I didn't have much of an appetite due to the heat, so I just ordered an appetizer- Parma ham and melon. I enjoyed the salty sweet combo. A local tried to steer us away from this place as a "tourist trap" in the Galleria mall in Milan. I suppose that may be true only in the sense that it is a bit pricey given its location. We are just too tired and hungry to walk any farther. We were not disappointed. The food was very good and the menu was extensive. The service was very attentive, and we enjoyed our meal. This would be my favorite in the Galleria. They have the most extensive menu and with unique offerings in this area. Carbonara is a Roman dish, but they uniquely serve it here (which might be against the law). I'm talking about the one made with crispy Guancale (pork cheek bacon), crushed peppercorns, Pecorino, and yolks (and not the pseudo-carbonara monstrosity that has ham and green peas). There's a whole roast chicken. Enough said. Locals eat here, giving it a community vibe amidst the touristy surroundings. The service is good. read more

This was by far the worst restaurant experience I've ever had -- not just in Milan, but anywhere in the world. From the moment we sat down, the service was unbelievably rude. There were four of us, and we simply asked for water, wine, and some bread with butter or olive oil to start. The waitress refused, repeatedly and very rudely, saying he would not bring anything -- not even water -- until we ordered all four full meals right away. We hadn't even had a chance to look at the menu, and she wouldn't give us silverware, bread, or even water. The tone and attitude were shockingly disrespectful. When we tried to explain politely, he just became even more aggressive, and the manager was no better, equally rude and dismissive. I have never been treated like this at any restaurant. If this is how they treat paying customers, they don't deserve a single euro. Do NOT waste your money here. Honestly, you'd have a far better experience at McDonald's than being insulted by this staff. Save yourself the frustration and go literally anywhere else. Centered in Milan right by the Duomo, there are a number of restaurants available. I came here on my own and was disappointed with food. I ordered one of the regional specials: ossobucco and risotto Milanese. The ossobucco meat wasn't great with chunks of fat and chewy bits and tasted really bland. The restaurant looked like old school Italian mixed with modern vibes. I was greeted immediately and was sat immediately. My server was nice, it was busy so it took a little long for things to come. I started with a Negroni (very, very, very strong), I got the Cesar salad, carbonara, and the fried seafood plate. The food was extremely delicious. Our first dinner in Italy and we are a little jet lagged and weary ... walked by the beautiful outdoor seating in this restaurant near the Duomo and saw all of the patrons having a great time. Friendly server found us the last table outside and we were charmed. It was HOT in Milan in late May, even in the latter evening. We started with the refreshing Aperol spritz, the perfect antidote to the heat. Keeping our food choices on the lighter side, we opted for a salmon salad and mixed seafood dish. We also had to try the classic risotto Milanese with saffron, which was a small portion and cooked perfectly al dente. We did not need dessert, but tried one anyone and finished the meal with a perfect espresso. Service was superbly friendly throughout. We had a SPECTACULAR meal at the cat place. As a vegetarian and your typical white girl soup whore, you KNOW that I just about lost my shit when I found out that minestrone originates from Lombardy. You also know that I absolutely had to get my hands on the stuff while I was here. What might surprise you is that it is surprisingly difficult to find minestrone. I went through so many restaurant's menus and spent an inappropriate amount of time looking for it until I came across this place. They also have a bunch of other Milanese and Italian specialties so for a tourist, it's absolutely perfect. Even better, it's spank in the center of all the tourist shit in Milan. We had thoroughly enjoyed an aperitivo prior to our arrival so we came on the later side and there was a line waiting to be seated. The line moved much more quickly than I expected. We were seated half inside and half inside so I like to think best of both worlds. Honestly, we were just happy to get a table. We ordered wine to start, of course. I can't for the life of me remember what GF ordered but I took over most of the ordering for the table. I started with the minestrone which was warm, cozy, filled with veggies, and delicious. I stayed the course with the Milanese classics and moved onto risotto alla Milanese for the second round. This was OUT OF THIS WORLD. It's so simple with the seasonings and you don't even need anything other than rice and that incredible flavor. We HAD to have pizza so we ordered a margherita. The wine and the drinks from aperitivo were hitting hard at this point so I can't remember specifics but I do remember enjoying it. For dessert, we ordered a panna cotta which was pure heaven. This was one of the best meals I've had and probably the best meal of our time in Milan. It's a great place to try some of the classics of the region. read more

