The restaurant is now La Hacienda de Los Fernandas The decor is beautiful and the food is fantastic! Our server was very professional and kind. The only complaint was the cold air blowing on our tables and nearby tables. Two different tables next to us had their menus fly off the table when they were don't looking at them. This is a wonderful place to take someone out on a special occasion, a first date, or even a large family gathering. My husband ordered the ground beef burrito suizo and I ordered the Nacho (no meat) The food was filling and seasoned very well. We don't drink alcohol but if we did the margaritas look huge and almost everyone had one on their table! As a proud Latina, passionate home cook, and serious foodie, I'm always excited to explore restaurants that promise authentic Mexican flavors. I've driven past this place countless times, and with its festive music and traditional decor, I was hopeful. Sadly, the experience fell flat both in flavor and service. We started with the elote appetizer, which came drowning in mayonnaise completely overwhelming the corn. I ordered a frozen strawberry margarita, which arrived in a plastic cup and tasted more like melted bag slush that you get from the liquor store. Off to a rough start. For our main meals, we both went with combination platters. I even paid extra for carne asada, only to receive what looked and tasted like steamed beef not grilled, and definitely not carne asada. I tried to move on to the tamal de puerco, but the masa had a very funny taste I could get past it. The cheese enchilada was the only thing remotely decent, and even that couldn't save the plate. Rice and beans? Bland and forgettable. My partner, who isn't Latino but appreciates real Mexican food (thanks to my cooking!), barely touched his food. And sadly, the service matched the food ..disappointing. Our waiter barely checked in on us the entire time. When I asked for the check, he noticed our nearly full plates and asked if we wanted boxes. I politely said, "No, thank you we didn't enjoy the food." His response? A flat "Oh," and then he walked away. No apology, no concern just indifference. We spent almost $80, and left unsatisfied. The restaurant was full, but most of the diners seemed to be non-Latino, which makes me wonder if the food is aimed more at a watered-down version of Mexican cuisine. As someone who celebrates and respects authentic Mexican food, this experience was a big letdown. Verdict: 0/10. Flavorless food, poor service, and not at all reflective of our culture's rich and vibrant cuisine. Should have kept driving. We went here for dinner last night and ordered the steak fajitas and the pastor tacos dinner. Both enteees came with complimentary chips and salsa and soup. The chips were warm and fresh. The hot salsa was really good and the mild as well. I really enjoyed the soup with my entree. The broth was flavorful and the pasta was cooked perfectly. The service was prompt and friendly. The steak fajitas were fantastic! The pastor tacos were more on the American side and sweet. I would stick with the steak fajitas. The prices are decent and the portion size is fair. We love coming here especially for drinks. Their margaritas are decently priced and worth every penny. This is basically our go to restaurant when we are craving for some authentic Mexican food. You have to try their rice pudding for dessert as it's phenomenal! First let me tell you we wanted to sit outside and had seen they had a nice mini patio in front of the restaurant. But to our suprise while parking we see that they converted half thrir parking lot in back to a tented seating area. As soon as we got out of my car we we escorted to the outside tent no option to sit in the front area. First i want to say all thr staff was super nice our server was super nice. But here is why the 3 stars. The food was not that great and pretty expensive. Started with chips and salsa.. the chips tasted old and not very good... ordered a horchata to drink was pretty good I ordered for apps the beef Empanadas and cheese Quesadillas both were around 12 bucks each The Empanadas were slightly burnt with no real flavor.. my wife liked the Quesadillas My main dish was enchiladas in dark mole and wife had burrito.. again nothing great and side rice was old and hard. So to some it up $60 dollars before tip was not worth it.. but they stay open till 10pm and super nice so I may return just for that. read more

How have I lived in Addison for more than 10 years and never come here. In all honesty, when I was planning my cousin's birthday, I thought we were going to La Hacienda, which I never really liked, by the way. I just got them mixed up. So when we arrived and after we sat, they gave us chips and salsa. The salsa was amazing. They had a spicy one and a mild one. Both were great. I just wish the tortilla chips were a little more thin. They were too thick. We ordered guacamole. I didn't feel it was that fresh. I like when restaurants make it in front of you. They need to do that. We all had fajitas. All were amazing. The beef isn't the greatest. The chicken and shrimp were perfect. I'm very excited that I have a go to place for fajitas. Yes, it's a little costly, but I felt I was getting quality food. Omg... I am in love. I ordered Chili Rellano (apologies for my piss poor spelling). My boyfriend ordered Menudo. When I saw his soup the size of your head come out, I immediately swapped with him and went to town. It was probably one of the best soups I've ever had. Rivals with my mother's beef soup. I felt bad I was eating all of his soup so I gave it back to him and put in an order of menudo for carry out. PS. The whole time I was eating dinner there I was looking for a Menudo recipe on Pinterest. Nothing seemed liked it would come close to this place. Don't be weirded out by beef tendons. Apparently La Magdalena is owned by the same people as La Hacienda which isn't too surprising since their menus are fairly similar! The only glaring difference is the atmosphere where La Hacienda is more lively and sports bar-esque whereas La Magdalena seems more homey. We had a few different people waiting on us throughout the night but our main server, Martin, was awesome! He was extremely personable and funny which made the night even better. Service was top notch and you could tell the staff really worked with each other. Our glasses were always full and someone was always checking on us to see if we needed anything and made sure we were having a great dinner. In addition to the service, the food was very good. I ordered ground beef enchiladas and my friend had the chicken special. The food was well flavored and generous with portions so we had plenty of leftovers for the next day (success!). I also had a glass of sangria which could have used more fruit and flavor but overall wasn't bad. I'll definitely be back to La Magdalena and I can't wait for warmer weather when they open the patio! read more

