WOW haven't eaten that cheap in a long time! For $9.99 I ate a delicious combination plate which included a drink! Also you could substitute without an additional charge. I got skin on fried potatoes and my mom got calabacitas instead of Spanish Rice. Place was packed but service was exceptional! I've been coming here for years to get my tamale masa, fresh tortillas and their fresh fried taco and tostada shells but usually don't have time to eat. When was the last time you sneezed in a restaurant and everyone said bless you? Never, well, that's probably because you haven't been to La Mexicana -because that's how friendly not only the staff, but the patrons are! I literally followed my nose while killing time in Downtown ABQ waiting for the next Rail Runner train to La Mexciana. It did not fail me. When I walked in, I was immediately greeted by Ruth and she encouraged me to find a seat. The tables were full because a couple of people were sitting as they waited for their to-go orders, but one lady stood up to let me have a seat, and I offered to have her sit with me until her food came but then her order was up. As I took my seat, some other customers who were at the table next to me let me know that seating is precious and despite being regulars, it was the first time they were dining in. They advised me to get anything with the chile and I took that to heart. Ruth was my server (although it is a team environment) and she explained their menu and what they were known for and that they were a homemade tortilla factory. That led me to get the enchilada plate and the kitchen was nice enough to do a 2-1 split of beef and chicken along with half and half of red and green chile so that I could taste both. It was delicious. The red chile has a subtle heat after you swallow that almosts tasted like a smooth Cholula and the green just has a good kick that made me wipe my nose a few times and take a bite of the sopa, but nothing too bad to make me not want to finish my plate. Which I did. The standout on the plate was actually the beans. I wish I could learn how to make those at home or at least take a big bowl of them home! They also have a daily special that comes with a drink, but I don't eat pork, so I couldn't take advantage of it. I had a pineapple Jarrito to accompany my meal -they had 3-4 flavors as well as fountain Coke products and also bottles. I enjoyed seeing so many regulars come in and how the staff engaged with them - I also loved that you can pick up more than your meal with a few items they had such as tortillas, chicarrones, spices, etc. This should definitely be on the list for Downtown ABQ-skip the gentrified places and go here for Authentic New Mexican cuisine. If you come, remember it's a small place but that's their secret sauce, so come, be nice, be patient and be fed. read more

Definitely don't judge a book by its cover. I was just walking by the side of the stop. This place is 1932 little tiny restaurant but the food is amazing and reasonably priced. I got a chicken burrito with beans and rice for 10 bucks smothered than red sauce and came with a little dessert sopapilla the staff is so friendly and the food is so damn tasty. The pictures the green chile cheeseburger looked so delicious, I had to come try it. I must say, it was disappointing. The bun was excellent, the cheese, cheesy and yummy, the chile had heat and flavor, and the meat seemed to be quality (enough) but it lacked flavor. Let's remember that the meat is the central piece of a cheeseburger. Every bite was a greeting of green chile flavor, and while that wasn't bad, it just isn't what a cheeseburger should be. If this place could get some smoky grill flavor into this burger, they would have the best burger in the state. (Example: Sparky's in Hatch delivers a burger patty that exudes grilled smokiness, though their meat quality is a little lacking.) I sincerely hope they step it up. I would be a dedicated customer. Until then, I won't be. I don't feel I can adequately rate this place after only one visit, so I'll give it three stars, but the burger was probably between 2 and 3 stars for me. I will say I greatly respect any business that's been around for 90 years and clearly has a connection with its patrons. It was a cool place to visit! read more

