La Guerrense is an assuming place in DeFuniak Springs, Florida that had I not been coming here specifically for this Mexican restaurant (and using Google Maps), I would have never noticed it. Walking up, they had a couple people selling their wares at tables. Walking inside, it is basically market with a few tables in the front. None of this should dissuade you. I have always maintained that the best Mexican food comes from these hole-in-the-wall, mom-and-pop type joints rather than a restaurant with an emphasis on ambiance. The service here was friendly, but disorganized. I walked in and was unsure if I should seat myself or nor. I asked the man at the counter and he pointed me to a table. I sat for a bit until someone noticed me. Once I was noticed, my server was friendly enough. I ordered three tacos, an asada, one chorizo and one cabeza. The food took a bit to come out, but when they did come out, I have to say they they were pretty good. My favorite of the three was the cabeza, followed by the asada, then the chorizo. The service again, kind of failed. No one came to check on me and when I was done, it took too long for the server to come hand me my bill. I finally kind of stood up by my table. A server came over and then asked if I was done. The service was very disorganized, but the food was pretty good and very authentic. Ultimately, I would definitely recommend LA Guerrense if you are in DeFuniak Springs, Florida and craving Mexican food. I was debating between four and five stars due to the disorganized service, but ultimately, the service was what it was and not that huge of a deal. I will give it five stars. read more

I come here to buy fresh corn tortillas. They come warm wrapped in paper. Just ask for them at the register. There also is a small market inside. The meat market is in the back. You can buy premarinated fajitas or carne asada. read more

I found this place on Yelp. I had an appointment in defuniak & this place was highly recommended on Yelp so we gave it a try. I'm not familiar with the area so if I didn't know what I was looking for, I would've driven right past it. It is a mix of a taqueria/supermarket As soon as you walk in, you can seat yourself & a server will come to your table with a menu. A complete hole in the wall but we knew that it was the place to be because it got busy fast since we went around the beginning of lunch time. I ordered: 3 Tacos Al Pastor, mega burrito al pastor with rice & beans & a kids chicken quesadilla with rice & beans. We were immediately impressed with how generous they were on the portions. They had two types of salsa for my tacos; verde & rojo.. I used them both & loved them. Overall we loved this place & will definitely come back. Came to try the Quesabirria tacos that are shown on the pictures, but it's only on Saturdays and Sundays. So i ordered a cuban torta... disappointing. Had ground beef and a hotdog, as well as ham and cheese. I had better tortas than this one. When i asked a server about the Quesabirria, she seemed not familiar with it, and the other server was not that enthusiastic serving. And I spoke in Spanish. read more

Location shown is wrong if it's still showing downtown DeFuniak'. It's actually about a mile west of where Yelp is showing it. It's across from Regions Bank. Excellent authentic Mexican food. Rufino and Israel are very friendly and professional. Their food is the freshest. They have a grocery store as well where you can buy fresh vegetables, beans, meet, and rice. They sell all sorts of Mexican meats like carne asada and censina. After going to this restaurant you will never want to go go to the thousands of standard Tex mex restaurants that are out there. read more

This is as authentic as it comes. The nachos (not pictured) were great. The chicken on them was seasoned perfectly and toppings were plentiful. The enchiladas were good, I wish the chicken on the inside was spiced the same as the chicken on the nachos. Rice and beans were PERFECT! hubby said the burrito was good, he probably wouldn't get the chorizo again, he said maybe get the steak instead. He also liked the beans and rice. Staff was friendly, lots of customers for a small location. They sell Hispanic groceries and snacks as well. Good place, we'll be back! read more

DO NOT GO! After reading the reviews we decided to give this place a try while on a road trip. We were encouraged when we got there to see that it was filled with all Mexican customers, so we figured the food must be good. Unfortunately after waiting 45 minutes, our food still had not arrived. Several other tables had come in after us, ordered, eaten, and left! We asked several times about our order, and were told it was coming. At one point we asked if ANY PART of our order could be brought out. No luck! The best part is, neither our server nor the owner apologized. Nothing. No explanation, no "I'm sorry," no offer to bring us something while we waited. We paid for our soft drinks and left. Unless you want to go to a shabby, dingy, dirty little place, and wait forever - and be treated badly - don't waste your time. If I could give them zero stars I would. Horrible experience. read more