Hola Amigas and Amigos, mi gusta some Mexican food por flavor! I wanted to try out La Magdalena in my local town. I've passed by it so many times, but never had a chance to check it out until recently. To park your car, you have to go around the building through an alley and into a small parking lot in the back of the building. As I walked into the place, it was as small and cozy like their parking lot. I didn't see a hostess podium, but someone did see us come in and greeted us right away. They sat us in a booth which I liked. It was pretty busy on a Saturday night, mostly family and a couple of GNO drinking the night away. It was a cute establishment, the décor had dark tall wooden chairs and tables and the lighting was dim for dinner lighting, I guess. The place had a full bar on one side and tables and booths in the other. They also had some authentic Mexican music playing in the background which got me into the mood, to eat Mexican food of course! I like when the greeter states her name and welcomed us. She got our drink orders and then we got a basket of warm crispy chips and fresh spicy salsa. Our waitress noticed I was stating the salsa was a bit spicy for me that she kindly gave me a milder one. So remember that you can ask for a milder salsa if you can't take the heat. Our meals came with a cup of chicken soup with noodles. It was good for a cold winter night. Our food was served quick, nice and hot. Hubby got the beef cheesy chimichanga made out of ground beef (a deep fried burrito). I took a piece, it was cheesy and crispy not at all oily. The beef was also flavorful and he devoured it no more sharing, lol! I would order that for me next time. It also came with rice, sour cream, guacamole and refried beans. I had a taste for steak fajitas; it came with onions and green peppers sizzling hot. The steak was soft and juicy not overly cooked, I choose warm corned tortilla vs flour tortilla. Mine also came with the same sides' guacamole, sour cream, rice and refried beans. However, I wished my steak was a bit more flavorful that I don't have to put anything on it. I thought it was kind of bland so I ended up adding salsa for taste. The rice and beans were also not as flavorful as I'd hoped for. I did like the guacamole fresh and creamy yum. Overall, it was a good experience. I will come back and try other items on the menu, just because I liked the friendly service and it's so close to the house. read more

Stopped in here for a dinner on the cheap and was able to actually do just that. I grew up going to Ken's World of Video next door where my dad let me pick out my free kids movie every time we were there and going to the old Pink Pony restaurant where now stands Walgreens. This neighborhood just brings back great memories. The food is basic Mexican. Nothing fancy, but just good food. Simple as that. The service is pretty decent and the pricing is reasonable. They give you a nice portion of food and their chips are never stale. The salsa, a bit spicy, and their "special red sauce" pretty tasty! Went for the Enchiladas Suizas and enjoyed the guac and sour cream that came with them (on the side- not on top!). I was more than pleased with the plating. There are a lot of places that do not write on their menu that guac and sour cream are included with the dish and then just slap a pile of this stuff on top of the food. This place actually writes on the menu in the description exactly what accompanies the food. I have an appreciation for this as my fiance hates sour cream and he occasionally is stuck eating food smothered in the stuff after no warning whatsoever. Thank you, writers of the La Mag menu! I am editing my review for La Magdalena. Before I gave it three stars, now I give them four. I have been to a lot of Mexican places in the Chicagoland area since my last review, and I've got to say, this place is better than all of them! The service is so friendly, and I LOVE the outdoor patio seating area. The margaritas are great- not weak like a lot of other Mexican restaurants. Also, the salsa is heads better than other places. It's fresh, and they bring you a mild type and a spicy type (I recommend the spicy!) They also give you a complimentary soup with your meal which has Mexican spices, meat, and noodles. Our food can out hot and fresh, and service was attentive the whole time. If you're feeling Mexican, I recommend La Magdalena. read more

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant. And I've tried many! Service is usually spot on, and the food never disappoints. House made salsas are spicy and delicious. Manager always stops by to check on the meal. Favorite dishes are the fajitas. You can ask for an off-menu special, "Fajitas Alambra". It's the best I've ever had anywhere! Sautéed steak, chorizo and bacon along with fajita vegetables AND pineapple. Topped with Mexican cheese. Highly recommended! Usually enjoy coming here every week or so. Shameful lack of customer respect displayed by Jose. I've been eating here for 20 years with NEVER a complaint. Last night I ordered to go. Jose was a bit rude when taking my order, but I dismissed it to him being busy. When I picked up my order, I asked if he (again Jose) had put salsa in the bag. He said yes. I asked him if he had green or mild sauce besides the side of pico de gallo that I paid for, he told me NO. Seriously. I've eaten there at least 100 times, I KNOW they have mild sauce. To add insult, when I got to my destination, there was NO SAUCE with my order. Not hot, not mild, not green. None. I called Jose to let him know this and he said YOUR WELCOME. So now, he's going to be a smart a*&? When I told him I'd place a review on Yelp, he said Good. So there you have it. Being an ignorant smart a*& to a loyal customer is a really bad idea. He cost La Mag and all of the Fernandez restaurants my business. I will certainly share this experience with at least 100 others. read more

Went here for dinner tonight with my boyfriend and we were both so please. They have a lot of outdoor seating in the front as well as the back of the building. We ordered queso fundido, chicken flautas, chiliquilles and tried a couple different drinks. All of the food came out hot and it was all very tasty.
