I wish we lived closer to come more often!! The food was so yummy!! The service was amazing from the lovely manager who seated us (congrats on the baby boy on the way!) our waiter was wonderful, I didn't remember his name but awesome service- professional, courteous, and kind. Food was spectacular we had the shrimp enchiladas and carnitas burrito covered in Colorado sauce. The Desert Rose drink was as delicious as it is was gorgeously displayed. Overall atmosphere was fun, modern, and inviting; the only big minus was the collection of dust on the fake plants near your face/head when seated and eating. read more

Food tastes consistently mediocre here. I came the first week they opened & the tacos were okay (ribeye I think)...drinks were more memorable. Came again like three months ago & got the queso. The cheese cooled too quickly & became congealed. They also stopped giving the complimentary chips & salsa board w/ a purchase (unless you ask for it, which I appreciate not having to do at Zocalo & Nixtaco). I stopped in quickly today before an appointment & ordered a beer on HH & a side order of their tajin fries. Was not super impressed. Several undercooked fries that looked too pale for my liking. I'm giving this place three stars b/c the value during HH is pretty decent. Thinking I might just stick to my initial impression from the first visit & only come for drinks moving forward. read more

UPDATED REVIEW! I believe last night was the third time we have been to La Popular and I think each visit steadily gets a little better. We came last night on a double date before going to the movies and the experience was better than the last couple of times we were visited. We ordered a round of drinks - El Ranchero, Oaxacan Old Fashioned, Forbidden Paradise Mule and tequila shots plus Guacamole and Chips to start. For our entrees, my husband and I ordered the Combo Plate with 2 tacos and a Mole Enchilada and the Ribeye Tacos. We both really enjoyed our tacos and enchilada, but we both noticed that the rice and beans were very salty. I didn't mind so much, but it was a lot for my husband. I liked the Ribeye Tacos a lot - the salsa was spicy and the pickled onions were perfect. The interior of La Popular is warm and dark, so dark that we all found it difficult to read the menu - call it old age, but maybe a brighter light above the tables would help. They have lots of tables, a picturesque bar and a nice patio area that was pretty busy at 6:30pm last night. Staff were friendly and attentive - Ashley was sweet and took great care of us. Overall, is it my favorite place in Roseville? No, but La Popular does the job in a pinch - a pinch of too much salt actually. Check them out! read more

I really wanted to like this place but was disappointed. Our server was friendly seated us right away and instead of letting us know chips and salsa was complimentary, she sold us the chip tray for $6ish, not off to a good start. I ordered the grande margarita which was really good made with fresh ingredients. Ok, starting to recover but then we got our food. I ordered al a cart tacos and they were just ok., For $6+ a taco I was not expecting stale store bought tortillas. My husband ordered a birria burrito with enchilada sauce on top and it was also just ok. Mostly rice and beans and I think it came with cheese, but didn't taste any. I would say Chipotle is better. I would come back for drinks and complimentary chips and salsa but that's it, what they are charging for their food is not worth what they are giving you. read more

This place is definitely a full five stars for me! My parents live up in the Roseville area and I have been able to enjoy this spot a couple of times. All the tacos are super yummy as well as the margaritas. They have a great happy hour that includes excellent food and beverage choices. They also have a nice ambiance both in and outdoors. The bar is a square formation which is great because you can catch up on sports on the tvs from any angle indoors. They have a good salsa sampler with the chips and the guacamole is great as well for an appetizer. I can't wait to go back and try some more items! My dad enjoyed the enchiladas and they are next up on my list. read more

We wanted to give a shoutout to Misty for making our group dinner such a special one. She was attentive, timely, and helped us celebrate a birthday at our table when we came unprepared with only our cheers and horrible singing voices. Her service is a five star experience all around! Also, thanks to the hostess for helping us capture our group's yearly holiday photo. We had a 6pm reservation, and while we arrived at different times, we had rounds of appetizers and drinks before we finally ordered entrees. One person had dietary restrictions, and her meal came out incorrectly, but Misty was quick to help her fix her order. Enchiladas are so small, but tacos were delicious and worth the price. I'd go for the creamy chipotle shrimp tacos any day. And I loved my lil cactus cocktail (the Desert Rose), that was mezcal forward without overwhelming the prickly pear flavor. However, we were seated in outdoor metal chairs in the indoor space next to the window - some couldn't get into the seats themselves because of the arm bars, and had to manually rearrange chairs so those on the inside could get the armless ones. We were also in direct line of the dj speaker that was great, but so so loud. We were shouting and playing musical chairs to chat with each other. Hilarious in retrospect, but we would have preferred to... not. I'd come back with 1-2 folks for happy hour, but this is not the spot for a large group. read more

