1 PM weekday dinner. Combination tamale and chili relleno. Server lacked focus requiring several repeats of requests. I had to ask for frosted mug for beer. Also had to ask for flour tortillas which were never offered. Corn tortillas, not flour, were dropped off by different person. When waitress returned with my bill, I told her that I got the wrong tortillas and didn't have them with my meal. Food was totally different than anything I've had before. Tamale was mostly cooked cornmeal with minimal meat filling and clearly not steamed in corn husks. Sauces on both entrees were very strange tasting. Not off tasting, just strange. All of the food was clearly out of a frozen package, not home made. I cooked in a real Mexican restaurant, El Paso style, in California and know what authentic Mexican food should taste like. This was not even close and would not recommend it to anyone. This is the 6th Mexican restaurant I've tried in and nearby the West Bend area and have yet to find a good one. I've read reviews on several others within 10 miles that sound equally bad. I guess I have to get some recipes online and make them myself. Too bad. read more

Ok so my wife and I were in the area and decided to give them a try. We live in Waukesha but will definitely be coming back with the family. We ordered the "Molcajete" which in Mexico is used to make salsa, but here it is used to serve a few lomo steaks, about 8 pieces of shrimp, a couple of marinated chicken breast, some chorizo, all covered in Chihuahua cheese, in a delicious salsa (not spicy) with zucchini and nopalitos (small pieces of catcus). It also came with rice, beans, quesadillas, and a salad, all some of the best we've had at a Mexican restaurant. Overall experience was mid-level. Nothing horrible-- but for a Monday night and a table of 6, you would think the staff or servers might show a bit more "welcome." I ordered a chimichanga which did not appear to be deep fried (as I have found it prepared in other Mexican restaurants.) We had to ask for a round of waters, so they brought 4 waters for the table of 6. The macho nachos were pretty good as an appetizer. Nobody at my table at all their food, nor was it so great that they wanted to take it home. read more

I recently ate lunch here with my daughter in law. Nice atmosphere and waitress was very pleasant and very attentive. The prices are very fair for amount of food you receive. Everyone we encountered was friendly. Restaurant was clean. Food was tasty and very fresh. The only complaint is my taco salad was alittle watery on the bottom. We really love Don Ramon. Today I ordered the Don Ramon style Molcajetes (my usual) but this time I asked to have the green salsa that's used in it with their mango habanero salsa. It was delicious and the presentation was the best yet. My wife and daughter had the chicken fajitas and raved about them. I noticed today that they've added some curtains and and other decorations that have made the atmosphere much warmer. So, even though I really liked this restaurant in the past it's managed to become better yet. read more

Dinner for 5, July 15th, 4:30pm Least Mexican-looking restaurant ever, outside and even more so inside. Feels like a family diner with a dozen Mexican plant pots scattered about. No bar. Not sure I've ever been to a Mexican restaurant with no bar. There are a few shelves sitting on a counter with exactly 14 bottles of booze with plenty of space between them - obviously under-stocked their tiny shelves. No Midori for the melon margarita on their menu. Waiter then brought wrong margarita (lime vs. strawberry), then brought the right margarita, in a water glass. Drink tasted more like a melting popsicle than a margarita - couldn't finish it. Dirty carpet, no music playing, fraying carpet and sloppy paint in some areas. All plates are plain white. Nachos are decent. Guacamole is a bit hot, but has no tomato or cilantro or onion or lime flavors. Just mashed avocado. Dinner: salty overall. Undercooked onions inside burrito. Lettuce is coarsely chopped not shredded, so it soaks through and is wilty. I could get through about 1/2 the plate. A waiter spilled some taco contents on the floor - two waiters and a guy in a polo shirt (who noticed the mess on the carpet) walked through it. It stayed there for easily 15 mins and was there when we left. Not sure who rated this place with 5 stars, but I assume they either have very low standards or they're friends with ownership. Average, but potential. I've gone for their lunch specials a few times, $5 Monday's-Wednesday's, and was pleased with my meals, for that. However, $3 for a soda feels a tad steep. Recently we had dinner here as a family, on their taco night. We all shared our opinions, which we all had the same thought, and felt a review was needed. The pros: The salsa was tasty, nice little kick of flavor, without being overly hot for those of us that don't like spicy. The steak was very good. The hard shells were excellent, light and crispy. Our service was as to be expected, and the rice and beans were average. Things I hope they consider addressing and perhaps take opinions on. The chicken and the beef seemed to be really lacking in flavor. The flavor was there, but not nearly enough. We compared it to having 2lbs of meat, but only had one seasoning packet for 1lbs, and trying to stretch. So close, but just not there. Also, some tacos seemed soggy, because the meat didn't seem to be drained well before being onto the tacos, especially the chicken. They were constantly dripping liquid, while eating them. With as tasty as their hard shell tacos were, this really took away from them. Perhaps this is why their meat falls short on flavor, too watery. Over all, I'd continue to enjoy their $5 lunch special days, preferably ordering steak (usually it is a small up charge but worth it). For dinner, I will have to reconsider, if the issues with their meat stays the same. read more

