I have a go to for fried fish with mojo de ajo, but I wanted to try a new location and decided on La Nueva Perla. The fried tilapia was flakey and moist, but it had an extremely salty coating. It also came with steak fries that was coated in salt as well, although I absolutely love potatoes, I couldn't even finish the few pieces that were included. My experience ordering here was somewhat disappointing. South SF has so many Mexican gems, but this one was unfortunately not one of them. My boyfriend enjoyed his chilaquiles plenty, but the asada here is either 1) double fried and low quality meat or 2) made in advance and SUPER tough. Reserved the back room for my granddaughter's after graduation party. I communicated with Diego and he was fantastic to work with he accommodated all my needs. Let me come in early to decorate. We came in and you could tell this is a welcoming family atmosphere. There was a musician playing sad songs, and he was pretty good. It was some nice entertainment for a Sunday afternoon. It wasn't extremely busy which was a nice surprise as there's a church nearby, and we were concerned it'd hard to find parking. There's really only metered street parking, so it's hard to find a spot here. The fish taco was tasty although the fish could be a little more fresh. The beef crispy taco was delicious, and the meat was flavorful, although the meat was a little tough. The portions were all very generous! My asada taco was tasty, but I was too full to eat it, which is great news. In my opinion the guacamole was pretty standard and the chips were a nice complimentary plus. Seated by them unless it was non busy hour then you could pick where you wanted to sit. Chip and salsa is the freebie on the house. It's unlimited lol as long as you don't waste it. Salsa is what I like the most. I ordered Huevos Ranchero. Over easy was well done instead. There was no beans in them. Black beans came separately. It was not like stackable dish with slices of avocado and feta cheese on top. It was still ok. If I have a chance I would try Birria soup. I saw people chowing them down til the last drop. This was an authentic and quaint Mexican restaurant. I came by for lunch one day and ordered takeout. The waitress was friendly and was able to to answer all my questions. It was pretty quick and the food from the kitchen smelled really good. I love the packaging for the food, it was in a hefty container packed with the super burrito, chips packed in a bag, and some salsa. The super burrito was huge and I was able to make two meals out of it! Packed with chunk of Al pastor, guacamole, pico de gallo, rice, and beans. Definitely feels like a favorite neighborhood place. Thanks to Yelpers we learned about it when we were visiting up in the Daly City / San Francisco area recently. By the time we got inside, we were concerned that we'd driven a long way for an unknown quantity. The vibe of a locals' hangout started to dispel the concern. Our server was friendly and helpful when we asked about various ingredients. I was able to find non-dairy options. Boy, it's hard to be in a Mexican restaurant and not want to consume melted cheese on various dishes! Dear Hubby and I ordered the shrimp fajitas. The style of saucing was heavier than we've had at other places. I would have preferred a lighter touch, letting the shrimp shine through. One order was plenty for us to share. Adored Grandson went for the chilaquiles, which looked really impressive. He enjoyed polishing them off. Oh, to have a teen's metabolism! This is a solid choice in a neighborhood with limited parking. Almost like being in the Avenues in San Francisco! They have a bar in the back of the main dining room, with several TV's tuned to sports events. They also have a second larger room to the side, which I imagine is used for parties and other special events. They keep it dark when not in use. This used to be my go to place for their weekday soup specials. Decided to visit on Sunday since it was a cold day and I wanted some soup. The menudo is a weekend special and since it's been a while since I've had menudo I decided to order it. Big bowl full of tripe and served with the customary limes, cilantro, onions, herbs and red chili flakes. The broth was light but flavorful. Hubs ordered the ribeye. He requested medium and it was still slightly pink on the inside - probably should've asked for rare so that it was more pink. However, the steak had good flavor. My fave are the tortillas, especially when they're served hot with some butter and/or eaten with the beans. Yum! Now I'm craving their Albondigas or Beef soups. I absolutely loved the beans and rice that came with it but even more was the handmade tortillas ! The down side is that I didn't know nor was I informed (until my check showed up) that I would be charged extra for the salsa that was brought out to me if I would have known 1- I would not have requested it and 2- since I did request it I would have taken it home since I barely used more than a spoonful of each (it was taken away before I received the check). 3/6/22 My boyfriend and I were looking to get some mexican food and we decided to try out La Nueva Perla. We got here around 7:30pm, and found parking right in front. The place is pretty small and it wasn't busy so we didn't have to wait. The waitress dropped off menus, chips and salsa for us as we sat down. Here's what we got: 1. Regular burrito with chicken (mine) 2. Beef and chicken enchilada (his) One thing I will say is that that night, the service was very lax. While we were waiting for our food, we ate all the chips and salsa and drank all our water. It literally took us 15 minutes to get anyone's attention. The staff were all busy talking with each other and when I thought they saw me raise my hand, I felt like they were looking past me and ignoring me. And after we got the water, more chips and salsa, the food came 15 minutes later. They did not apologize for the wait or anything. The food was mediocre at best; at least the food was still hot even though we waited a while for it. Chips were light and broke easily when I dipped into the salsa. My boyfriend said he liked his, but my burrito was bland. When we got the bill, there was a little section at the bottom saying that they charged an extra 4% if you use credit cards. I have to say that I don't like leaving a three star review for la nueva pearla. I have been coming here since I was a child and it had always been my go to dine in restaurant for Mexican food. This last visit however has made me question its reliability. They ALWAYS have great customer service and this visit was no exception. Our waitress was so attentive and truly a charm to have assigned to our table. The food however left a lot to be desired. My wife ordered a burrito which she said didn't have much flavor and I ordered the chilaquilles as I always do. This time I did order green sauce instead of red but either way it was not prepared well. It did not have much flavor either, nor did the rice and beans. The rice and beans actually shocked me because they have always been so fabulous. One thing that sort of rubbed me the wrong way as well was that they added a hidden 4% charge to the bill which they say is because of rising labor costs. They will excuse the charge for cash customers. In my opinion this is unacceptable. The reason made no sense to me. They need to find a new card service if the costs are to high and not charge the customer especially when my bill was over $60. Not only that but I felt like this is a dishonest way to make money off of someone not having cash to pay. They need to have a sign up beforehand. I only hope pur wonderful waitress got that money and her bosses aren't just pocketing it.
