Move in day to Capital Loft and we grabbed a carry out. Brand new and the fired pizza was excellent. We purchased three and they were all great. Pepperoni, spinach and a margarita. Went to La Lanterna the other night for an event. We tried a variety of the pizzas on the menu and a few of their summer cocktails. Excellent all around! Loved everything we ordered. Started with some merlot and the chopped salad, YUM. Shrimp pizza with goat cheese, YUM. So fresh, handmade, stone fired... amazing. This is such a cool place! Went last weekend. I feel it's this awesome mix between modern and old school NJ Italian with the booths but yet fresh updated look! I went here for the first time for a bachelorette party at 8:30 on a Saturday night. We had made a reservation for 15, but they only had us down for 10 for some reason. They quickly accommodated and we were all able to sit and order drinks. This place is small, but if you can get in, DO IT. They were very accommodating about making sure we all had separate checks (since what a pain it would be to get 1 check for 15 girls)! I split a salad, pizza, and pasta with 2 other girls. The waitress gave us great service and even split our salad onto 3 plates for us. The food was awesome. We got some kind of pasta that had a brownish sauce, ground beef, and a breast of chicken (kind of like chicken parm?). So delicious. Came in here the other day for lunch and started out with the calamari - it was so good (just like at Da Eduardo) and it was a pretty huge portion too. Then I got the tris di pasta, which was great too. Perfect size portions of each pasta - and that ravioli is amazing! Next time I think I might get a whole entree of that ravioli. We did not have a bad experience overall, the staff was absolutely lovely and nice. But in the end you go to restaurant for the food, not the friendly people (otherwise you would go to church or whole food). The appetizers we had were overly heavy and greasy (artichoke and calamari). The pizza, not a hit; uncooked and tasteless dough. I had the primavera and some of the vegetables were still loaded with water (artichoke hearts from the can probably). And a bad quality greasy cheese on top. My wife got cacio e pepe. Which was more a cacio e pepe e pepe e more pepe. Absolutely loaded with big chunks of pepper. And a bad quality parmesan cheese. We have been to Italy. That's not how it's made. The rest neither. Thank god our waiters were some if the nicest I have had this year to save the night. read more

Hands down, my favorite pizza place in Downtown Detroit. I've been known to be a pizza snob to many of my friends, it being my favorite food (see my "about me"). Many places have failed to reach my high standards, especially when you find yourself downtown, but La Lanterna has managed to surpass. I believe the key to good pizza is offering ingenuity alongside familiarity. The service was marginal, at best. The restaurant was mostly empty, yet we sat for 10 minutes without menus. The restaurant was colder than an icebox, despite multiple requests to make it more reasonable, which made the entire experience miserable. Additionally, I had to refill my own drink at the bar. My friend and I came to visit Detroit for the auto show and of course all the walking had us hungry, since we love pizza we decided to try this place pizza was great as well as the customer service. Great food, but the staff is unprofessional. Was in there last weekend and was very disappointed with how the staff was behaving. One of the waitresses was on her phone and eating a whole pizza behind the bar while there were customers sitting there. Everyone in the kitchen was loud and the servers were as well behind the kitchen counter area. Also, everyone was on the there phone as well. One of the employees kicked down a box of supplies down the stairs which made a loud noise. When we were leaving our waitress came to wipe our table as were putting our coats on and the best was to see her just wipe all of the crumbs from the table onto the floor. The food was really good, but when you see the staff behaving like that because the owner(s) were not there then it's disappointing to see. Came here for the calamari as I was told the same family who owns this restaurant owned the Foxtown Grille that had my favorite calamari before they closed, and they serve the same stuff. Went for lunch with my dad and everything was fine...to start. We waited 20 minutes for the appetizer. It was awesome, loved the calamari, worth the wait. Then 10 minutes later out comes my pasta (pasta trio) which was good. My dad was told his pizza would be right out. Fast forward 30 minutes and there are new people all around us, all who ordered pizzas, and all who received their food and were eating. Still nothing for my dad. At that point we had to go because it was only our lunch break and so he asked them to cancel it. They then brought it out another 5 minutes later with a to-go box. They gave some big excuse about online ordering being busy and not being able to keep up with the dining room (which is already super small???) but everyone in there sat and ordered the same way we did, after we did. REALLY disappointed with the service and empty apologies we got from staff/manager. Better Italian food with better service and a better ambiance can be found in Corktown at Ottava Via. read more

