In my opinion, this 85 Degrees C Bakery in Newark, CA is still one of the better bakeries around here and much better than South Bay Area locations. I remembered visiting on their very first grand opening a long time ago before the chain expanded to other locations. Good cashier service and pastries are always fully stocked here. Area is clean and modern. Cakes are all good looking at decent prices. I can't say the same about other locations though. This one is spacious with tables and chairs inside. Wide varieties of options to choose from. I stopped by for my regular iced cold Tiger boba latte medium size cup for $4.90. Note: my cup looked very small compared to what I'm used to getting. Did the medium sized cups shrink? The lady probably used the wrong cup size, but I'm having a good morning, so not sweating about it. However, I can easily buy beautiful and delicious slices of cakes for around or under $5 each. No lines and no crowds after 10am on a Thursday morning. Staff was helpful at front counter. The place is still much better than other retail spaces. It's a good feeling inside. I'm glad I was able to make another quick stop here. I had to drive to Newark to get two strawberry drinks so I can collect their limited edition magnets since the Fremont location ran out of all strawberry drinks. They even had more fresh pastries and options available than in Fremont. The kiosk was easy to order and you can scan the your rewards from the 85C app to collect more points. It took about 15 minutes to wait for my order. I got the Strawberry sea salt tea and strawberry matcha latte with oat milk alternative (no extra charge). The matcha wasn't strong but the sea salt one had more tea flavor which I liked since it's less sweet. The barista was kind to show me all the limited edition magnets to pick from. They're all so cute, but I had to choose one per two drinks. Definitely worth coming back to this original location even though it's a bit of a drive. read more

The service had been consistent and good. I came to this location for many years. Recently, I surprised that my order came out to be unsatisfactory. The bread selection was not as good as before. When they first opened, the bread was awesome. Sometime around mid 2025, it all went downhill. The quality went down and the lines disappeared. I now avoid this place like the plague. Why? The taro bun's bread now tastes like Ranch 99 bread. It doesn't have the same rich aroma and tastes like ordinary flour with no buttery taste. It sorta looks the same but it's somewhat bland now. I also tried my favorite brioche bread. Somehow the top sweet crust is now more distinct when it blended in well into the bread before. The bread itself is not as buttery and a bit 'off'. Even with a recipe. you can make a vastly different product. Perhaps less care in the measurements, or perhaps they reduced cost and cut corners. Where is the chef!? Maybe when they initially opened, they brought in their corporate chef trainers and over time, the trainees lost their way. Chefs leave and the trained chefs trains the new trainees. Telephone effect where each generation looses more of the secret mojo. Edit: With the comment from the business manager, I hope this place gets back to how it used to be. Ambience: The place has seating like a cafe but the glare from the parking lot is a bit unwelcoming. It feels cold and could use some decoration to make it feel warm and inviting. read more

The overall taste was decent, not amazing, but not bad either. Personally, I preferred the savory options over the sweet ones. One of the savory items really stood out to me--it was my favorite from the batch. The pastries were okay, but nothing particularly memorable. The milk tea here is solid and consistent, with a price under $5 which keeps me coming. They make their milk tea with "a non dairy creamer" for my lactose intolerant friends-- but staff were unable to explain what the creamer was actually made of, FYI. I appreciate that I can order my drink with "no sugar" as a healthier alternative, and my drink is always ready faster than it takes to lap the baked goods section. As for parking, I can usually get a spot in the lot, but keep in mind this location is right next to a super crowded all-you-can-eat buffet, with people pouring off the walkway, waiting for their table. read more

