Well I can tell you that waiting on the line is the only reason I don't give this place 5 stars because the food is nothing short of amazing. I mostly had sandwiches here and a few empanadas here or there but it has always been a positive experience. I have always taken my food to go so I can not comment on the behavior of the patrons like previous yelpers have said during soccer games or what have you. I enjoyed every bite that I could manage to stuff down my throat at work when I bought food from this place...staff is friendly for the most part.. they never gave me attitude but gave someone who apparently goes there a lot by the way they were speaking with them. read more

I live in Staten Island...my grandfather was raised in Argentina so that is how I know of this great Bakery. There is always a line but it's well worth it! I drive from SI to Queens just to order their sandwiches de miga...I love them. I can't find them anywhere else (I've looked since I hate driving so far). Well worth the trip! I'm so glad this place is a hidden gem and not well known m. This bakery has phenomenal empanadas. They're not the Colombian ones they're the Uruguayan ones which are baked or fried. I love both but know that this place had the Uruguayan ones. At this bakery you should stick to the basics. That's what they're good at. My absolute favorite bakery! They have all types of food from delicious breakfasts to excellent desserts. I don't know how they make their bread but it's the best croissant. So rich and buttery. During the holidays make sure to pick up desserts from here. They even make a table to buy cuts of meat! It was love at first bite. When I discovered this place about 15 years ago and tasted their baked (not fried) empanadas, it ruined me for all other empanadas. Sure fried empanadas can hit the spot when you're starving, but so could a White Castle, but you pay for it later. OK maybe I just have a weak stomach but I've never been disappointed when ordering their empanadas and although I live in Jersey now I make it a point to stop by anytime I'm in the area and pick up a dozen. The desserts, 'fughedaboudit', and by that I mean they're good. My favorite are the tri colored cookies, that's the way to my heart, well, feeding my delicate ego doesn't hurt either. Love this place. My Uruguayan family comes here from Westchester County, NY a couple times a year for pastries (usually after eating at El Chivito). We also use them to cater things like matambre and Uruguayan sandwiches for parties. I absolutely loved it! They certainly know how to do pastries well. I had some sort of chocolate cake and strawberry-topped cake (I didn't care for the names because it just looked good). The cakes I had were moist, not stale and most important very flavorful. They have oodles of cakes that looked so good, but unfortunately I couldn't have everything in one sitting. I've only been concentrating on having the cakes, so I can't talk about anything else. I grew up in this area and have had them quite often. I think they try to re-create pastries that have already been done the right way. Their recreations are edible but not wonderful. They have pretty good cheese and spinach empanadas as well as pan de queso. Their cafe con leche is always good but you should stick to the basics here. read more

The empanadas, chicken, tuna, spinach, all really complex and tasty. The tortilla is wonderful. Great for croissants on a Sunday morning. A good place to watch football (soccer) if you don't want to go to a bar, especially with Uruguay in the World Cup. I used to like this place but one day they sold me a croissant with a cockroach baked into the top. This should have been noticed by the clerk before she gave it to me. I thought of it as just something that happens, forgave them and kept going back. Three weeks later, I found a BIG A*$ water bug in my chicken empanada. Inside the pastry. Cooked into the filling. La Nueva Bakery is one of the few gems that decorates the crown of Queens. When we first moved to New York from Argentina, La Nueva became our regular go-to bakery where we could obtain all the goodness and warmth we left behind in the form of drinks and pastries that are staples from the simplest of meals to expansive dinner tables. In recent years, its baking has expanded to include Colombian pastries, probably as a way to cater to the populous Colombian clientele. But make no mistake. La Nueva has not lost its identity. You can taste the subtle tones of Gaucho-Charrúa hands peppered with French and English influence in the lard biscuits and pan casero (home-made rolls). The yerba mate they import is still close to grade A perfection, and some of the workers have miraculously kept the rioplatense accent intact, which moves my heart to near tears with homesickness every time I hear it. Sometimes I wonder if I come for the food, or if I come to listen to the voices and bustle that remind me of the bakery we used to go to after school in Vicente López in Buenos Aires. The bakery is laid out like any other café you would walk into. There is ample seating, with a couple of large screen television sets hung overhead that are either running the news or the latest soccer match. It's a gathering for the locals to meet and reminisce, as well as for the mothers picking up their children from the neighboring elementary schools to buy a sweet something and catch a breather. You can feel the pulse of Queens if you stick around long enough. The staff are also quite friendly and attentive. You can't help but smile when you set foot to this place. Argentinian and Uruguayan baking are seamless as we have a number of commonalities in food and culture, but the owners are proud Uruguayans and have ensured to leave the consumer without a doubt of the love and loyalty felt for the motherland (the three or so posters featuring the Uruguayan National Team hung high for all to see, and the quartz timepiece hung above the cash register). La Nueva is a gem in Queens' crown. And the color of the gem is Celeste. Sky Blue (For those that don't get the soccer reference, La Celeste is the nickname of the Uruguayan National Team). Save an extra three dollars on that Starbucks late, make the effort to walk those two extra blocks and come to La Nueva, where the empanadas are savory and the coffee is good (if not better than most places) and is made with the characteristic love and warmth that is distinctly South American. read more

