After reading through other reviews, I figured I would weigh in since I had a similar experience to others I've read. I was wowed by the beautiful patio. My husband and I had great service and enjoyed the Caesar salad and the eggplant rollatini, but that's where the enjoyment ended. I ordered the frutti de mare with linguine and my husband had the soft shell crab with linguine. My seafood was just okay and the sauce wasn't very good - where was the basil and garlic? My husband liked the crab, but what neither of us could get past was how over cooked the pasta was. I love pasta and only have it as a treat, so on top of the cost of the meal and bottles of wine, it was disappointing to say the least. They have the patio going for them, but there are too many great Italian restaurants in the area to settle for mushy pasta. read more

This is our new go to restaurant in Millburn. We had a lovely lunch here. The service is delightful, prompt without being pushy. We dined al fresco and they had a relatively large area. You need to try to dine on the back patio. Food was marvelous. We had over 10 people so I got to try many of the dishes. The chicken Parm and pasta was enough to feed a small family. Overall presentations were strong letting the food speak for itself. The best was the cheese wheel where they cook pasta table side in a large Parmesan cheese wheel with a brandy reduction. Yummy!! My wife and I had an excellent dining experience at La Pergola last night. Service was very good, food was terrific and atmosphere was extremely nice. I had the burrata appetizer and my wife had the prosciutto & melon. Both were superb. For mains, I had the sole franchaise and my wife had the pasta with steak tips and mushrooms. Both were amazing. Total bill for two, before tip, was $134. We were extremely pleased with our dining experience last night and we would highly recommend La Pergola. BTW: La Pergola is BYO and parking is very convenient in a garage across the street. read more

August 28, 2022 La Pergola in Millburn, NJ Is One to Skip I do not usually write reviews that are not positive about an establishment. However, yesterday my wife and I and another couple had dinner at La Pergola in Millburn, NJ. We had 6:30 PM reservations and arrived a few minutes early. We were seated in their lovely outdoor seating area where there were many unoccupied tables at that hour. We reviewed the menu and heard the specials and ordered our dinners around 6:50 PM. Our salads arrived timely and were tasty and well sized. After that, everything went downhill. Although there was plenty of wait staff, our food did not come out until OVER AN HOUR AND 10 MINUTES AFTER ORDERING. We signaled for a waiter to find out where our food was twice. We kept being told it was coming. When it did finally arrive, two dishes were warm (not hot) and two were cold, so much so that the sauce was congealing on the pasta. Our friends did not send their food back, because they did not know when they would get them back. With the exception of one main course, the food was of poor quality and more than half a portion of each went uneaten. The service was so poor, we even had trouble trying to pay. Finally, someone who was neither a waiter and nor a manger came over to our table, so we could ask for the check. I told her exactly the experience we had, and she seemed unconcerned and said she would tell someone. The check finally arrived, and no one would take our credit cards for about 10 minutes when I gave it to a busboy. Credit cards taken and it was another 10 minutes, and no one returned our credit cards or credit slips to sign. Finally, the husband of the other couple got up and demanded our cards and slips, so we could get out of there. He also informed the person he spoke with about the terrible service and poor quality of the food, and NO ONE SEEMED TO CARE. If you work hard for your money, don't waste it here. read more

We came to La Pergola for a celebratory dinner and it did not disappoint! Food - Delicious! They didn't have any vegetarian options on the menu, but when we asked they were more than happy to suggest several dishes off the menu as well as any custom pasta dish. They also accommodate gluten-free dishes. Drinks - It's BYOB and there's a liquor store down the street. Service - Wonderful! We were running late for our reservation and when I called to let them know, the hostess was a bit rude and said we would have to rush through our meal. However when we arrived, the staff was extremely friendly, accommodating, and we were able to take our time and enjoy. We came with a big group on a Saturday night. There is a large parking lot that's free after 6 right across the street so driving is convenient. It is also BYO which was great as well and keeps prices down. The service was extremely friendly and attentive and accommodating. The only issue was we had reservations but had to wait 30 minutes to be seated. The food was fantastic. The chicken parm was the star and is gorgeous served on a wood plank and huge. The eggplant lasagna also looked amazing. I'm vegan and they were great providing whole wheat linguini with a red safe and primavera style with vegetables and it was really good. The bill for 10 people was 500 bucks before tip but that's frankly amazing and helped by lack of drinks. Highly recommended. read more

