Visually, we were winning. Then I take a bite and it's... lukewarm. Bestie??? Menudo is not supposed to be room temp. Asked the waitress to reheat it and she was sweet about it. Came back actually hot like it should've been from jump. Flavor did a whole 180 after that, so W. Then the bolillo saga. I asked "y'all got bolillos?" She's like "yes!" I'm like slay. What shows up? French bread that went 12 rounds with a plancha, buttered and toasted. I'm like "ma'am what is this" I asked for a non-grilled one and she hits me with "we don't have those" LMAO the whiplash. Just give me corn tortillas atp. Tortillas came, crisis averted. Wife got chile verde with eggs over easy. Eggs came out medium but we don't gatekeep, it's fine. Chile verde was tomatillo based -- not my fave but edible. Beans actually slapped. Didn't try the rice but it was giving _decent_. Bill was $43. And they still charged me for the bread I sent back??? It's giving audacity. But that's why we have Yelp. Talked to the guy next to us eating chilaquiles. They looked bussin and he said that's all he pulls up for. I should have read my review from 8 years ago. Bad, bad... Caldo soup had good flavor but lots of fatty meat. Chili Colorado (pork) was ok, beans good. Some reviews say pricing is cheap but most breakfast seems to be $16+. Service was bad from table service, to trying to on the bill, to being ignored when trying to pay at the counter. Lady walked away then didn't look at me. Hate to say it but if you don't speak Spanish you're ignored. My wife is Mexican and speaks Spanish. I have lived in Whittier for a long time & have never tried this spot. Went out for lunch today & tried it. Had the soup/salad/1/2 sandwich combo & it was so goooood!! Especially the fideo soup. I also had a michi & idk what's their mix is but it was one of the best michis I've had in a while. One could describe this place as sh*tty delicious authentic Mexican food or authentic Mexican food, without having to wait in line or for food, I guess 4pm is the perfect time to come for any meal, especially watching that silver haired fox playing solitaire on his 'notebook' wearing massive earphones like I don't know what's going on in them ears. The ladies who work here are aunties I wish I had growing up serving me exactly what's on the menu. It's all a little greasy but nothing extra, nothing missing. The best part about the breakfast, besides being served all day, is like a smartie, they melt your butter in them freshly toasted bread. The quesadilla reminded me so much of my first quesadilla made by my old English tutor from El Salvador. Greenleaf though use a much better, larger tortilla. It's exactly what I want at 4pm and 12am. No other time in between. Love the homemade chips and yummy orange Tang! Everything I want in an orange soda without the soda. Edit: 2 days later: fecal consistency is not great if not lacking. Greenleaf Cafe is now a staple in our household. Whenever I need some Mexican home cooking, this is the place I go to. On my most recent visit, I ordered the fajitas and the portion was huge! I recommend that you split this dish if you don't want leftovers. My boyfriend ordered a chicken burrito he said it was good. The restaurant definitely feels like home and it's huge! I really want to come in on a weekend to see if the other dining room gets full. I am dying to try the breakfast one of these days as the menu looks so tasty. Situated in Uptown Whittier just next to Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, this unassuming Mexican restaurant is an oldie but goodie with the locals and I'm glad I tried it. Service (3/5): The wait was a little long that day, but it seemed like there were a lot of phone orders ahead of me. Waitress was nice but messed up my order by giving me the wrong sized menudo so I had to drive back to get the correct one when I realized the mistake. It looked like the owner/manager was on first-name basis with long-time customers, which is nice to see. Food (3.5/5): Overall, it was pretty standard Mexican food. Would consider revisiting if I'm in the area. Breakdown below. * Abel's Chile Relleno Omelette (3/5): The sauce with the omelette was such comfort food. I like how the chile complimented the egg, which had an unexpected roasted flavor. The beans were good, but the rice was a little dry and hard. * Chorizo Breakfast Burrito (3/5): Flavor was good, but I personally didn't love it. The cafe was crowded, but wait was not long. I understand they have a great breakfast, particularly Mexican food. However, we were there for a nice lunch. My guests and I were underwhelmed with their sandwiches . We all thought the sandwiches were bland. They didn't seem to have any seasonings. I had a tuna melt the tuna was bland and i don't believe there was any cheese. When I asked the waitress she said there was some cheese, but I could not see it or taste it. Others at my table also thought their sandwiches were bland to the point that no one finished their food. The waitress also seemed overwhelmed as she forget or mixed up items and we had to request somethings like silverware multiple times. I know this cafe's specialty is Mexican food, but I needed to order a salad in order to do a lot of work today without slipping into a food coma. Avoid the Cobb Salad at all costs. The avocados were the best part, and the lettuce + tomatoes were fresh. But a typical Cobb has chunky chicken, which is all over their Mexican kitchen, but they make it with microscopic slivers of deli turkey. A typical Cobb has sliced boiled eggs (eggs are also all over their kitchen), but none in this salad. The bleu cheese crumbles were also few and far-inbetween. Their kitchen is also loaded with bacon for breakfasters, but I was lifting lettuce with my fork to find any bacon. What bacon I found looked like it was the artificial stuff that comes out of a shaker. The service was good, and the food was served promptly despite the cafe being loaded with people. This moved my review up from one star to two. It appears this cafe has a following of regular customers. But after this experience, I WON'T BE BACK unless if a friend invites me, and I'll try an omelette breakfast or a Mexican dish. read more

This place probably has one of my favorite breakfasts in Whittier. The parking is easy and the service is usually great. They have what I consider one of the best chorizo burritos in Whittier that's super easy to order for pickup too. Depending on when you visit, it can get a little crowded and you might have to wait. But it's usually well worth the wait. I really like consistency in terms of service and food, and I love that you know exactly what you're getting when you come here. Servers are really attentive which was good. Had the family in tow, so we ordered some chilaquilies and eggs, a small menudo, a club sandwich with fries, and the kids had french toast and eggs. First view, it looked like a lot of families and older couples. A lot of menudo's were going around, so i was eager to try it. All the food was well portioned out, but honestly lacked flavor. Even the menudo. Sorry to say it was just ok. The sauce on the chilaquiles was bland. The french toast were good, but those took a while to come out. Otherwise, overall ok. Not sure i would go back. This place said it's well known for its menudo, but I can name 3 places better. Was disappointed with everything we order not that it wasn't cooked right it all just didn't have any flavor. Had to add salt to everything from the menudo to the fries. The worst part was the taqitos, the beef was not shredded correctly so every time i took a bite half the meet came with it. There was no flavor whatsoever the they want to give you 1oz scoop of guacamole on a big ass bed of lettuce. There was no way that is enough for 4 taqitos. read more

Great friendly service with reasonable prices. As far as food, I am not too sure about it, nothing really stands out, more of a typical dinner. I was disappointed in the menudo, I have tried it in multiple locations and this version seemed like I was getting a bowl of pozole. Few pieces of tripe that are cut way too small that they get lost in all the hominy. The soup flavor is not bad, but definitely the meat ratio is off. They need to check the cooks pour.
