Stopped by this restaurant the other day to try something different instead of the usual La Jaliciense. Ordered an assortment of tacos/gordita including barbacoa, lengua, tripas, pastor as well as a queso beef dip and Jamaica as a beverage. Was pleasantly surprised to get some free chips and dip which was decent. Some of the chips were undersalted or a bit grainy/sandy tasting but the salsa was decent. Tacos Barbacoa (4.5/5): Their best taco for sure. Very tender pieces of shredded meat, not too fatty but still very flavorful. Reminiscent of the cabeza taco at la jaliciense. Tacos Lengua (4/5): Good amount of lengua pieces that are also pretty tender and tasty. All their tacos are salty enough, and I liked how the lengua pieces were cubed into smaller pieces than other spots. Beef queso dip (4/5): Rich queso with ground beef mixed within, a decent appetizer for sure and would recommend ordering this. Tacos Tripas (2.5/5): I asked before ordering if they would be pretty crispy as this is how I enjoyed Tripas in Mexico city, San Antonio, etc. and they confirmed it would be. When I received it, very few pieces were crispy and many of them were oily/soggy. Some tasted slightly burnt. Although the portion of meat was very generous, I felt the quality could have been higher. Gordita Pastor (3/5): The tacos pastor also had decent portions and was well seasoned, but the issue was that it lacked tenderness and was pretty firm. The jamaica was a bit too sweet. They provide beans if you order 3 tacos but will increase the costs to accommodate this, I would request no beans and just order the tacos a la carte in the future. Overall, it is still an authentic Mexican spot in North Augusta and pricing is fair, but I prefer La Jaliciense by a fair margin for the variety and quality of meat within the tacos. read more

Service was awful. Server was less than helpful. The server removed napkin off dirty table to provide during my meal. Less than courteous in attitude and demeaner. Thanked the cook tipped the cook and departed. Will stick with Monterray and Aiken Augusta Hwy Resteraunt for good food and service. Its good to be able to understand Spanish. read more

No joke. This place is legit. My wife and I are southern California transplants to SC and my wife is Mexican. Her grandparents came to America from Mexico (Sinaloa and Nuevo León) and brought their traditional recipes with them. I grew up in a primarily Mexican neighborhood in southern California, so we both know what good Mexican food is; trust, we're harsh critics when it comes to Mexican food. I've worked with people from Mexico who say that outside of Mexico, the best Mexican food comes from California. If we endorse this place, then you can trust my review. read more

Nice Mexican place! Conveniently located in North Augusta. Prices are very reasonable and service is great. There's a large parking lot out front too. My husband and I shared the fajitas for two, it was $16 and HUGE! We had a bunch of leftovers for breakfast the next day too. Definitely a good place to check out! read more

Awesome place for authentic Mexican food. I got the SLP special, which was $9.50 and included a burrito, enchilada, taco, tostada, chile relleno, and rice and beans. Huge amount of food, needless to say, I took half of it home. My girlfriend got Vegetarian A special and loved it too. Very clean place and really good. Ambience. B Service. B Food. B+ Price. A Experience Dec. 27, 2014... For authentic Mexican faire, I'm impressed! Also, I notice a lot of Mexicans come in and the TV is blaring Mexican soap operas. Must be a good sign if your own people come here rather than the American Mexican restaurants in neighborhood. The server/host/ cashier girl was friendly, but didn't let on she communicated with English that well. Doable, but some things she didn't get and I just let it go. Ie request for hot water and got iced water. They have an English menu BUT, I wanted to try the authentic and couldn't figure out the Specials Mexican menu. All I could make out with my dictionary and Siri on the iPhone that they carry tongue and tripe too! Various dishes and flavors from different regions in Mexico. I'm glad their seasoning is not all about salt. You actually add your own flavors of chopped onions, jalepenos, or and fresh lime. They have Valentina salsa hot sauce which gives a nice vinegar flavor. You'll need pull out your Spanish dictionary to understand the more authentic ways of meats and dishes. Way beyond your American mex rest. I had the menudo stomach soup. Very light, but full of bite size stomach. I added the onion. Jalepeno and lime to give it he zing it needed. The ground beef is not over salty like most restaurants. Had the chili riellnno enchilada and taco. Wish I had with different meats. Next time. Also need to order a separate order of rice and beans and the guacamole salad. I want to go back but will take my Spanish speaking friends to translate! read more