The restaraunt is beautiful and the service is incredible. However, the actual food is not fine Italian cuisine nor is it remotely authentic. Perhaps they have no clue on how to prepare interesting vegetatian entrees, the soup was flat no flavour, the salad was large but not really well proportioned interms of the Balance of ingredients and the beets were stale, the lentils were dry but had a nice flavour, spinach fetuccini was delicious as was the tiramisu (possibly the best we ever had).The brocolli rabe gnocci was interesting but sadly fell flat when no fresh brocolli rabe was served with it...and they left off the ricotta for some reason. As a vegetarian I would not return to this restaraunt. But for non veg it may be ok- it was incredibly expensive for pasta and vegetables... read more

I've never had to write a yelp review like this before but I couldn't not say anything. I would highly recommend that you do not eat here, especially if you're a person of color. My fiancé and I are new to the Jersey area and wanted to try a nice Italian spot for NYE. Not only was the food terrible and over priced but I strongly believe we were racially profiled and incorrectly charged because of it. At the end of our meal when we went to pay it was very surprising to see the tip was handwritten in for us and our card charged for the amount of our meal PLUS the 20% tip. Granted, we would never tip less than this anyway, but it's strange that the tables around us had a standard receipt where you could write in your tip and sign and ours did not. I normally wouldn't assume race had anything to do with this but we were the only people of color in the restaurant and the owner also greeted every other table except ours. It seems as though they assumed we wouldn't tip and did it for us but gave the other tables around us the standard receipt with the tip and signature line. Worst meal I have ever had. Duck à l'Orange looked ok but after eating the leg I turn it over to eat the breast and found it burnt to a crisp. The saffron risotto was under cooked and the rice was crunchy. Not creamy. The waiter was sure to mention the saffron when I ordered the duck and risotto. He failed to mention it would be served under cooked. The kitchen should be embarrassed to serve this dish for $48.00. read more

For some reason, this place did not seem to do that well on yelp. But mom was getting her hair done next-door at Dolce, and the stylist said oh yeah, definitely go there! But BYO! I ran around the corner to the wine store and bought a beautiful dry rosé, and off we went. The place is just what you want for a beautiful, elegant meal. White linen tablecloths, quiet And servers that are just dolls. Everything we ordered was magnificent from the appetizer (melon with prosciutto) to the steak tips with fettuccine and definitely the salmon! I was told that they do fish, and was not disappointed at all. That is always my gauge for how good a place is is how fresh and delicious is the fish. This is a must do if you are in the area. Our first visit was very disappointing, despite the very nice outdoor setting. None of the 4 of us praised our diverse choices--two entrees were badly overcooked; 3 lacked seasoning. Service was simply awful--entrees did not arrive until the 2 hour mark; we were never asked if we wanted coffee or dessert; and we had to ask 3 times for the check. Our family of 4 had dinner on Father's day here, because we heard it has a nice outdoor dining area. Upon arriving we were greeted by a very sweet host lady and seated. We made a reservation prior, and was a bit surprised that she did not ask for the name under the reservation and there didn't seem to be "reserved" signs at the table, but it wasn't a big deal. The outdoor dining area was pretty cute and we chose to sit at one of the tables in the grass area next to the parking lot which was roomy. The Service: I would give a one star for the service. After taking our order maybe 10-15 mins after we were seated, which was fine, we got our basket of bread which was standard. After a few minutes our appettizer salad came - but we waited about an hour, if not longer for our entrees. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and we waited patiently for a while because Father's day rush can certainly contribute to the slower service. However I think it is pretty basic courtesy for a server to check in with us and say an apology for a long wait, or refilling our bread since the wait was so long. There was none of that. After 50 minutes I asked one of the waiters that walked by about our order, but he never came back with any news. Then we asked the manager to check on our order; he told one of the other waiters to make sure we get our order but with an unapologetic attitude. When i went inside to use the bathroom later I realized they did not even have a full house - half the tables outside in the area by the back door was empty. I waited about 7-8 minutes after, my dad was pretty hangry and told the manager we wanted to just cancel and leave. Then the manager just said "ok" and with a grumpy face and walked indoors. We figured that was the push needed to get our order. After a few minutes they came out with our entrees, which were just a salad, a spinach fetuccini, the rack of veal, and short ribs. If the wait is long, the waiter/manager should at least have a nice attitude and refill our bread. I don't feel that this was due to the fact that it was Father's day, but purely very poor staffing management and training. Unfortunately very disappointed in their service, especially on a day meant for celebration. The Food: The food, two stars. Their fathers day menu had a very limited selection - just a few salad as the appetizer options and maybe 7-8 items on the entree menu. We didn't see a kids menu which we wanted to order for my 10 year old brother, but later we saw at the neighboring table their toddler had something that seemed like a kids menu item. We wish the waiter would have mentioned a kids menu was available seeing that we had a kid in our party. The appetizer, the burrata salad was just four giant pieces of tomato with a little bit of mixer greens and a blob of mozzarella with a bit of pesto on top. We don't eat Italian often but we expected the salad to be a bit better than that. The arugula salad was average, and the short ribs was was tough, not so tender, though the seasoning was decent. The rack of veal was decent. The veal and braised short ribs were $48 each, the salads were $14 and $18 for the small portion that didn't even have meat or fish in it. We found out when we were paying that the sparkling water I ordered was $8 dollars. Extremely over-priced for the kind of food and service we received, even for a place like downtown Millburn! We would definitely not come back. The service is honestly such a big part of the experience and it very much ruined our night which was meant to be a joyful time of celebration. read more