I was visiting here from out of state and here for an event. Our hotel had told us the Mexican food was pretty good here and we were tired and hungry from our travels. They could not have been more wrong. The service was terrible. It said online they closed at 10pm. We arrived around 8:30 and had to wait a few minutes for another person to join us. The server was annoyed we were waiting and made it clear how impatient he was to have us order. He finally told us the kitchen was closing soon-- it was just before 9. We ordered some enchiladas and tacos and a couple appetizers and everything was lukewarm and seemed like it had been heated in the microwave. I picked at my food as I was scared the meat would be in the "danger zone" temps and wanted to avoid a food borne illness. The guacamole and side of rice was what I landed on eating and avoided finishing the rest out of fear I would get sick from it. Honestly take out or qdoba would have been a better option. To make matters worse, before 9:30pm they were running the vacuum beside our table and loudly cleaning so it was difficult to relax and enjoy a meal. We felt rushed and dismissed. read more

I do not recommend this restaurant. The food was disappointing. Order the Chimichangas, which are supposed to be fried..well these were like 2 mini burritos in real watery queso cheese. the chicken/seasoning inside was something i could have made myself with products from Walmart. The only thing i can say was good on my plate was the quac. This was the first time coming here and we thought it was going to be authentic but sadly it was not. I cant say i wouldnt recommend this place because everyone has their own opinion but that is not authentic at all! I guess we will be sticking to the places we know from here on out. The place appeared clean. I went on a Tuesday, but there was no "Taco Tuesday" specials. The only staff who looked us in the eye was our young waitress. No staff smiled once. I felt bad vibes from the middle-aged woman working. Sorry I'm a white girl with blond hair and blue eyes. Just sayin' . . . I ordered a two combo meal. I think it was $12 or $14. I also ordered a Modelo beer from the tap, but they were out and I opted for a bottle. It was cold enough. As for the meal, I opted for veggies in place of the beans and rice. The veggies were good. My chosen options were a chicken taco on soft corn and a beef enchilada. The taco tasted good but fell apart in my hands and I had to eat with a fork. This can happen with soft corn, but it doesn't happen at Su Casa in Menomonee Falls or La Fuente in Wauwatosa. As for the enchilada, I only ate half of it. There was hardly any sauce or cheese. The seasoned beef tasted fatty. I will not be returning to Don Ramon's. I heard they used to be really good. I feel bad for the family that the owner passed away last year (I heard this, too, from my partner with whom I had dined). I believe it was their father. Their food was not good,flavorless not hot as it came out of microwave.After eating two forkfuls we asked our waitress why the food was bland and cool, she explained that she doesn't cook the food just serves it. She also added that she misses good Mexican food that is served at other resturants. Our waitress took our order and then never checked back in. Never got the opportunity to order another beer. I ordered the Quesadilla Supreme. It was gross. Barely even warm and cheese wasn't fully melted. We were also served food on a chipped plate. When people were clearing a table next to us, they just used a cloth to sweep the food and crumbs onto the floor. I was all set to give this place a nice review. It's nicely decorated. The chips and salsa were very good. The menu is large and varied, with many interesting and different entrees in addition to the usual Mexican fare. Before I even ordered, I was thinking I'd come back to try several. But the chicken mole sauce was disappointing. The rice and beans were good and there were plenty of boneless chicken strips in the sauce, and though the sauce had a rich chocolate taste and some hearty