The chicharron isn't the best and the bean are not the best but damn...second place is good. Everything here is really good. I've been a happy customer for many years, I used to live in Norwalk, so it was a short drive when I wanted Tamales ( for the Holidays) Now I've to drive 45' mins. to get them, and I go every year, so that tells U that I love the Tamales. ( The bread is like everywhere else, low quality) For real GOOD bread, I do recommend "La Monarca, Bakery" -several locations- High quality, fine pastries. Going back to the Tamales place, all these years, I had only ONE incident, some of my tamales were RAW, we did call them right away, they did apologize. At this point, we know the employees, we know is a family BIZ, we never had another complaint, BUT we heard that complain with other customers, this happens mostly during the Holidays, I understand but is NOT acceptable, The flavor of the tamales is great when they are well cooked, and U are ready to enjoy a great dish, but the frustration of some people is a bad mark for this place, I read that is happening so often, that somebody at the Bakery should be more responsible and have a customer-oriented attitude, I don't see the Lady the started this BIZ anymore, maybe the new relatives are not well trained, but they need to improve, and stop ignoring so many complaints What we do NOW, is to place our order in early November have some that day, and the rest to the freezer. Avoiding the heavy season really works. We were a little wary, having read the reviews and planning to drive from Long Beach to get a rosca de reyes. We haven't had that yet, but we did get some pan dulce, tamales, champurrado, and menudo. The pan and champurrado was delish! I am a huge sweet tamal fan but tarnished by the best in Mexico (Don Antonios en Ags). Nothing here compares! Well, La Moderna, you have come awfully close. Your sweet tamal was yummy, LOVED the raisins and pina. Mmmm The pork tamales were good but meat was a little fatty. Hubby had the menudo and he said it was good. I would definitely give this place 4 1/2 stars on account of the very friendly service! There are not many panaderias I find that have such friendly and kind service, even owners. Been coming to this bakery since I was a little girl. Now I bring my kids too. I love the bread, menudo, tamales and carnitas. We swing by here on Sundays before the 10am football games. I also (purchase) a box from them and fill it up with pastries when my kids have potlucks at school or asked to bring something to share. It is not expensive and authentic. I have to admit the people that work here are not super friendly but that is fine. I know they are working hard and as long as they keep making my favorite pan dulce ...I will walk in and pay and be on my way. I love it! read more

Menudo is good. As was expressed before, take a pot with a good fitting cover, and buy a couple quarts. The tamales taste really good, but there is a pet peeve I have about tamales. I like to be able to take the corn husk off and eat the tamale "entero", or whole, not falling apart. L.M. doesn't allow you to do this. When they spread the masa on the husk, they go all the way across, thus when you unwrap it, it falls apart, not allowing you to enjoy the tamale whole. Other than that, if you just want a great tasting tamale, enjoy. read more

This place has ZERO, 0, integrity. I called to tell them my husband forgot to pick up our order and did they still have our tamales. They said, YES, they would hold them. They asked when will I pick them up, I said about 20 minutes. I got there in 25 minutes and they had given my order away. DO NOT USE THIS BAKERY. After reading so many reviews, and saw it was so close to my house I had to try it. All tamales were sold out (it was pretty late) so we went for the carnitas. They were absolutely AMAZING!! My son even said, he thinks these were by far the best carnitas he's ever had. Carnitas is his meat of choice at all Mexican restaurants and taco stands. Took my owe pot for menudo and all they poured was soup. No hominy no tripe!!!!!!!! Wtf!! We got ripped off!!! I would not recommend to purchase menudo here or if you do stir your pot. . read more

Been going here for like 20 years, best fricken carnitas I have ever found! People complain about the service, but the place is so popular and the only way to be efficient is to be quick and not chat too much-- though I could never accuse them of being unfriendly. The bread here is always fresh and amazing. Also the carnitas is probably the best you can find near Whittier. Only downside is nothing is probably that healthy. But who cares. Get here early on the weekends or expect to wait. The staff are extremely nice aswell! read more

This has been one of my favorite stops most mornings before heading to work for their delicious pan dulce... they've been around forever! It's a family business and has been very well run. From time to time I pick-up a large order of pan dulce and tamales to treat my office staff; they love it too. If you ever need to order more than just for yourself, be sure to place your order a day in advance or stop by really early to pick-up before the rest of the neighborhood wakes up and takes them all... they're that popular. Tamales are great, but the customer service was awful this time around. The owners son was very rude. I will never go their again. Everything was so delicious, one of those great places to eat in Whittier. Whether it's menudo tamales , or their carnitas they are yummy.

I'm giving one star not because the food is bad but because of the customer service. We've been ordering our Christmas tamales from them for the last couple of years and they are pretty good but the people that work there are actually quite rude. I ordered our tamales online this year. I placed the order on 11/29 to be picked up on 12/23. I ordered four dozen of each dozen a different kind. When we got there we were told by a very unfriendly young lady that she was out of the green pork that we ordered and if we wanted to come back in an hour they would have some made. When I asked her why my order wasn't filled since I ordered and paid almost a month ago, she said that someone in the back had miscounted and there was nothing we could do except come back in an hour or she could offer us a dozen red pork that were cold from yesterday. I asked her to just give us a refund for the dozen that they didn't have and she said they couldn't do that because I had paid through PayPal which made no sense to me, So we decided just to take the cold ones and get out of there. That's the last time I order from them. The place is jam packed so I guess they have enough business and feel they don't have to be nice or apologetic when they screw up an order. We have a year to find a new place. read more
