Came here on Cinco de Mayo, easily the busiest day of the year for Mexican restaurants; and this place absolutely crushed it. We were seated in about 10 minutes, which is unheard of on a night like that. The service was next level; multiple servers worked together seamlessly, making sure every table was taken care of without missing a beat. The kitchen was firing on all cylinders, pushing out food fast despite being completely packed inside and out, and everything came out hot, fresh, and perfect. They even had complimentary snacks to build your own street corn (hands down my favorite) and gave out Cinco de Mayo glasses, which was pretty cool. I honestly can't say enough good things about this place, the food, the service, the atmosphere, all of it. La Placita is the real deal. I came to La Placita Mexican Grill around an hour before they were closing on a Saturday day afternoon. Not many people left, maybe three tables. After about 10 minutes, I finally got up and looked for the waiter. When He finally came to my table, I received the complimentary chips and salsa. Although warm, these chips were overly greasy, and what you'd find at the bottom of a bag, mostly crushed, with only a few that you could actually dip into the salsa with, which was only acceptable and not very good, tasting like something from a jar mixed with fresh cilantro. Again, I will restate that I arrived within an hour of closing. I ordered the barbacoa plate. It arrived with traditional rice and beans, a dollop of guacamole, tomato slice, over some lettuce. All topped with sour cream, which I do not care for. That's my mistake, actually. Serving, Mexican table cream, on the other hand, would be a plus. My barbacoa came looking more like Birria, which is a red chili and spices sauce. No problem, I really like Birria. I also was served two corn tortillas, wrapped in aluminum foil and probably kept warm in a hotel pan. Needless to say, these were gummy and too chewy to eat. I decided not to bring this up to the waiter who, by this time, was bussing tables and preparing to close. Ultimately, the food was just okay. And I left thinking that I will come back and give this place a fair chance to redeem themselves with this less than stellar 3-star review. read more

You may have found in most restaurants, these are fairly bland plate fillers, but not here! At La Placita, obviously they have paid close attention to every item they prepare. My husband and I love this restaurant! It is super laid back and definitely a hidden gem. The chips are super thin, crispy, and hot! Talk about fresh extreme! The salsa was the only "almost" downfall but it had some fresh ingredients added so it was decent. Now let me get to the important stuff. Mexican Tacos 1 for 1.99 or 3 for 5.99. They are so amazing. The fresh cilantro and onion on top of some amazing meat? It could not get any more fresh! I highly recommend the barbacoa!! The flavor is amazing and it is cook with just the right spice. I enjoyed my dinner. Greeted as soon as I entered and shown to a comfy booth. The bright colors and Mexican tunes add to the authenticity. Dinner cam out fast food thing because the chips are ridiculous. As great as I think the chips are the salsa was too watery. I enjoyed the enchilada combo with a bean chicken and ground beef enchilada and a gooey cheese sauce that was tasty and filling. The beams are terrific but the rice was bland flavorless and dry. Maybe because its kind of late but who eats the rice anyway. This was boiler plate Mexican but the highest rated one between my job site and my hotel. I'm running out of places to eat around here. I hope I can finish my project soon and get a home cooked meal. read more

The ambience was neither great nor terrible, the service was slow, and the food was bland and boring. The menu had a lot of great options with good descriptions. The Peach Margarita was delicious but the Border Margarita was confusing and uninteresting. La Placita was overpriced for the quality of food. The prices were on par with other Mexican restaurants ($9-12 for entrees) but the quality was lower and quantity was less. I would consider returning to this restaurant if the meals were $2-3 cheaper. Otherwise, I would recommend going to Old Mexico Cantina which is right around the corner. Ambience (10%) 2.7/5 La Placita is in a small strip mall off of Hughes Road. The exterior is nothing notable and the sign is easily visible from the road. The interior was decently decorated. There was an abundance of wall art nicely spread out throughout the restaurant. However, there was also a large mirror right near our table which was dirty and forced me to look at myself when I stood up. I could see two televisions from our booth, but they were both turned off. There was nice music playing at a reasonable volume. Many of the lights seemed to be turned off but it was still bright enough that I didn't even notice that until the end of the meal. The restaurant was ~50% full. Service (15%) 2.1/5 The service was very slow. We