My husband gets meat and chicken options, I get vegetarian and fish options, and all have been great. The salads are so generous. The service is great too. Went to this place one or twice way back when it was Lashish. My dad and I came with a groupon offer but they have lunch specials along with a lunch buffet for like $6 bucks....I was very surprised as I don't see too many Middle Eastern places having a buffet so that's something I'm keen on trying. We each ordered two shawarma sandwiches/wraps. I ordered one meat (lamb) shawarma sandwich and one chicken shawarma sandwich (each for $4.69) and a plate of french fries (~$4). My dad ordered two chicken shawarma sandwiches for the same prices plus a cup of lentil soup. French fries were pretty standard but it really goes well with the sandwiches. Frankly, I like the lamb one a lot more. For those who are new, lamb is usually the default meat in this type of cuisine and as such as the combination is sublime...chicken is more of an appeal to other customers. Nevertheless, the chicken one was good. The lamb one was simply great in my opinion. Just like complementary soup in Thai restaurants or chips/salsa in Mexican restaurants, La Marsa gives complementary Pita and garlic butter as a spread/dip. It's really the quintessential item in this style of food. Really tasty but filling especially if you're dining in a small group or eat large amounts. Glancing over the menu, entree items are like 16.99 which is very pricey. Better off getting sandwiches and other items if ordering a la carte or trying their buffet. Three delicious and perfect pick up meals on Christmas Day. We ordered hummus and were given a large amount of bread, meat grape leaves, chicken shawarma with grilled vegetables and Fattoush salad, Shish Combo with rice and Fattoush, and Mjudra with Fattoush. All meals contained Garlic Spread in a separate container, dressing for salads were in a separate container, and the salads were in a good style container. Also ordered a quart of their delicious dressing to use at home. I had to call back because I forgot something. The people were so nice. The ordering was fast and efficient. They cut no corners on anything. The Mjudra was completely covered with the fried onions. The Shish Tawook (chicken) received 2 compliments; it's an item in the Shish Combo. La Marsa is always a good choice. I've been slowly trying to work my way through the menu, and I have yet to find a dish that I haven't liked. There are so many delicious dishes- options for everyone, and the food is always fresh. The service is attentive and friendly. The owner makes an appearance every now and then, and makes an effort to get to know his customers. Even after a brief hiatus from La Marsa when I was doing some heavy traveling for work, the owner recognized me when I came back several months later. Will never return here again. Ordered the shish combo for two. Two large lenti soups. When I got home I discovered that the order was wrong. Soup containers were only half full, should of received one lamb kabob, two chicken kabobs, and two meat kafta. Instead I received one of everything and a large tub of rice. It was late and i was frustrated and not worth driving back 30 min to complain. This had happened before at this location and I have complained and nothing changes. Even the couple times I would eat inside either the order would be wrong or the bill would be wrong. My daughter and I split the Vegetarian Combo, and all I can say is whoa! Absolutely everything was delicious! And there was a ton of food, so we could only eat half of it. Picture that - potential dinner for four for just $21.99! Hommous, baba ghannooj, tabbouli, two falafel, four stuffed grapeleaves, mjadra, two spinach pies, village salad, rice with almonds, those delicious loaves of bread (hollow pita), a platter of garlic butter, and pickled turnips and cucumbers. Apparently, there was a glitch in their system. Technology stuff happens all of the time. I called to discuss 4 times and the first 3 times, I was told the manager would get back with me at the then provided times. NO ONE ever reached out. Doesn't exactly show great customer service. Once I contacted them a 4th time, it was stated they now know what happened with the error, but was too busy to call me back to explain. It took all of 3 minutes to tell me it was a glitch between their system and doordash. It didn't appear that my concern was pressing or something that they wanted to address. Second time eating here! The first time I had some fabulous traditional dishes. This time I used an entertainment book coupon. I got 10 dollars off an order of 40, which I had a takeout of. It had hummus, spinach pie, baba Ghanouj, Mjadra (replaced with Fattoosh) tabbouli, grape leaves and falafel with a side of veggies and 2 lentil soups and fresh or raw veggies, which the manager brought out when the waitress argued with me that the veggies listed on the menu meant the veggie grape leaves not grape leaves and veggies, she clearly wasn't able to read her own menu, but worse was that she had the audacity to argue with me about it. The manager said he would bring out fresh veggies for us. The Fatoosh and tabouli were ok, but the rest of it was just so-so, even the falafel was boring, but at least it wasn't dry. The grape leaves and the spinach pies were too doughy and soft and the hummus and baba were just bland and boring. A solid chain, but not is good as Mezza in my opinion. The bread is solid, but not always as fresh and little to doughy for my taste. Also the garlic sauce is a little more bitter. Everything else tastes virtually the same as Mezza and all the other La Shish clones in town. They also offer an Express takeout area that allows you to avoid sitting in the restaurant waiting for food. Been coming to this location for years, back when it used to be La Shish. Now that it's called La Marsa and has been for a while, I expected some changes but not negative ones. The bread