Very bad attitude shown by the lady making the hot drinks today. Feb 19th around 6 PM. We ordered our drinks and had picked no whip on them. The lady making them proceeded to add whip, and since we noticed we told her to skip the whip on the second drink. We were okay with her adding it in the first one by mistake but said that to ensure she didn't add to the second drink also. She did not acknowledge but the next instant dumped the drink out and proceeded to make another one and then with the most sullen expression on her face, came and placed the drinks for us to take them. Very passive aggressive attitude. Extremely customer unfriendly. Decadent and delicious cakes! We've ordered from here on food delivery apps but this was our first time visiting the location. The bakery has a nice vibe and a good amount of sit-down space. The staff were really friendly, and offered suggestions when asked for recommendations. We got the Opera Cake and Lemon Cake slices. The Opera cake ticks all the boxes of a good chocolate cake; LOVE IT!!! The Lemon cake was a surprising win too! It's got thin layers of vanilla cake with a light lemon flavor and cream. It does not taste like artificial lemon flavoring (you know that chemical lemon dishwashing liquid kinda smell and flavor!). I'll be back to try their coffees and other cake flavors. There's parking available, but you'll have to park a little further away and walk. Went for the first time to buy a birthday cake after visiting the local PB bakery and not finding what my friend wanted. I purchased the mango Brule cake and we were not disappointed. The cake was as delicious as was elegant looking. The average price of cakes was about $12 cheaper than the other bakery, so I was even happier. The counter person was very nice and included a happy birthday chocolate to place on the cake. I didn't have a chance to try their coffee or look at the pastries. Next time when I have more time. It's been quite a while since my last review of this 85 Degree location, but it's also located further away from us and also it was shut down for some time. This time we were driving up to the city and figured we'd stop by for some treats before our show. I was surprised that it was finally open again so we stopped by to get a drink and some pastries. The parking situation here is still a mess and it's still rough to find one as it's next door to the Newark Buffet which is super popular. They have large parking lots, just expect to park further away and walk. It wasn't super busy inside. I don't think any location ever yells "Fresh Bread" anymore. But perhaps that's due to COVID. Everything was nice and shiny and clean here which was quite a departure from a long time ago as well as other locations. Every shelf was stocked which is great. We got a sea salt caramel coffee. We didn't have high expectations as it's been a while where we've been at an 85 degrees and the drinks felt made right. But to our surprise, there was someone new, learning how to make the drinks and our drink was surprisingly not bad. Good job new guy! We also tried their new bread here which was the ube bread. I'm a little biased in terms of ube breads. I did appreciate the cookie layer on top, but the filling felt a little too small for the size of the bread. Also the filling flavor was a bit lost in the whole pastry. But if you like not super sweet ube filling, then this is it! I probably won't get this again but it's nice to see that shops are now showing that ube and taro are different. Overall, I feel like their hiatus has given them a nice break to make things better. This is my childhood bakery!! My family loves to come in here to order a coffee, enjoy some pastries, especially in the summertime. The staff are always super friendly, and the shop has a nice open atmosphere!! The mango creme brulee cake tastes just like mango pudding- sooo good!! Red velvet cake was also fluffy and light. I went in here like at 0800 ish in the morning to buy a cake at the time it was pretty empty but there were still people there i was surprised. I bought the Ube flavor cake and omg it was delicious ube cake was a new thing to me so i didn't know how i was going to feel but overall great experience. I enjoyed the fruits ontop of the cake which make a great addition to the ube flavor. I was having a rough morning and they made it better. It's funny that 85 is all the rage in the States (or at least in CA) when it's not super popular in Taiwan, where it's from. But I digress. The baked goods here are fairly standard, but I like to come here for the cakes and occasionally drinks. The boba here is cheaper than most other boba spots these days, and they do a nice combination of tea and milk. I often pick up goodies here for friends' birthdays, as they sell cake slices and dessert cups at reasonable prices, and there's something for everybody. It also never gets super crowded here, which is nice if you actually want to sit down and enjoy your dessert. I love coming here to see all the bakery items! So far I have tried 7 different pastries/ breads, all of which were delicious, sweet and fluffy bread. I want to try different ones too, but then I still love the cheese bread, mango bun, coconut one, lemon broiche etc., its hard not to get those too! My favorite is the cheese bread, it sounds simple but the cream cheese inside paired with soft bread is to die for, I could so many of these. I think the only one I felt was "OK" and likely wouldn't get again was the ham and cheese. They had plenty of stock of everything for coming by at 4:30 PM, I was pleasantly surprised they were still restocking and not winding down. Anytime I'm here on this side of the bay area, I enjoy visiting this place as a treat. The variety of breads and pastries is beyond any others that I've seen at other bakeries. I also appreciate that they have drinks, both cold and warm, to be paired with any food that you may purchase. My older brother and sis-in-law loves 85° Bakery Cafe period. We drove there only 3.8 miles where we were dining for lunch. I just opted for a hot Taro Lavender Salt Latte. It rates a 5 star to me. I didn't try any dessert but I get buy a moon cake with 1 yolk. It was good but quite pricy for $4.05 each and it was pretty small. Service was very good and the staff weee very friendly. Ambiance was casual and there's a few seats inside and very well kept in the dining area. Ample parking in their parking lot. Not a very busy mall. Ordered the mango strawberry smoothie off their Mango 50% off special, one of three drinks on discount. I ended up waiting about 10 minutes for this one drink, which would be fine if they were busy. Instead, I watched them wait until everyone else was gone and they had no orders before starting on mine. Then proceeded to ask around for how to make it. 3-4 employees making drinks, all giggling and taking their time while I was the only one there. When I picked up the drink and mentioned the long wait time, the employee just said "yeah, I see that." No apology. Cashier on the bakery side was nice and quick. DISGUSTING!!! Bought bread toast yesterday 12/24. Today upon prepping for breakfast, found mold in bread. Looked over the bread and saw that the sell by date was 12/23. This sounds ridiculous to me that the store didn't discard them on time, and still allow the customer to purchase without warning. I use to love this place so much. Mocha bread with walnuts!!!
