Food was decent, but the waitress was one of the worst I have ever had at any restaurant. Went for lunch with a group of people, and the restaurant was far from busy. After being seated, it took about half an hour before the waitress to ask us about drinks; an hour before she took food orders. While eating she did not come around to refill drinks, fix a mistake with one of the meals, or check up on us. After finishing eating, it was 20 minutes before we saw her. She was spotted sitting inside on her cell phone. When we finally got our check, it had a built-in gratuity of something like 18-20% because our party had ~8 people. My impression was that the waitress knew she would get a good tip, regardless of how poor her service was, so she was generally rude an inattentive. I decided to give a 10% tip on the receipt instead, which was still far more than she deserved, mostly to make a point. She ran the receipt with the original original 18-20% tip, despite me very clearly crossing it out and writing in a 10% tip. I told her that I was not going pay above a 10% tip, and she told me that she will not change it to 10%. She basically threatened to call the manager on me, to which I obviously said yes, do that. After telling her to get the manager, she did not, and instead brought back the receipt with the correct tip. I'm sure she knew we would tell the manager how horrendous the service was. Anyway, I hope that was a lesson to the waitress that just because there is a group of people, she can't give terrible service and count on a fat tip. For the restaurant: I understand having a built-in tip for groups so servers don't work hard to only to have cheap customers leave them with nothing, but if servers are abusing the guaranteed fat tip, then the restaurant needs to rethink that policy. I was staying at the hotel across the way and decided to stop in and get something really quickly. I got the pork chimichanga dinner with a side of guacamole, to go and I was expecting it to look a little sloppy because it was takeout. I was totally wrong. It looked great and was extremely good. The pork was not shredded, and had two bay leaves still there, but I kept on moving and was able to eat half. I reheated the other half the next day... still great. After we were seated, it took almost 6 minutes for the server to come out to take our drink order. Drinks took at least 10 minutes. Asked for on the rocks, and got a frozen, so had to send it back. Food came out at a reasonable time by kitchen staff. Server just was not attentive. At one point I had to go in and ask for her to come out. If I could give zero stars I would. One of the worst meals we've ever had. We should have left as soon as we saw the chairs on the patio were all liberally dotted with bird sh*t. When a restaurant cares so little that they can't bother to clean sh*t off their chairs, you can't expect much from the kitchen. I ordered the huevos rancheros, which turned out to be 2 eggs drowned in tasteless enchiladas sauce over 2 tortillas that were so dry and stale a chainsaw couldn't have cut through them. My husband had steak tacos, with meat that was either over cooked or nearly raw. Total waste of time and money. And yes, the staff was aware we weren't happy with the food but rather than trying to remedy the situation our waitress just said she'd "let the chef know". Back in April, our company hosted a networking event. Their team helped in every way possible in making our event a success! We forgot pens for our attendees to fill out surveys and the Manager provided me a hand full of pens, which was such a huge help. During the event, our servers Alejandra and Ricardo were amazing with making sure all of our attendees didn't have an empty glass. Probably one of the worst customer service. As we walked in a mean security guard checked my ID and proceeded to put on a wrists ban. The hostess did not wait for my friend to put her wristband and continued to point out the table. They didn't even wait to walk to us to our table. We waited about 30 mins before anyone paid attention to us. We saw a few folks come in and they were seated and served. We decided to walk out and that's when the server asked me if I spoke Spanish... wtf. What did that have to do with anything? No apology for the wait or anything. Came today for dinner and I knew it was going to be a fail as soon as the salsa and chips came out. The salsa wasn't good at all....no flavor, watery and spicy. Don't get me wrong, I love hot but this was just not good. I ordered the salad, it was good. Chicken was okay. The shrimp taco a la cart was a fail. It had that boiled shrimp taste. It was watery and just fell apart....just not good. Hubby got the mussels and those were literally salty. No flavor. I didn't try his chicken