is small and not soft. The vibe with the wait staff is different and not very friendly. We ordered the falafel plate, and the inside of all the falafel patties were raw. Anyone who has half a mind knows that if the outside is a bit darker than it should be and the inside is raw, then the frying oil is way too hot. When we opened up the falafel, the consistency was raw batter. We could smell the uncooked chickpea batter. We told our server and his reply was, "that is how it's supposed to be. You want me to go fry some new ones again and see what happens? It'll be the same." Great. The best part? We had to pay for the raw falafel patties. I'm clingy when it comes to La Marsa's hummus. I need to be with it all the time, I need it to call me all the time, and compliment me all the time, and when it doesn't I cry. It's the smoothest, creamiest hummus I've encountered and they are not shy with the lemon. I tend to throw lemon-less hummus on the walls and ceiling in a child-like fit, so their hummus is kind of like a delicious pacifier that sends me into a joyful trance. And now I've just pictured a pacifier covered in hummus and you know what? It's not even gross. That's how much I love their hummus. So really, my mom should be writing this review, because 1) she's a little more mature than I and 2) she loves this place more than she loves me. But she does in fact love me, because she brings me chicken shawarma pitas all the time, and they are so good. So flavorful! A lot of shawarma tastes just like grilled chicken to me but not here. It has all the flavors I'm looking for, complete with dream hummus and the best garlic spread (competes with Bucharest in my opinion). The pita they give you with your hummus and garlic is that fluffy, pillow-y kind, always fresh out of the oven! A meal in itself. Next to the sit down restaurant they have an express, which is perfect to pick up a rush lunch. I am very disappointed. Before we went to La Marsa last night, I was thinking about how I had to write a review for it. Up until yesterday, we have had consistent good service, good food, and an enjoyable experience there. I am by no means rude to servers, even when there is a mistake. Mistakes happen - it's how the restaurant behaves after a mistake takes place that matters. I took my parents to La Marsa last night for dinner. We ordered appetizers and sat back and relaxed. We have been plenty of times and my Mom wanted to try something new - the Musaka. When it arrived, she dug in. Ate happily until she realized there was saran wrap in her food. Not a tiny piece. Not a sliver. A huge piece of rolled up saran wrap. I complained to the waiter. We were watching as he walked up to show someone and they both were laughing. I guess I didn't see what was so funny - we were sitting directly across them, so it wasn't the most professional reaction to something like that. The manager came over. But instead of apologizing immediately, he told us why it was there. He explained that the saran wrap is in the packaging. I can understand that - but why is it in my mother's plate? Why didn't you apologize? He took it away and offered to remake it but we were done. Not interested in having any more. We didn't throw a fit, we just weren't happy. Not with the server's reaction, not with how the management handled lack of concern or interest. He offered to bring us something else but we were finished. I do not know when I will be back. It will be a long time before I return. The food is good, but this service was poor. The usual manager who I see wasn't there, and if he had been, I know this would not have taken place. So I can't totally fault this place. Over all, I enjoy La Marsa but I have had better service elsewhere. read more

There are a few LaMarsa Restaurants in the Detroit Metropolitan area. This was my first visit at this establishment, but I have been to another one in Farmington Hills. This particular restaurant is much larger than the one on Middle Belt - very roomy! The waiter came and took our drink orders, no liquor and promptly brought out my tea. There were 5 of us and we ordered 2 fatoosh salads with chicken on top and one order of chicken kabob - the dinner. This was enough to feed all five of us and one person was able to take a nice doggy bag home for her husband! Delicious, absolutely no complaints at all! The server was johnny on the spot and refilled my tea a few times. After drinking so much tea I had to use the restroom facilities. Oh uh! There were two stalls in the women's restroom and I entered the one that was not handicapped. Oh darn, I should've gone to the next stall because there was no toilet paper in the one I was in, so what did I do you ask? I snuck with my pants down to the other one!!!! Disgusting. Also, it did not appear to be clean and you know what I say? If the restrooms aren't clean, what does the kitchen look like? So, I grabbed the waiter and told him that I am a Yelper and he needs to get someone in there ASAP to clean up the restroom. I rejoined my friends and I saw someone going into the restroom with a mop. So, hopefully they took care of that. I enjoyed the atmosphere, the food, and my friends. Would I return to this establishment -- absolutely. But, I don't understand why it cost us so much and there was no liquor involved! $85 including the tip for 2 chicken salads and 1 chicken kabob dinner and coffee, tea, and/or pop. We just split the bill and it came out to $17 each, which if you think of it is not bad. read more