were quickly seated and ordered waters. The chips were brought out soon after that. It took about 10 minutes to receive the waters. It then took another 15 minutes to order margaritas and food. The drinks were brought after only a couple of minutes, but the food took another 10 minutes. The checks were processed relatively quickly. I am still unsure as to who our server was because we were waited on by two different people the entire time. There is a lot of room for improvement here. Menu (15%) 4.1/5 The menu was good and had a lot of options without being too extensive. The entrees had concise descriptions that clearly explained the contents of the dish. The appetizer section was severely lacking in both items and descriptions. I considered ordering an appetizer until I saw the lack of options. There were numerous margarita and beer options but some of the margaritas needed more descriptions. For example, there was one margarita called the "Border Margarita" and another called the "Green Margarita". I was unclear as to what flavors these were. Overall, the menu was good. Food (40%) 2.3/5 The food was bland and boring. The chips and salsa were below average because the chips were paper thin and the salsa had very little flavor. It was not spicy, but it did have good consistency and was in a deep dish that was perfect for scooping. However, I feared that my chips would break if I put too much salsa on them. My companion noted that the chips and salsa were reminiscent of Chili's chips and salsa. We ordered the "Happy Burritos (chicken)" and the "Burrito Supreme (chicken)". The Burrito Supreme came with ample rice and beans which did not make up for the small size of the burrito. The Happy Burritos came with two burritos which was the equivalent of one burrito at many other Mexican food establishments. The "special sauce" for the Burrito Supreme was bland and flavorless and tasted as though it came from a can. The shredded chicken inside tasted as though it had no seasoning at all. The Happy Burritos had a good amount of cheese sauce and onions. The refried beans and rice were good. Overall, the food wasn't bad but it was extremely underwhelming. Drinks (20%) 3.7/5 We ordered the Peach Margarita (frozen) and the Border Margarita (rocks). The Peach Margarita was delicious and had a very strong peachy flavor and good frozen consistency. The Border Margarita was not described on the menu, so I was unsure of what to expect. It tasted like a normal lime margarita with a strong alcohol aftertaste. I am confused on the flavor because there was another menu option for a "Lime Margarita". It was average. Although it tasted of alcohol, I experienced zero alcohol side effects. I've dined at the vast majority of Huntsville/Madison's Mexican restaurants and this one is by far my favorite. I was skeptical upon arrival but will never shy away from a hole-in-the-wall, which this surely is. Although small and simple, I did not think the place lacked in cleanliness at all. The wait staff was also extremely polite and the service was speedy. I'll start with the ONLY bad thing, which admittedly is pretty bad for me, but definitely not enough to keep me away: The salsa is not good. The chips and the thin, warm ones that I love...But the salsa was watery, thin, and tasteless. This is usually a good indicator of the restaurant's other offerings. Nope. The meals are delicious. The highlight, shockingly for a low-priced Mexican place, is the meat. It all tastes fresh (even the shrimp!) and not overly seasoned....And they allow it to stand out. The second highlight is the sauce. Every sauce that I've tried managed to not overpower the meat but still be very flavorful and distinct. Visited La Placita today as part of a lunch outing with co-workers. We ordered the Luchador, which is a sharable plate of steak, chicken, chorizo, onions, peppers, rice and beans pilled in between flour tortillias and topped with verde and white cheese. It was amazing! The four of us had a plateful each, plus 3 of us dug back in for seconds! At $15.99, we agreed that it cold easily be a regular outing for us or our respective families. The homemade salsa was deish...more flavorful than hot. The staff was very friendly and attentive, the restarunt was clean and conviently located and the entree we shared was fabulous. All those things combined made this rating an easy Five stars! I noticed a sign that advertised food and drink specials throughout the week, including Saturday and Sunday. Don't bother unless you want to get ripped off. I went with two kids at lunch time (11:30 am) and asked for a lunch menu. We ordered three lunch specials, two sodas, and one coffee. The beans were too salty but the chips and salsa were wonderful. Everything else was okay. The shock was the bill at over $50. When I asked why, I was told that we had ordered off the dinner menu. When I said no, the waiter said that we had been given dinner portions and needed to pay the full bill. BS. I paid the bill but will NEVER GO BACK. No thanks.
