Shabu Amalfi - Strawberry and sushi? Why not?!

Shabu Amalfi

OMG OMG OMG literally the best sushi of my life...in Italy!…read more First saw this place upon entering Amalfi after walking through the pedestrian tunnel from Atrani. I thought Japanese fusion was definitely odd for the area, but we figured why not and gave it a try. Best decision ever. It's pretty reasonable in prices, especially for the fresh quality of the food. The place is very cute and low-lit - perfect for a date night. Starters: miso soup Entrees: 4 rolls of uramaki sushi (dragon roll, tuna with amalfi lemon zest, shrimp tempura/kiwi, and another with tuna/philly cream cheese/potato chip) Desserts: oreo cheesecake in a jar WOW. I was absolutely blown out of the water by this sushi. All of the fish was incredibly fresh and the toppings were so unique. Plus, the rolls were executed flawlessly. We both agreed, however, that the philly cream cheese/potato chip one was the best. The potato chip was HOMEMADE - like each roll had an individually golden fried chip on top. The combination of salty, crunchy and creamy was to-die-for. The miso soup was really good, as were those addicting cheesecakes in jars. After we left, we were so mad we didn't order 1 or 2 more rolls of sushi, they were that good. I will forever reminisce about this sushi and hold all other sushi to this standard.

It's off the Main Street and was away from the crowds and noise of all the tourists. The staff were super nice and greeted us right away. We ordered 4 different rolls and all of them were fantastic. We're from Los Angeles so our standards are somewhat high on good sushi. This place gave us a nice break from the crowds and spaghetti while providing some really impressive sushi rolls. Definitely would recommend.

Glad I did cause it had options I like. (calamari, french fries, fried mozzarella balls)! (And for travelers, be forewarned. When they say calamari it's full on tentacle and the other pieces. So if you're expecting just circular pieces, don't.) I love each individually and got all in one place! They should put it on the menu permanently. There are a couple stools and tables to sit outside. The ladies serving me were nice and funny. I had to give it 3 stars cause the calamari wasn't very hot and the mozzarella balls were just that, mozzarella balls where they were fried but they weren't hot and the ball didn't melt at all. Only the outside seemed to be cooked perfectly. Besides the fries, which were great, everything else was just kinda luke-warm. All in all it wasn't bad and I'd probably try other ones if I was there. There were 5 other people that were eating there and they all seemed to really love what they were having! It's kinda off the beaten path (you have to take the path to Piazza dei Dogi to get to it). There is another place in Piazza Duomo that people went to but I don't recall seeing as many options.

This was the best meal we had on our recent Italy trip!…read more While the restaurant doesn't offer a seaside view, we sat in the atrium with a lovely evening light and heaters. We started with an amuse-bouche (compliments of the chef), which was a parmesan cracker with ricotta. We shared two appetizers among the four of us - a tuna carpaccio in citrus fruit and poached eggs with black truffle. The poached egg came in a sauce that was totally delicious and mop-able with bread. The tuna was fantastic and very light. For the main, our table split the pasta stuffed with burrata and black truffle and the risotto with red shrimp in lemon sauce. Absolutely incredible! The risotto was soooo refreshing and light and cooked perfectly. The truffle pasta was full umami flavor and a flavor party. We ended with delicious desserts, my husband got the hazelnut coffee which he loved and I got a lemon assortment. This had a lemon cream brulee sort of preparation which I loved. The wines here were also fantastic and the service prompt and great!

They don't have anything marked GF on their menu but the server walked me through what I could have. My friend and I started with the La Caprese and they provided me with a GF baguette. For my entree I had the zucchini GF pasta. The pasta was good but the sauce was a bit overwhelming. It wasn't my favorite. My friend ordered the La Genovese with GF pasta and it was really enjoyable. They only had 1 GF dessert so we opted to get the lemon sorbet. They also brought out a few GF candies as well. Overall the service and views were really nice but I wasn't a fan of my entree.

With only an hour to spare, we were hoping for a quick but authentic Italian meal, and Royal delivered. The service was impressively fast, which is exactly what we needed. I ordered the eggplant Parmesan, and I can confidently say it was the best I've had in a very long time--rich, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. I honestly wanted to lick the plate clean to savor every last bite. My boyfriend went with the lasagna and thought it was tasty and satisfying, though it didn't quite steal the show like my dish did. Each meal came with a simple but fresh bag of bread, which turned out to be perfect for soaking up the remaining sauce--no drop left behind! For drinks, I tried a limoncello spritz--refreshing but a little more bitter than I expected. I forgot it wasn't supposed to be sweet, so it didn't wow me. My boyfriend gave it a try and wasn't a fan at all--he quickly swapped it out for a classic Coke. The restaurant itself is quite small, so most seating is outdoors, which actually worked in our favor. Sitting outside gave us a chance to enjoy the scenery, people-watch, and map out our next move: a trip to the gelato place directly across the way. Bottom Line: If you're short on time but craving quality Italian food with a side of Amalfi charm, Royal Restaurant is a solid pick. Go for the eggplant Parmesan and the people-watching; maybe skip the limoncello spritz if you're expecting something sweet.

We walked over from the dock and we were the first to arrive for lunch. We were promptly seated and served bread with dipping oil and vinegar as well as sparkling and still water. Of course I ordered the frutti di mare and it was phenomenal. My brother took it upon himself to order the huge seafood bisque...we also ordered a couple bottles of wine for the table and I had a Hugo Spritz. It was really amazing. The view was unbelievable. A first to leave a negative review, but this experience deserves one…read more We visited Lido Azzurro based on a recommendation while spending several days on the Amalfi Coast. Up until this meal, every restaurant we had visited was excellent. This was, without question, the most disappointing dining experience of our trip. I have traveled extensively around the world and have enjoyed incredible food as well as meals that simply weren't my favorite. Even when I haven't loved a dish, I've usually finished it. This was different. I ordered the grilled seafood, which included king prawns and squid. I didn't eat either of them because the calamari was so tough that my knife could barely cut through it. If I couldn't cut through it with a knife, why would I subject my teeth (that years of orthodontics worked so hard to perfect) to chewing it? The dish was also incredibly bland. My friend's pasta wasn't even close to al dente. It was simply not enjoyable. The food was disappointing, but what made the experience truly unacceptable was the way I was treated. When I explained why I wasn't going to continue eating my meal, the host told me that I didn't know what fresh seafood tastes like and implied I didn't understand how fresh food should be prepared. I've eaten fresh seafood in many countries, and freshness does not excuse toughness or a complete lack of seasoning. Even Ratatouille himself would have jumped into the kitchen and added some seasoning. To then ask if I wanted to order something else after dismissing my concerns felt insincere. Why would I want more food after all of our food was disgusting and clearly I do not know what fresh seafood taste like? If there were a Michelin category for bland food and poor customer service, this place might finally earn a mention. Getting to the Amalfi Coast from the United States--or from almost anywhere--isn't a quick or inexpensive trip. People save, plan, and work hard for the opportunity to experience this beautiful destination. When you finally arrive, you hope for wonderful food, warm hospitality (insert sarcasm), and memorable experiences. Unfortunately, Lido Azzurro delivered none of those. The scenery around Amalfi is breathtaking, but this restaurant was the biggest disappointment of our visit.
