I really wanted to like this place because the staff was genuinely kind and welcoming with reasonable prices, but unfortunately the food didn't live up to the experience. I ordered PASTELITOS CUBANOS GUAVA & CHEESE, HAM & CHEESE EMPANADA, CAFE CON LECHE, & Postre Balcarce. The empanada was so dry that I had to stop and drink water just to swallow it. The guava and cheese pastry had the same issue, very dry and lacking flavor. The Postre Balcarce was the best food item I tried there. It wasn't amazing, but it was enjoyable enough to finish. The CAFE CON LECHE had good flavor, although it was served so hot that I had to wait quite a while before I could drink it. I always appreciate friendly customer service, and that was the highlight of my visit. I just wish the food matched the hospitality. It's a little Colombian, a little Mexican, I'm not sure really. I think most bakeries like this are Colombian in essence but with a lot of Mexican influence due to patrons and employees. Skip the odd fruit drinks (Guanabana, Soursop) and try a Guava drink, or perhaps Passion Fruit or something. Get some baked goods and perhaps a chorizo, a guava pastry, or some Colombian chica's phone number. This whole area of North Jersey is awash with amazing (and average) Latin places that are largely not represented on Yelp. It would be worth spending a week in North Jersey (yes, I said a week in North Jersey) and exploring all of them. And yes I'm talking about the bakeries, not the chicas. But that too? Super upset with this place, I made a custom Tres Leches Cake order for my boss' birthday since he loves that cake and when I picked it up today, the cake looked different than the ones I normally get. I asked if it was "tres leches", the lady looked at the receipt, paused and then said "yes" with a very skeptical voice. For years this was the Cuban Bakery in Union City. A must! After many years absence I stopped on my way upstate to buy sweets and a Cuban Sandwich and Bread. The store counter did not display any of the Cuban staples that I was expecting, so when it was my turn to order and the young woman behind the counter spoke to me I caught her Uruguayan accent and realized it has changed ownership. It makes sense that Union City is even the most population dense city in the COUNTRY. The fact that Bergenline Ave. has constant foot traffic means that the baked goods are always fresh, the most important factor when it comes to bakeries! When I want the best of the best of Uruguayan cuisine, I head to Union City. Pizzarra's on Bergenline Ave. is known for the best Uruguayan pizza and chivito sandwiches, but Las Chicas has the best bizcochos. What are bizcochos? Bizcochos are the penultimate snack in Uruguay. A variation of the croissant, there are dozens of styles. Savory, sweet, crispy, soft, with a ton of fillings. The bizcochos at Las Chicas are UNMATCHED - which pains me to say, as I have a lot of love for my bizcocherias in Elizabeth, NJ. Their dulce de leche and membrillo and cream bizcochos are delectable. Every bite is to be savored. All of the baked goods at Las Chicas are labeled, and the location is spacious, well-decorated, and inviting! My first solo trip to Union City was awesome because I found this place. Their pasteles are really, really good. We ordered the pasteles with guava as well as the pasteles with beef (sounds weird, but trust me, they're delicious). I haven't had the coffee or anything else on the menu, but there were a bunch of people sitting in the restaurant enjoying breakfast & coffee, which looked really good. The service was pretty good, and the restaurant was spartan, but nice. Best part is, this place is really cheap. We ordered a ton of pasteles for a pittance. My 4 year quest to find the mighty "Chivito" in New Jersey has concluded. I have discovered it in a diminutive little cafe that I have easily passed a hundred times in my travels through Bergenline's "Miracle Mile" in Union City and West NY. The Holy Grail of sandwiches has been hiding out as the "Filet Mignon Deluxe" ($8.95) only known to the Bergenline faithful that patronize this bakery regularly, for Uruguayan pastries and breads. The baked goods look sensational. I bought my son two chocolate cakes that were filled with Dulce De Leche and covered with chocolate ganache and they were decadent and delicious. The Milanese de Pollo that I ordered for my wife was very good as well. It was a large chicken breast with a fine bread crumb coating that was covered with layer of ham and dry aged mozzarella. Being of Italian-American origin I have most definitely had better Chicken Cutlets, but this was a solid representation of it's genre. Milanese of beef and Chicken is very much a beloved dish in Uruguay and Argentina. OK, but now to the main event.....El Chivito. Thinly sliced Filet Mignon topped with ham, pancetta and mozz and garnished lettuce, tomato, roasted peppers hard boiled eggs, mayo and a roll that could best be described as a cross between a Portuguese Roll and Brioche Bun in terms of texture; if not flavor. It was very unique and served as a terrific foundation for the sandwich. Now this may not be the best sandwich in the world as some such as Tony Bourdain have claimed, but it most definitely holds a place in the pantheon of greats and supplies a crave worthy experience that you do not want to end. In conclusion my rating for Las Chicas Bakery is 5 stars and it is based solely on the Chivito which is the only item on the menu that matters to me. I could very well be a bastard and deduct a star, because they refused to sell me the bread so I can make my own. But I forgive them. read more
