Cute French cafe. I was expecting something different from this place but instead of leaving, I decided to stay and give them a try. I must say that it's really pretty and they have great pastries. The breakfast, however, was not that great or the coffee. The place is basically self serve so you take a number, have a seat, wait for your food to be brought to the table and then everything else you need to get yourself. Tried the special at La Madeleine yesterday. I was so disappointed. The three little open-faced sandwiches had very little of anything but melted cheese. The salad was simply a handful of mixed greens dumped on my plate. My daughter's quiche was rubbery and not fresh. I will definitely think twice about coming back here. The quality is definitely not the same as La Madeleines in other cities. One of the good things about being a chain is that you can usually expect consistency. Really great breakfast. The bread was the most authentic French bread you can find in El Paso. The hollandaise sauce made me holla! In all seriousness this was a fantastic breakfast. I enjoy their version of potatoes with the breakfast entre. read more

We thought an eatery with a prime location and a French name boasting a bakery would be a great place to spend an evening. Not so. The young girl at the counter stood and stared at us as we explained we had not been there before. She begrudgingly walked to a spot near the doorway and handed us menus. We ordered quickly, because she seemed to be in a hurry. She would say "Is that all? " everytime we ordered an item. Really?? Who goes to dinner and orders one sandwich? We ordered a second sandwich and again her response was "is that all?" When we ordered our drinks, she handed us glasses and didn't direct us to where the drinks could be found. The fountain drinks, tea , coffee are located in the very back. Easy to miss. I ordered the half turkey brie sandwich and lentil soup. it was a very good sandwich and so was the soup. My husband ordered a different turkey sandwich and said his was very good too. His soup a cream of mushroom was very thick. It had the thick consistency of canned cream of mushroom before it is diluted, but a had a wonderful mushroomy flavor. It was too thick to enjoy fully, so he didn't finish it. We ordered two slices of coconut cream cake. Not too impressive. It tasted pretty much like a Sarah Lee cake. We will probably go back and give it another try, but hopefully a person with better customer service will be at the counter. read more

I've always want to try this place and finally got a chance yesterday with my friend. The place is awesome, like everything from inside to outside patio and perf ambiance. Cafeteria NOT a French Café. La Madeleine is a fast food restaurant masquerading as a French Café Anyone who thinks the La Madeleine is representative of a French Café has never visited a real one. My children who live out of town wanted to send my wife to a nice birthday dinner and bought a $100 gift card to La Madeleine to cover a dinner for two at what they thought from the website was a "nice" restaurant. Upon our arrival we found it was basically a cafeteria. You order at the counter and within 5 minutes your complete meal was served on a plastic tray. Soup, Salad, entrée & desert all at once. In other words, everything was precooked and help in a warming tray until it is slopped onto your plate. Since all my food came at once I asked for some aluminum foil to cover my entrée in an attempt to keep it warm. They staff was quick to supply he foil, but never offered to keep my food warm. A real French café would have served the meal in courses like real restaurants do. If you wanted a piece of bread, napkin or flatware who had to go get it from the self-serve area that looks like the free breakfast area as a low -midrange motel. On the good side the French Onion Soup was very tasty. It would have been better if it was warm enough to actual melt the shredded cheese. Even with the aluminum foil covering my entrée by the time I finished my lukewarm soup it was too cold to eat. I found it difficult if not impossible to keep a god mood so as not to further destroy my wife's birthday night out. This place is basically a french panera. I miss panera a lot, so I loved it! :) I had the Pasta la Madeleine. It was really great! The bread that came with it was a little form, but still good! I had to updated my review for 5 stars to 4 because at our recent visit around 5pm I ordered what I normally get the chicken in the croissant with the pesto pasta and soup. The pasta did not taste good and the chicken was dry like it was cooked a day before. We use this for Sunday after Church. Morning Newspaper and Coffee w/ a treat. Lunch during the week. I use it for meetings and coffee.... w/ a treat ;-) Food is great and have not found anything that wasn't delicious. Staff is always clearing empty tables and willing to assist. It is a pleasant surprise. The patio is shaded w/ a nice breeze. Feel safe to explore the treats, I can't say they will be low in calories, but that is not why I visit there. Any location that opens at the Fountains has had really long wait lines and times. So i was happy when i was shopping around and i noticed that this place was empty. Finally i could try it for the first time after hearing how the desserts and pastries were a must here. Upon entering i could see and feel the French cafe aspect of it. The decor and the music definitely set the mood. I honestly had no idea this was a cafeteria line type restaurant so it was a bit scary to find a menu and then proceed to order. I didn't know what to try so i stuck to a sandwich and soup special. I chose the chicken pesto sandwich and a bowl of tomato basil soup. The sandwich was definitely higher quality than most with artisan bread. The chicken was shredded so it wasn't an entire chicken breast like I'm accustomed to. The soup was delicious and most importantly it was hot! I discovered the "help yourself" bread section too far into my meal but i still tried their bread slices with strawberry and blackberry jam. The jams are so deliciously sweet. You could definitely just eat bread here and die happy. At the end of the meal i had to go back for the most important part: dessert. I went with a slice of coconut cream cake which was magical. I forgot who i was and where i was the entire time i was eating that cake. It was so creamy yet fluffy. The coconut flavor was not overpowering at all and it was not overly sweet. Overall a really great meal. read more

This is for 8889 Gateway Blvd W. #1400 at the Fountains. I went there at 4:20 p.m. for a pastry and asked the waitstaff to get one from behind the display case. The lady went to the cart behind the counter to give me my pastry. I repeated myself and asked for one behind the display case PLEASE..each time I said ma'am and please. I repeated myself a third time when she continued to want to argue with me. Crazy. I could see there were gnats (and there always are) hovering around the food on the carts. I told her there were gnats...she then says on the plastic or over the plastic...does it matter when the tray above is open to the air which is why I want my items from behind the display case. She kept repeating...above or under. I kept explaining. She gave me my items with an attitude. I asked to speak to a manager and SHE IS ONE. YIKES...ARE YOU KIDDING ME THAT YOU SEE NO PROBLEMS WITH UNCOVERED FOOD AND GNATS??? I asked to speak to 'another manager" and explained the situation. Also, as I left I noticed her take the replacement pastries from the open cart (with the gnats flying around) and put them in the display case. Who knows what I just got. Buyer beware. read more

Went here at 9pm on a weeknight, right before they close. They have a pretty awesome looking menu, but I just wanted a bit of coffee and a small treat. And they have some wonderful small treats! Little two bite tarts, bigger palm sized tars, croissants, other pastries....their menu had some pretty substantial fare. Salmon, chicken...... I really like the interior as well. Lots of wood, and the place is built with partitions so it's not one big room with a bunch of tables. Kinda like a maze, but it's a good thing because you can find a nice table and have a space to yourself, but still be able to look around. The coffee was ok. It tasted pretty good. I just got decaf:) Definitely a great place to go for almost midnight snack. And, even though it was late by El Paso weeknight standards, there were lots of people walking around the area.
