Rows of decadent desserts (cookies, cakes, churros, etc.) line both sides of the shop, as well as bottled drinks that look like champagne or sparkling cider...not quite sure, as they are in Spanish. And their coffee is only $1.50 for a large (16 oz)! They also have sandwiches in the back of the shop and empanadas somewhere behind the counter. They're not as tasty as the ones from Seba Seba on 80th Street, though. Great place to hang and chill with some sweet or savory snacks and coffee. :D read more

As a former Jackson Heights resident, I used to go to this bakery all the time. They have delicious empanadas. Their cheese empanadas are out of this world. Their other pastries and breads are also great. I went back to La Nueva 15 years later, and they are still great and exactly as it was before. I love this place! Hmm what can i say about this place besides that the cheese empenadas are to die for. I Love the fact that most of their finger food is tasty, but if you can deal with the long lines waiting to place your order and the attitude you get from the person behind the counter, then your in for a treat. The say patience is a virtue well this is definitely the place to put that to the test. I love the food here but somedays I just cant deal with the attitude from the people behind the counter. Sometimes I feel like Im bothering them by walking in and placing an order. So for the food I'll give it a three star for the attitude I give them nothing. Delicious pastries for breakfast, snacks, or dessert. The seating is a little awkward and we usually have to try to push the circular tables together so our family of 5 can eat together, but it's worth it. I highly recommend getting some of the random little pastries from the coolers that line the room - we got a dozen and ate them with glee over the course of the weekend. For breakfast, stick with the larger pastries or egg-like things, but don't leave without a few of these mini treats as well. read more

I'm a teacher and La Nueva is a family-owned business (they're from Uruguay) by one of my former students. Great people and great desserts. I bought a fruit tart and despite my boyfriend's prejudice against fruit tarts, he ate it up. They have miniature pastries available too. They're ridiculously cute and yummy. Came to this bakery expecting excellent pastries and cakes.... was not disappointed with the over-the-top pastries and cakes in the glass fridges. But nothing we purchased was fresh. The tres leches cake was mushy when it shouldn't be, but it had been sitting for (my estimate) days and the cake had absorbed all the milk. Ick. And the caramel roll tasted like grass -- I guess they use a strange-tasting coconut for it. But the cookies are the bomb! Like, over-the-top 10/10 good. Buttery, crumbly and not too sweet. Loved every cookie I tried. The place also sells sandwiches, breads and coffees. Won't go out of my way to visit but would drop in if I was in the neighborhood for sure. read more

This seems to be more of a takeout based operation than La Gran Uruguaya down the street. There are tables, but most were empty on the day that I visited. The baked goods look and taste familiar, down to the font used on the cards that identify and price the items. That is a good thing. The ham and cheese pie here is a bit more substantial than the one I tried at LGU, the only real difference that I perceived. I also noticed that La Nueva stocked fresh chorizo and morcilla for the home cook, something that was not on offer at the competition. Will try those next time. One of my favorite neighborhood places to have breakfast in the morning. They sell all the traditional Colombian breads as well as Uruguayan items. The chicken empanadas are baked which is good, the cheese empanadas are fried and taste really good also. I just avoid eating fried foods. Coffee is pretty good also as are the ham/cheese sandwiches and croissants. They also have fresh frozen pasta, cakes and mini cakes (called mazas) for sale here. The cakes are great and the mazas are always a hit when I bring to any house parties I'm invited to. read more

The best bakery I've ever been to! The counter gets very hectic especially since a lot of the goodies don't have names! So there's a lot of yelling and pointing that goes on. Most likely something will be missing from your pastry order because it's too hectic. EVERYTHING IS DELICIOUS! The empanadas are like the ones your mom makes, anything with dulce de leche is worth getting and delicious. Next time I go I will definitely get some sandwiches. read more

I was on my way to Martha's t get a slice of tres leches and I decided to find somewhere that had a more authentic version. So I made the journey to elmhurst try La Nueva based on yelp recommendations. All I can say is ...the beef empanada was magical..and I had it without the hot sauce so I can only imagine its potential with it. I ha a baked version that was soft and warm and with beautiful seasoned beef onions and potatoes. I also got the dulce de leche which is a HUGE slice and also delicious! Came here based on all the awesome Yelp feedback. Semi-disappointed! La Nueva Bakery proudly displays on their storefront "Antojitos Colombianos." Pshhh. I can tell between real arequipe and fake arequipe, and the filling in the churros was, to my disappointment, fake arequipe. :( And we even asked the woman behind the counter if it was arequipe, to which she replied yes. It tasted like a low grade caramel, but a teeny tiny bit thicker. Every Colombian knows arequipe is really thick, creamy, and rich. This definitely was not it. Also, the churro itself tasted so stale. Sad. Really! I was so sad. However, the pasteles gloria thankfully had the real deal arequipe in it AND the dough was flaky + fresh. They also had cream cheese in it, which I'm not used to. The pasteles gloria I know only has arequipe and guava in it. I'd still come back and try something else, with a cup of café con leche. read more

You must visit this authentic Uruguayan bakery if you happen to be in the neighborhood. Hubby and I live in Dallas now and visited this bakery immediately after picking up our rental car. I felt that I was in HEAVEN when I walked in. All sorts of amazing facturas/pastries, dulce de leche, alfajores, empanadas, mate, etc. I bought it all because we needed to satisfy our cravings. I'm so glad we took the time to visit. The empanadas are pretty good and are HUGE for the price. I will make it a point to visit each time I am in NY.
