I deducted a star for the prices buts that just my opinion. I work nearby and pickup a champurrado with a bag of wedding cookies. They have a varied daily selection of pastries. Some days I walk in and they have my favorite pineapple pastries and sometimes they don't. They employees have always been courteous with me as a customer. If I get attended to promptly and accurately, I tip accordingly, usually $3 into their tip "college fund" cup. They place is always clean including the bathroom the time I used it to washy hands. Kept passing by here so decided to make a pit stop on my way into work to pick up some goodies for my staff. Parking is fairly easy. Their entrance is on the side of Mines Ave which might be confusing for first timers. Very simple and modern interior. I was contemplating between their many different flavored cakes. There were so many Mexican inspired flavors. I couldn't decide between the fresa con crema, horchata or tres leches. I ended up picking the fresa con creme (strawberry cake) to stay on the safe side. Also picked up some 3 dozen mini conchas, blended oatchata, and their yogurt parfait. The oatchata and the yogurt parfait was recommended by the cashier. Their baked pastries were self serve by the door entrance. I didn't like anything I had purchased. The conchas were stale and hard. I had purchased both the vanilla and chocolate flavor and both tasted very bland. Their blended oatchata had no flavor either other than a light cinnamon. I was afraid it was going to be too sweet like Starbucks but it was watered down and tasted more like watered down oatmilk with my shot and a light after taste of cinnamon. My yogurt parfait was okay too. Wasn't a fan of the coconut shavings but the overall fruit and yogurt was good with the granolas. The fresa cake was the best thing that I had gotten. I was expecting the sponge cake part was going to be extra dry after trying the conchas but it was moist and the strawberry buttercream wasn't overly sweet. The cake itself was beautiful. My staff appreciated it as we celebrated her birthday. Otherwise, service was good. Probably won't return other than to purchase a cake if my staff gets sick of the typical fruit/ice cream cake. read more

So, I'm on my break from work & decided to try out la monarca bakery that I've been seeing on IG for dia de los muertos. Well, I was immediately greeted by a staff person & that was a nice surprise. The cafe/bakery was so colorful, clean, spacious. I picked some mini conchas & pan de muerto & placed on my tray. Next I'm gazing at all the delish cakes behind glass counter. Staff person asks me if I'd like to try anything & I said yes~ the Mexican wedding cookie. The cookie was so good. I said to her I want a coffee but there so many to choose from. She says try our famous cafe de la olla. She handed me a sample of the coffee, it was the best- hot, cinnamony, slightly sweet. I said I want one to go. I got in my car & ate my soft pan de muerto & drank my coffee. This was the best Mexican bakery I have visited in a long time~for the epic customer service, delicious pan & best coffee. This place is a mom and pop Mexican-themed cafe that resembles Tierra Mia with Mexican-influences coffee drinks including cafe de olla. So we have been coming here regularly for a few months now and the coffee is always good. The baked goods are usually slim pickings when we get there (usually at night) which just basically means they make good stuff and people buy. Well tonight we came in and noticed that there was a really great selection of everything, well once we got closer to the case we found out why there was so much still there. It was infested with nats! Yes, nats flaying everywhere, soo.... We went to the counter and told the guy about the situation and his response was just incredible. He said "yeah, I know, they've been in there for hours." I'm sorry but that is not what a customer wants to ever hear. Now let's talk about the coffee, I ordered coffee and it took a REALLY long time to get my order. This kid must be new there, probably never had a job before. I've never seen him there. This is so unacceptable. As we sat there and drank our coffee people were coming in and going right to the bakery case, looking and then walking out. So so sad. This place is a new & revised Mexican panaderia (bakery). I especially like they have Cafe De Olla & it comes ready made brewed, ground beans or grounds in bags! They have an array of pans, pan dulce available fresh! Now they also have freshly made burritos! These burritos are great & vary on the filling. The beef & bean is my fave! All their food is freshly made; burritos warm up nicely & those Mexican Wedding Cookies! Both the Pico Rivera & Commerce stores provide great service! The dine in is nice, they bus the tables & keep a clean store. The employees are very happy & always eager to help & answer questions. My family & love this place! read more

Stopped here for a mid-afternoon snack. Grab a tray and tongs and help yourself to whatever you want from the pastry cases. Or you can choose something at the cake counter. Or perhaps order a salad or coffee at the main counter. I chose a couple pastries from the shelves: a "guava taco" and "dulce de leche empanada". I also got a latte. The woman at the register was neither friendly nor unfriendly, just all business. I sat at one of the several tables inside. The interior is sleek, modern and clean. I really like the feel of the place as well as the music selection (mellow pop). The dulce de leche pastry was good - not too sweet - and the outer shell was fresh and delicious. The guava pastry didn't meet my expectations. I thought it would have a guava filling but just had a guava paste on each end with most of the pastry being hollow. The pastry itself was crisp and delicious but I guess I was expecting more. The latte was light in flavor but smooth. I prefer a deeper, more complex flavor but this was fine to accompany an afternoon treat. Seems like this place is appreciated by most other reviewers more than me; I guess it just didn't appeal to my personal taste. read more