Excellent food - terrible service. You know what you sign up for when you go here. Every. Single. Time. Yet we eventually end up returning. Expect perfectly seasoned and executed northern Italian dishes. Also - prepare to be ignored the entire meal by all waitstaff, have no idea who your waiter/waitress is, and wait a very long time in between interactions. Always completely understaffed and under trained young kids - often not greeted at the door for a long period of time and then 15-30 mins behind in table reservations. Also, bring your own corkscrew (along with many bottles of wine) in addition to tons of patience. Only then will you be prepared to enjoy some great food. read more

Fantastic restaurant in Millburn. La Pergola is very consistent with an exceptional array of Italian cuisine. The homemade pasta is one of my favorites however the dry aged ribeye I had recently was one of the best steaks I had in eons. My family had quite a few large parties here and the service has been exceptional. The food all came out in unison which is impressive for a party of 20+ people. Not one complaint regarding taste, temperature, errors, etc. Truly magnificent! The decor, and cleanliness are top tier, with floor to ceiling windows allowing gorgeous ambient lighting that really makes the restaurant magical during sunset. Highly recommended. read more

My daughter and I had lunch on their outside patio on a very hot day in August. Under the shade of their umbrellas and trees, it was very comfortable. Service was great as was the food. Quite a hidden gem if you ask me. For some reason when I dined here, the restaurant wasn't too busy, as there was only 2 other tables that had customers. At first I was a bit skeptical when I walked in because I wasn't sure what to expect because it was so dead inside. Upon being seated, I glanced over the menu and wasn't sure what I wanted because everything sounded so delicious. I ordered the Burrata and the Black Linguini with Jumbo Shrimp in Fra Diavolo Sauce . Can't even find enough words to explain how delicious is was. Now if this place wasn't over an hour away from where I live, I'd definitely be here a more often. This amazing restaurant runs like a well-oiled machine. The service is astounding. Even with a full house there were always several servers and hosts refilling wine, checking in with us, and not in an annoying way. The food was fantastic, a wide assortment of choices on the menu plus great specials. We enjoyed a pasta app with truffles, and the lasagna bolognese lived up to the hype. BYOB made it a reasonable night, will be back often and looking forward to eating at the outdoor courtyard as the weather warms. Highly recommend. read more

Very nice ambience. Dining in the garden is superb for date night. Not too loud. We got a party (~15 folks) in the corner table that's a few meters away from us, we are still able to enjoy our dinner. Service is ok. This place is a little understaffed. Our server is great at the very beginning at 6pm when there were only three parties in place. When we finished our main course, there's nobody pouring our water or wine anymore, nor was there anyone to ask us for dessert menu. This place got quite busy at 7pm and service went down with it exponentially. Food is pretty good. We had the daily special, sardine salad and fish stew. Both seemed pretty fresh (most place has the seafood not as good as if you order it pan seared or grilled). Andrew had ficcucine. Both main are heavy in sauce, felt a little overwhelmed when I finished 2/3 of the dish. We didn't really have the dessert, one as the server became a bit absent minded in the end, and two they didn't have Tiramisu, the one I'm most interested in. Second to that was a lemon cake, I asked the server what's that, he said it's cake, but tastes like lemon. read more