Awful service. Dirty glasses. There are many other choices in the area...choose to avoid this place until they get their act together. After a long wait to be acknowledged and to.order, the obviously inexperienced waiter served my husband's meal and said mine would be out soon. Never checked back. Never asked if we wanted more drinks. After 15 minutes and my husband was completely finished I asked the man who brought more water if I could speak with a manager. The manager was sitting at a nearby table socializing...where she had been since she seated us. When I explained that I never got my food she apologized and asked if I wanted a complimentary dessert. Odd. I declined and said that I'd rather just have my chicken to go if the kitchen had it ready. She came out with my chicken in a carry out container and said it was there all along and the cooks were wondering whose it was since it had been sitting there for so long. Overall, the service was bad, but the management was to blame. In her apology she explained that the server was new. Well how about monitoring him a little closer instead of sitting at a table socializing? Also, there was some dude in a tie who greeted us when we arrived and one would think he was a manager or owner. Why wouldn't he be attentive to a new server? Why wouldn't someone in the kitchen raise hell about a dish unserved? Husband's lasagna was pretty good, but it didn't come with any vegetables or a salad. Tasted the chicken when I got home. It was bland and dry (maybe from sitting so long?). Drinks.are overpriced and serbed in dirty glasses. My white wine was served in a weird dessert wine glass and I thought about telling the sever if he came back to see if I wanted another (he didn't), but in my spare time with no food or drink, I looked over at the "clean" glasses at the bar and with the sunlight coming through the windows behind them I could see they all had fingerprints all over and several still had lipstick marks on them. La Lanterna was fine. The service was good. The accoustics were a little challenging for conversation. The food was o.k-not bad, not great. We ordered several appetizers to share at our table, meatballs, sausage and peppers, and calamari (which the server said was the best ever). The calamari-not the best ever but the batter was light, tempura style and I liked the banana pepplers and peppers with it. I do think the best calamari does not include batter. The meatballs fine and the sausage o.k. I split my husband a chopped salad and a lasagna-I knew because beschamel was in the description that I would not be able to eat a whole order. The chopped salad-fine, but not a chopped salad-I expect a chopped salad to have similar size chop on all components of the salad or at least close to that. This salad was all over the place with chop size and did not have enough toppings to lettuce ratio. The lasagna-it said bolognese in the description which I expected to be ground beef but it was very salty sausage. Again, not bad, just fine and very heavy-I ended up eating half of half and giving the rest to my husband. Our server was very personable and fun. I enjoyed our evening but probably would not choose for dinner again. read more

My wife and I had our first date 50 years ago at the original location of La Lanterna so when we heard that it had reopened under the same family's ownership across the street from the original location, we had to try it out. We were very warmly received by the staff, including the hostess, server, and manager. We ordered a Margherita pizza and washed it down with a glass of excellent wine. My wife proclaimed it the best Margherita pizza she had ever eaten. The crust was just the right thickness, neither too thin nor too thick, and the tomato sauce included chunks of ripe tomatoes. We will definitely go back to try some of the other dishes. We were there on a weekday just after the lunch hour rush, but the restaurant was almost full to capacity, so our opinion must be shared by many others as well. If you're visiting Detroit, try to avoid this place. We were a group of 8 who came to La Lanterna because of the seemingly good reviews on Yelp and other websites. We were told that they don't do reservations for anyone under than 10, that the wait would take 20-45 minutes, and that one of us would have to be in the restaurant when a table opened up. This was no problem -- I decided to wait after telling the manager we would take 2 tables of 4 if that was a shorter wait. After a couple minutes, she told me she could stick 4 people at the pizza bar, and two pairs away from the rest of us, so that we would be completely separated from one another. No big deal! We obliged and sat down, and I was at the pizza bar. On the menus, they say that tables larger than 6 would have to split checks 3 ways. However, the server came to tell us that she would not be able to split the check at the bar 4 ways despite all of us sitting in completely different areas with completely different servers. I attempted to negotiate because we were from different areas of the country and this was an extreme inconvenience for us, and she said she would let us know what she could do. She was very nice about the entire situation. However, the manager came and was very unprofessional. She was 'offended' that we felt like we needed separate checks in the first place. She continued to say that she did us a favor by giving us our seats that 'we could've waited longer for,' and it was as if it was the four of us deliberately arguing with her. She talked to us as if we were toddlers who 'didn't understand restaurant policy.' Nevertheless, we negotiated and she agreed on getting 2 separate checks. Onto the food -- Olive Garden is better than this place. We waited an hour for our food, while everyone who ordered after us got ours waited only 15 to 20 minutes. My friend's lasagna was cold and had a pool of slightly melted cheese with two flimsy pasta slices she couldn't eat (i had to give her some of my food). My other friends pizza fell apart because it had a soggy pool of water in the middle of the pizza, and my friend took one bite and stopped eating. My pasta was okay, but it tasted like a bland tomato sauce with bad noodles. The same manager heard us talking about the food to each other and decided to come over and watch us eat it, so we picked at our food silently. We asked the others what they thought of their food, and they thought it was mediocre as well. We left hungry, angry, and even passed by CVS to get cereal before returning to our hotel. From the other 1 star yelp reviews the manager replied to, I can tell that she is very defensive about the food and how the restaurant is run, but I know what good food tastes like, and this is definitely not it. Met a friend for dinner at this location since its the ONLY Da Edoardo location with a menu that has vegan options. I was looking forward to it since there were a number of options noted as vegan on the menu. When I went to order, the server said they were out of vegan cheese for pizzas and the few vegan pasta options either had cream sauce or cheese that they could not omit. The server then asked if I "could eat clams." When I expressed my disappointment, the server said the vegan cheese is "hard to find." The server ended up having to talk to the chef to make a "special" dish of olive oil and pasta that I could have had at home. I'm disappointed with the false advertising. If you're out of vegan cheese, there's a Whole Foods less than a mile away. Don't advertise vegan options if they don't actually exist. That's why I don't frequent any of the Grosse Pointe locations either. read more
