I finally got to try this Fremont staple for the first time after everyone and their moms recommended it. Immediately upon entry, you can see the huge display of neatly arranged donuts, malasadas, and pastries and they all look amazing! So many flavors to choose from that it was a little overwhelming. As others have said, the price point is around $5.50 per piece so have that in mind going in. Ordering was simple enough and servers were kind and patient. Parking is maximum 3 hours and there are some tables and chairs outside to sit and enjoy your goodies. Overall, I think I'm still going to stay loyal to Doughweime in Union City, but these malasadas do live up to the hype. Everything bagel malasada: Surprisingly really good, a light cream cheese filling with everything bagel seasoning on the outside. I made a big ol trek for this one on a workday, as I did a little donut run for my coworkers and I. The shop is pretty small with no seating available but the staff are super kind. They do sell out of flavors, so if you're looking for some of their popular flavors, I'd recommend going early or preordering. I've tried a couple of their donuts and one of their savory pastries and this is my ranking: 1) Tiramisu 2) Kimchi spam puff 3) Cookies n cream 4) Vanilla cream 5) Churro Dulce de leche The tiramisu was a friend's recommendation and it was DELICIOUS. I didn't know it was a filled ring donut prior to buy it but it was a nice surprise! I only wish I'd gotten more than one. The kimchi spam puff was flaky, salty, with a hint of spice that really woke me up in the morning. I personally wish the cookies n cream was a little more vanilla with cookies forward, but it felt a little more chocolate forward. The vanilla cream was pretty standard, so I would say that it's a good basic staple if you're not sure what to get. Churro was my last pick, but it was still a very good donut. I was in the area with a friend yesterday so we decided to stop by as I had this place bookmarked. There's street parking (2 hour limit) in front but there's also a lot in the back. We both found parking easily when we arrived. There are so many good choices here; all of the donut flavors looked really good! It was definitely hard to choose, but I ultimately went with a Pistachio Cream, a Guava Cheesecake, and a Chocolate Hazelnut. All of the donuts were soft and fluffy. The Pistachio Cream was a cream-filled donut with sugar sprinkled on the outside. The cream was really good and the amount was perfect. The Guava Cheesecake had a guava glaze and biscuits on top. There was also a cream layer on the inside. Although I don't usually go for guava desserts, this was good. The Chocolate Hazelnut was more simple and didn't have a filling like the other two. I also got to try the Tiramisu and Black Sesame that my friend got. The Tiramisu was similar to the Guava Cheesecake in that it had the cream layer on the inside. The Tiramisu was delicious. I am a victim of gourmet donuts, and Bun Appetit is the reason why I'm a believer now. While the place is very small, there's plenty of donut options! They do run out, so if you want a specific flavor it's probably best to stop by in the morning. Service is always quick and staff are friendly here. I always leave with 6 donuts. Definitely a sweet treat that's worth splurging on every now and then, as they have very unique flavor combos, and some of your more traditional flavors. We tried the filled pistachio donut and passionfruit donut. The pistachio filled bun was great, not overly sweet, which I enjoyed. You definitely receive a taste of the rich pistachio butter/cream, and it balances well with the airiness of the actual bread. My personal favorite was the passionfruit donut, because you REALLY taste the passionfruit. Definitely premium donuts sourced with real ingredients, and you can tell with each bite. Just when I thought I had lost all my bun appetit after this beloved donut shop closed, I was very happy to discover that a new Bun Appetit had reopened with a modern aesthetic. Getting there does take a little effort. It's located in a newly built plaza off a busy street, and the parking is limited and shared with nearby businesses and residents, so pulling in and out can be a bit of a mission. That said, once I got inside, my usual foodie dysmorphia kicked in immediately. My eyes are famously bigger than my stomach, and despite telling myself I was going to practice self-control, I somehow left with an impressive selection of pastries and donuts. In a rare act of generosity, I shared them with my family, and they loved them so much that my mom was already asking for the shop name to keep in mind for later. The real standout, though, was a savory puff pastry that caught my eye. It had a kimchi-type filling with something else mixed in, and the closest comparison I can think of is a sausage roll--but better. It was flaky, flavorful, and honestly beyond phenomenal. These are simply delightful! There are not many places in Fremont that can truly hold their own with the bakeries in the bigger cities of the bay. Bun Appetit is on the level and not to be missed. The lemon blueberry was insane... perfect balance, fresh, not overly sweet, just dialed in. We tried the Blackberry Dubai and it was super good, and the Ultimate Avocado Toast is definitely my new favorite. We usually get the Chocolate Cream and Spam pastries too, and they never miss. I'll start by saying that I did enjoy the flavors of the donuts I got - matcha, uba and guava cheesecake. They have a lot of different flavors to choose from, and I think there are some seasonal ones as well. However, for over $5 a donut, it was very pricey and I mostly disliked that prices were not displayed so you have no idea how much it costs until you pay. While I enjoyed the flavors, particularly the matcha and ube (guava was good but a bit too heavy on the cheesecake flavor for me), I'm not sure the donut exterior made it worth it. It wasn't bad, but also not mindblowing. Also the line was only like 4 people long but there was only a single cashier, so the ordering and paying part was a bottleneck of the experience. Other pastry shops will have someone help with selection and then you only go to the cashier when you are finished and ready to pay. Additionally, they are still disallowing dine-in, so it was solely a to-go place only. For donuts, it was probably fine overall, but would be nice to enjoy a coffee or something alongside the treats like most pastry shops. All in all, I wouldn't rush out of my way to come back, especially at the price point, but if I was in the area and craving donuts, I might give them another try. read more