I live literally just down the block, on 87th St, from La Nueva. When I first moved here, I had to go for empanadas to Buenos Aires Bakery on 90th & Roosevelt. Then Nueva opened/moved. I have not tried everything because what I've tried have become my favorites. As already mentioned, the seasoned ground beef empanadas are first class. Anyone I've ever given one to loves them and become so spoiled after one that any empanadas they have in the future are always compared to La Nueva's. The ham and cheese sandwich package makes a great snack or for emergency food for drop-in company; it's fresh fast food. The churros con dulce de leche are great if you can get them (they sell fast); when they don't have them, the regular churros have to do (some sacrifice). And the alfajores are good. What I absolutely love, but not yet mentioned, is the variations of pan con chicharron. They make a bicuit con chicharron, not an American biscuit, that is great for travelling as it's compact and pretty sturdy. Then there are the larger versions, one a horseshoe shape (which I always get) and the other a wreath type table centerpiece, both with crenellated edges which become oh so crispy and easy to break off. The absolute bomb. Nothing better for breakfast than pig and bread, nothing. I grew up a Southern boy and sausage biscuits were always on the menu; this is another version yet something completely different. The slightly salty bread with the crispy fried pieces of pork goes so well with coffee, like it should. I also enjoy the fried ground beef empanada with olives and raisins, which makes it slightly sweet. Just a tad greasy, though. The one thing I do not think they do well is chocolate. Sorry, but the chocolate desserts have so little chocolate flavor. Definitely a different acquired taste than French/American tastes in chocolate flavor. I bought a brownie once and, to be charitable, I've had cardboard taste better. No chocolate flavor at all and dry as the Sahara. Now if you like that, fine, but it was a total turnoff from what one normally expects from rich and creamy chocolate-y goodness. Nobody's perfect and there's plenty of other food to be had which is absolutely fresh and delicious. As for the line complaints, there is some validity to them. The pastry counter area can get congested and look like total mayhem, especially with the cafe pickup at the (dead) end, creating only one way in and one way out. But like I said, I've been coming here just as soon as they opened at that location (IIRC, they moved from further west on 37th Ave), whenever that was (it was sooo long ago). There's something in that alone. La Nueva's been around a long time and the consistency is pretty amazing for a little local hole in the wall (even if it does have tables). I've hung out at cafes in Buenos Aires and, while La Nueva does not have outdoor seating, there is definitely that same vibe, that same relaxed energy that something as basic as a neighborhood bakery should have -- if it's a good bakery. This place has earned it's 4.5 stars =) I walk in there not knowing what to expect in terms of Columbian baked goods, but once I look around it doesn't matter. It's basically a cute 'lil cafe in nestled in Jackson Heights amongst a variety of other melting pot of restaurants and bakeries. YUM YUM YUM. I am a dulce de leche addict, so naturally i went for the churro with dulce de leche and a cafe con leche. Cafe was solid, not bad, not amazing, but a must to wash down the sugar. Churro was great, I only wish they'd warm them up before giving them to you...that would've pushed me to 5 stars...My friend also had the Alfajore and that was friggin' amazing. I don't know how they get that light and fluffy cookie and fill it with dulce de leche goodness. Warning: if you don't have a cavity, you'll get one after this, so if sugar is not your thing don't get it, but it's very, very good. They have mini sizes for those who can't handle the whole full size. While we were eating, we noticed they also had lots of food stuffs in the freezer for sale. I've been going to this bakery for over a decade. I moved to Franklin Square, Long Island a little over a year ago. With new babies, it is hard to get back to the neighborhood as much as I would like. A few months ago, a fellow yelper told me that La Nueva had closed. I was pretty heart broken. I thought I would never see Nancy and the rest of the fantastic staff again. Well, today, I was on Main Street over in Flushing. I was close by and decided to take a walk down 82nd Street. Curiosity got the best of me, so I drove down 37th Avenue and...the BEST bakery in the NYC, metropolitan area was still open! I could not tell you the relief and joy I felt those afternoon. I ordered 2 chicken empanadas - magnificent as always. I had a coffee. Best coffee in Queens. I got the VIP treatment from Nancy and the rest of the staff. I was introduced again to Hector. I met Hector right after he purchased the spot almost 3 years ago. Hector made very sure I was treated well. I brought home assorted breads, a slice of meat/egg pie (wish I knew the name, reminds me a bit of the pizza ghena my grandmother used to make). Again, no hyperbole here - La Nueva is the best bakery within 100 miles of Jackson Heights. Again, all the best. Can't wait to take the 15 month old here and the baby that's coming in May. read more