I stopped in to La Popular because it was located near my hotel and I was craving a margarita. Boy- did they deliver! The bartender, Ashley, set me up pretty quickly with a spicy mango jalapeño margarita. It's one of their specialty cocktails and it was very tasty. I also had a coupon for some guacamole from the hotel so I ordered that as well. The guac was very tasty and super fresh. The portion was huge, too. I finished that up as my dinner and was so close to ordering another margarita- they all looked so good! Alas, I resisted. Ashley was super great with recommendations and made me feel at home while visiting her bar. The ambiance in here is very Mexican hipster, music was pretty loud and lighting was dim, but decor was very cool. I couldn't leave without ordering a butter cake to-go. It was very good, however if it didn't have the sauce, it would have been quite dry. The ice cream and sauce are the real MVPs of the butter cake. Would recommend! read more

Came here for birthday dinner for mama since she wanted tacos. . We ordered the fajita with shrimp and steak. The tacos come with corn and flour tortilla of your choice or you can order both which we did and I like the flour tortilla better. The steak was cooked medium rare and the prawns was flavor and was in overcooked. I also like their chips and salsa which was complimentary. I do like their guacamole it was very flavorful and it was very fresh. They also have happy hour till closing which was a very good deal if you are looking for happy hour at night time without a time limit. . The ambience was on the darker side but they had a really nice Spotlight for each table in a fire pit in the outside patio which looked very cozy. There is a bar in the middle of the restaurant so you can grab drinks quickly. There's even a Brewery next door which has flowing draft beers. . The dessert was really great and we had a churro with chocolate and caramel dip. The cocktails that we got to choose was a habanero strawberry margarita and a virgin pina colada which was really refreshing. Visited La Popular on a weekday to have a girls dinner date with my two friends! We started with some drinks , two of us got N/A and 1 with alcohol. I really appreciated having these options for us two pregnant women who weren't able to indulge in spirits! The servers were all great and very accommodating when we asked to be moved to a table with larger chairs with pillows for us to be more comfortable. For my main I ordered two tacos and a side of beans and rice. The food was good, not amazing. For me personally, it lacked a bit of flavor and tasted a bit bland. We ordered chips and salsa and were also a bit disappointed in their flavors. As someone who has visited many Mexican restaurants I think my standard may be a bit high. First time eating at La Popular. Their ambiance is great and they have indoor and patio seating. I would imagine this would be a great date spot or a good place to hang out on a Friday or Saturday night. Our Saturday lunch time server was friendly and the menu has plenty of choices. Loved that they have Mexican Coke in the bottle...nothing better! Downside is having to pay for chips and salsa...please fix this! I decided to try their Chicken Tortilla Soup, the Hubster had the mole enchiladas, and the kiddo ordered the Chipotle Shrimp Tacos. All looked delicious when they were delivered to our table. I will say that my daughter disclosed that their portions, under the previous management, were more generous. However, with that said, the food was tasty and we enjoyed it. Also, the manager did stop by our table multiple times which we appreciated. Will La Popular be a choice for us in the future? Came to La Popular late night for Taco Tuesday and was really impressed!! The restaurant is beautifully decorated very much a vibe! They even had live music! Despite being late, our waitress came over and took our order, giving recommendations on the best options from the special taco Tuesday menu. We basically ordered two of each option and every single item was incredible. My favorite were the ribeye taco and the Carnitas taco. They were super flavorful. We were looking for a taco place near the galleria on a weekday for lunch and surprisingly, there were only a few within a short distance. Upon arriving, we were immediately greeted and decided to sit in the patio area. Not too many patrons when we arrived but it was very spacious and can imagine during weekends the establishment would get busy. The place was clean and workers were friendly. I was actually surprised that they didnt have any free offerings of chips & salsa. I guess I've been spoiled going to Mexican restaurants over the decades. Regardless, the food was delicious! This restaurant is absolutely gorgeous and the margaritas were easily the highlight of our Valentine's Day. While the staff was attentive and service was fast, the small portions and pressured atmosphere made us feel rushed to finish our dinner. It's also a bit of a letdown that the chips aren't unlimited given how much salsa they provide for the salsa tray. We would have stayed for more drinks if we didn't feel like they were flipping the table, so we'll likely stick to the bar next time. It was our first time visiting and we were greeted by Joey the Manager who went above and beyond to make our visit memorable. He provided kids a gold box so the could choose a toy. Since there's not much vegan options on the menu, my daughter had ordered the beans and rice. He didn't want her to starve so he brought her some of their corn mix and sautéed vegetables on the house. It's nice that he was very caring. We will definitely come back when we're in the area. Unfortunately this was a really disappointing experience. We came for a birthday celebration and service was extremely slow and disorganized. It took over 30 minutes to get my drink, and I had to flag down another staff member for help. When it finally arrived, it was incorrect. The waitress insisted it was right and said she had "straw tested" it -- even after multiple people at the table tasted it and confirmed it was tequila. They eventually remade it, but at that point I had waited over 40 minutes. Food was also underwhelming at best. Portions were very small for the price, the beans were overly salty, and the quesabirria lacked any flavor. They also forgot one person's meal, and when it was brought out, staff tried to claim it had been ordered à la carte (it wasn't) and acted like rice and beans were a free extra. Chips and salsa was enough to feed maybe one person. Between the inaccurate drinks, poor food quality, and overall service, we won't be returning. The parking is also borderline impossible at least ln a Friday night. read more