fajitas, but they looked just okay. All in all, I wouldn't recommend this place. The food wasn't good and for the price, I rather spend elsewhere. I think they are pretty popular for the drinks and that's pretty much it. Two stars were for the service. Our waitress was so sweet and she was being a doll to a group of kids and getting them balloons. She checked in to make sure we didn't need anything and was very quick with our food and helpful with the specials. The Resturant itself is pretty cool. Decorated nicely and nice vibe. I like Mexican food, though usually it is remarkably bad for my waistline. My diet, wallet and happiness would have been well-served if I had followed the "red alert" klaxon intoned by the grossly overcrowded parking lot and entrance-way. We had plans to meet another couple, so I parked about a football field away, girded my misgivings about the potential for poor service, and wandered inside. My instincts were correct. Amidst a cheerfully and traditionally adorned smallish dining room in Southwestern decor were (1) several empty tables and (2) A gaggle of easily a couple of dozen unseated patrons. The waiting horde crowded into the dining room proper, which could have been an indicator of an uncommonly good restaurant experience. Could have been... Perhaps (as my wife contends) through our ill fortune or more likely (as I maintain) through incompetent "front of the house" management, two large parties in front of our group of five had not been seated and could not be seated until an already seated large party of patrons had left and their tables had been "turned." To their credit, the waiters dropped continuous if courteous hints to the languishing diners to conclude their evening and depart. Finally after a seemingly interminable delay, this did occur. After about 45 minutes (after having been told 20), we were seated at a table that had been vacant the entire time we were standing. Those large groups in front of us had paralyzed the staff, see. The large groups in front of us also contributed to unreasonably slow arrival of menus, drinks, order placement, etc. The food and drinks themselves were fine - solid but unspectacular Tex-Mex, but by the time we finally did eat I was so soured on the experience that I have vowed never to return. I was with a group of five and we just wanted to grab dinner, drinks and to hang out. We sat at the bar tables and had Herman as our server. He seemed okay at first. Then.. We noticed.. He disappeared. We never got water. We had to wave him down multiple times for multiple things. The bar and restaurant didn't seem all that busy... We really believe he was slacking. The group usually drinks a few beers and chat but after we ate our dinner we wanted to leave asap. That's how frustrating service was. Our food... I had chicken mole enchilada.... Basic enchilada. Nothing great but not awful. There wasn't any melty cheese on top.. Rice was a small portion and just not good.. Beans were dry and flavorless. I've never had mole sauce from anywhere else so I don't know what to compare it to.. So I'll say this was okay. It is a little sweet and BBQ like. My bf got some Texas chimichanga dish.. He could only finish half the chimichanga. I had a bite and it tasted like the queso. That's all I could taste. I'm not too sure how my bf liked his dish.. Meh. Tonight was our first trip to La Palapa Too and most likely our last. First the good--The service. Our server was excellent. She was attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. Also a huge positive was the restaurant decor. It was nice, warm and inviting. You wanted to sit down and have a drink and dinner. Sadly, that pretty much ends the positives from me. For dinner I chose the chicken nachos with guacamole while my husband had the burro loco. My nachos, while okay.. Did not taste like nachos! They had a distinctive Italian taste, a taste only heightened by the mozzarella cheese they used. There wasn't any salsa on the nachos, rather some sort of tomato sauce and chopped tomatoes. Now, if I had wanted Italian chips n cheese, things might have been different--but I wanted nachos. :(. Also the chips seemed stale and tough, a real NO for any Mexican establishment. As for the husband's burrito - disappointing was the word he used. All of this and we spent over 40.00. That price only includes 2 diet cokes, 1 entree, and my appetizer nachos. Way overpriced. I visited this place May, 5, 2018 and it was my second time but this second time the food was awful i got a shrimp fajita and they charge me $2 per xtra shrimp and all the shrimps were so hard that I couldn't eat them so i sent them back and in about 3 minutes they came back with new ones at least thats what they told me but they were the same one but this time even harder because they were over cook, they have no idea how to cook seafood and i am from New Orlean Louisiana and i know how shrimps need to be cook so i left them i did paid full price and o coming back again. read more

