Stopped by to pick up some cotija cheese for homemade elotes and decided my niece and I would give the taco counter a try. She ordered two steak tacos, and I had a lengua taco and a campechano taco. The tacos were decent, but on the smaller side for the $4-$4.50 price point and weren't particularly loaded with meat. What really stood out was the customer service. The gentleman working the register was genuinely kind and welcoming, and he even gave us complimentary tortilla chips and salsa. Great customer service always goes a long way with me and can really make a difference in the overall experience. Would I make a special trip back just for the tacos? Probably not. But if you're already shopping there and want a quick bite, they're perfectly okay-and the friendly service definitely deserves some recognition. read more

Best food in West Bend! If you have not stopped in and experienced this establishment, you certainly are missing out. After returning from San Diego, this is the first restaurant that can offer the kind of service and food quality that anyone would come to expect after living in a place of such abundance. The seating area is more than sufficient, and food can be ordered to go. The groceria is great. My personal favorites are the coconut bars and my daughter loves the tamarindo candies. This has been a bookmark for a while so while in the area I stopped over for lunch. The place is dirty and dingy looking was my first impression. The place is all La Preferida products for the most part with next to no fresh meat or veggies. The place has a small kitchen and dining room in the back. The guy working the the kitchen was not very friendly at all and most of the menu was not available because the first couple items I tried to order was not available including the meats. Basically all I could order was tacos, one steak and Al pastor on corn tortillas. I ordered one steak and one Al pastor taco on corn tortillas with onion, cilantro and cheese. First off I was the only person in the store so how they fu%k up my order is amazing because my tacos had no cheese. The tacos were super average with neither meat better than the other and cooked to a crisp with the steak full of gristle. The whole experience was not that great and I wish I would have went somewhere else while in the area. read more

I live & work in West Bend and have driven past this little hole in the wall more times than I could ever count. I totally regret having judged this book by just the cover. What an amazing locally operated little restaurant counter with some of the best mexican food I have ever experienced. The restaurant is located at the back of a small mexican grocery. There's a small dining area with about 6 tables. On our visit there was an older husband/wife manning the store and kitchen. The service was very slow, but that was ok. There are soda coolers near the dining area and it was self serve while your food is prepared. Absolutely one of the best chip/salsa combinations I've ever had. I had pork tacos and steak tacos and the meat was tender with phenomenal flavor. Each taco was filled with meat and I didn't find a single bite of gristle as is common in steak taco meat. A generous portion of rice and beans. I don't do beans, but my wife grew up on the south side of Milwaukee and she said the flavor stood up to anything she's had in the past. So sorry I've only driven by until now, but no more. A definite new stop on my list. read more

I think someone else said it- it's a hidden gem. This is a mom & pop small grocery with a fantastic diner in the back. Everything is made to order and no joke- we loved every.single. bite. We only had tacos on this visit but tried several different types: chicken, pork and steak. They were all delicious. I'd rank preference in the order listed. Rice was light and fluffy with a delicate flavor. Beans were made with black beans - rich with a subtle sweetness to them. Can't wait to come back and try more on the menu. read more

Have started to frequent this little counter service table cluster in the back of the Mexican grocer. The tacos are really solid, authentic street cart style, with double-wrapped corn tortillas, raw, diced, white onions, chopped cilantro, marinated meats, and no other unnecessary "gringo" toppings. You do have the option to add other items though, which is nice, particularly if you come with a group. The asada is my favorite, and salsas pair quite well with the meats, particularly the asada. Price is quite reasonable as well, at a little over $2/taco, so you can get a decent meal for about $6-$10, unless you have a gigantic appetite. My only complaint is that the wait times are pretty long (sometimes almost ridiculously so), and they seem to be long even when they is basically no one there. If they could expedite their service a little, I would absolutely be giving this 5 stars. read more

I ordered the Carne Asada Torta. As I waited for my sandwich, the server brought me a basket of homemade corn chips with 2 different heat level salsas; red and green. Very flavorful and not sour like some other establishments offer. When my torta arrived, I took a huge bite. Fillings spilled out everywhere. This wasn't a wimpy sandwich! Definitely plentiful. The bun was airy and light and the steak was well seasoned. Great food and my server was so polite! I will be back to try other items on their menu. read more

It's a hidden gem!!! The grocery store is a little "sketchy" looking upon walking in, although it exclusively stocks genuine Mexican ingredients (It was dark and no one there when I visited with my son the first time). However, they have a very small VERY clean (you can see it and it's probably cleaner than the kitchens of most "upscale" restaurants you've been to), open kitchen in the back (worn looking dining area with old booths from a fast food place or something, dark wood paneled walls, a few shared menus, but clean). The food is amazing!! Totally from scratch, extremely reasonably priced, prepared fresh!! They will even offer samples of new items they are considering or offer a complimentary dish to compensate for a menu item they're out of. This is a place you go to for the delicious food, not great service. Yeah, it's just a hole in the wall kind of place, but this is where the food makes up for the plain service. The chimichanga plate had two chimichangas along with rice and black beans. Great taste and decent portion. I'll be back to try more of the menu. read more

Ok. So I heard rave reviews about this place so I thought I would finally try it out. I wish I never did. We walked in to a dirty store with unused broken shelving in the front and dirty floors. We walked to the back and I had no idea how to order. A couple waiting for their food told us how to order. There was just an older couple working. The man asked us our order and was not polite when I had questions. They were out of chicken and other things I asked about on the menu. But we were still ready to order. Then he turned around and starting making food again and ignored us. We waited another 5 min or so before he came back to us. I was not expecting the wait that we had. It was almost an hour! Someone behind us got their food before us. There was only one guy and a couple in front of us. The wait was ridiculous. And then when you got your food, you couldn't even pay for it because they were the only 2 workers there. There was no one to check you out. They definitely need to clean up their place and do way better on their service. The only menu was on the wall and it was practically covered up. I had looked at the menu online but like I said they didn't have the items I originally tried to order. And the food was average according to my husband. My daughter and I did not like it at all.