Had my mother's 60th birthday with about 16 people. The food was good but some dishes lacked seasoning! My mother in law and aunt could not get enough of the stuffed artichoke appetizer though. Service was terrible and most likely the reason I will not be going back. Our dinner was very early at 3PM with no one in the dining hall. Server seemed annoyed the entire time. No smile, no attentiveness, nothing. Actually was making my guests a little uncomfortable. Service adds to the experience so I was pretty bummed that we had someone with a face the entire time. Frankly I'm depressed and ashamed. I went here tonight with my wife expecting a meal that was at the very least decent, instead I got treated to a lukewarm bowl of animal feces. Firstly, they did not honor any reservations or reservation times (didn't even check us in for OpenTable). We waiting in a line at the door. Tables were sat on a first come, first serve basis despite some of us having reservations. Never the less, the wait for a table wasn't bad and my wife and I were intrigued by the menu and the reputation this place has in the area. We sat down and perused a menu that was a fraction of what was represented by the menu online. My wife, who does not eat meat or shellfish, asked the waiter for some vegetarian options and he brushed her off, giving her an attitude for a simple question. The only options he gave were to order one of the pastas on the menu without meat. I ended up ordering a chicken parm (on special) and she ordered the broccoli rabe ricotta gnocchi without meat. We also shared a burrata appetizer. The burrata arrived about 30 minutes or so after we ordered served with a mixed greens salad and 3 slices of the most unripe tomatoes I've had since Moses wore short pants. The salad was nicely dressed with a balsamic vinaigrette, but the tomatoes were gross and not ripe at all. The burrata itself was of good quality but was clearly left sitting in the fridge way too long and was way too cold to be served. We continued to wait for our food for another 45 or so minutes (honestly we really didn't mind since the place was packed). When the food was brought to us I got my chicken parm and it was a large portion and tasted pretty good. My wife was brought an entirely different pasta dish, with meat. Apparently explicitly telling the waiter her dietary restrictions and order had no impact on the food she actually got. Another waiter who appeared to have taken over some of our waiter's tables came by and we amicably explained the situation and gave him her order again - broccoli rabe ricotta gnocchi, NO MEAT -- he repeated the order and apologized for the mix up, assuring us her food would be out in no time. After ~15 another waiter aggressively dropped my wife's food at the table and ran away from the table so fast you'd think someone was chasing him with a machete. Needless to say, there was meat in her food - yet another misstep, and now no meal for my wife. I called over the manager or head waiter (he was visibly bossing around the rest of the staff) and explained the situation. Was he sympathetic? No. Did he offer to remedy the situation? Absolutely not. What did he do, you might be asking yourself? He proceeded to list several vegetarian options (all off menu by the way) and then blamed my wife for not ordering any of them (despite the fact they weren't on the menu or offered to us when my wife specifically asked for vegetarian options). I told him to pack my chicken parm so I could get the hell out of there and get some food for my wife. After a few minutes they brought the check, I gave my card and waited ~15 minutes for them to rob me for the chicken parm ($38) and the crap burrata ($18). Thankfully they did not charge for the lack of food they brought my wife. As background, I've had the privilege to dine at places high and low, ranging from McDonalds Rest Stops to 3 star Michelin fine dining establishments throughout the US, Europe, and Asia, and have, for the most part, found something endearing or enjoyable from each and every one of those experiences until now. I wouldn't wish this place on my worst enemy. If I had the choice between eating my dog's crap or going through this experience again, it wouldn't even be close. Just give me some Tabasco and I'd eat that dog crap 10 times out of 10. This place is a disgrace to restaurants. As an Italian, I can say it's a disgrace to the thoughtfulness, skill, and love that goes into our cooking. And finally, as a human being, I can say that I would never want my fellow (wo)man to be treated the way I was treated here. For those of us who live in the area, we have an abundance of options when it comes to restaurants in general, and Italian food specifically. Don't make the same mistake I did. Go literally any place else. Salute! read more