spice, it had an unpleasant undertaste. Something was off. Likewise with my wife's shrimp guajillo. It presented a rich red sauce, but the flavor was unpleasant. We got there after 2 on a Friday, and I asked the server right off if it was happy hour. She said yes, that medium-sized margaritas were $5 each. We ordered two. They were good. I ordered another. We finished and she brought the check, and I noticed that we had been charged $9.99 for two margaritas (not $10, for some reason), but charged $6.99 for the third. Same drink. Though the check said, "Please pay your server," she wasn't coming back to collect or to ask about the error. So finally we went up to the counter to pay. I asked the employee there about the strange charge, and she said that there was no happy hour price on Fridays, and the correct price was $6.99 per drink. I pointed out that we had asked about the price before ordering and were charged $9.99 for two drinks and $6.99 for a third of the same drink, and that didn't make sense. She got the manager. He said our server was on break. He said she made a mistake. I had to pay as charged. 1. Employees should be knowledgeable about the restaurant's offerings and prices. 2. We all make mistakes, but we are also accountable for our mistakes. Why am I accountable for her mistake? 3. And what kind of a policy is it that puts "Please Pay Server" on the checks and then allows the server to disappear on break before collecting? Food took a while to get to us, longer than most Mexican places, but was very tasty and hot. Two had seafood items, and 1 had chicken enchiladas Verde. The Verde was among the best I have ever had. If I could leave no stars I would. We looked online and tried to call before we went. No answer or voicemail. When we got there the door said 11pm on Fridays. It was 9:30pm. We walked inside and were chased back out. A man saw us and yelled at us that they were closed and escorted us back outside. What irritates me most is that they just opened this store a month ago and are already closing whenever the hell they want. I work in a restaurant. If you're going to set your hours and change them, at least answer the phone or post them on your door. Not to mention how rude the man was. I will not give the restaurant another chance. I really wanted to like this place, but after eating dinner here last night, it's safe to say we won't be back. Between all four of us, every dish looked unappetizing. I ordered the Enchiladas Poblanas... thin gross tortilla stuffed with unseasoned somewhat shredded chicken.. topped with mediocre (at best) mole and... sesame seeds????? So odd. Rice was awful. Even the chips and salsa were bad. My husband ordered a combination plate with Chile rellanos and a chimichanga. The chimichanga is baked, not fried. Another person in our group ordered a sampler plate..all dripping with grease. Margaritas were watered down. What a shame. read more

Parking lot isn't packed anymore for a reason. "NEW" factor gone. This place was amazing, GREAT " Mexican" menu selection, actual FOOD, and service when it first opened!! They even used to run out of food?! Have gone there in the last 2 months, usually walk into the staff sitting at the counter, watching TV, someone doing a quick "rug sweep". They might keep the floor tidy, but it's pretty gross sitting at a table swatting flies away and looking at the gunk on the walls nearby. Unlike when they first opened, the dishes are sloppy, unappetizing, and your server (even when the place is near empty), MIGHT stop by once to see if you need anything, then to bring you the check. It's just a shame that the place assumes they've already won their customer base and already, don't care about the decline of business. read more

Great, really great ceviche. Guacamole was perfectly spiced and chips were fresh. Al pastor pork tacos were good, lots of pork, right amount of onion. Skinny margarita was good amount of alcohol and fresh juices. Definitely coming back to try the fajitas and mole. All very fresh. Service was good. Even the chips were distinctive.