La palapa is generally good. The service is a hit or miss every time we go, the servers aren't rude, but they aren't very attentive either. We ordered three dishes and they managed to get one of them wrong, but when we sent the food back for the correct item, they forgot. So we ended up with two dishes. This has been our fav Mexican restaurant for quite some time. The atmosphere is cozy and festive. Many evening visits you'll find a mariachi band! The queso is great! Not runny or chunky. But to kick things up a notch, ask for the habanero salsa. Made fresh daily, it'll light you up! The combinations are great to share. Two hard or soft tacos with rice and beans are a great choice. One person can get both hardshell and the other soft or one of each. The hard shells don't fall apart like many do and they are STUFFED with meat, lettuce, cheese, and diced tomatoes. The beef isn't "taco meat" and is richer tasting than most recipes. In some respects, it almost bland and can taste of too much chili powder. For something different, the Mexican Seafood Chowder is simply amazing. Creamy and seafood yumyum! This, plus chips and queso is a meal that'll fill you fine. If you visit them for Sunday brunch, you must try the Breakfast Burrito or Breakfast Quesadilla. Either are refreshing and filling. I have never had a bad experience in the establishment. The food is good and the service has been adequate. I've seen post from people reviewing this place that seem to only have bad experiences on their feed. To me that says that they're either the a-holes you hope you dont get sat next to, or unreasonably picky. The type to order a meal and change the whole thing and then complain because the staff forgot to remove the shrimp from the seafood enchilada. Or maybe I'm just lucky. We've visited La Palapa Too almost every Friday night for the past two years. It's one of only a couple decent Tex Mex options in the area and we prefer it to La Palapa in Old Ellicott City. The atmosphere and service are great despite the location being an unassuming strip mall. It isn't generally hard to get a table (important with an impatient young one), and the food is consistent and good. A number of the servers recognize us when we walk in and get along great with our little girl, too. All in all, a great place for mom to get a margarita, dad to get a burrito, and the kid to enjoy some chips and black beans. She'd be fine if those were the only two things on the menu. Fajitas, the burro loco, and the tacos al carbon are consistent faves for us. Parking on weekend evenings is what will frustrate you most here. Too many restaurants that attract a crowd in this strip shopping center. It's worth driving around a few times to enjoy a meal here, though. read more

This is by far the best Mexican spot in the area! Not loading up on the chips is tough because they are that good (best salsa in the world). I personally have a hard time getting away from the steak fajitas. The seasoning and combination of flavors is superb. I feel the food is authentic (if you overlook the fajita sub and burger, which are also good). I am a fan of Uncle Julio's too but you can tell that is more corporate tex-mex whereas this is closer to the real thing. It's a comfortable spot where you can hang out for a while, which I appreciate. Service is phenomenal. They genuinely appreciate your business and treat you as such. Leti is personally my favorite because you can tell she loves the restaurant and wants you to feel the same way. She's kind of like if you were to take the best qualities from Selma Hayek, Peneleope Cruz, Sofia Vergara, Eva Longoria, Jennifer Lopez, and Eva Mendes to construct the perfect restaurant manager and thus dining experience. Marriam (manager) seems to believe that she NEEDS to have the last word and that's not okay. She made this experience one of the worst. It was a little backed up and we had to leave by a certain time. So we had to cancel our order. She was extremely rude and made up false claims about the time we arrived and the time we received our drinks and such. Whatever the case is, the drink I had was good and the waiter tried their very best. The customer service from the higher ups needs improvement. My mother in law passed away after a year-long battle with cancer and wanted us to have her reception somewhere fun and she seemed to really enjoy this place when she was alive so we chose la palapa. We agreed on a contract to use both of their private rooms for around 50 guests. They told us the minimum was $4,400 dollars to use both rooms, which