Hard to find La Gloria Market, but glad I did! They have changed their name to Patrones (Market & Restaurant). There are two separate entrances, the restaurant is on the righthand side. I had a delicious carne asada burrito. The prices are a great value. The tortilla tasted homemade and Im guessing it is since they have a market with all authentic foods and meat market as well. A great place to go if you are wanting authentic Mexican food. Can't wait to go back and try something else! read more

Stopped by recently after a quick after-work grocery run before hauling butt back to Vancouver. It is a dive-y kind of canteen shop where you order at the cashier, grab a spot and wait for your meal to be brought to you. I wasn't sure what everything was so I just ordered a burrito to go, and got to choose a meat. I picked lengua and it was so tender and juicy. It was a hefty thing filled with rice, cheese, lettuce, onions, beans and lengua. My only complaint is that some components inside were cold (parts of the rice, some parts of the wrap) while the meat itself was piping hot; kind of wish it was more of a consistent experience but for the price point it was easily overlooked. I will be back again after I've researched what some of the other things are so i can work my way through the menu! read more

I dropped in to get a breakfast burrito, I had heard that the owners here owned Neto's which I have already waxed poetic about before. And this place did not disappoint, the burrito could be lifted for strength training, the chorizo was most prominent, not the egg, which is one of the reasons to love them. The red sauce and green sauce were delicious, though the ted sauce was better with it. My husband and I shared the burrito and still have almost half leftover for later. People were great, service workers as very quick, and when we aren't running to an appointment, we will be back to peruse the actual store which looked cool. I came here with my Yelper friend C. She ordered the enchilida which came with 2 of them and a side of rice and bean. On top she she also got a generous amount of sour cream. In the past, they used to give out complimentary chips and salsa but with rising cost that now cost $2. I got 3 tacos for about $2 each. I got one beef, one chicken and one pork (there are three options to choose from but I got the al pastor). The prices for the taco are very reasonable and in terms of the tastes, it was definitely better than what you would get in Vancouver. The meat portion was very generous. Overall, the food tasted good and I would highly recommend if you have not been. I also got the horchita and that was good but I did find it a bit watered down. Service was great. The decor was very average. There are some Mexican paintings or decoration like the Indian tribe statue. Food is inexpensive here and there are plenty of parking in front. read more

We came into La Gloria yesterday morning for a burrito, and ended up with a burrito plus the tacos. Their house made salsas are wonderful too. Our stop was short and spicy-those sauces pack some awesome heat! Their burrito was so flavorful. We love their food and we cannot recommend them highly enough! The market houses a "market" section with Mexican groceries, a deli, and bakery, and a small restaurant serving a wide range of typical Mexican food. I didn't get a great look at the market side since I was just there for dinner. The restaurant operation is completely no frills - they'll bus the tables for you, but you order and pay at the counter, and the decor is very minimal. But the people are really nice and they clean up after each group. I had a vegetarian sope with a side of rice and beans and an horchata. Some wonderful complimentary chips and salsa were brought out first which came as a surprise. The sope was huge! Almost twice the size of what I expected, both in the diameter and the height of the veggies piled on top. All very fresh and very tasty. The rice and beans order ended up being unnecessary since the sope was so big and I ended up taking a lot home, but they were delicious too. The rice was some of the best Mexican rice I've had! I also loved the horchata - it was thick and less sweet than many places make it. The total bill was $15.74, a great price for this much food. On my way out, I did stop at the market to buy a piece of flan for later, which was just otherworldly. Perfect texture and rich flavour. And also huge. The other fresh baked goods looked great too. If I'm back in Bellingham I'm definitely grabbing one of those conchas! read more

