I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised by the Boulder Beach Campground. We were looking…read moreto escape the already hot temperatures of Las Vegas on a Friday night in early May, 2024. Reservable campsites on cooler Mount Charleston were already taken, so we decided to go to explore Lake Mead. The campground was just minutes from Las Vegas and Henderson. The campground sites offered large sites with paved parking, picnic tables, fire pits, and close proximity to well-maintained and clean restrooms (flush toilets, sinks, running water. No showers). We were dry camping in a Class B RV -- so no hookups -- but the campground had plentiful water spigots and lots of sun to charge our solar panels. There was a mix of campers - from those tent camping to others in large RVs. What was particularly nice was that there was some vegetation -- trees which provided some shade and flowering desert bushes. Our site also had a lovely view of the lake, which was about a 20-minute walk from the campground. (We did not walk down to the beach but others reported that it's rocky). There's a Visitor's Center for the recreation area just a few miles down the street. We spoke with the knowledgable and friendly park rangers, watched a park film, picked up some literature, and bought a few souvenirs.

Just 3 miles from the Red Rock Scenic Drive & Visitor Center and about 20 miles, and a world away, from the Las Vegas strip. The conservation area features hiking, rock climbing, bike riding, horseback riding. and scenic driving (reservations required October 1-May 31, 8 am-5 pm). Be mindful of the weather. Temperatures are scorching in the summer, and the campground closes seasonally during the hottest months (June 1-August 31). All standard sites include picnic tables, grills, and fire pits. (Some, but not all, picnic tables are covered -- a welcome sight on a HOT day). There are common vault toilets, trash cans, and drinking water (but no facilities to fill water tanks or to dispose of RV waste). All sites are nonelectric. The views within the campground are of a unique and pretty desert landscape, but they are not as spectacular as the scenic drive area just a few miles away. Temperatures were hot but bearable during the day and cooled nicely at night. The price was reasonable for a standard nonelectric site. $25 camping use fee, minus $12.50 discount for senior NPS pass, plus $8 online reservation fee = $20.50 for one night. Only two small quibbles to mention. (1) The signage within the campground could be improved. We had site 42 and drove around a few times before finding it. (2) There were quite a few restrooms with vault toilets. Each building had two separate rooms with toilets -- BUT the campground locked one side on two of the restrooms that we tried so only one toilet was functional. This created a queue in the morning. We would stay here again.

You're better off just driving another 15 miles and parking in blm areas. Or just pull up and don't pay. I stayed there a few days without paying and no one questioned it once, I did this as no one else was paying. Also I would rather just did a hole to poop in then use their toilets

I wasn't able to use the shower, bathroom or laundry without having to traverse to the opposite side park each time to do so. I brought this up to management and asked for a refund, but she kept on bringing up irrelevant things that had no bearing on the situation like, I should have reserved an rv spot even though I didn't have an rv( the rv's on that side of the park had the same issue, but probably had toilets in their campers ) or I should have booked a tent site at the front of the park since I'm clairvoyant and should know instinctively that the back of the park was out of order. Bottom line is this park has no accountability, they won't admit to mistakes. This park is also impossible to navigate after dark since many of the site numbers aren't visible, often pointed in the opposite direction of travel. Simply put, you didn't offer a service I couldn't have gotten from a free rest stop, you've only provided frustration . Give me my money back.

There are zero trees so if it's hot be prepared for no shade. The swim pond was full of green algae except a small swim area but still wouldn't want to swim there. The sewer hookup is higher than the camper slab so sewer hoses will go uphill instead down. Not really a "resort" since there's nothing besides a playground and algae covered pond.

Clean sites, decent bathroom with tp Minuses: Only reason a star removed is because the camp host was no where to be found, second time coming and that was irritating because Labor Day weekend we tried to come but seemed the first come first serve sites where being held when nobody was at site but nobody was overseeing this so it was a big mess and nobody to even speak to. This time we got a spot but no camp host there again. Other minuses don't go against rating but more of my personal preferences. This is dry camping (no water) that's not a big deal normally but mount Charleston has no stores anywhere you gotta drive to sky canyon smiths to get water, wood, ice,... any other little things you might need so it's dry camping and you really need to bring lots of water if you don't want to drive into town. Again no water, no showers either. Many sites have stairs, a bit of a pain to unload and load.

They turned into the campground in front of is, and we followed them in. We noticed campsite number 2 was open. Even numbers are first come first serve. We drove through the rest of the camp site, looking for other open spots that may be better. Everything else was taken. We drove the circle back to spot 2, as the white car ahead of us was leaving. We backed in the parking spot for it, when the camp host walked across from his camper and told us that the white car in front of us just paid for the spot. It was unavailable. We were so confused. I inquired more and he doubled down and repeated that the white car that was driving on front of us, just paid him for the spot. Which was a total lie. What he didn't know was that we were following that car up the long road, long before either of us turned onto the road that led to the camp ground. The white car is a hatch black and we could clearly see two adults and 2-3 dogs in this small hatchback with zero camping gear. The dogs were all over the back seats. They drove in, drove the loop, looked around and never stopped. Never paid and never spoke to the camp host and then drove out. Oddly enough the spot # 2 was directly across from the camp hosts camper. The closest spot to him. This leaves us to wonder if it was being saved for friends or family. He lied. To add, every camp occupant puts cash in an envelope, writes all the info on it and drops it in box. That didn't happen either. He was already waiting by his camper to chase out anyone who wanted that spot. I did some checking. This is strictly prohibited. How many people got turned away because of him?