isn't cheap, but we didn't worry about it because we figured we would just have a lot of food to bring home and work on. This was a massive miscalculation on our part. Let me explain.... Let's start with what was good.. The service team (not the management) did a great job. Now the bad... I became very upset when I found out that the management had made the decision that it was time to take the food that hadn't been eaten (a TON of food) and take it away. They refused to box it up for us stating that they couldn't be held responsible if someone were to get sick from boxed food, but then they told us that they would in fact allow us to bring home deserts if we wanted?? How does that make any sense? None of this would upset me very much if it weren't for the fact that I literally ran point on private parties at a nearby restaurant for about 5 years. This restaurant that I worked for has dozens of locations nationwide and is owned by a massive corporation, and I never heard anything about not being allowed to box up food for customers. They were owned by Darden and they take legal matters and health matters wildly seriously. There was probably literally at least a thousand dollars worth of food that they refused to box up for us, when I told them they should have made this clear when we signed the contract that I wouldn't be allowed to take home the extra food I paid for, and the managers in charge of the party just told me I should've read the fine print of the contract (mind you, it couldn't have been more apparent that we had just come straight from the funeral where we had been burying my mother law, with pictures of her hung up and other things that we brought clearly indicating that we had been pretty busy with dealing with the death of my wife's mother and not so worried with whether or not we would be allowed to, oh I don't know, have the food I paid for). It gets worse. They decided to wait until after management decided that we had had enough time for our entrees to tell us about this policy of theirs, and all the food was magically "gone" in the "trash" at that point. I can tell you with absolutely a 0% chance that our food wasn't being enjoyed by the kitchen staff at that very moment in time. There is no doubt in my mind that they were eating our food. I had made it pretty clear to the management of the party that I was very unhappy with how this all went down and they literally did nothing at all to even act sorry. They didn't offer anything at all to compensate for anything. Not even an apology. To top it off my friend was telling me about a time a long time ago when he waited tables at la palapa in Ellicott city and the manager there told him he had to pay for a ring-in error out of his own pocket. This is literally extremely illegal and my friend walked out on that job the same day. This place is very trashy. My mother in law always hated any food with any actual flavor, and after coming and eating here, I can see why she liked it. Ive eaten quesadillas with more flavor from Taco Bell. The queso was watery. There was literally no guacamole in the entire restaurant. If you're the kind of person that thinks pepperoni is too spicy you'll love it here. I would review how the entrees tasted but the food had already been taken away before I got a chance to go up to the serving station, so I paid 5000 dollars and got not even a bite of 75% of the items because it was all taken away so quickly. Also, the main guy in charge of the service team presented me the check and I had to remind him that I had already put a down payment of 1500 dollars down. This facility is nice enough but the food tastes like it's prepared by 7th grade home ec students and the way these people tried to swindle us at every turn left everyone feeling pretty gross. When he finally appeared and we ordered drinks, he disappeared again. 20 minutes later he came over to with our drinks. The manager came over and offered ONE of us another margarita to make up for the inconvenience. This was almost TWO HOURS later. We ended up with 20% off our checks. My disabled son and I visited the restaurant in the evening and were told the kitchen was closed. Advertised on Yelp to be open until midnight, we had expected food could still be ordered at this restaurant at 10:30 PM. Instead upon arrival we were told curtly that that we could only order drinks at the bar, despite other diners being present. No one had greeted us nor even met us at the door. I politely asked if there was any typical bar food like chips and again we were told there was none without any explanation. I got the sense that we were being discriminated against. We did not feel welcome and left shortly thereafter, which apparently was consistent with their desires. The staff appeared to be too engrossed