I was amazed that La Kalidad was in the Newark Farmer's Market on August 20th, Sunday. So I looked at the pastries and recognized their serve Filipino-inspired flavors on their venoisserie or croissants, danishes and a whole other baked goods that belong in this category. They were priced decently like around $5 - $6 which depends on what you buy. They have a whole lot to offer, and enticed every customer in the Farmer's Market.
They are 2 pastry chefs that worked on few fine dining restaurants in Los Angeles, worked at FB corporate kitchens as pastry chefs. Both of them were born and raised in the Philippines. So they have the culinary background and experience to make high- caliber business partners making their way for combining Venoisserie with Filipino-inspired flavors whether it is savory and sweet.
So I ordered the following:
Bistek with Caramelized Onions and Gruyere cheese danish - a savory danish that had a slightly caramelized and sweet onions mixed with their bistek ("steak in soy sauce marinade") paired with a gruyere cheese. I thought the salty cheese overpowered the bistek and caramelized onions. It was ok probably a 3.5/5. We weren't impressed by this savory danish. Maybe choose a different cheese like mozzarella to balance out the flavors.
Ube pop tart - so this croissant is filled and jam packed with smooth and creamy ube halaya topped with an ube royal icing drizzle on top. It is not overly sweet, but OMG! the ube halaya is smooth, creamy and you can definitely taste the ube halaya. Taste better if it is warm or room temperature. All of us enjoyed it, and reserving for tomorrow but we were too full from eating dinner. Then ate small bites of other pastries. 4.7/5. I would definitely go for this ube pop tart because the ube halaya is the real thing, not overly sweet, creamy, had the real ube taste from a tuber and maybe a little more flavoring from the Butterfly brand ube flavoring. So good!
The strawberries and lemon bostock is a croissant slice filled with custard, sliced strawberries and some lemon zest dusted with powdered sugar. This is an American-inspired flavor which tasted like a french toast to me. It was light, fresh strawberries, refreshing and light dessert. 4/5/5.
Calamansi Cooler with Lemon Poppyseed Almond Tea Cake - this is sliced like a pound cake but it is very light in texture, soft, moist. The textures of the poppyseeds, and a light, refreshing lemon zesty taste, slightly sweet and the Calamansi Swiss Buttercream added another level of citrus to the cake. Everyone's tastebuds got excited and this is one of the best tea cakes I ate. You got to wash it down with a cup of hot tea, coffee, hot chocolate, milk or anything beverage. So good! 4.6/5.
I would definitely come back at the Newark Farmer's Market to get more pastries. I would buy their ube pop tart, calamansi almond tea cake and maybe try out more pastries and croissants from them. They have a brick and mortar shop in Daly City, CA where they sell pies, tarts, tea cakes and other baked goods that have Filipino-inspired flavors. Check out their instagram, FB, twitter for more info and updates on what's going on and what kind of baked goods they have more in store for those who love these flavors.
Their bakeshop has a well-balanced of flavors, not too sweet and can definitely taste the flavors of the Philippines with their expertise on Vennoisserie = croissants, danishes and other Western baked goods. So worth it to either order from their Daly City store, or go to their pop-up events, and the Newark or San Mateo Farmer's Market. Thank you for opening a bakeshop! I will come back again for more! read more
