Super solid new add to the area. Huge Mexican grocery store that is well lit, clean and super stocked. I've been to a few other Chavez Markets like in Hayward and none of those are this large and spacious. They are definitely expanding and upping their game. What 99 Ranch is doing for Asian grocery, Chavez for this area is following suit. So this took over a much older building, which is why they have so much space now. The aisles here are crazy wide (which I love), wider than American grocery stores like Safeway. Everything is so stocked and lined up neatly, very regimented. The Produce Area was actually much smaller than what I was anticipating. Artegeas which is a much smaller and older market just across the street has a more impressive produce section. But they do have all the basics here, and to most I'm sure that's enough. Pricing just meh from my obsy. Food Maxx has a better produce section for Mexican dishes than here and probably better pricing. But I will still get produce here if I am already shopping here, so not a deal breaker. The Meat Section is the most impressive section here. Nothing is pre-wrapped in styrofoam trays, everything has to go through a meat clerk. The most variety on thin sliced meats I've ever seen. Different cuts of beef, pork even chicken. Some marinaded already, some plain for you to do you. I knew Mexicans loved their thin sliced meats, but this totally confirmed it for me. Lol Great chicken, pork and beef selections. No steaks or anything but lots of things to be either grilled quickly (thin cut meats) or things to be cooked long and slow. Lots of offal too, which perked my interest big time. They even have a huge taqueria in here, which I'm sure half these reviews will be on, even though this is a grocery listing. There should be a different listing for that taqueria as it'll clutter their listing. In my experiences I've never had good food at a taqueria that is inside a grocery store. It just seems more generic to me, like they don't have a whole lot of passion behind it, versus a business who relies on their food. Not sure if I'll ever try this prepared food here, but it is a pretty impressive space, even with a nice seating area that is nicer than most taquerias. I just love the grandness of this project, so big, so clean and so close to me. Being an avid cook of many cultures, I think I may be more stoked that this is here, than all the Mexicans in the parking lot at Home Depot next door are. This review is solely for the Taqueria: my first time there. I ordered a sope with pastor the works $7.54 or so. When making my sope, they weighed the amount of meat, I'm OG, just slap a spoonful or two...make it worth the cost! Pastor was bland, no flavor or spices, lots of unnecessary crema and a bit of salsa in which my niece had to ask they add more salsa. I recommend you skip this Taqueria and just go to Arteagas or La Humadera. Was not worth a foto, certainly not the price. read more

First time here. So happy to have a Mexican Supermarket near by. There is so much to choose from. Fresh produce, fresh meats and fish. They have a great selection of Pan Dulce. I bought some beef tamales, refried beans and homemade salsa for New Year's breakfast with my eggs. They are great deli where you can get a hot dinner to eat there or take out. I had their chili Rellaños combo. Freshly made Chili Rellaños with refried beans and Rice Colorado. They have everything for a great Mexican meal. Brand new Chavez at Newark. I tried the carne asada torta (not pictured). The carne asada was flavorful and tender. The enchilada plate was disappointing. The worker put sauce on the plate. Rolled 3 tortillas with meet and then put sauce over and put it in the microwave. Not traditional at all. Wouldn't order it again. The carne asada fires were decent. The fries were a bit soggy but the carne asada was good. Wished the fries were crispier. Overall the stabs out for me was the carne asada. I will get the torta again. read more

Came by excited to try their hot food area. Ordered a burrito and a plate of fried plantains with sour cream and beans. The burrito was cold, rice, beans and meat was all cold. They are skimpy on the meat too, it was more rice than meat. However, the plantain plate was pretty good. Some of the store items are overpriced but it is a clean well kept store since it's new. Also got a bag full of pan dulce and it's okay. Nothing to rave about. The bread is a solid 7/10. read more

Have been here twice and am so glad that Newark finally has one. I'm originally from Hayward and absolutely loved the Chavez off of Tennyson so when I heard we were getting one in Newark I knew this would be my go to place. In general the store is very big and spread out. The aisles are wide, the store is bright and nicely organized. The taqueria is to the right as you walk in. It's very clean and open. We've order both times from the taqueria and they've made the food exactly how we like it. They are a little slower then the other taqueria but we totally understand they are still trying to get the routine of things. read more

Great new location. A little small compared to other Chavez Markets, BUT it's clean, easy to access, large seafood/meat department. It's nice to have this location around the corner from home. My wife and I had lunch here Saturday and the food was excellent! I had a regular carne asada burrito and my wife had her favorite, the chicken tamales lunch plate. We shared a large watermelon agua fresca, also delicious. Service was very friendly and appreciated! Meat department has an excellent selection and I'll be back for oxtail later this week. I love the fresh sweet breads as well. I'm a sucker for Conchas! Oh, and the Chavez house brand of tortillas both thick and regular, chips, and Pico de Gallo are all delicious as well! March 5, 2026 Just ate at the Chavez restaurant taqueria. We had their beef, chicken and cheese enchiladas, rice and beans. The enchiladas were the size of taquitos with approximately 1 spoon of meat and cheese. The sauce was very sweet. The enchiladas were cold even though they were microwaved.