I usually only order a Red chile cheese enchilada plate. This morning I felt like eating a breakfast burrito,, stopped going to Blakes because for quite awhile now the food has been inconsistent. So I decided to try a breakfast burrito from La Mexicana. I ordered what I would have ordered at Blakes, a scrambled egg,, hash browns, bacon, red Chile cheese burrito. It was made exactly like a Blakes burrito and tasted really good. My only negative comment is I think $11.00 is a little pricey. But, that won't stop me from going back. I have only been here once before today and it was a long time ago. That time the place was packed and I took the food to go and ate it on the road home so I had been wanting to come back for a long time and today I finally did. Me and my kid sat down and were greeted by a friendly waitress who took her time with us. Btw the place smelled like grandma's house if you know what I mean! My daughter even mentioned when we got down that it smelled like her grandma's kitchen. I got the same thing I got the first time I came here, the Breaking Bad burger and it was a lot bigger than I remember! Everything tasted great it was delicious. Prices were great as well $30 for two huge plates, chips, salsa and sodas! Sometimes I regret some of the places I stop at when I'm out foodieing but I left here very happy with my decision. I gave this restaurant a three-star rating because, from what I remember, their food is good. So are a lot of other local restaurants. My experience with their phone ordering process was lousy. Christmas, very busy, I get that. I called a couple of weeks before for tamales as everyone in NM does. Person took my order, didn't give me a order # or asked for payment, just told me to pick up on 12/22 or some date in that timeframe. I call a week before to verify my order and update. The person answering my call at that time was curt, short and temperamental. I asked about my order, was asked for my name/phone # and was told "ok, I'll check our 100 orders and call you back". The sarcasm was as thick as primo red chile. Then she hung up on me. I call back, this time perturbed and "cancelled" the order which was probably never logged anyway. I leave a comment on google documenting this exchange and w/in a day I get a lashing from the owner falsely claiming I demanded this and that. Why would I demand anything, I politely asked about my (non-existing) order. Reviews also work for service, respect and appreciation businesses have for their customers. My exchange w/this business left a lousy taste in my mouth. Alternatives....Abuelitas, Durans, Barelas, the person in the supermarket parking lot...much friendlier and less prickly. read more

They do have giant refrigerator units with great take home portions of cookie dough, tamales, etc. Good portions are a good size, very tasty options, and affordable prices. We made it out to the field for a bit yesterday, which is always loads of fun! Got to put on my PPE gear and see some of the guys operating that heavy machinery! It was certainly long enough to build an appetite for something good.The job site was in the down town barrio so the gears were turning on a good place to eat! Got to take advantage of the time away from the office if ya know what I mean! We knew there was a place off of Lead or Coal or something. Little mexican joint with something called the Breaking Bad Burger! We made our way on Lead, with nothing to be found, so we decided it must be on Coal. Heading in that direction, the name came back to me "La Mexican!" I screamed! That's what it's called! A few minutes later, we saw their sign! It was the start to a successful lunch outing with a few of the work fam! The decision was already made that the Breaking Bad Burger was being ordered! Mike had volunteered himself to take one on his own while Tawnya and I ordered one to share! Upon being sat an order of chips and salsa arrive to greet you. So should you need time to browse the menu, you will have something to munch on. We also order and a side of chicharrones and an ala-carte cheese enchilada with red chile. Have you heard of the Breaking Bad Burger? I never had either but another member of the work fam visited with her hubby and shared one...she had I had to try it! How glad I was to get the opportunity! Let me tell you about it. It comes with two hamburger patties atop the bun which has been lovingly toasted on the grill, which somehow finds a way to stay crispy through out the whole meal, giving you that nice fried bread taste (sooooo good!), which is still accompanies the hamburger topping of shredded lettuce, sliced pickles, sliced tomatoes a bit of mustartd. Atop the patties you will find red chile beans, bacon and chile conqueso with a fried eqq cooked to your preference on top of the mountain! (it also comes with a hefty dollop of sour cream...that should be joined with guacamole, but they do not carry at this time as the avocado is not currently in season) Alas, this mound is surrounded by a moat of crinkle fries that are fried to a golden perfection. They are perfect for dipping into the gooey goodness that is created by the chili beans and queso. You can also take a look at the pic I posted of this beast! Just know that looking alone doesn't do it justice. The breaking bad burger would have broke me good had I not shared it! Although I was sure to finish my portion! Along with that side of chicharrones! Which was puuuurrrrrfffeect! They had just the right amounts of fat and fried up just right. The pieces didn't have too much meat on them making them easy to eat, I tell you, they just melted in my mouth. Or pork fat...how I heart thee! It is safe to say that La Mexicana now currently holds to top notch for chicharrones in my book. (2nd-Mary and Tito's. 3rd-El Modelo) Two things that must be mentioned. The Ketchup was cold. Came from the fridge. Bonus! We were delighted! Who doesn't love cold ketchup with your meal! The other, probably the worst part of the experience there, the cheese in the enchilada was not melted. Womp! I didn't have it, but I thought should mention it. Boo. Nobody likes a non-melted cheese enchilada! None the less you will still get 5 stars in my book. I plan to return, so lets keep it 5 stars after the next visit as well! The place is small and easy to miss if you are not paying attention! So eyes on the road!
