Great treats - especially the frozen fruit bars! Ambiance is ok, but it's not like you go there for an amazing hang out spot, grab the snack and enjoy a walk through West Chicago. The service is decent too. On a crowded day, the staff can be a little aloof to new people (or at least that was our experience and frankly there was probably a little bit of a linguistic barrier for me as I'm only experienced enough at Spanish to not look like a complete idiot - though that's debatable too lol). read more

I have been in love with this ice cream chain since I stumbled on them last year while looking at Mexican restaurants. Every one has been a little different with this one being the best so far as the awesome variety goes. This one is in the corner of a strip mall and is a combo Mexican restaurant/ice cream shop like all the others that I have seen. The variety of flavors from the common like Oreo cookie to the uncommon like Tequila and everything in between is awesome. There is custom ice cream bars, cups and fresh fruit creations for endless flavor combinations but I'm a fan of the crazy good bars so the strawberry cheesecake would be my choice. The strawberry cheesecake was pretty good with bits of gram cracker crust on the inside. If you have never been to one of these stores and you like ice cream than I would tell you what the hell are you for and get your ass over to one because they are awesome. read more

Great selection--everything from mangonadas to tortas to fresas con crema, and of course ice cream and paletas. I got a fresas con crema paleta, dipped in chocolate. It was an extra .25 charge because it was a circular and not square shape (?). I thought it was weird, but whatever. It's just a quarter. Staff is nice and will let you sample the ice creams. The guy working along with her asked what I wanted I told him then he came back forgot asked again and then handed me off to her. Here's my order: Monster Preparado- she just put ice a lot of michoacan as add fruit to the bottom here I paid about 8.00 for ice lime flavor and monster Sangria Preparada- I paid about 7.00 for ice and slices of orange. Honest reviews: i am mexican and been to alot of mexican icecream places this is by far my favorite. For those of u who do not know what mexican icecream is it is ice cream with no chemicals or all that fake crap in it its all fresh nothing frozen. Then they use mexican ingredients. And they put chile in some of them. For example a paleta is mexican icecream. My favorites that ive had here is the magonada which is mango icecream with chile. Guanavana its a type of mexican fruit. Pine nut icecream. And tamarindo. and coconut. All in all everything is really fresh only problem i wish it wasnt so expensive Mangonada: i love mango so whenever i see mango icecream i have to try it. This has so much of a mango flavor weird but alot of icecreams kinda dont taste like what their advertised as or just have a lil bit of that flavor not alot. Its not supper sweet but sweet enough to be really satisfying. Then u can get the mango icecream with Chile which is why its called a mangonada u have to get it with chile. Sweet and spicy such a perfect combination. Its not like spicy like omg i need a gallon of milk spicy just a lil bit if cayenne pepper. guanabana: ik alot of people never heard of this and its hard to find fresh at the grocery store. U have to try this its so good. Its hard to describe the flavor of it just know its great. The only problem is they do not take the seeds out so be careful and spit them out because u will choke if u eat them! So be careful!!! Pine Nut ice cream: omg i love pine nuts their a lil expensive at the grocery store now so i havent bought them in a while. I never seen a pine nut icecream in my life so i decided to try it. Its so good. The flavor of the ice cream is so dynamite then u get the nutty flavor of the pine nuts which is the perfect paring. And there is so many pinenuts in it like each bite will have a bunch of them yum! I think if they toast the nuts it will taste a lil bit better. read more

They have the standard flavors, such as vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, etc. as well as not so standard flavors such as blackberry & jelly, strawberry pine nut, and a really rich cheese ice cream--that's right... CHEESE ICE CREAM. I don't remember most of the flavors but I do remember tasting all the ones that I was curious about. I was like "What's that? I wanna try it! Gimme gimme gimme! YUMMMMMM!!!" In addition to serving various flavors of ice cream in sugar cones, waffle cones, or bowls, they also make sundaes. As with their ice cream flavors, some of the syrups and toppings they offer for their sundaes are interesting and will definitely make you catch the curiosity bug. Guava, anyone? Hopefully, you have a friend or two with you so that each of you can order something different and sample each other's selection. I love the ice cream & sundaes, but my favorite item is their frozen frappuccino. I'm also partial to the smoothies & milkshakes--YUM! Now, just because this place is an ice cream shop doesn't mean they have to stick to frozen desserts. La Michoacana Ice Cream also sells corn on a stick--with or without that stinky powered cheese or red chili powder, and fruit salads in a cup, both of which remind me of items sold by food trucks & street vendors in Pilsen. My sister kept telling me I needed to come with her to this great Mexican ice cream shop. Sounded intriguing - I didn't know one existed. There are no labels on any on the ice cream flavors, and the menu on the wall is all in Spanish, but the sweet lady behind the counter pointed out every one of them for me, and gave me samples of 3 of them!! They have some interesting flavors, but I can't recall what they are because I couldn't understand her accent very well. But when she said "strawberry cheesecake" my ears perked up. They also have one thats just "cheese." Interesting. There are so many options! There's even a huge freezer filled with all sorts of homemade popsicles. But not just any popsicle - ones with whole slices of fruit in them and other foods. They also sell a few Mexican foods if you're not into ice cream. But if that's the case, why the heck'd you go to an ice cream shop? I got mine in a dish but they have waffle cones. It was really good. The only part I wasn't too thrilled about was the jelly-like red stuff the strawberries were in. The creaminess of the ice cream itself was awesome. And it's so cheap as compared to other places! You must try this place... Never been to a Mexican ice cream parlor but I am sold!!! They have many coolers of flavors that are labeled, and look fantastic! You keep looking at the coolers to make sure you have the best one! I had the watermelon which is like a cross between Italian ice and a sorbet. It has tinsy prices of watermelon in it and refreshing!! Not super sweet just right. Hubby had the Tres Maria which was a French vanilla base with yummy Mexican cookies in it! I noted in another review that I just learned about mangonadas this summer and feel like I had been deprived my ENTIRE LIFE of this delicious, magical, sweet-and-salty concoction. It was actually here, after dinner at Al Chulo, that we ventured in and discovered this amazing treat. The ladies behind the counter were super accommodating and polite, and basically let me order by pointing at pictures and mumbling incoherently. And the mangonada was FIIIIIRE. Everything amazing about a mangonada - plus another flavor of ice cream thrown in, plus a giant tajin straw that was the icing on the cake. When we went outside to eat our treats on a bench, they rushed out to tell us we were welcome to stay inside at one of the tables. So sweet. I'm not in West Chicago a lot but I will definitely be stopping by here any time I'm in the neighborhood! read more