The food and drinks are okay. The small coffee is actually very small so if you don't want a surprise get yourself a large. The service is horrible they took an hour to get our online order ready for pickup. As a Mexican I want to eat and try Latino spots but you are better off going to Starbucks or a hipster coffee spot. read more

I've frequented the shop in past but am writing about online ordering: don't use, or call instead. Submitted order at night for pick up at 8:30 am the following morning. Received email from Martha that it would be ready. Showed up at shop and was informed the order was canceled. Didn't receive new email about cancellation. Did not receive phone call or text message about cancellation. Cancellation was made at 8:05 am and I was told they were too busy to call and to contact my bank to check on refund. I try to support local shops and luckily wasn't too far from work (I was hoping to pick up pastries for coworkers). It was an inconvenience, I was miffed (no mini conchas to share and nibble on during a Friday!) Had another customer made a special trip for goods here, that inconvenience (and the frustration) would be Tremendous. Needless to say, I walked out empty handed and sad by the experience. Do try calling customers about cancellations. Alternatively, fix the online ordering system so a new email generates when things are canceled, or the customer receives a text. It's a small and simple way to improve service. And yes I am aware I hold some responsibility, but when a "thank you for your order" email goes through; you think the order is complete and I wasn't aware I had to "View Order Details" and actively engage to watch the status of it. If you opt to order online: keep an eye on your order status. Still sad about the missing mini conchas by the dozen, that never materialized, sigh. read more

I've purchased cakes from La Monarca various times. Today, being Mother's Day, I was limited on time, so I ordered a cake online. I appreciate when small businesses offer online ordering and delivery, it's such a helpful service. I was a little disappointed when the "additional comments/instructions" section was ignored today. I simply requested a message of "Happy Mother's Day" be displayed on the cake... especially considering the different fees that are added on to the order when requesting online service with delivery. We are very happy and pleased with today's visit to Monarca. The store was clean and decorated for Dia De Los Muertos; love their little ofrenda. It's PSL season and my family and I are here for it! I ordered breakfast this morning via Postmates. I was so excited to share champurrado with my husband since he does not know much about Mexican hot drinks. The champurrado was the worse I've had. It was extremely thick and it had excessive starch which made it hard to swallow. I can only taste cinnamon. I ordered two so we were very disappointed. My husband said, oh this is a terrible drink and I agreed. We had to throw it away :( We also ordered the Machaca burrito. The burrito was tasteless and it had a lot of tater tots and the meat was fake. The chipotle bacon and egg biscuit was not tasty and the bacon was undercooked, the biscuit was dry. The Pan De Muerto was good and the conchas tasty too. Not a place for breakfast for sure. read more

This place is very small and for the second time that I go in they do not have much of a selection besides what is pre-packaged pastries. I asked the cashier why was there not much of the selection hi h we went in at about 4pm-5pm and she advised that the bakers stop backing bread at 2 pm. It did not make any sense to me since it's still fairly early and there was very limited amount of pastry available. This place is my go to for iced matcha. I got it once it was amazing and kept coming back ever since. But the last couple times they have not been making it good. Seems like they're hiring new ppl and not trained properly. But I still go back in hopes they get it right. Unfortunately today, I ordered a small matchata took a sip and it tasted like coffee. I'm not one to take drinks back but I'm not a coffee drinker. Which is why I get matcha. So I took it back, The worker said that's how the recipe is, with coffee. I told her it should only be matcha and horchata like it says on the menu. She's refused to admit she simply messed up and stuck with the recipe having coffee. Got a large round guava cake. It ended up being way too much for our team of 12 as the proportions are generous and the cake is a proper cake, not some fluffy sponge as is the trend now. The guava was fresh and paired well with the thick frosting, and the green and pink colors made it look phenomenal, especially with Monarca's classic orange box and cake tray. Im really upset. I was excited to go to this bakery and the first time I visit it's "closed". Store hours claims that they close at 9pm and when I went it was barely 6:30pm. The door wasn't even locked or no sign of being closed. Walked in and employees were sitting down. I understand if the bread is done but two and a half hours before closing time ???? 1st time coming here. No drinks. Tried the bacon breakfast burrito which was 2 thumbs down. 8 bucks for a pre-made burrito that gets warmed up. Tater tots in burritos had that been in the freezer to long taste. Bought a box of croissants which were delicious. As of now I'd recommend to sticking with baked goods and trying the drinks. New fave place to study. Just enough outlets and very cute calm environment and they have WiFi. I've only tried their iced coffees and buttermilk mini cookies and they are delicious. I have tried their Tres Leches and Cafe De Olla iced coffee. The tres leches tastes a bit more like cajeta. And the café de olla cold brew is super yummy even a little sweeter than most cold brews. The buttermilk cookies are 50 cents and so addicting. Try the vanilla chocolate chips and the hazel butter cookie. I see on their menu they offer breakfast and lunch as well so I need to return to try. Their cakes also look delicious and so many options.