Having heard very good things about La Locanda del Gatto Rosso, I decided to give them a try, while looking for gluten-free pasta in central Milan, located on Via Foscolo, at Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, I did find this place quite hard to find, the front of the store lacks distinguishable features and branding, probably to stick in with the high-end nature and beauty of the galleria, but in the end, I did manage to find it... but I rather wish I didn't. Starting off, the food here is pretty pricey, but this was expected due to being in Central Milan, minutes away from Duomo, as a part of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II nonetheless. The coperto alone for two people was 9 euros! The staff were not too friendly nor attentive either. No one checked in and asked how the food was, nor did they ensure my water was fully replenished on a hot summer's day. For my food, I ordered a spaghetti carbonara made gluten-free, the pasta was actually pretty good but it was ruined by salt, I'm not sure if the parmesan cheese sprinkled on top, or the sauce caused this, but the pasta was so salty and it was almost inedible, it was a shame too as everything else (the pasta, the sauce) was great, and the dish would have been perfect without the salt, the pasta was nice/fresh, but the salt made it almost inedible. The meat was slightly overcooked and a little chewy though. I did appreciate them stocking a form of gluten-free cracker, so I was able to eat at the start of my meal, with my friend who ordered bread. Again, it was nothing special, but at least it was an offer. My guest commented that she did really enjoy her pasta, she mentioned her sauce was so much better, she opted for the Bolognese and based on her compliments for the dish, I wish I did too! The cleanliness of the place was good, and the vibes inside the galleria are immaculate, if you're going to be visiting Milan and want something quick and easy to eat in the city centre, be sure to check out the galleria, but if you have any choice, you might want to avoid La Locanda del Gatto Rosso. 2* read more

The pizza was good but it's difficult to mess up pizza. But when you do mess it up, don't do it in city center of Milan. Glad to say that this restaurant makes a good pizza. We like that the kitchen brought out our "shared pizza"on two different plates. The Osso Buco was a major let down. We prefer our veal shank not to be covered in sauce. Reason for only 4 stars is because the €4 Coperto and expensive drinks. A cappuccino shouldn't cost €5. I've found cheaper at other restaurants in the touristy area. The prices are on the higher end and there is a 4 Euro cover charge on top of that. Caffe is 3.50 Euros a cup - too expensive for Italian standards. If you are in Milan and have more time to research, I would skip this place altogether and look for a less touristic restaurant. read more

Located dead center of an area that has all the ingredients to become a tourist trap restaurant I typically avoid, I've discovered this establishment due to its surprisingly high and distinguished rating on Yelp. Crowds seem to like it, including Italians, so let's check it out. So was my logic. On the New Years Day, the restaurant was packed with people while many establishments weren't even open. Walking inside, you feel the energy of the place. It's unpretentious, somewhat touristy and bottles of wine are flowing like water from a well. The decor has some elements of a trattoria, like the wine bottles filling the walls. Yet, it's undoubtedly a Ristorante. It was particularly interesting to see the wine bottles next to the stairs, many of which are quite old and appear to have been collecting dust for some time. The cat decorations all over the place were nice also. Starting off with mussel soup, I was impressed. It was bursting with flavor, a little lemony and mussels were spectacular. My girlfriend had the tomato soup, which was delicious as well. Moving on to the main course, I had to try Osso Bucco with risotto Milanese. If you leave Milan without eating this dish, I'd be disappointed. The veal shanks were fine, although a bit tougher than I would have liked. Looks like they didn't cook them quite long enough and cut some corners. The bone marrow was well preserved and was delicious, so make sure not to leave it in the bone. It can be easy to miss. Vegetable and wine broth was pleasant, not overpowering. Going into the Milanese specialty, Risotto Milanese, was cooked just the right amount and was a substantial improvement over the risotto I had a day earlier. The sauce was wonderful. I felt it was a good bit over salted however, but noticed that this was the case with multiple Milanese restaurants in Duomo area (perhaps a taste preference I don't know about?) Meal aside, the vibe is good enough for a date. Noisy and fun, but not overwhelmingly loud to the point you can't hear one another. Cat pictures on the walls really cracked me up, folks really do love cats in this spot. The wine selection is priced fairly for the most part, Peppoli Chianti was my choice for the mixture of meat and seafood that was about to come and worked out quite well on the palette. With kind servers, energetic vibes and a touch of elegance, this establishment is not a bad place for meal if you prefer to stay in the center. read more