in housekeeping duties and paid little to no attention to us as patrons. Our family has lived in Columbia, MD, for nearly 30 years and have patronized numerous restaurants in the area serving a variety of eclectic cuisines to customers of all stripes. Maybe they had a rough day, but we have never been so disheartened or treated so shabbily before. I can't really comment on the cuisine because they refused to serve us any food. I wish I had discovered this place sooner. I ordered their tacos de asada and was very pleased with the soft corn tortilla and excellent quality of steak, topped with a delicious al pastor sauce. I was at this place this evening. The food was OK (I had Fiesta Fajitas with steak, chicken and shrimp) but the service was at best spotty. The steak was tender and plenty of it, there were three large shrimp in the Fajitas as well as a large portion of seasoned chicken. The salsa was the usual red bland salsa that almost every cheap mexican restaurant has. The tortillas were small, 4 or 5 inches in diameter so it was difficult to get all of the fillings into them without overflowing onto my hand as I ate them. When I went to leave I handed the server my credit card to take care of the $20.15 bill but when he brought me the receipt to sign the amount charged on my credit card had suddenly grown to $22.32. Holy God, was this awful. Ok...on the surface, the prices don't look that bad. But then the food gets to the table. $12 order of Ceviche. Ok... but NOT for a 1/3cup serving. There was ONE little (1.5") clam, the tentacles of a miniscule squid (no rings), and a few paltry bits of fish (type unknown). Ceviche FAIL. $14.25 for beef soft tacos? Not when the tortillas are out of a bag, and the beef tastes like it is Taco Bell "steak". Seriously, the TB Gordita is better than the La Palapa soft taco. And don't get me started on the Sangria. Straight Carlo Rossi jug wine with some chopped up apple in it. YUCK. The best (or worst) part? We were trying to have a business meeting. I've been here twice for dinner. For a restaurant in a little strip mall, the prices are expensive and the food is not authentic mexican. We live in this neighborhood and when we crave mexican this is not the place to go. I would not recommend this place. Lousy service, lousy food. My wife and I have been searching for good Mexican food in the year since we've moved to MD from TX and it appears that our search is still ongoing. The Good: Server was nice and attentive. Wife mostly like her Chiles Rellenos. The Bad: Portion Sizes. Two tacos with what amounted to 1/4 cup of beans and rice for $9. Taste. Corn Tortillas overpowered my Al Pastor tacos. Is there some unwritten rule that if you have a restaurant in the middle of nowhere, you can treat your customers like they're from the middle of nowhere? I came here and saw that the parking lot was packed on this end of the shopping center which was pretty promising. Sat at the bar which was pretty packed (on a Monday) with a full bar and a decent selection on tap (Dos Equis, Miller Lite, and 3 others). Have you ever seen a packed bar with no bartender? Well I have, and it was here. It took about 10 minutes before I even saw a person walk behind the bar, and since I knew I had to catch her before she disappeared somewhere again, I decided to order with the quickness. I went ahead and got the sampler (one enchilada + one small burrito + beans + rice). She then asks if I wanted chips and salsa, and, of course, I accepted her offer. She then disappears for about another 10 minutes...no idea where she has gone, and she comes back and fills a few more drink orders around the bar. I didn't want to be rude, but I was kind of in a rush to get to class in time, so I ask where the chips and salsa are. She has this shocked look that I didn't receive them (or maybe she forgot the order) and asked someone else to bring it by for me. I receive the chips and salsa immediately (chips were hot (+), salsa looked like it came from a bottle(-)), but my food comes out right afterwards. Normally, I'm not a picky person, but one would expect the chips and salsa to come out as an appetizer to eat before I eat, to make me more hungry (South Park reference). Food was about average (best Mexican food I've had is in Herndon - Tortilla Factory - Learn it, Live it, Love it). They didn't even give me the option to choose black beans over the refried beans, but again, no biggy. I just paid my bill immediately and just went to class....mediumly satisfied. They had their happy hour specials posted in the bathroom, I think they have $1.50 hamburgers or 1/2 dozen wings. I'll come back here next week to confirm....then I might have to up it a star or two, despite the lack of service. 3 stars for taste, -1 star for service. read more
