salsa, and tortilla chips. Guacamole was light and refreshing, also really liked the queso. The salsa though was not it, it tasted salty and almost resembled a burnt taste? Even the color was more like grey/ black. We got the ceviche rojo and the torta to share. The potato chips were bland, tasted just like oil and not much of a potato flavor oddly. The carnitas was okay, the best part of the torta was the bread but even that felt kind of too oily. Ceviche was good, cucumbers felt like it didn't contribute much to the dish. I think this one needs a side of small bread to eat with though. We used the bun from the sandwich to eat some of the ceviche and it was way better than eating it alone or with the potato or tortilla chips. I am spending a couple days in San Antonio and on the recommendation of our Trolley Tours Bus driver I hit up La Gloria for some dinner. I ordered the verdes enchiladas and a margarita. Both came out pretty quickly and were delicious! It was super cold outside, so I at inside and not out on the patio. Next time I'll be sure to come when it's warm outside. I stumbled upon this place when parking at the Pearl and thought it looked super cute so I decided to give it a try. I looked up their menu and saw that they supposedly had award winning margaritas. I LOVE margaritas so I was excited to give it a try. I walked in and was seated promptly. They really need to figure out their A/C situation. It was muggy and hot indoors. They had fans but I'm not sure if they didn't work or if they just weren't turned on. Now sweating, I was craving a nice, cold margarita more than ever. The waiter suggested a signature margarita and it sounded good so I decided to get it. It was supposed to come with mango, pineapple and Granny Smith apply garnish so I was expecting a gorgeous margarita topped with fresh slices of fruit and I asked for tajin run. The cocktail they brought out was basic. They didn't even add garnish. When I asked the waiter what happened to the garnish he said the bartender forgets sometimes and that he would bring me the garnish. He proceeds to come back with finely diced fruit in a small cup and dumped it on top of my margarita lol it was embarrassing. I ordered the chicken sopes and a side of carved elote. The Sopes was yummy but the corn was not good and had a bunch of corn silk mixed in so it was hard to remove it from the cup. I also saw that they had a happy hour menu and the margaritas were $8. I wanted to give it a try to see what the difference was between their happy hour Margarita and their specialty margaritas. Their happy hour margarita was absolutely terrible. Tasted like watered down margarita mix lol. So I guess if you go here, the specialty margaritas are what you're going to want to get. I wouldn't call them award winning because I've definitely had better at Texas Road House lol but they weren't bad for $15. Overall, I was disappointed. Our server was friendly, but very slow. When our food arrived, she took our appetizer plates, and I was definitely not finished with what I had on my plate. The same thing happened with my drink, another server came and took the "empty" glasses, but my drink was certainly not finished and she took it away. We also waited over 10-15 minutes after our table was cleared before we had to ask for our checks, when she should have just realized everything was gone and brought them. They also don't tell you that if you have a group of 6+, 20% gratuity is included in your bill. My three little things below cost over $40, which in my opinion is extremely overpriced for what I received. Paloma 7/10 This tasted very much like a plain lime margarita on the rocks, not very grapefruity at all. It was happy hour when we ordered, but we definitely did not get charged happy hour prices. Queso and guac were very good. Bistec especial 7/10 The only difference between this and the regular bistec tacos is the cheese. It was good, there was a lot of meat on these tiny little 3" shells. I just wish there was more flavors to it, it's so plain. Little bit of lettuce or some type of sauce or crema would just take it to the next level of flavor. I also think an option to pick 3 different tacos would be fantastic and super popular. Elote 4/10 Definitely not even close to elote. My corn was sitting in a TON of corn juice/water, like when you heat up corn in a boiling pot of water on the stove (see photos). On top was a dollop of mayo and ton of cotija. When I mixed the mayo in, it basically dissolved in the water (that I didn't realize was so watery because the cheese covered it, but by that time it was way too late)... Disgusting. It was like just eating plain sweet corn out of a can. Not even close to elote AT ALL. The amount of corns was nice though. But they really need to serve this not in corn juice/water, and just some sautéed or grilled corn and all the other ingredients. Would not order this again here. read more

I haven't eaten at La Gloria in a while, but I did visit it again last weekend when I was in the area. La Gloria is one of those places that are just so Texan, so San Antonio. I probably take places like this a little for granted, but it's definitely worth a visit. Why? The property is pretty incredible. Unless it's a really horrible day (too hot for you, too cold for you, or raining), you absolutely must sit outside. Gravel under your feet, tables overlooking the river, ping pong tables, shade from the live oak trees, an outdoor bar...it's a place that's made for a pretty day outside. Last weekend, it was a little hot for me (already in April, typical for Texas), so I was called to La Gloria, to enjoy a frozen margarita at one of the tables facing the river. And it was exactly where I wanted to spend a hot day with a cold drink. So whether you live in San Antonio or are just visiting, remember that La Gloria has this great patio for a pretty day! read more

A solid option for Mexican cuisine that is not too fancy but not too casual. It is usually pretty busy but we often show up just after opening and have no problem getting seated right away, even on the weekends. There is seating indoors and ample seating outdoors. The outdoor area is super cute as it overlooks the riverwalk and there are cute lights at night. Our favorite is the veracruzano ceviche. The fish is always very fresh and it has the perfect amount of salt vs citrus/lime flavor without leaning too heavily to each side. We once got the olive ceviche and it has very strong olive flavors so I would not recommend it unless you really enjoy olives. The tacos are the smaller street taco size and the combo has some delicious fluffy rice and beans.The bistec especial is good but has A LOT of cheese, fair warning. The fish tacos are awesome. The tostadas, tortas, and quesadilla are all very good. The maragaritas are strong but very tasty. I especially enjoy the mangonada that comes with a tasty Tamarindo straw. We're visiting from Seattle to San Antonio TX and had a dinner at LA Gloria on Sat around 5pm. There is a pay parking but full. But we found free street parking near by the restaurant. As soon as we entered the restaurant, we were seated at a table. Inside the restaurant is a colorful and outdoor patio area available but we sat inside w 6 ppl as it was a cold day.