I'll start this review off by saying I am a Northerner. Around New York City, there are a lot of Mexican/South American restaurants, and there are a lot of Central/South American people. Competition is fierce! Of course there are tons of restaurants there that serve bland, mediocre "americanized" mexican food, just as there are here in Augusta. But there are a few places that serve really GOOD authentic medixcan places, and I used to go all the time. Having lived down here for a year now, I had a serious craving for some "real" authentic Mexican food for quite some time. I've tried the various restaurants around the city, and found them all to be lacking. But it drove me crazy--there are plenty of people from Central and South America around here, where do they go when they want a little taste of home? There HAD to be a place SOMEWHERE. And then I found it. I was let in on the secret. SLP. A couple of us decided to go and take a gander at what they offered, and it did not disappoint. First off, let me say the restaurant itself is small, clean, and sparsely decorated. It's actually pretty much NOT decorated, so if you like restaurants with fancy decor, this is definitely not the place for you. Also, the restaurant(at least that day) was very warm, either they don't have AC, don't turn it on, or they like it warm, I don't know. There is a big TV behind the counter playing Soccer highlights and Latin movies, both of which were fun to watch. The service; Well, it was great! She didn't really speak english, and it was just one person, but we got across our order(kept it simple, just sort of trusted they would figure out what was good and give it to me), and she was prompt with delivering our drinks and responding to requests. We were immediately served chips and salsa, which tasted freshly made. They were set upon and GONE in a matter of minutes. We had to ask for more! The food came out quickly. The portions were HUGE. The taste? Unbelievable. Don't get me wrong, they have some "americanized" mexican food options, and the people who ordered those dishes were extremely happy. No evidence of the plates of "slop" as seen in other restaurants around here. All too often you get a plate with a splatter of beans, a lump of rice, and a burrito in there somewhere. This was much more cleanly presented, but that didn't mean there wasn't a TON of food. The food was absolutely DELICIOUS. It was what I think of as "real" mexican food. No crunchy yellow pre-made taco shells(nothing against those, I love those, but that's not authentic in my mind), no globs of sour cream and piles of Kroger brand cheddar cheese. This was REAL mexican food. And it was spectacular. The tacos were great, we tried a variety of the options and all were generously filled, tasty, and cheap! The chimichanga was delicious. The quesadilla had perfectly cooked chicken, and the fajitas were delicious and generous(like I said, not all authentic mexican food, there was some americanized stuff there). I really can't say there was anything that we ordered that wasn't good. It was all delicious! And lastly, the price. We all ate like kings and had enough for another meal in our take-out boxes. We have been in search of some AUTHENTIC Mexican food. Coming from Tucson, we are not fans of Tex-Mex which is very common not this side of the country. I had rolled tacos that were great! The carne asada that my husband ordered was to seasoned and tasty. The only draw back and why i cannot give this place 5 stars is because the service was HORRIBLE! The young lady that was at the counter talked with what looked her family that was eating there. She paid very little attention to us. At one point she went outside to show her family that finally left something that happened to her car in the parking lot. We would come back here just because of the food. This place is very small, but very clean. The service is excellent even though they don't speak very good English. They have never gotten my order wrong. They offer AUTHENTIC mexican food as well as a few dishes to please the tex-mex crowd that everyone is used to around here. I keep going back for their lengua tacos, which are to die for. Their juaraches are EXCELLENT as well. The beer is SUPER CHEAP - even for those fine Mexican imports - Dos Equis, Modelo, Tecate...pitchers or bottles. Food comes out fast, as in typical Mexican Restaurants. Their guacamole is the best I've ever had - creamy and chunky at the same time..DEFINITELY go here every time I'm on this side of town. These tacos are amazing. My favorite is Lengua ( yes, tongue). I have tried every place for tongue tacos and these are the best!

With their 4.5 stars on Yelp, I had fairly high expectations for this place. Needless to say, I was pretty disappointed. I ordered a chicken fajita and it was, for lack of a better word, BLAND. It didn't even have salt in it. It seemed like they threw a chicken breast, jalapeños, and green peppers (some of which them still had the seeds inside) into a pan, heated it up, and called it a day. The dinner portion size is actually smaller than the lunch portion at other Mexican joints in town. They may offer "real deal" Mexican food but I certainly didn't get it. The only real difference is the fact that they add one measly piece of avocado on top of the pico. Other than that, this place is not at all impressive. Drive 100 feet down Atomic and go to La Jalisciense if you want some real Mexican. read more

Service was not good, food was very bland, nothing special about this place. My daughter had to wait 30 min for her order which we think they forgot about. The carne asana was definitely not a ribeye -- it was a very poor cut of flank steak that wasn't even cooked properly. We threw it out. Only edible thing we ordered was the burrito special. If I want Mexican food in North Augusta, this is where I go. It's small, and there's nothing fancy about it. No pretense here. Just a good, solid meal every time. The ownership is friendly, and the food is consistent. They offer a standard menu and then a smaller, more authentic menu that is in Spanish. I don't speak much Spanish, but I've learned to navigate the menu. The tacos are my favorite here. read more

My wife and I recently moved to the Augusta area from South Texas, so we're very familiar with good mexican cuisine as well as great tex-mex food. SLP is certainly a hole in the wall sort of mexican restaurant, which in our experience either means it's going to be great or just average. Based on the other reviews for SLP we were hoping it'd be a diamond in the rough, but we were a bit on the disappointed side once we'd left. It was pretty small inside, and it was kind of hot inside despite all the shades being closed. The food itself was decent at best, but I can't reason giving it five stars. My wife had the SLP special which came with two ground beef tacos on the side as well as an enchilada and chalupa on the main dish along with rice and beans and everything else. The ground beef in her entree was way too greasy, and along with the sauce on her food the whole plate was overly greasy. I had the carne asada, which in itself was decent but had quite a bit of fat still on it around the edges. We also had a side of what they call 'carne dip', or rather ground beef queso. The dip seemed like they simply scooped a bunch of the greasy ground beef into a bowl and poured some cheese sauce over it, and once we mixed it all it was overly thin and greasy. Normally we can finish off a regular/large sized ground beef queso along with our entrees, but we could only stomach maybe a quarter of the dip, and a few hours later after we got home both of us were feeling a little queasy from all the grease. Overall, we will likely not be returning to SLP anytime soon. read more