(hey, that's what happens when there's a gem in town). I come here probably on a weekly basis. In the summer, on the daily. My favorite is the Ferrero Rocher popsicle. If you haven't tried this amazing thing, you are missing out on life. You will hear your kids crying in the background in a muffled sound, you husband trying to tell you how his day went, and here you are. Eating your delicious ice cream, not a care in the world. Completely in a daze. Continually taking those small bits of your popsicle. And chewing on crunchy pieces of ferrero rocher chocolate. The Ice creams are all made with fresh fruit and nuts. I sampled the pine nut it was so delicious and as you all know pine nuts are expensive it actually is loaded with pine nuts. They also have verity of home made pop circles some are with fresh slices of fresh fruits and my favorite are the cucumber with chile is to die foryou think of all the good fruits they have them freshly cut for you and they serve them in a cup with chile y limon yum. My favorite here is the Mexican corn on the corn on the cob on a stick with lemon, mayo, sour cream, margarine , cheese and chileyummy. This ice-cream parlor also serves Doritos in a whole new Dimension. Check this out the Doritos bag is opened side ways they put shredded Chopped cabbage picked pork skins, pico de gallo salsa, fresh avocado and sour cream boy this is a whole new meal. No signs on any of the ice creams to let you know the flavors, but the lady was cool and let us try a bunch of flavors. My friend took me here the other day and I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of it. I got mango and tequila ice cream, both of which were excellent. It tasted like I was taking tequila shots and there were pieces of mango in the mango ice cream (almonds in the tequila ice cream too). We also got hot cheetos with the nacho cheese sauce and that was surprisingly one of the best things ever. The soggier the cheeto, the better the taste. It was a spicy, gooey mess, but a very good one! I felt kind of out of place not knowing how to speak Spanish, but my friend did all of the talking and it was perfectly fine. I think if I were to go by myself, I would be understood, but the lady who worked with us struggled with English. Who cares though; the food was good and the atmosphere was really friendly. The fact that English wasn't being spoken for the most part made the who experience more authentic. Very cool! read more

I had to wait for my ice cream for over 30 minutes. We were the only ones in the building so I don't even know what the guy was doing. Also, I went here with my dad and the cashier just kept randomly showing him random things like hot chocolate mixture and told him where to buy it. He also kept giving him samples of ice cream that he didn't ask to try. When I finally got my ice cream, it was amazing although. I got the strawberry ice cream and it was so creamy and delicious! First time going here and it is amazing! Very nice workers and decent prices. They have yogurt parfaits with fresh cut fruit, if you get there in time you can see the cutting the fruit in Bite size pieces. The ice cream is very creamy and rich, so I assume it's freshly made with natural ingredients. I came with a couple friends and we all fit but there wasn't much space for more people but it was a small place. They also have elotes (corn) preparados which are really good. And some chips available with anything u wanna top them with. They make shakes with any ice cream you see available. I'm jot sure if there was anything I missed but definitely recommend this place if you're in west Chicago. read more

The ice cream is really delicious and very reasonably priced. We each got a very large scoop for $2. They also have some really unusual flavors like tequila, rose water and vanilla with raisins. The bad thing is that the flavors aren't listed anywhere and the girl we had didn't know what the flavors were. We asked if the flavors were written down anywhere and she said no. When we asked about the types of ice cream they offered she just said that we could taste any of them. She only knew about 25% of the flavors by looking at the ice cream. This place has a great product. They should really post their flavors like Baskin Robbins does and their customers might be happier and return more often. read more

I have returned here several times over the last six years, usually for the mangonada, a sorbet with pieces of sweet, juicy mango, a little fresh lime juice, and... chili powder and a spicy/sweet/sour dark-red-colored sauce that is an unusual flavor combination for most Americans, but it works well.