Great Location within Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, adjacent to Duomo OK, you are paying for the iconic location within the Galleria Vittoria Emanuele and for the proximity to Milan's great cathedral and to La Scala. It's much like dining next to the skating rink at Rockefeller Center in New York or in Covent Garden, London. I doubt this place is high on the dining list of Milanese locals and the clientele seemed to consist of tourists with deep pockets. But the food is good, and the people watching is very entertaining. When we finally were able to flag him down again, he was upset we didn't want to order more food. This is THE worst tourist trap ever! I should have known better, right near the Duomo and inside that popular shopping area. I ordered a pasta dish 25 euro plus 20 for truffles and I finished it in what 6 forks?! The truffles were nice but the pasta and sauce was very mediocre. Most irking is to be still starving after 45 euros on one dish that I can get somewhere else for half the price, more quantity AND quality ....mannnnnn....it just.... it just motivated me to post about it! This is for a visit back in October. I've actually been here four times or so but this is the first review I've written. You can scour and walk around to find something else but I actually think this is such a great place. Located within the arcade of the galleria, this Italian eatery is a classic at best. I don't usually feel like a tourist when I'm here even though it is dead center in a very touristy area. All of the meals I've had have been delicious. The waiters are very friendly and helpful. We like to sit a little towards the outside patio for people watching. In the past I've ordered several courses, by myself, much to the joy of the waiters. These items included the mixed salad, carbonara pasta, and cheese pizza plus dessert which at the time was a peach crème brûlée. This visit we opted for the spaghetti and clams and another cheese pizza, very simple yet delicious items. The bread basket is a star on its own. I would definitely come back and suggest to others as this is just a five minute walk from the Duomo. I love the little truffles that they give at the end. You should also ask for the pepper oil for your pizza which will blow your mind. read more

I forgot to do my research beforehand, and honestly all the restaurants looked the same to me, but I lucked out going to Gatto Rosso on a whim with my friend. The atmosphere was very nice and a little dateish (kind of like out of a movie). The staff were also very friendly and helpful with their recommendations- I could tell they were definitely used to serving tourists. First we got a big bowl of different types of bread- bring on the carbs! Olive bread, cheese bread, bread that I didn't even recognize, it was all good. I happily munched on this while I waited for my entree: the lasagna bolognese. DELICIOUS. Can I ever go back to Stouffer's after this? Perfect balance of meat, cheese, and noodle, and the portion was not too conservative at all considering I was expecting your typical European 2-bite size. Overall I was pretty happy with my meal. My friend got tomato soup and this cold fish salad that she was not so happy with unfortunately. I guess I lucked out! And even better, the lasagna was only 12 euros I think? The prices in general were not so bad for a restaurant right in the galleria aka tourist hot spot. If this is your first time in the area, you should definitely come for dinner! read more

I'm surprised at the negative reviews and the lower rating! I had the carbonara here and it was the best carbonara I've ever had, and I don't think I've had that crappy of pasta dishes. The extra fee you're charged per person (I think it was 3-4 euros?) is normal in some Italian restaurants. Just don't leave tip, because THATS your tip. I deducted one star because we asked the waiter if tip was included, but of course he said no...haha we won't be fooled again!