The aguas fresca flight was my personal favorite--so refreshing and fun to sample different flavors. I also loved that they offer a non-alcoholic flight, which is such a thoughtful option and just as delicious. The margarita flight was equally amazing, a great way to explore their creative takes on a classic. I was craving Mexican food and saw this on yelp. I've noticed it several times when we have eaten at Eureka, but it just always seemed quiet. The food was super good, we had the queso which came out nice and hot, however we waited and waited for salsa to go with it and by the time we finally went in And asked a second time, they brought some out. It was super quitet but the service speed was, well, let's just say, it that's the norm, plan on being there a while and relaxing. We ordered the premium margarita which was super good. My husband had the birria tacos, and was very happy with them. I had the fresh corn salad with chicken. The salad was fantastic, the lettuce was fresh, with these little crunchy corn kernels, a perfectly balanced Mexican vibe vinaigrette, and topped with fresh corn sliced off the cob. They topped it cotija cheese, which gave it just the right amount of salt. I was a little bummed about how dry the chicken was. Definitely not cooked to order, clearly reheated, but the flavor was good. I had the corn taco also, which was so good I ordered another, but when the second one came, it was covered and I mean COVERED in mayo drizzle. They must've forgotten it on the first one, but it was so good without it, they should either skip it, or go may 25% of what they did on the second one. The creamy texture of the ahi tuna and avocado plus the crunch of the fried leeks and tortilla equals perfection! I couldn't resist the opportunity to try the churros. My friend and I wanted to try this relatively new upscale Mexican (less than a year old) restaurant nearby the Roseville Galleria mall. The blurb I had read promised innovative and authentic cuisine. We ordered a variety of items and while everything was OK, nothing stood out as spectacular or crave-worthy. There were also some issues with temperature. 411 on the food: Our order: Salsa (four offerings) and chips $5 Nachos ($10) Chicken Tacos ($16) -served with refried beans and rice) Steak with chimichuri sauce) $37; also with beans and rice Mocktail Churros with caramel and Mexican chocolate sauce ($11) I was a little baffled with the salsa platter. Not sure why the pickled red onions were there (after reading the reviews it's also a salsa, but one you need a fork for...) One of the salsas was roaring hot, none were particularly enjoyable. The chips were stone cold and thick cut yellow corn, but despite these flaws were not bad. The nachos used the same chips with refried beans, the green salsa, and an unusual pinkish orange cheese sauce garnished with crema and Cotija cheese. We agreed the cheese sauce was strange in appearance and taste. It was also congealed and cold. If we ate around the cheese, the other elements were fine. But isn't the cheese sauce the main point of nachos? Entrees arrived and this aspect was my favorite. I tried to pick up my taco and the tortilla fell apart, so it is a knife and fork taco. Odd but it tasted good. However, be aware you are getting four tiny street tacos. The chicken was marinated with a delicious flavor (I'm guessing tequila and lime) but the total protein was probably one chicken tenderloin. The toppings- romaine, cilantro, red onion, pico served on the side- tasty. I make my own pico de gallo (Roma tomatoes, red onion, cilantro, jalapeño, line juice, and salt) and I've had people rave about it, and I'm just going to say...mine is better and I don't run a restaurant. That being said, I was a member of the clean plate club. My friend enjoyed her steak and sauce, which looked delicious, so I was happy for her. We both agreed the sides - refried beans were tasty but also not warm when arrived- and the rice tasted like just rice. After one bite- not worth the carbs. We indulged in the churros for dessert and agreed the Mexican chocolate sauce for dipping was incredible. The churros were tasty, but I thought a bit too greasy. There was an ample ring of oil on the churro perimeter which indicates the oil temp for frying was too low. But, they were freshly made and we enjoyed the sweet end to our meal. The atmosphere: I had made a reservation and was able to choose patio seating or indoors. The indoor seating is rather dark and has loud music. There were lights added as it got dark lending a disco vibe. I went with the patio even though it was 92 degrees F in Roseville in the evening. 10 degrees higher than my 'hood in S. Sac...the asphalt and no trees thing definitely hits here. Since we were a party of two we were placed way at the edge, very far from the fans outdoors....and it didn't really cool us down. However, I definitely preferred the outdoors as my friend and I wanted to catch up and we can talk a LOT...and the music was lower volume outdoors. The space is dominated by a huge bar which I'm sure offers the 60 plus tequilas they specialize in. The front staff was very cordial. Our waitress was phenomenal and made our dining experience stellar. So the service aspect is definitely there. Our complaint (and my friend and I agreed) is that the food was not outstanding. There were issues with temperature and the taste profiles were not what we expected, particularly with the appetizers. The service was great, the restaurant was run well, the restrooms were spotless. The environment is not conducive for quiet conversation but seems perfect for a convivial group enjoying lots of drinks with a side of food. The voices definitely got loud as the night went on. I know my Mexican brother in law would be laughing at what we paid for dinner, but we had an overall good experience but it's not likely we would come back for dinner. Looks like a perfect place for Happy Hour and the patio is a great asset to this location. read more
