Omgosh, let me start by saying that this place is super cute. I went in to buy an horchata cake and I got an Horchata Cake. It was a bit pricy for my liking but it was very tasty. The girls up at the front were very nice and I was in and out quickly. Mind you I bought it back in June so I'm speaking on the personell at that time. The greatest dilemma a Mexican/Latino business has to face is how you are going to deliver quality. If you are trying to be upscale/upscaley/upscalish you will meet big criticism. You see, to look nice, you need to charge more. Then comes authenticity. To be authentic Mexican, many people think you need to be a hole in the wall. Higher cost and "no authenticity" are usually deal breakers for Mexican/Latino businesses. You might even get those that think these upscale businesses are a part of gentrification. UGH!!!! I support upscale Latino businesses like La Monarca and Jaragua (Salvadoran food)!!!! It is not a requirement that Mexican food be cheap to be good or authentic!!!! That being said, on to the food.... They used to make better Mexican Mochas or Cafe Oaxaca here. This is true of most La Monarca locations I have been to. They are OK but used to be better. The baristas seem to have a hard time making it over ice like I like it. They are better at making frapees but I don't really care for those. The baked goods are pretty good. They have exceptional cookies like the Hojarasca or the Wedding Cookies. The pan dulce is not as great as hole in the wall pan dulce BUT they try to be healthier at La Monarca. Much of their stuff is organic. La Monarca plays really cool music - Latino pop and alternative - a big plus!!!! La Monarca actually cares. They help in the fight to preserve the Monarch butterfly sanctuary in Michoacan, Mexico!!!! La Monarca is a cool place to enjoy great food!!!! What can I do without at La Monarca? The fact their Cafe Oaxaca over ice has gotten less delicious over time....one reason is they put less Mexican chocolate in it than they used to.... What stands out about La Monarca? The Oatchatta blended was not good, it didn't taste like horchata at all, and my boyfriend said it had no flavor. I agreed that it was nothing like what I had before and now I'm questioning whether or not I want to go back. I would like for there to be consistency in the flavor, I don't want some days my orders tasting amazing and other days it tasting gross, especially things that I have tried before. Ordered delivery last night through their own website. I would highly recommend NOT doing this, as there is no way to report issues which I had with my order even though they use Postmates to deliver. I made specifications that my drink order be both dairy-free and decaf. I'm on medication that makes me hypersensitive to caffeine and dairy literally makes me vomit. Upon receiving my order, I began to doubt that they made my drink dairy free or decaf because only moments later I threw my guts up whilst simultaneously having a panic attack which felt just I love the highland park location but was really dissappinted with this one. I am a student, and finding a good study spot/coffee shop is important for me. There is a Starbucks, Tierra Mia, and a La Monarca in Pico Rivera. However, I prefer going to La Monarca over those other coffee shops. La Monarca not only has a great cafe de olla, but it is also a great study spot with an amazing playlist. The cakes are also yummy; I love their guava cake. The pan dulce and food is is decent, but a bit pricey. However, my rating is based on the coffee and study environment since those are the two things I am always doing. I recommend the coffee and this study spot. read more

First of all let me say that I've been going to Monarca since they first opened in Huntington Park. Then I would go to the one in Whittier after I moved closer to that one. So I was very excited when they opened this one, a few blocks from my house. I love love their coffee and breads and some of their cakes. My favorite cake is the guayaba one, so delish! However, my last few trips here have been a disappointment. Last time, they forgot my order and we (husband and I) waited like 30 mins for 2 drinks and 1 mollete, no big deal, they had a lot of clients so I was very understanding. So I went again today and we were the only customers. One employee had prepared our drinks and left them on the counter, did not call my name to grab them, and another was preparing the mollete. By the time I had gotten the mollete (about 10 mins) the ice on the drinks had melted a lot. In all, I'm disappointed in their service skills. I'll most likely go back if I'm not in a rush, and expect the long wait. But won't be visiting as often as I usually do. read more

Came here for the first time since it opened in my neighborhood. I got a delicious mini concha and cream cheese "taco" from the self service racks. I ordered a hot molé torta with cotija cheese and an abuelita chocolate. It was delicious and I can not wait to return to try their tres leeches cake but their food and drinks were good and fresh.