Unfortunately, our experience was not so great...we made reservations after doing a complete review on Yelp and Goggle to celebrate a friend's 40th birthday. We were a well dressed party of 4 (all AA women). When we arrived, we were greeted by the host ( very nice young lady) and given the options of indoor or outdoor seating. We choose indoor because of the time of evening and weather temperature. We were seated within 5 minutes but noticed some back and forth between the host and waiter when she advised him that he would be taking care of our party. Not sure what the discrepancy was but either way it was noticeable and made us a little uncomfortable. Once seated it took from 15-20 minutes before anyone came over to say hello. I don't know the waiters name because I don't think he ever properly introduced himself. We were given a one page menu with very limited selections but at some point the waiter did spill out the specials for the evening which sounded like a whole undocumented menu! (Not sure why these items are not on the actual menu). We ordered our appetizers and main course meal while we had our waiters attention. Our appetizers came out fairly quickly through the food runner (very nice young man) but we waited almost an hour for our main course!! The waiter stopped by a nearby table and advised them that their food would be out shortly but proceeded to walk by us without saying a word!! I politely joked about it when he walked by saying "does that the mean same for us"? He brushed it off with a chuckle. Once the food arrived it was not what we expected! I ordered the linguine clams which was tasty but a bit chewy. Another had the black linguine which she seemed to be pleased with. The last two ordered the salmon which was served over spinach and it was horrible! No taste and the spinach tasted as if it was boiled in water and not sautéed in olive oil as stated on the menu. They were wise and opted to take it home instead of trying to force it down. Well lucky for them because myself and the other person that did eat could not wait to get home...our stomachs were hurting so bad!! We knew it had to be the food because we were the only ones that ate our entrees!!! I know this is a long review but I wanted to be sure to capture the entire experience....needless to say it was not what we expected! I did notice that the place was a little crowded and seemed to be understaffed but that's no excuse. We should have complained to the manager but sadly because of our skin color and the stereotype around AA and complaining to get out of the bill we choose not to and just vow to never support this establishment again!! read more

We ordered pick up for Xmas lunch for 12 from La Pergola. The food was delicious and the owners were very kind to help us make selections that were optimal for our group based on their tastes and dietary restrictions. We also really appreciated the way the food was well packed and prepared, so we could easily re-heat the food on Christmas day. We especially enjoyed the stuffed mushrooms, chicken francese with linguine, and eggplant lasagne. Our guests had a wonderful Christmas meal and all commented on how delicious the food was. After being to La Pergola for a lovely Valentine's Day dinner back in 2019, I decided to choose this restaurant for a very special occasion. We had a private party of around 20 guests. I was so excited as the food is excellent but instead we were met with the service that shouldn't even receive 1 star. The head chef/owner herself was rude, abrupt and making us feel as though we were more of a bother to have had our party there then anything else. She was using phrases like "well there's nothing I can do about it"' when all we were asking was to move two tables together and "you don't know what it's like in this business" All she was concerned about was having us out of the restaurant before her dinner crowd started, which mind you was 4.5 hours in advance of 5pm. Had I not been with 20 people who travelled far to be with me I would've walked out. It was completely unnecessary behavior and no way to treat customers, who by the way are going to spend a hefty penny at your restaurant. I am so disappointed. I will never be going back to La Pergola which is unfortunate as I am a life long resident of the area. I may add that our waiter was lovely and you could see how uncomfortable he was by his bosses behavior. Caution for big parties. read more

La Pergola is a beautiful Northern Italian restaurant located in Millburn. It's owned by a couple where the wife is the chef, and the husband is the host making sure all his guests leave happy. I was very excited to dine here as they have some really unique pasta dishes I wanted to try, and all the pastas here are house made. The owner said we can order half orders of the pasta dishes as appetizers, and we were sure glad he did! That gave us a chance to try the amazing pasta here plus get to try two entrees from the menu. We ordered two half orders of pasta to start the beet gnocchi and butternut squash ravioli. The beet gnocchi was topped with honey toasted walnuts in a creamy parmesan champagne sauce. It was exceptional! The butternut squash ravioli came in a brown butter sage and sweet date sauce. It was outstanding! The pasta dishes here just blew us away! For entree I requested veal parmesan with a side of linguini. It wasn't on the menu, but he was so accommodating and said ok. We also ordered the red snapper in a puttanesca sauce over linguini. The veal parmesan was cooked to perfection, and I was so happy I was able to order it with linguini instead of potatoes and vegetables. It gave me another chance to enjoy the fresh made pasta here! The red sauce it came with was made Northern style so it isn't as flavorful as I like my marinara sauce to be. It was a little more bland, but the veal itself was very good. The red snapper dish we both loved the puttanesca sauce, but we thought the red snapper itself had a bit of a fishy taste. The restaurant was very busy at this time, and now a waiter came over with the dessert menu. The dessert menu was limited which I was kind of disappointed with because their online menu there was a raspberry tart and a fig tart listed. Both of which I was hoping to order, but were not on the menu we received. I asked the waiter if there was any other dessert specials and he said no. We ended up ordering a mousse cake and a limoncello cake. The mousse cake wasn't that great. The limoncello cake was pretty good. We were both happy we dined at La Pergola. The house made pastas here are the star dishes. They were fantastic! The owner was warm and accommodating to us which is how every business should be run. I recommend dining at La Pergola in Millburn, and don't leave without ordering one of their house made pasta dishes! read more