A nice sit-down Arabic restaurant with a revamped menu from the previous La Shish ownership. The interior ambiance is warm, soothing lighting, soft Arabic music, and nice Lebanese decor. My girlfriend and I come here and begin appreciating the cuisine with the complimentary warm fluffy pita breads dipped in creamy garlic sauce. We end up getting a meal that doesn't break the bank - usually something like a chicken shawarma sandwich from the sandwich menu. Though they are a little under-filled, they are nevertheless a tasty wrap of marinated chicken strips, pickles and garlic sauce. At about $4, the chicken shawarma sandwich is an all-around winner! Another favorite, this one from the appetizer menu, is the Mediterranean chicken wings. They are really these interestingly tasty middle-eastern BBQ drumsticks that are fried up with the meat pushed up and out, making them easier and more fun to eat. So in reality they are drumsticks but being fried and sauced to deliciousness - they merit the label they are given. We also enjoy the hummous topped with lamb - at about $11 it is quite tasty, but a small portion. We were disappointed that it was just a thin shallow ring of creamy hummous with a centerpiece of about 3-4 oz. of tasty sautéed lamb pieces. It was delectable - but left us wanting more, and at $11 it did not have the bang for the buck we would have liked to see! Perhaps the portion is worse with lamb - because when we got hummous topped with chicken before, it was about 1.5x the quantity. Many times we get the bowl of lentil soup, which at about $4 for a big bowl fit to share for 2 people is a great value. The pita breads can be dipped in the lentil soup as well. The soup is made of crushed lentils and eats like a soothing warming winter soup! It's the definite choice soup in the house. All in all, we never leave La Marsa disappointed. The experience has remained untainted since the previous "La Shish" days (minus the funding to terrorist groups of course), and if you are in the Detroit suburbs anywhere near Troy, I highly recommend trying the Arabic food here. It's a memorable dining experience that won't break the bank too badly. Granted, my girlfriend and I take a more econo approach here and share soup, sandwich and appetizer to eat for $30 combined - you could expect getting big signature entrees, appetizer, soup, and drinks for about $40-50 for a couple. read more

I don't live in Michigan any longer, I now live in Texas where I can get all the Mexican food I want but perfectly cooked, delicious Middle Eastern food is impossible to find. So when I come home, we come here. I'll order take out, we eat in, it doesn't matter, we have to go to La Marsa because, it's the best. The pitas baked in the oven that come out steaming hot and perfectly cooked so we can dip them in the hummos, baba ghanoush and stuff fattoush salad in them are always a highlight. Fattoush salad can vary depending on where I go, but La Marsa has my favorite with the lettuce, tomatoes, some cucumbers, and of course that dressing that's tangy and never too oily but coats every piece of your lettuce perfectly. All I want in life is a chicken shwarma plate with that fluffy rice, hummus, the tender chicken that's NEVER dry and heaps of the garlic paste and of course, the bread. The roasted vegetables are always good, and if we're feeding a lot of people we'll add dolmas to the order and falafel too. This wonderful gem of a place hidden in the strip mall on Rochester road is by far the BEST Arabic food I ever had in the states. We loved the decor--classy, interesting, understated. Wonderful and interesting wait staff who were all so polite we were in shock. Everyone was so incredibly nice and attentive. Then the food came out....and it didn't stop coming. Fatoosh salad that I am craving still, hummus as it should be made, warm fresh pita bread, grilled chicken and lamb kebabs that were so amazing, spiced perfectly, cooked perfectly. The rice is a review in itself. I don't even like rice, but this was like some special dish with crispy nuts on top, cooked perfect. We had so much food left over we felt guilty and took it back to our hotel, but we never got to eat it because we went back the next afternoon for even more of the same and brought our whole party with us...and this time we brought a bottle some wine...which was not necessary to enjoy the meal, but we were made to feel so welcome again, it was alike a holiday. Our guests were hesitant to eat "Arabic" food--we told them to hold on and give it a try....everyone loved it! And we had 43 people show up by the end of the night, ordering soup (an amazing lentil), kebabs, rice, salad. Delicious and elegantly prepared. For a last minute, impromptu "party of 43" this place really gave us the royal treatment, then wrapped leftovers to go for the whole party. The owner was a very refined, interesting man who welcomed us and made us feel special, and part of his family. We were sad to leave, and wished so much we could bring this place back home with us. I had a fabulous lunch at La Marsa today. I was promptly seated and within a few moments my drink order taken and some delicious bread delivered. I took advantage of the lunch special of a lamb shawarma sandwich and chicken and veggie soup. The soup arrived first and was loaded with veggies and big chunks of chicken. It wasn't your typical flavor as it was seasoned with a hint of the Middle East. The sandwich came out a bit later, the meal was well paced. The shawarma was delicious. It was balanced in flavor and appropriately sized. With a drink, the meal was around $11 with tip. Given the quality of food, it was a steal. The only odd thing I noticed was that the La Marsa express restaurant and this one were separated by a big plastic drop cloth hanging between the two. I work at 16 and Dequindre and get La Marsa regularly for takeout and have eaten in the restaurant multiple times. Their pita bread is amazing and soft, which is key because hard/dry pita bread is such a turnoff. I have had their Fattoush multiple times and it is amazing. In addition, I have had the falafel, hommous, grapeleaves, shish tawook, shish kafta, lamb shawarma, and toum. I would suggest any of these to someone visiting La Marsa. Especially the grapeleaves, they are some of the better that I have had. Of the Mediterranean restaurants I frequent, this is one on my favorites because it is low key and their takeout is also quality. read more
