I've tasted their tamales and they're good, but sometimes they are very soggy and not fully cooked, which sucks when you don't catch it before you leave. I have tried their pan dulce and it's soooooo good! Their conchas are sooooooo delicious!! I want the recipie so I can try making them! The ones I try baking do not taste as good as these! The piggy is good too! The one other bakery located in Santa Ana that made the piggys came out good but then they switched owners, the piggy never tasted the same again :-(.. this one comes close to it. Wish I knew the original recipie of the piggy as how I remember it as a kid :-( lol anyway, i'll change it to 5 stars when they stop giving me raw tamales. Other than that I do recommend it! I want to come back and have a taste of their tamales and other savory foods too. I came during the week in the morning before work to get over 2 dozen pieces for a work event and it was really busy, so make sure you give yourself enough time. This place has the WORST customer service ever....it's as if they're giving you free food! You walk in never get greeted, place your items on the counter for them to charge, still not greeted! I was craving tamales, searched Yelp, and headed over with my dad to grab a dozen for dinner and for my family to try. Ordered: 3 each of red pork, green pork, red beef, and green chili cheese Left with: 4 each red/green pork, 2 red beef, 3 green chili cheese, and some pan dulce. (When she went to check, she told me she only had 1 beef left. I added a couple more pork in place of the beef and when she came back, she gave me the dozen plus an extra beef that she didn't see the first time!) The red pork didn't stand out too much to me, but the green chili cheese and the green pork were quite tasty! The pork in the green pork was more tender than the red, too. I still haven't tried the beef or any of the pan dulce. I'll definitely be back! We got there about half an hour before closing and they had almost everything I originally ordered. The lady at the counter was quick, friendly, and efficient. When I got home, the food was warm and tasty! AND I need to go back on a weekend to try a couple other special tamales. read more

I just found out La Moderna is on Yelp. YAY! I've been coming here my entire life. I remember taking a field trip to La Moderna from Ada. S. Nelson Elementary to see them make El Pan de Muertos, this was in the early 80s. Back to the point. Once you try the pan dulce, you'll never want to go anywhere else. I've lived in Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley, and visit Mexico alot, no comparison to this pan. It is so soft and tastes fresh. I now moved back to Whittier, and my commute to work consists of me passing La Moderna, I needed to stop carrying cash so I wouldn't be tempted to stop and get a cheese tamale with a soft roll (total 1.40), perfect Mexican breakfast. I never tried the Menudo (my mom makes the best), but the line on a Sunday morning doesn't lie. If you dont have access to home made Menudo - this is the place to try. They don't have tables or chairs, it's a small place, so you need to send someone with a pot and take it home. It is family operated, so support them. Also they do have an ATM, but $5.00 is the minimum. I don't eat meat anymore, but my husband loves their chicharrones. read more

Came for the Tamales based on previous reviews. Let me start off by saying, I like my tamales like I like my men; big, juicy, and meaty. Well these tamales are not it. Red Pork are tasty but the tamales are somewhat dry and small. Didnt care for the green pork and I lean more for green tamales then red ones but here the red have more taste. Overall, the tamales are ok, not great. Dont see myself coming back. But I am glad I had the chance to try them. read more

I went here on a Sun morning around 9:30am to try the menudo.... they were sold out! Bollios were out as well! I ended up getting some pan dulce which was VERY GOOD and reasonable priced. I aslo ordered two tamales one green and one red. And when I got home, they were the wrong ones, which I read in someone else's review. Check ur tamales before u go, since they go to the back to get ur tamales and out them in a paper bag, you dont see the tamales. Also got some chicharon, which was ok, however that carnitas were BEYOND delicious!! I definitely would go back, but I feel like this place is inconsistent. I called one day around 2pm and they were sold out of carintas. It's like they make one batch of everything in the morning and that is it for the day. So if you are willing to wake up very early to get food then this is the place for u. read more

There is nothing bad I can say about this place. The menudo is delicious and a easy breakfast, especially if you are having guests over. The tamales are pretty good. The pan dulce is also really good. Customer service has always been exceptional. Only con is that it does get super busy on weekend mornings and line can be a bit long. read more

Im really a big believer of support your local businesses, that also sets priority to the businesses that have been around for years/since my childhood days & this place is on that list.....my father loves their Carnitas, they are pretty decent for this area :) & the homesade fresh salsa.mmm mm..Tamales, although my only issue is they are a little smaller than the other places, but they are tasty, I always end up getting some, because I must...Menudos oh so good!!!!!....The bolillos are always good & fresh & the crunchy hard Chicharrones are good. I love that you can go, get in and get out, they are really good & fast! They also have a small selection of mexican products. Make sure you get there early on Sundays or set your order before the holidays, they run out fast. Went there and picked up some tamales and sweetbread. Tamales were good just way too small for being $2.00 each. I would say thickness is 1/3 of an average tamale. I didn't try any sweetbread so I can't comment on it, other than it was . 75 cents each piece. I got acquainted with La Moderna during my final weeks at USC. What a huge disappointment that I wasn't introduced to it earlier. The tamales are great. Simple and delicious. The pan dulce (sweet bread) is the best I have ever had. Hands down. I brought over some of the bread and tamales to a family gathering and now whenever I come up from San Diego to visit my family they make sure that I go by La Moderna first. The lines can be long but it moves quick enough. The parking can be a little cramped too but I have always found a spot. 14.50 for a dozen tamales is a pretty darn good price too considering how great they are. read more

Puassed by here on cinco de mayo to take my coworkers some pan dulce! I usually don't buy bread so I was happy to find this bakery down the street from my house. The line was LONG. But I stayed and waited about 15 min. They have a lot of different bread from cinnamon bread to conchas...they even have the bread with cream cheese and jalapeños! Yuuumm They sell packaged tortillas, bottled drinks and when you go in for bread you go behind the counter and pick it yourself. They sell menudo on the weekend, I must come back and try it! All the bread was being made fresh, everyone who tried it said it was so soft! Employees were not too friendly, but they were busy so maybe that played a factor. I'd come back for sure. read more

Been coming here for years now and i don't know if it's just me or what but the Tamale's aren't as good as they used to be?! The Carnitas were never all that (kinda greasy) if they had a better resting place for them when they are sitting they might drain better than just sitting on foil on a tray. But than again what do i know. Bread always good no complaints there, but the last couple times i had their Tamales i just wasn't impressed. Just keeping it real... The tamales here use to be awesome!!! And for the price, nice filling and large tamales. The key word here "use" to be, for the price, I'm very surprised with what I got. The price went up and the tamales became alot smaller, just like everything else. The price here has been going up, and no problem, but for $22 for a dozen and they have become smaller, I don't know what changed but not worth the price. :-( read more

A TAMALE staple in the area. This should be known if you've done your Yelp homework. Everyone else has already said what they're good for and they're absolutely right, everything is pumped out with ease and effortness from behind that counter wall, and when you get it, you can bet everything is going to taste masa fresh... But low-key, you can find some incredible jalapeño and cream-cheese filled bread in the Pan Dulce section. Buy some of their $2 dollar beans and pour it right into the bread if you're ready for a journey into low key deliciousness.. By far the best carnitas in area and I got free salsa which is also bomb. Weekends they make awesome guacamole. Tamales are pretty good too. Only stop shop for a meal for the whole family. You will not be disappointed but get there early they run out quickly. read more

This place has gone to pots. Rude Poker Face woman with heavy make up has a chip on her shoulders. Recipes not the same. The conchas and pumpkin empanadas used to be my favorite not the same anymore, horrible now. The place is expensive The quality and Service Is down.