Giant log of chorizo burrito goodness. Lots of food in this order, two meals or a share plate. The burrito is stick to your ribs good. It's tastes like the quintessential ground meat burrito. The service is quick and efficient. I love the building, it's the sign of success. You can tell this place started out in one of three shops and expanded to overtake the entire building. It was a bonus stop for sure as the food was super delicious and filling and at a very reasonable price. The burrito was so so big but was less than $10 USD. We actually ran into a Canadian couple there who said that they would drop by this place every single time they are down in the area, as everything on the menu has been impressive. What a disappointment on this visit, it had always been good. Didn't have time to sit and eat so I ordered a burrito to go. Ordered Carnitas and they were out, this is a staple and already out at noon. I got my order and didn't get any chips, I asked the lady and she said none for to go. I've been there a couple times now and have had a burrito and a tamale plate, both vegetarian and both very good. My mother had a chicken tamal and said it was also very good. They have all the meats and vegetarian, so something for most. When we ate in, we got free chips and salsa. The salsa was different and very good. When I took a burrito for take out, no chips and salsa. Just an FYI. The staff has been friendly each time and were gracious when my mother wanted to practice her Spanish. The restaurant is attached to a small market that has pretty much anything you would want and includes a meat counter, pastries, a LOT of candy, and general groceries. I love the refried bean here! It has been a while since I have such tasty refried bean. I am usually not a fan of it as it has always been grainy to me. Here the refried bean is smooth as paste and has this fragrant taste that makes me wonder if lard has been added. I like Mexican food though my experience with it is probably more of the Tex-Mex version than the real thing. I am still learning. I had the beef enchilada which came with the green salsa, rice, refried bean and small salad with sour cream. It was a huge plate and I struggled to finish it all. My friend was also new to Mexican food and she asked the staff for recommendation. He was very patient in explaining various dishes to her as well as the drinks. We had the michilada and tamarind drink. Refreshing and tasty too. The staff was also very kind to top up our salsa and chips when we asked as it was just so good! At around $10 for most dishes, it is still pretty affordable. The place has mostly Spanish speaking customers. Attached to the restaurant is the grocery store selling mainly Mexican food products. Since we were not going to go any farther than Bellingham and we noticed some pics from another person of this place, we decided a stop was in order. From the reviews here, this seemed like a sure bet for good Mexican that was close enough down the border where I did not have to go further down the line. Saw people in here, alright, first sign that there is some safety in here, people ordering and eating here. The decor is weird, with a big wooden statue and some very colorful Mexican banners, you know that this place serves Mexican food. From the people who come in here, to the Spanish that gets thrown around, the locals seem to like this place. We ordered a number of dishes here, from the beef ranchero, chicken enchiladas and some carnitas to finish our dining experience here. What you do, is order at the front, then make your payment and wait at a table you find in their small dining room. Their are booths on the side, and tables in the centre, and most people are likely to be staring at the tv above while they wait patiently for their food. First up, before your food actually gets there, they supply a good trey of fresh corn tortillas with some fresh salsa, this could be promising as these chips are not bad, a little on the thicker side than I'm used to but good, and home, nonetheless. The food eventually came, and if you want value for the buck this place definitely delivers. The platters were massive, backed to the brim where you think that they may over spill. If you like platters of food that will over fill you till you burp, overly sauced plates, you will find it here. I know Mexican isn't a show of food style and plating, but it was a little over-done. From the extra chewy beef pieces (gnaw-gnaw), to the over use of salt (where is the water!), it was not what I was expecting from what I was reading here, but as they say 'maybe I was here on a bad day'? I've now come here twice, and both times we did, however, order the carnitas, they weren't bad but if I want really good Mexican food I have to run more 'South' of this to get it, keep on the I-5. If you don't want to go that far, come here, the market next door is not bad if you plan to make your own at home. read more

* South of the Border * Someone once said, "You have to go South of the Border for really good Mexican food." I think they were right. This little Mexican restaurant, just across the border, is an offshoot of the Mexican grocery store next door. It offers the best Mexican food within 1 hour of downtown Vancouver I have had. (Yes, I'm being optimistic with the border crossing times - but with Nexus you can make it in under an hour sometimes.) I've been many times, and it is always consistently good. This time I ordered a dish I haven't had there before - the steak ranchero plate. Prior to the food arriving they brought fresh hot chips and a nice smoky salsa. It all started because I overdid the yard work and was too exhausted to make fish tacos for dinner. I whipped out the Yelp App and typed in Fish Tacos. There were quite a few good options in Bellingham, BUT, La Gloria Market popped up in the search box. I've ignorantly driven by forever thinking it was just a little market...and never thought about dropping in. However the wonderful Yelpsters wrote reviews about the fantastic Mexican food. Okay- this was too exciting to wait any longer...hopped into the car and drove straight to La Gloria. Ordered fish tacos and a carne asada burrito plus two Pacifico beers with lime. The server brought out chips and salsa as we awaited our food. The salsa was outstanding. The food arrived quickly and tasted as good as it looked. The fresh handmade tortillas were delicious. The beans were the best we've had in a very long time. The fish tacos were excellent and the burrito was filling and tasty. After we finished our meal we walked through their market and purchased home made tortillas and perfect avocados. I would have never even thought of pulling into this unassuming place of it weren't for my friend. My friends and I needed a lunch spot post border wait and my friend directed us here. Upon entering, I felt out of place and not in my comfort zone. But after sitting down and looking at all the delicious food that everyone was chowing down on, I wanted to fit in so bad! The two ladies at the front working were really nice and knew I new, since they asked if I wanted the cactus that was included in my Huarache. However, when I ordered the horchata they have a smile and a huge glass of fresh horchata. We were greeted with warm, fresh out of the kitchen chips and salsa. I really loved the non-greasy and crisp crunch of the chips and the salsa had a lot of kick to it, just a dab and I felt the heat (note: I'm a baby when it comes to spicy). You know it's good when the salsa and chips are 1/2 way devoured by the time you take out your phone to snap a picture. My Huarache with my choice meat of Al Pastor came within a few minutes and it was pretty big! I was scared it'd be too little considering the low price of $5.99 but it filled me up really well. The freshly made, thicker version of a tortilla had a really nice chew to it and topped with the rich, flavorful pork and fresh lettuce, cilantro and sour cream, mixed in with the creamy bean paste, it was flavour after flavour of goodness! I couldn't handle the green chile/cilantro salsa or the other even hotter one of course, but my boyfriend loaded up his plate with the sauce and ate it all with complete satisfaction. Lastly, the horchata was probably the most legit horchata I've ever had, so much so I was missing the overly cinnamon and sweet horchata that's usually served in Vancouver. This horchata had a nice balance of sweetness and cinnamon with a subtle rice-y texture. This was my friend's first ever horchata and she loved it. Overall, I could definitely feel the authentic Mexican vibe and taste from La Gloria Market. I would come back for more if I'm feeling like Mexican food and I'm across the border.
